Abstract

In this study, the authors examine the relationship between and the efficiency of different approaches to standard (univariate) differential power analysis (DPA) attacks. The authors first show that, when fed with the same assumptions about the target device (i.e. with the same leakage model), the most popular approaches such as using a distance-of-means test, correlation analysis and Bayes attacks are essentially equivalent in this setting. Differences observed in practice are not because of differences in the statistical tests but because of statistical artefacts. Then, the authors establish a link between the correlation coefficient and the conditional entropy in side-channel attacks. In a first-order attack scenario, this relationship allows linking currently used metrics to evaluate standard DPA attacks (such as the number of power traces needed to perform a key recovery) with an information theoretic metric (the mutual information). The authors results show that in the practical scenario defined formally in this study, both measures are equally suitable to compare devices with respect to their susceptibility to DPA attacks. Together with observations regarding key and algorithm independence the authors consequently extend theoretical strategies for the sound evaluation of leaking devices towards the practice of side-channel attacks. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract

In a recent work, Mangard et al. showed that under certain assumptions, the (so-called) standard univariate side-channel attacks using a distance-of-means test, correlation analysis and Gaussian templates are essentially equivalent. In this paper, we show that in the context of multivariate attacks against masked implementations, this conclusion does not hold anymore. While a single distinguisher can be used to compare the susceptibility of different unprotected devices to first-order DPA, understanding second-order attacks requires to carefully investigate the information leakages and the adversaries exploiting these leakages, separately. Using a framework put forward by Standaert et al. at Eurocrypt 2009, we provide the first analysis that explores these two topics in the case of a masked implementation exhibiting a Hamming weight leakage model. Our results lead to refined intuitions regarding the efficiency of various practically-relevant distinguishers. Further, we also investigate the case of second- and third-order masking (i.e. using three and four shares to represent one value). This evaluation confirms that higher-order masking only leads to significant security improvements if the secret sharing is combined with a sufficient amount of noise. Eventually, we show that an information theoretic analysis allows determining this necessary noise level, for different masking schemes and target security levels, with high accuracy and smaller data complexity than previous methods.

Abstract

Dominant-negative mutations in STAT-3 have recently been found in the majority of patients with sporadic or autosomal-dominant hyper IgE syndrome (HIES). Since STAT-3 plays a role in B cell development and differentiation, we analyzed memory B cells in 20 patients with HIES, 17 of which had STAT-3 mutations. All but four patients had reduced non-switched and/or class-switched memory B cells. No reduction in these B cell populations was found in 16 atopic dermatitis patients with IgE levels above 1000 KU/L. There was no correlation between the reduction of memory B cells and the ability to produce specific antibodies. Moreover, there was no correlation between the percentage of memory B cells and the infection history. Analysis of memory B cells can be useful in distinguishing patients with suspected HIES from patients with atopic disease, but probably fails to identify patients who are at high risk of infection.

Abstract

Cytotoxic necrotizing factors (CNF) constitute a group a cell-associated proteic toxins of 110-115 kDa produced by some clinical isolates of Escherichia coli from man and animals. Purified CNFs are known to exacerbate actin polymerization in exposed cells, a property that has been ascribed to their ability to modify rho a small GTP-protein involved in the regulation of the cytoskeleton. We speculated that, in spite of their lack of excretion in broth culture supernatants, CNF might be expressed upon direct interaction of organisms with infected cells. To test this hypothesis, we set up a model of interaction using epithelial cell line HeLa and the CNF1-producing strain BM2-1, which is adherent to Hela cells. An interaction of four hour duration triggers the progressive development of a dose-dependent cytopathic effect (CPE) with following characteristics: (1) intense cell enlargement with formation of a dense network of stress fibers, (2) inhibition of cell mitosis due to an irreversible block in G2/M transition phase, (3) nucleus swelling and fragmentation, and (4) cell death starting five days after infection. The three last features clearly differentiate CPE from the effect produced by CNF1 alone. In addition CPE, was not produced by cell-free culture supernatants nor abolished by an antiserum neutralizing CNF1. Tn5::PhoA insertion in the 3' end of cnf1 structural gene abolished CPE, which was not restored by trans complementation with cloned cnf1. These results demonstrate that CNF1-producing E. coli exert a specific pathogenic effect in HeLa cells, which is determined by cnf1 and at least one additional gene, located downstream cnf1.
