Abstract

Calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp; Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is a well-known biomaterial that is the main inorganic component of bones and teeth. Control over the surface charge on HAp would be a key advance in the development of the material for tissue engineering. We demonstrate here that surface charge can be induced by an electrical poling process using the Kelvin method. Positive and negative charges were induced on the HAp surface in response to the applied electric field in the poling process. The surface charging is attributed to dipole polarization that is homogeneously distributed in HAp. Additionally, the surface charging is considered to originate from the organization of OH- ions into a polar phase in the structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nevertheless, there are few biomarkers for distinguishing unipolar and bipolar disorder. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive and useful method for the measurement of hemoglobin concentration changes in the cortical surface area, which enables the assessment of brain function. We measured NIRS and plasma monoamine metabolite levels in a patient with bipolar disorder. A 22-year-old man was admitted due to major depression. At admission, NIRS findings showed oxygenated hemoglobin reincrease in the posttask period, which is characteristic of schizophrenia. After treatment with paroxetine, he became manic with psychotic symptoms. His plasma level of homovanillic acid just before the manic switch was ten times higher than that just after paroxetine initiation. Treatment with lithium and antipsychotics was successful, and plasma homovanillic acid decreased after treatment. In this case, the NIRS findings may predict a possible risk of a manic switch, which is likely induced by paroxetine. Abstract

Background and purpose: The association between an increased supraventricular ectopic beat (SVEB) and subclinical cerebrovascular disease remains unclear. Given the emerging concept that an increased SVEB is a marker of atrial cardiomyopathy or atherosclerosis burden, we sought to determine whether excessive supraventricular ectopic activity (ESVEA) is associated with a higher burden of subclinical cerebrovascular disease in the middle‐aged to older cohort with neither apparent stroke nor atrial fibrillation. Methods: We conducted a cross‐sectional population‐based study of 462 men (mean age, 68.1 years) who underwent 24‐h Holter electrocardiography and brain magnetic resonance imaging. ESVEA was defined as the presence of >10 SVEBs/h. Subclinical cerebrovascular diseases were defined as silent brain infarct (SBI), white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS). The association of ESVEA with the presence of subclinical cerebrovascular diseases was adjusted for potential confounding covariates. Results: A total of 88 (19.0%) participants had ESVEA and 81 (17.5%), 91 (19.7%) and 109 (23.6%) had SBI, WMH and ICAS, respectively. In multivariable‐adjusted Poisson regression with robust error variance, ESVEA was associated with the presence of WMH (relative risk, 1.58; 95% confidence interval, 1.06–2.36) and ICAS (relative risk, 1.49; 95% confidence interval, 1.02–2.18), but not with that of SBI (relative risk, 1.32; 95% confidence interval, 0.86–2.01). These associations were consistent when the graded distributions of subclinical cerebrovascular diseases were applied as outcomes in ordinal logistic regression. Conclusions: The ESVEA was independently associated with higher burdens of WMH and ICAS. This suggests that increased SVEBs might improve risk stratification of individuals at high risk of subclinical cerebrovascular disease and consequently apparent ischaemic stroke. Abstract

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is a chemoautotrophic bacterium that is capable of using Fe2+ oxidation by O2 as the sole source of energy for growth and CO2 fixation. The idea of the solar bacterial biomass farm by using of this bacterium is proposed. The incubation experiment of these bacteria was carried out, and the 9K culture medium as the standard medium for T. ferrooxidans was used. The measurement of Fe2+ in the growth stage was carried out as the first step of the experiments to clarify the possibility of this system. The items of measurement were Fe2+ ion density, pH of the medium, bacterium density and quantity of total organic carbon (TOC). Abstract

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is characterized by progressive stenosis and occlusion of the terminal portion of the bilateral carotid arteries as well as arterial collateral vessels. The etiology of MMD, however, remains unknown. Several pieces of evidence suggest the involvement of genetic factors in MMD: over 10% of MMD patients have affected blood relatives; concordance in the affection status has been proven in 80% of identical twins; and there is an ethnic predisposition to MMD, the incidence of the disease being the highest in the Asian population. With regard to genetic factor (s), transmission of MMD does not follow the classic Mendelian law, i.e., skipping of a generation and discordance in identical twins, thereby indicating that genetic influence is likely to determine the susceptibility to MMD. This study aimed to overview the recent findings related to the genetic determinants in MMD and to provide research perspectives for the next decade. Pathophysiological investigations at molecular levels have uncovered the upregulation of various growth and stress response factors that are associated with angiogenesis in occlusive cerebral arteries.
