Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima stressed that his works are meant for Japanese readers and expressed surprise that his novels are also popular among Westerners. Mishima, who was born in Tokyo, Japan, on Jan. 14, 1925, considers himself poor at languages despite his knowledge of German and English. Mishima committed suicide on Nov. 25, 1970, without realizing his dream of winning a Nobel Prize.
