Abstract

The fracture surfaces of specimens of a heat-treated hard steel, namely Cr–Mo steel SCM435, which failed in the regime of N = 105 to 5 × 108 cycles, were investigated by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimens having a longer fatigue life had a particular morphology beside the inclusion at the fracture origin. The particular morphology looked optically dark when observed by an optical microscope and it was named the optically dark area (ODA). The ODA looks a rough area when observed by SEM and atomic force microscope (AFM). The relative size of the ODA to the size of the inclusion at the fracture origin increases with increase in fatigue life. Thus, the ODA is considered to have a crucial role in the mechanism of superlong fatigue failure. It has been assumed that the ODA is made by the cyclic fatigue stress and the synergetic effect of the hydrogen which is trapped by the inclusion at the fracture origin. To verify this hypothesis, in addition to conventionally heat-treated specimens (specimen QT, i.e. quenched and tempered), specimens annealed at 300 °C in a vacuum (specimen VA) and the specimens quenched in a vacuum (specimen VQ) were prepared to remove the hydrogen trapped by inclusions. The specimens VA and VQ, had a much smaller ODA than the specimen QT. Some other evidence of the influence of hydrogen on superlong fatigue failure are also presented. Thus, it is concluded that the hydrogen trapped by inclusions is a crucial factor which causes the superlong fatigue failure of high strength steels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High cycle fatigue fracture surfaces of specimens in which failure was initiated at a subsurface inclusion were investigated by atomic force microscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. The surface roughness Ra increased with radial distance from the fracture origin (inclusion) under constant amplitude tension–compression fatigue, and the approximate relationship: Ra ≅ CΔK 2I holds. At the border of a fish-eye there is a stretched zone. Dimple patterns and intergranular fracture morphologies are present outside the border of the fish-eye. The height of the stretch zone is approximately a constant value around the periphery of the fish-eye. If we assume that a fatigue crack grows cycle-by-cycle from the edge of the optically dark area (ODA) outside the inclusion at the fracture origin to the border of the fish-eye, we can correlate the crack growth rate da/dN, stress intensity factor range ΔKI and Ra for SCM435 steel by the equation &formm81; and by da/dN proportional to the parameter Ra . Integrating the crack growth rate equation, the crack propagation period Np2 consumed from the edge of the ODA to the border of the fish-eye can be estimated for the specimens which failed at Nf > 107. Values of Np2 were estimated to be ∼1.0 × 106 for the specimens which failed at Nf ≅ 5 × 108. It follows that the fatigue life in the regime of Nf >107 is mostly spent in crack initiation and discrete crack growth inside the ODA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Solvation dynamics of 1,2-(p-cyano-p‘-methoxydiphenyl)-ethyne (CMPE) in various solvents were investigated by observing its time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption in the picosecond regime. Anisotropy decays of CMPE in most of the solvents examined were apparently single-exponential, except for n-butanol, in which the decay was nonexponential. Dipole moment of CMPE in the excited state (μe), limiting anisotropy (A0) and rotational diffusion coefficient (D0) were obtained from the anisotropy decays with the theoretical expression based on continuum model combined with a nonlinear least-squares's method. The values of μe were linearly dependent on the solvent polarity except for benzene (9.9 D), and were 3.4 D in diethyl ether, 5.7 D in tetrahydrofuran, 13 D in n-butanol, 17 D in acetonitrile and 42 D in dimethyl sulfoxide. From transient absorption spectral measurements, it was demonstrated that the CT states appeared with time less than 10 ps in acetonitrile, 10 ps in methanol and 20 ps in dioxane after pulsed excitation, but not in n-hexane. These results reveal that the dipole moment of CMPE in the excited state is dependent on the solvent polarity. The values of D0 in benzene and in polar solvents with short relaxation times were always less than those calculated with stick or slip model, which suggests that rotational volume of the excited CMPE increased by the solvation. Time-resolved Stokes shift and anisotropy of the fluorescence of CMPE in n-butanol were simultaneously analyzed to obtain μe = 14 D, μg (the dipole moment in the ground state) = 1.5 D and D0 = 0.94 ns-1.

Abstract

The evolution of silicon carbide (0001) surface reconstruction upon annealing has been studied by Si K edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Using Si KVV Auger electron yield at different emission angles with different surface sensitivities, EXAFS reveals conclusively that Si–Si bonds exist on the surface for all reconstructions. The existence of Si clusters on the 63×63R30° surface was also confirmed by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. This finding gives us a better understanding of epitaxial graphene formation on SiC. Abstract

By using picosecond transient absorption and fluorescence lifetime measurement techniques, we have investigated intramolecular charge separation and charge recombination processes of aminophenyl(phenyl)acetylene and N,N-dimethylaminophenyl(phenyl)acetylene in various polar solvents. Significant quenching of the intramolecular charge separated state was observed in protic solvents and both the triplet and fluorescence yields were much lower than those in aprotic polar solvents. Such enhancement of the charge recombination was explained by the increase of the radiationless transition probability to the ground electronic state caused by the structural deformation around the amino nitrogen atom. Interaction between the amino nitrogen atom and the oxygen atom of the solvent molecule, which is the hydrogen-bond donor terminal of the network, should play an important role.

Optical injection locking was experimentally performed using a 38-GHz-band InP-based HEMT MMIC oscillator and a 1.55-/spl mu/m lightwave. Two optical modulation schemes were compared for optical injection locking, and no difference was found except for the optical modulation frequency.
