Abstract

With the emergence of available wireless technologies in combination with small-sized hardware, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become one of the defining technology trends of the last decade. It has additionally gained the attention of military technology innovators as a means to gain information dominance in the battlespace through enhanced situational awareness. Conducted as partof the NATO research task group IST-176 on “Federated Interoperability of Military C2 and IoT Systems”, this research investigates asecure approach to connect heterogeneous assets that rely on widely used and standardized technologies. To demonstrate theapproach, a set of planned experiments are presented in which systems from different nations are connected in a federatedenvironment. The results of the experiments aim to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating battlefield assets, including soldiersystems and IoT devices, in supporting collective C2.

Abstract

Tactical edge networks are characterized by wireless links that have limited capacity and are prone to disconnection. In such a challenging and hostile environment, replication of information could be desirable as it increases information availability through redundancy and accessibility through proximity. However, replication of information has a negative effect on security because it broadens the attack surface -- more nodes may be targeted to obtain sensitive information, thereby potentially increasing the overall risk of the information being compromised or leaked. Furthermore, replicating information takes away resources (particularly communications and power, but also to some extent computation and storage) from other tasks that might also need the same resources. These trade-offs between information availability, information protection, and resource utilization exist and need to be explored in the context of different solutions that could be applied to the challenging problem of information dispersal for assured operations in tactical environments.

Abstract

The LoRaWAN communication protocol has gained significant adoption within commercial IoT systems through support for low power, long range transmission. LoRaWAN’s growing usage in cities and civilian infrastructure has prompted investigation into its potential usage within military systems for supporting urban operations, involving expanded research on LoRa signal coverage in the presence of urban infrastructure. Through the use of a supporting Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) IoT architecture, a set of experiments were conducted in New York City aimed at testing LoRa signal coverage in both indoor and outdoor settings. Performance was compared for different transmission configurations on the North American Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) 915 MHz band. This work is seen as a key step to better understand the suitability and applicability of civilian IoT communication protocols to augment and enhance tactical C2 systems for urban operations.
