Lest we forget, artifacts exist all around to help us remember who we were and how we have changed. They are the markers of history. Artifacts can take almost any form and tell us their stories in varying degrees. Some are clear, like the daily accounts written in a diary where names, dates and observations can all be verified. Others require more interpretation. All have something to say. In this paper, two artifacts from one of Canada's WWII concentration camps for Nikkei (Japanese-Canadians) are presented in the hope that byunderstanding more of their story a small part of Canadian wartime history can be brought further into the light. The artifacts in question are a handmade replica Japanese language elementary school reading textbookand part of a diary, both the work of Masayuki Yano (1909 – 1989), a Canadian issei (first generation Japanese immigrant), The artifacts are part of the Yano-Shuttleworth collection., 13, KJ00009010319, 研究論文, research paper

Peruvian visual artist Eduardo Tokeshi's work develops around two major subjects: identity and faith, that he expresses through the decontextualization of objects, which he rescues from their primitive applications and (re)defines by setting them up with other objects that symbolize ideas and beliefs. This interpretative value creates a symbolic and powerful language, playful and ironic, with which he communicates his socio identity structures that come from the influence of neo-pop and thus become conceptual art, with a mixture of figurative art and "chicha", as discussed in: "Life is a box" and "Life and miracles invisible man" series.

This paper is an analytical study of the Japanese community in Peru in terms of adaptation of the Japanese immigrants who arrived in search of new job opportunities and who ended up settling in Peruvian land. We aim to see how the coexistence and the relationship between Japanese and Peruvians have changed over the time and has affected the creation of identity and national sentiment, leading in many cases to intolerance and discrimination. Thus, the outbreak of the Second War World is taken as a starting point, when the greatest number of anti-Japanese movements took place in Peru, until 2000 when it concluded the mandate of President Alberto Fujimori which has Japanese origins

The Japanese public authorities have only recently acknowledged the real need for providing schooling and tutoring for immigrant children. Although several measures initiated by the central authority have been implemented, most of the current assistance and support policies still depend on county, municipal or private initiatives. The article discusses the difficulties encountered today by newly immigrated children from Brazil, but who are of Japanese ancestry. It shows that the numerous problems of academic failure, abandonment of studies, dropping out of school and finally social exclusion which affect a significant percentage of young foreigners are still closely related to the failings and oversights of the central administration.

It is very common for Nikkei (Japanese emigrants and their descendants) who live inJapan to say that they came to Japan in search of their roots. A number of them then stayon in Japan. This study is based on videotaped discussions of small groups of Nikkei whoare long-term residents. The paper first discusses the topic of identity and self-concept, andthen gives a rationale for the use of narrative analysis. After transcribing excerpts of theself-introductions of six Nikkei, ten of their narratives were analyzed using Labov’sstructural framework.,

This paper presents results of a research with young Japanese descendants involved or not with oriental activities, inhabitants of the Curitiba city (Brazil). Nine semi-structured interviews were carried out and analyzed toward reaching identity and the role of body in the process of identity in young people. The results suggest: a) the proper look expresses a supposed behavior or a group of values thought typically related to the Asian culture; b) the Nikkei body appears as a deviant one, since its pattern does not coincide with the ideal beauty in Brazilian society. It promotes prejudice and exclusion, driving them to look for protection and welcoming niches in clubs and associations as a way of gathering, but also a strategy that allows them to set themselves free from the flaws and excesses of the body.

In this thesis, we propose a systematic approach called the doubly adaptive LASSO tailored to time series analysis, which includes four specific methods for four time series models, respectively: The PAC-weighted adaptive LASSO for univariate autoregressive (AR) models. Although the LASSO methodology has been applied to AR models, the existing methods in the literature ignore the temporal dependence information embedded in AR time series data. Consequently, the methods may not reflect the characteristics of underlying AR processes, especially, the lag order of AR models. The PAC-weighted adaptive LASSO incorporates the partial autocorrelation (PAC) into the adaptive LASSO weights. The PAC-weighted adaptive LASSO estimator has asymptotic oracle properties and a Monte Carlo study shows promising results. The PAC-weighted adaptive positive LASSO for autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (ARCH) models. We have not found any results in the literature that apply the LASSO methodology to ARCH models. The PAC-weighted adaptive positive LASSO incorporates the PAC information embedded in squared ARCH process into adaptive LASSO weights. The word positive reflects the fact that the parameters in ARCH models are non-negative. We introduce a new concept named the surrogate of the second-order approximate likelihood, and propose a modified shooting algorithm to implement the PAC-weighted adaptive positive LASSO computationally. The PAC-weighted adaptive positive LASSO estimator has asymptotic oracle properties and a Monte Carlo study shows promising results. The PLAC-weighted adaptive LASSO for vector autoregressive (VAR) models. Although the LASSO methodology has been applied to building VAR time series models, the existing methods in the literature ignore the temporal dependence information embedded in VAR time series data. Consequently, the methods may not reflect the characteristics of VAR time series data, especially, the lag order of VAR models. The PLAC-weighted adaptive LASSO incorporates the partial lag autocorrelation (PLAC) into the adaptive LASSO weights. The PLAC-weighted adaptive LASSO estimator has oracle properties and Monte Carlo studies show promising results. The PLAC-weighted adaptive LASSO for BEKK vector ARCH (VARCH) models. We have not found any results in the literature that apply the LASSO methodology to VARCH processes. We focus on the BEKK VARCH models. The PLAC-weighted adaptive LASSO incorporates the PLAC information embedded in the squared BEKK VARCH process into the adaptive LASSO weights. We extend the concept of the surrogate of the second-order approximate likelihood, and propose a modified shooting algorithm to implement the PLAC-weighted adaptive LASSO computationally. We conduct a Monte Carlo study and have preliminary results from the study. This research explores the formation and portrayal of ethnic identity among Japanese people living in Chile, both first and subsequent generations. Through personal interviews and the analysis of academic work on the topic and magazine articles on Japan during the 2000s, this thesis attempts to elucidate what role underlying concepts such as ‘culture' and ‘nation' play in the construction of a Japanese-Chilean identity and portrayal. By looking at the elements that in recent decades have disrupted these stereotypes, including access to different aspects of Japan through the mass media, it analyses what this perceived threat to Japanese-Chileans' arbitrage of cultural standards reveals about their long-held preconceptions of what constitutes Japaneseness and its relationships to Chilean social expectations.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Abstract: My research aims to add diversity to our understanding of the forcible relocation of Nikkei, or people of Japanese descent, in Canada during World War II. Previous historical examinations presented a seemingly monolithic experience of Canadian Nikkei during the community's forcible relocation. This study, however, uses health care as a tool with which to complicate this history and highlight the theme of diversity among this group. It serves as an example of how the inclusion of health care in a historical analysis can reveal many struggles and adaptations made by a group. Moreover, this study shows the importance of source diversity in an effort to complicate and establish a better understanding of the Nikkei forcible relocation of World War II in Canada, which should no longer be understood as a monolithic experience. In order to answer the question of how health care was provided to the Nikkei during the war, I draw on a range of primary sources from the Canadian government and the Nikkei. I use expense reports, periodic reports, and visitor reports to show how the official government discourse asserted that sufficient health care was being provided to the Nikkei. I then use the memoir of a Japanese Canadian physician, Dr. Masajiro Miyazaki, as an example of how this rhetoric about sufficient health care is discredited by Nikkei records which document a more complex assessment of health care services. When these different perspectives on health care are considered together, we gain a better understanding of the diverse provisions provided to, and by, the Nikkei during the war. These sources illustrate that health care was as diverse as the Nikkei communities within which it was being provided. Therefore, I argue that the Nikkei relocated to a wide variety of locales and that these multiple types of relocation sites shaped the health care that people received. I outline the four types of relocation communities, which were: government-relocated self-supported communities within British Columbia; government-relocated, government-supported communities which were commonly called 'interior settlement centres' in British Columbia; the Alberta and Manitoba Farm Plan centres; and the Prisoner of War Camps throughout the nation. I conclude that because of diverse relocation sites, this familiar event in Canadian history did not produce a monolithic experience for the Nikkei. Furthermore, this study illustrates both the limitations in the health care provided to the Japanese Canadian community during relocation and the struggle for Japanese Canadian medical professionals to continue their practice during the war.

Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos The Dekasegi Phenomenon reveals a migratory flow that has caused suffering in the Japanese Brazilian community by fragmenting several families, with second and third generation descendants migrating to Japan, leaving behind parents, children and/or wives in Brazil. In this context we face several changes of previous roles and functions of each family member at home, forcing these people to overcome the distance and change their routines at home, rising questions to ponder in Social Anthropology, especially in its Kinship Theories. Characterized in contemporary Anthropological Theory as transnational families precisely for being constituted of members living apart in more than one country, dekasegi families live with a paradox and are still little studied in Anthropology: a series of economic, cultural, political, and other reasons makes it necessary for family members to be separated and sent to another country in order to keep the family united. This research proposes a study of dekasegi families living in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka, known for being home to one of the largest contingents of Brazilians living in Japan. The main objective of this thesis is to shed light on how these Japanese Brazilians build their relationships not only with one another but also with family members left behind in Brazil aiming a better understanding of the internal dynamics of this migratory flow that has lasted for more than 20 years.

The objectives of this study are to analyze the influence of IHSG, Dowjones, and Nikkei to JII. The data used in this study are monthly time series data from January 2006 – May 2012. Those data are JII, IHSG, Dowjones Index and Nikkei Index. Research method used in this study is Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). The cointegration test indicates that among research variables there is long term equilibrium and simultaneous relationship. The Empirical result of Impulse Response Function shown that the effect of IHSG, DowJones and Nikkei to JII are negative. The result on variance decomposition test had shown that the most effect of JII shock is influenced by JII itself. It can be conclude that Islamic Capital Market is more stable from the external shock rather than the conventional one.DOI: 10.15408/etk.v11i2.1888

This thesis traces the experience of Japanese immigrants and their descendents (or Nikkei) in Canada and Australia from their arrival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, until after the deportation of substantial numbers of each community in 1946 and 1947. Using Bosniak, I argue that the pre-war position of the Nikkei within each nation exemplified the tension between concepts of universal rights, and the need for boundaries in liberal citizenship. At the end of the war, both Canada and Australia attempted to deal with the incoherence presented by these groups by deporting those that they could, and extending historic rights to those who remained. The temporal proximity of these actions to the formal creation of Canadian Citizenship in 1947 and Australian Citizenship in 1949 suggests the historic importance of these events. At a time when national boundaries were being redefined, the deportations illustrated just where the limits of Canada and Australia lay. Chapters 1 and 5 of this dissertation provide historical context for the thesis. Chapter 1 presents an analysis of the pre-war development of racial-nationalism in Canada and Australia in order to contextualise the position that “Japanese” subjects occupied within each nation. Chapter 5 examines post-war citizenship reform with respect to how the “foreignness” of Nikkei was accommodated and pre-war notions of citizenship were disturbed in the post-war period. Chapters 2 to 4 tell the story of deportation in Canada and Australia through three vital lenses – legislative action, judicial review and popular discourse – in order to examine how different aspects of national life interacted with Nikkei at a time of national crisis and reinterpretation. In short, this thesis sees the wartime treatment of Nikkei, particularly the deportations, as a historically important vantage point from which to view the racial nationalism of the first decades of the 20th century and the increasingly civic understandings of each political community in the post-war era.

This paper, authored by an Italian and a Japanese, sums up the introductory remarks and the claims that form the background of some research in the repeated migrations of Japanese people and their descendants between Japan and Latin America. The paper points out the existence of a three-fold exchange of resources and experiences, which involves also Europe and in particular Italy.

Nikkei ,Transnationalism ,Anthropology, Cultural ,Return Migration - Abstract
This dissertation examines the effects of return migration on Nikkei (of Japanese descent) sending communities in the Soconusco Region (Acacoyagua), Chiapas, Mexico and Lima, Peru. Massive numbers of Nikkei Latin Americans have been returning to Japan in the last two decades filling a shortage in low-skill labor. The Nikkei mass exodus is indicative of the global economic pattern that has caught Latin American countries in a downward economic spiral resulting in joblessness and class polarization. For many, transnational migration is the only viable option for economic survival. This research illustrates how Nikkei are strategically making home, shaping family and defining selves through return migration. Nikkei Latin Americans (those who go and those who stay) approach return as Ganbatteando (doing one's best) embracing and making-their-own the Japanese concept of Ganbarimas. This study examines the local impacts of a global phenomenon broadening the traditional anthropological approach on spatially localized groups to address identity-formation as a discursive phenomenon situated in-between, across and outside, yet still connected to fixed or bounded locations or nations. I explore how Japanese in Latin America reconcile their Japanese roots with their embedded experience in their Latin American birthplace as well as their newest and current experiences in Japan to construct variable, changing and unique identities. Nikkei, situated in and creating a temporal and spatial borderzone are forming, reforming, and transforming home, family and identity as their local communities and marriage options, are depleted. By incorporating non-Nikkei-but-Nikkei-enthusiasts, Nikkei are sustaining and reinforcing endogamous marriage at a time when the emigration of large numbers of marriageable-aged Nikkei make that otherwise impossible. In this process, they are making intimate choices: reasserting ethnic strongholds in the homes of their choice, shifting and strategically broadening kinship and community boundaries, and at the same time more strictly regulating inclusion and exclusion. Nikkei are eating potato chips with chopsticks at the same time that non-Nikkei in Latin America are frying sushi.

The notion that 1,2 million Brazilians are"Japanese" has important implications for our understanding of nation, ethnicity and Diaspora. The majority of Nikkei see Brazil as their nation, but many non-Nikkei Brazilian presume that Japan is the Nikkei homeland. This article suggests that Nikkei militants during the period of the dictatorship (1964-1984) resented the diasporic representations constructed by majority society and rejected the idea that they were simply"Japanese." These same people, however, see themselves as different from normative Brazilians, and their stereotypes of "Brazil" and"Brazilians" as others was as prevalent as the stereotypes of non-Nikkei about"Japan" and"Japanese".

- Abstract
The article deals with an active mission among Japanese immigrants in Brazil, including the support of the Japanese government and the Japanese Catholic Church. The article rejects the hypothesis of an easy accommodation of Catholicism in Japan and suggests that for a proper analysis of the process one has to take into account the specific character of the missionaries activities as well the latent dispute between the nationalist Shintoism and the Brazilian Catholicism., O artigo descreve uma ativa missão católica entre os imigrantes japoneses no Brasil, inclusive com o suporte governamental e com atividades da Igreja Católica Japonesa.

This article explores images relating to the Japanese population in São Paulo, based on the study of stereotyped representations and race determinants existing in collective discourse. By considering a few common expressions from popular language and by examining recorded discourse, it aims to analyse what is presented as obvious: the body designated as “Japanese” in Brazil, one that is foreign, different and excluded from the body representations at work in the “national myth”.It will therefore be a matter of identifying the phenotypical markers at play, and showing what directly follows from them, namely a series of representations “naturally” associated with the Nikkei ethnicity, having to do with norms of aesthetics and social behaviour, with moral and intellectual values, and with collective and individual practices expected from Japanese Brazilians.
