Abstract

The timing calibration is a delicate operation to perform for assuring the full functionality of a large underwater neutrino telescope. In this paper we have illustrated the main features, some technical details and preliminary results of our system for a timing calibration system tailored to the needs of the NEMO apparatus. We point out however that the approach proposed can be easily adapted to work for any underwater neutrino telescope. © 2007 IEEE.

Abstract

Fifty-two infants with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) enrolled in the AIEOP ALL-91 and ALL-95 studies were treated with the intermediate or high risk protocols according to their presenting features and early response to treatment. The 5-year event-free survival was 33.3% (95% CI 12.1-54.5), 53.5% (95% CI 35.7-71.3) and 45.0% (95% CI 31.3-58.7) in the ALL-91 and ALL-95 studies and in the overall cohort, respectively. In the ALL-95 high-risk group (BFM therapy intensified by three blocks and double protocol II) nine of 17 patients treated with chemotherapy only and three of four transplanted patients were alive and in complete remission. The corresponding figures for patients treated in the ALL-91 high-risk protocol (reduced induction and nine blocks) were one of seven patients treated with chemotherapy only and none of two who were transplanted.

Abstract

We screened 100 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) to assess the incidence of single amino acid change A91V in perform. Heterozygous A91V was found in 12/100 patients and 5/127 controls (OR, 3.4; 95%CI: 1.15-9.95; p=0.014). A91V is a novel and frequent predisposing factor for childhood ALL.

Abstract

The outcome of high-risk (HR) acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients enrolled in the AIEOP-BFM ALL 2000 study in Italy is described. HR criteria were minimal residual disease (MRD) levels ≥10(-3) at day 78 (MRD-HR), no complete remission (CR) at day 33, t(4;11) translocation, and prednisone poor response (PPR). Treatment (2 years) included protocol I, 3 polychemotherapy blocks, delayed intensification (protocol IIx2 or IIIx3), cranial radiotherapy, and maintenance. A total of 312 HR patients had a 5-year event-free survival (EFS) of 58.9% (standard error [SE] = 2.8) and an overall survival of 68.9% (SE = 2.6). In hierarchical order, EFS was 45.9% (4.4) in 132 MRD-HR patients, 41.2% (11.9) in 17 patients with no CR at day 33, 36.4% (14.5) in 11 patients with t(4;11), and 74.0% (3.6) in 152 HR patients only for PPR. No statistically significant difference was found for disease-free survival in patients with very HR features [MRD-HR, no CR at day 33, t(4;11) translocation], given hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) (n = 66) or chemotherapy only (n = 88), after adjusting for waiting time to HSCT (5.7 months). Patients at HR only for PPR have a favorable outcome. MRD-HR is associated with poor outcome despite intensive treatment and/or HSCT and may qualify for innovative therapies. Abstract

IL-8 serum levels were measured in a group of 44 patients affected with Chronic Active Hepatitis (CAH) HCV+ at the beginning and end of peg-interferon plus ribavirin combined therapy. IL-8 levels were compared with those measured in a group of healthy controls. The patients were treated for 12 months, and then followed up for 6 months after the end of the therapy. IL-8 serum levels were detected by ELISA at the beginning and end of the therapy, and then at the end of the follow-up. IL-8 serum levels were significantly more elevated (p0.01) in CAH HCV+ patients than in the healthy controls. Furthermore, IL-8 serum levels in those patients who subsequently showed a sustained virological response to the therapy, declined on treatment and maintained lower levels than in those who did not respond to therapy. Serum IL-8 can be considered and proposed as a non-invasive and predictive marker of response to combined PEG IFN alpha2b + Ribavirin in CAH HCV +.
