BackgroundThe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known.ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison.ResultsProcedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April2020.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

- Abstract
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac diagnostic testing and practice and to assess its impact in different regions in Europe. METHODS: The online survey organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency Division of Human Health collected information on changes in cardiac imaging procedural volumes between March 2019 and March/April 2020. Data were collected from 909 centres in 108 countries. RESULTS: Centres in Northern and Southern Europe were more likely to cancel all outpatient activities compared with Western and Eastern Europe. There was a greater reduction in total procedure volumes in Europe compared with the rest of the world in March 2020 (45% vs 41%, p=0.003), with a more marked reduction in Southern Europe (58%), but by April 2020 this was similar in Europe and the rest of the world (69% vs 63%, p=0.261). Regional variations were apparent between imaging modalities, but the largest reductions were in Southern Europe for nearly all modalities. In March 2020, location in Southern Europe was the only independent predictor of the reduction in procedure volume. However, in April 2020, lower gross domestic product and higher COVID-19 deaths were the only independent predictors. CONCLUSION: The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on care of patients with cardiac disease, with substantial regional variations in Europe. This has potential long-term implications for patients and plans are required to enable the diagnosis of non-COVID-19 conditions during the ongoing pandemic.

- Abstract
Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

Background: The occurrence of hypertension has been increasing alarmingly in both low and middle-income countries. Despite acknowledging hypertension as the most common life-threatening risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), a dearth of data is available on the prevalence, awareness, and determinants of hypertension in rural parts of South Africa. The principal aim of the current study is to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of hypertension among a black rural African population from the Mtatha town of Eastern Cape Province. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, and individuals over 18 years of age were randomly screened using a World Health Organization stepwise questionnaire. Sociodemographic information, anthropometric measurements, fasting blood glucose levels, and three independent blood pressure (BP) readings were measured. Blood pressure measurements were classified according to the American Heart Association guidelines. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the significant predictors of hypertension. Results: Of the total participants (n = 556), 71% of individuals had BP scores in the hypertensive range. In univariate analysis, age, westernized diet, education, income, and diabetic status, as well as overweight/obese status were positively associated with the prevalence of hypertension. However, in a multivariate logistic regression analysis only, age, body mass index (BMI), diabetic status, and westernized diet were significantly associated with a higher risk of developing hypertension. Gender, age, and BMI were potential factors having a significant association with the treatment of hypertension. Individuals who did not consider the importance of medicine had higher chances of having their hypertension being untreated. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes significant mortality and morbidity, with an unknown impact in the medium to long term. Evidence from previous coronavirus epidemics indicates that there is likely to be a substantial burden of disease, potentially even in those with a mild acute illness. The clinical and occupational effects of COVID-19 are likely to impact on the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. Collaboration between Defence Primary Healthcare, Defence Secondary Healthcare, Defence Rehabilitation and Defence Occupational Medicine resulted in the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre COVID-19 Recovery Service (DCRS). This integrated clinical and occupational pathway uses cardiopulmonary assessment as a cornerstone to identify, diagnose and manage post-COVID-19 pathology.

111. Continuum modeling and analysis of the frictional interaction between a CNT and a substrate during dragging

A simple method to determine the frictional interaction between a carbon nanotube (CNT) and a substrate is analyzed for feasibility. In this technique an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip is used to drag a CNT along a substrate. Then the deformed shape of the CNT can be viewed either with the AFM or in a scanning electron microscope. An analysis of the steady-state deformed shape allows the determination of the frictional interactions, which occurred during dragging. It is important to quantify these interactions in a variety of potential applications of nanotechnology. In one such example, a CNT based nanoswitch consists of a CNT bridging over a trench. Actuation of the CNT causes it to stretch and can lead to partial slip at the interface. This slip causes hysteresis, which has been observed in the mechanical actuation of a CNT bridge. In this paper continuum level modeling of the frictional interaction is used to determine the relationship between the steady-state deformed shape of the CNT and the frictional interaction, which occurred between the CNT and substrate during dragging. The model and analysis indicate that this method should be feasible for CNTs with aspect ratios approximately in the 100-250 range. [DOI: 10.1115/1.3142905]

In beam theory, constraints can be classified as fixed/pinned depending on whether the rotational stiffness of the support is much greater/less than the rotational stiffness of the freestanding portion. For intermediate values of the rotational stiffness of the support, the boundary conditions must account for the finite rotational stiffness of the constraint. In many applications, particularly in microelectromechanical systems and nanomechanics, the constraints exist only on one side of the beam. In such cases, it may appear at first that the same conditions on the constraint stiffness hold. However, it is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that even if the beam is perfectly bonded on one side only to a completely rigid constraining surface, the proper model for the boundary conditions for the beam still needs to account for beam deformation in the bonded region. The use of a modified beam theory, which accounts for bending, shear, and extensional deformation in the bonded region, is required in order to model this behavior. Examples are given for cantilever, bridge, and guided structures subjected to either transverse loads or residual stresses. The results show significant differences from the ideal bond case. Comparisons made to a three-dimensional finite element analysis show a good agreement.

For surgical aortic valve replacement, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons score (STSS) is the reference standard for the prediction of operative risk. In transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) though, where the procedure itself is minimally invasive, the traditional risk assessment is supplemented by CTA. Through a consistent approach to the acquisition of high-quality images and the standardised reporting of annular measurements and adverse root and vascular features, patients at risk of complications can be identified. In turn, this may allow for a personalised procedural approach and treatment strategies devised to potentially reduce or mitigate this risk. This article provides a systematic and standardised approach to pre-procedural work-up with computed tomography angiography (CTA) and explores the current state of evidence and future areas of development in this rapidly developing field.

Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJ) have great potential in wound healing, bacterial disinfection and in cancer therapy. Recent studies pointed out that hydrogels can be used as screens during APPJ treatment, or even be used as reservoirs for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species generated by APPJ in liquids. Thus, novel applications are emerging for hydrogels which deserve fundamental exploration of the possible modifications undergone by the polymers in solution due to the reactivity with plasmas. Here we investigate the possible modifications occurred by APPJ treatment of an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-based triblock copolymer (tPEO) photo-crosslinkable hydrogel. While APPJ treatments lead to a certain degradation of the self-assembly of the polymeric chains at low concentrations (2 g/L), the polymeric chains are unaffected by APPJ and the hydrogel forming ability is kept. APPJ treatments induced a pre-crosslinking of the network with an increase of the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Overall, the small modifications induced allow thinking of polymer solutions with hydrogel forming ability a new platform for several applications related to plasma medicine, and thus, with potential in different therapies.

The joint forces and moments are commonly used in gait analysis. They can be computed by four different 3D inverse dynamic methods proposed in the literature, either based on vectors and Euler angles, wrenches and quaternions, homogeneous matrices, or generalized coordinates and forces. In order to analyze the influence of the inverse dynamic method, the joint forces and moments were computed during gait on nine healthy subjects. A ratio was computed between the relative dispersions (due to the method) and the absolute amplitudes of the gait curves. The influence of the inverse dynamic method was negligible at the ankle (2%) but major at the knee and the hip joints (40%). This influence seems to be due to the dynamic computation rather than the kinematic computation. Compared to the influence of the joint center location, the body segment inertial parameter estimation, and more, the influence of the inverse dynamic method is at least of equivalent importance. This point should be confirmed with other subjects, possibly pathologic, and other movements. In this paper, we demonstrate that the infrared detection threshold (i.e., the lowest detectable power of incident infrared radiation) of this new type of photoswitch can be effectively decreased by applying a bias voltage across the switch without compromising its key feature of near-zero standby power consumption and low false-alarm rate. We show that by exploiting the electrostatic pull-in effect (using bias voltage of ~7 V), a threshold as low as 76 nW can be achieved, which is the lowest threshold demonstrated to date for MPs. A mathematical model predicting the device threshold under a bias voltage is derived and verified by experiments. Furthermore, the effects of the bias on the device’s stability are carefully studied suggesting the existence of a tradeoff between the detection threshold and the false-alarm rate when the bias is higher than 85% of the pull-in voltage. The source of the instability that causes false alarms is found to originate from charge accumulation over time in the dielectric substrate surrounding the bottom contact, which we believe can be mitigated by an improved contact design. Another effect associated with high bias is the contact stiction after infrared-triggered pull-in. To address this, a microheater is integrated into the switch to reopen the contacts while consuming only $\sim 0.5~\mu \text{J}$ per operation. This paper thus presents an effective solution for post-fabrication threshold adjustment of MPs, which is useful for applications requiring variable thresholds.

Finite-element simulations have been used to predict intermodulation distortion in a gold-on-gold contact-type micro-electromechanical systems microswitch. The simulations are used to find the variation in switch resistance with input power that is a result of temperature-dependent electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity. This resistance variation leads to intermodulation distortion. In a similar way, a closed-form expression is found for the variation of resistance with contact force. It is found that this also produces a variation in resistance due to the input voltage variation at high frequencies, which also leads to intermodulation distortion. The sideband power due to thermal effects was found to be -103 dBc for a 1-W input signal leading to a third-order intermodulation intercept point of +81.3 dBm. The sideband power due to contact force effects was found to be less than -140 dBc for a 1-W signal. The methods for prediction of intermodulation distortion used in this paper are applied to measured data for the variation of resistance with switch current and gate voltage, leading to predictions of intermodulation levels based on real switch parameters. The effect of contact force on intermodulation can become significant if the difference frequency of the excitation is near the natural frequency of the device. Microelectromechanical devices are increasingly being integrated into electronic circuitry. One of these types of devices is the microswitch, which acts much like a three-terminal field-effect transistor (FET). While various microswitches are currently being developed, their dynamic behavior is not well understood. Upon closing, switches bounce several times before making permanent contact with the drain. In this paper, a time-transient finite difference analysis is used to model the dynamic behavior of two different electrostatically actuated microswitch configurations. The model uses dynamic Euler-Bernoulli beam theory for cantilevered beams, includes the electrostatic force from the gate, takes into account the squeeze-film damping between the switch and substrate, and includes a simple spring model of the contact tips. The model and simulation can be used as design tools to improve switch performance and reduce switch bounce in future designs. Infrared light of specific wavelength triggers a passive microsystem capable of producing a digitized output bit. State-of-the-art sensors use active electronics to detect and discriminate light1,2,3, sound4,5, vibration6,7 and other signals8,9. They consume power constantly, even when there is no relevant data to be detected, which limits their lifetime and results in high costs of deployment and maintenance for unattended sensor networks. Here we propose a device concept that fundamentally breaks this paradigm—the sensors remain dormant with near-zero power consumption until awakened by a specific physical signature associated with an event of interest. In particular, we demonstrate infrared digitizing sensors that consist of plasmonically enhanced micromechanical photoswitches (PMPs) that selectively harvest the impinging electromagnetic energy in design-defined spectral bands of interest, and use it to create mechanically a conducting channel between two electrical contacts, without the need for any additional power source. Our zero-power digitizing sensor prototypes produce a digitized output bit (that is, a large and sharp off-to-on state transition with an on/off conductance ratio >1012 and subthreshold slope >9 dec nW–1) when exposed to infrared radiation in a specific narrow spectral band (∼900 nm bandwidth in the mid-infrared) with the intensity above a power threshold of only ∼500 nW, which is not achievable with any existing photoswitch technologies.

This paper demonstrates, for the first time, a zero-power acoustic wake-up receiver for intrabody links, allowing Implanted Medical Devices (IMDs) to minimize the IDLE power consumption. This architecture is based on Directly Modulated Ultrasonic Transducers (dMUT) made of Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) as transmitter (TX), a Piezoelectric Micro Machined Ultrasonic Transducer (pMUT) array as receiver (RX), and a Micro Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) switch. The role of the dMUTs and the pMUT array is to establish an acoustic link sensitive to signals as low as 50mV pp peak-peak at a distance of 10cm. This low signal triggers the switch which will turn on the IMDs from an IDLE-state to a full power mode.

Abstract: The investigations realized on history of the psychology in Chile have been characterized for being general histories inscribed in a logic with pretensions of universality. From this point, and with the intention of mobilizing the visibility of the history of the discipline to local spaces, the present investigation aims to describe the biographical paths of psychologists, contributing elements from a descriptive qualitative perspective of character with biographical orien-tation. A study of case is exposed in a city of the south of Chile, using oral sources collected through in-depth inter-views. The main results are exposed around the categories of training, theoretical ascription and professional prac-tice of the interviewees. It is concluded that the biographical trajectories of psychologists articulate practices of the institutionalization of the discipline in the city.

147. Micromechanical switches fabricated using nickel surface micromachining

Micromechanical switches have been fabricated in electroplated nickel using a four-level surface micromachining process. The simplest devices are configured with three terminals, a source, a drain, and a gate and are 30 [[micro]meter] wide, 1 [[micro]meter] thick, and 65 [[micro]meter] long. A voltage applied between the gate and source closes the switch, connecting the source to the drain. Devices switch more than [10.sup.9] cycles before failure and exhibit long lifetimes hot switching currents up to 5 mA. The initial contact resistance is less than 50 m[Omega]. The breakdown (stand-off) voltage between the source and the drain is greater than 100 V and the off-current is less than 20 fA at 100 V. Microfabricated multiple-channel glass chips were successfully interfaced to an electrospray ionization mass spectrometer (ESI-MS). The microchip device was fabricated by standard photolithographic, wet chemical etching, and thermal bonding procedures. A high voltage was applied individually from each buffer reservoir for spraying sample sequentially from each channel. With the sampling orifice of the MS grounded, it was found that a liquid flow of 100-200 nL/min was necessary to maintain a stable electrospray. The detection limit of the microchip MS experiment for myoglobin was found to be lower than 6 x [10.sup.-8] M. Samples in 75% methanol were successfully analyzed with good sensitivity, as were aqueous samples. The parallel multiple-channel microchip system allowed ESI-MS analysis of different samples of standard peptides and proteins in one chip.
