A subsonic wind tunnel facility was designed and built to test and optimize various diffuser-collector box geometries at the one-twelfth scale. The facility was designed to run continuously at an inlet Mach number of 0.42 and an inlet hydraulic diameter Reynolds number of 340,000. Different combinations of diffusers, hubs, and exhaust collector boxes were designed and evaluated for overall optimum performance. Both 3-hole and 5-hole probes were traversed into the flow to generate multiple diffuser inlet and collector exit performance profile plots. Surface oil flow visualization was performed to gain an understanding of the complex 3D flow structures inside the diffuser-collector subsystem. The cutback radial hardware was found to increase the subsystem pressure recovery by over 10% from baseline resulting in an approximate 1% increase in gas turbine power output. Master of Science

Heat transfer inside rotating coolant channels have a significant impact in design of gas turbine airfoils and other rotating components such as generator windings. The effects of the Coriolis acceleration and centrifugal buoyancy have a significant impact on heat transfer behavior inside such rotating coolant channels due to the complex flow patterns of coolant. Detailed heat transfer knowledge greatly enhances the designers\' ability to validate numerical models of newly designed channels. A rotating experimental rig was designed and built to model scaled up coolant channels at speeds up to 750 rotations per minute (rpm). A camera is mounted onto the rotating test section and a transient liquid crystal technique is used to measure detailed heat transfer coefficients on a surface of interest. The experimental set-up is innovative, as it involves no surface heating of the test section, very little instrumentation beyond a few thermocouples and a spray coating of thermochromic liquid crystals on the test surface. To validate the test rig and the experimental method, multipass coolant channels with rib turbulators, large diameter radially outward channels with rib turbulators, and jet impingement cooling schemes are studied during rotation. 90deg, W, and M-shaped rib enhancements are studied and detailed heat transfer measurements clearly capture the heat transfer enhancement mechanisms with and without rotation. Jet impingement schemes with single and double rows, normal and off-angle jets, and a cross flow outlet condition are all studied under rotation. Non-rotating studies are also performed for baseline comparisons to rotating conditions. Large aspect ratio, diverging channels with dimple and rib turbulators are studied in a stationary condition. Results for all different test geometries show good comparisons with published studies indicating that the rotating rig and experimental method are valid. Jet impingement schemes produce higher heat transfer compared to the two-pass channels with ribs, however pressure losses are significantly higher. The fewer the jets and H/d=1 produces the highest pressure losses with no significant gain in heat transfer. Off angle jets at H/d=1 produces very high pressure losses with no heat transfer advantage. A final study with radially outward coolant channels is performed with the highest rotation speeds. The structure, test section, and camera are thoroughly designed to withstand the exceptional g-forces. Heat transfer in the radial channels with and without rotation show very little effect of rotation due to the small rotation number. Ph. D.

The contribution of present research work is to experimentally investigate the effects of blowing ratio and mainstream Mach number/Reynolds number (from 0.6/8.5X10⁵ to 1.0/1.4X10⁶) on the performance of the fan-shaped hole injected turbine blade and vane. The study was operated with high freestream turbulence intensity (12% at the inlet) and large turbulence length scales (0.26 for blade, 0.28 for vane, normalized by the cascade pitch of 58.4mm and 83.3mm respectively). Both convective heat transfer coefficient, in terms of Nusselt number, and adiabatic effectiveness are provided in the results. Present research work also numerically investigates the shock/film cooling interaction. A detailed analysis on the physics of the shock/film cooling interaction in the blade cascade is provided. The results of present research suggests the following major conclusions. Compared to the showerhead only vane, the addition of fan-shaped hole injection on the turbine Nozzle Guide Vane (NGV) increases the Net Heat Flux Reduction (NHFR) 2.6 times while consuming 1.6 times more coolant. For the blade, combined with the surface curvature effect, the increase of Mach number/Reynolds number results in an improved film cooling effectiveness on the blade suction side, but a compromised cooling performance on the blade pressure side. A quick drop of cooling effectiveness occurs at the shock impingement on the blade suction side near the trailing edge. The CFD results indicate that this adiabatic effectiveness drop was caused by the strong secondary flow after shock impingement, which lifts coolant away from the SS surface, and increases the mixing. This secondary flow is related to the spanwise non-uniform of the shock impingement. Ph. D.

The present study focuses on local heat transfer characteristics on the tip and near-tip regions of a turbine blade with a flat tip, tested under transonic conditions in a stationary, 2-D linear cascade consisting of seven blades, the three center blades having a variable tip clearance gap. The effects of tip clearance and exit Mach number on heat transfer distribution were investigated on the tip surface using a transient infrared thermography technique. In addition, thin film gages were used to study similar effects on the near-tip regions at 94% based on engine blade span of the pressure and suction sides. The experiments were conducted at the Virginia Tech transonic blow-down wind tunnel facility with a seven-blade linear cascade. Surface oil flow visualizations on the blade tip region were carried-out to shed some light on the leakage flow structure. Experiments were performed at three exit Mach numbers of 0.7, 0.85, and 1.05 for two different tip clearances of 0.9% and 1.8% based on engine blade span. The exit Mach numbers tested correspond to exit Reynolds numbers of 7.6 x 105, 9.0 x 105, and 1.1 x 106 based on blade true chord. The tests were performed with a freestream turbulence intensity of 12%. Results at 0.85 exit Mach showed that an increase in the tip gap clearance translates into a 12% increase in the heat transfer coefficients on the blade tip surface. Similarly, at 0.9% tip clearance, an increase in exit Mach number from 0.85 to 1.05 also led to a 24% increase in heat transfer on the tip. High heat transfer was obtained at the leading edge area of the blade tip, and an increase in the tip clearance gap and exit Mach number augmented this leading edge heat transfer. At 94% of engine blade span on the suction side near the tip, a peak in heat transfer was observed in all test cases at an s/C of 0.66 due to the onset of a downstream leakage vortex. At the design condition, this peak represents an increase of a factor of 2.5 from the immediate preceding s/C location. An increase in both the tip gap and exit Mach number resulted in an increase, followed by a decrease in the near-tip suction side heat transfer. On the near-tip pressure side, a slight increase in heat transfer was observed with increased tip gap and exit Mach number. In general, the suction side heat transfer is greater than the pressure side heat transfer as a result of the suction side leakage vortices. Master of Science

A subsonic wind tunnel facility was built and tested as part of a base line test investigating flow within a diffuser-collector. Facility controls allowed the quarter scale model to match both Reynolds number and Mach number. Mass averaged conditions at the diffuser inlet during testing were determined as 1.939 ? 106 for Reynolds number based upon diffuser inlet hydraulic diameter, and 0.418 for Mach number. A flow conditioning section prior to test section contained several interchangeable sections. Flow conditioning components were used to create flow characteristic of that leaving the last stage of a land-based gas turbine. The diffuser-collector subsystem was evaluated through the use of wall static pressure measurements, a variety of probe traverse measurements, and Stereo-PIV. Flow within the collector and diffuser were determined to be heavily dependent upon the collector geometry. PIV measurements showed the development of two large counter rotating vortices within the collector. Each symmetric vortex grew and shifted according to the collector geometry while creating complex regions of flow. Pressure recovery within the diffuser was in range of 0.47 to 0.78, and would drop to 0.52 at the collector exit. The drop in pressure recovery was presumed to be a combination of inefficient diffusion in the collector and losses due to the vortices. The baseline test was found to be successful in terms of facility design, and determining the critical flow phenomena. Further testing and experimentation are necessary to evaluate specific details of the collector geometry's effect upon the pressure recovery and flow development. Master of Science

Airfoil endwall contouring has been widely studied during the past two decades for the reduction of secondary losses in turbine passages. Although many endwall contouring methods have been suggested by researchers, an analytical tool based on the passage design parameters is still not available for designers. Hence, the best endwall contour shape is usually decided through an optimization study. Moreover, a general guideline for the endwall shape variation can be extrapolated from the existing literature. It has not been validated whether the optimum endwall shape for one passage can be fitted to other similar passage geometry to achieve, least of all a non-optimum but a definite, reduction in losses. Most published studies were conducted at low exit Mach numbers and only recently some studies on the effect of endwall contouring on aerodynamics performance of a turbine passage at high exit Mach numbers have been published. There is, however, no study available in the open literature for a very high turning blade with a transonic design exit Mach number and the effect of endwall contouring on the heat transfer performance of a turbine passage. During the present study, a robust, aerodynamic performance based numerical optimization methodology for turbine endwall contouring has been developed. The methodology is also adaptable to a range of geometry optimization problems in turbomachinery. It is also possible to use the same methodology for multi-objective aero-thermal optimization. The methodology was applied to a high turning transonic turbine blade passage to achieve a geometry based on minimum total pressure loss criterion. The geometry was then compared with two other endwall geometries. The first geometry is based on minimum secondary kinetic energy value instead of minimum total pressure loss criterion. The second geometry is based on a curve combination based geometry generation method found in the literature. A normalized contoured surface topology was extracted from a previous study that has similar blade design parameters. This surface was then fitted to the turbine passage under study in order to investigate the effect of such trend based surface fitting. Aerodynamic response of these geometries has been compared in detail with the baseline case without any endwall contouring. A new non-contoured baseline design and two contoured endwall designs were provided by Siemens Energy, Inc. The pitch length for these designs is about 25% higher than the turbine passage used for the endwall optimization study. The aerodynamic performance of these endwalls was studied through numerical simulations. Heat transfer performance of these endwall geometries was experimentally investigated in the transonic turbine cascade facility at Virginia Tech. One of the contoured geometries was based on optimum aerodynamic loss reduction criterion while the other was based on optimum heat transfer performance criterion. All the three geometries were experimentally tested at design and off-design Mach number conditions. The study revealed that endwall contouring results in significant performance benefit from the heat transfer performance point of view. Ph. D.

Gas turbine companies are always focused on reducing capital costs and increasing overall efficiency. There are numerous advantages in reducing the number of airfoils per stage in the turbine section. While increased airfoil loading offers great advantages like low cost and weight, they also result in increased aerodynamic losses and associated issues. The strength of secondary flows is influenced by the upstream boundary layer thickness as well as the overall flow turning angle through the blade row. Secondary flows result in stagnation pressure loss which accounts for a considerable portion of the total stagnation pressure loss occurring in a turbine passage. A turbine designer strives to minimize these aerodynamic losses through design changes and geometrical effects. Performance of airfoils with varying loading levels and turning angles at transonic flow conditions are investigated in this study. The pressure difference between the pressure side and suction side of an airfoil gives an indication of the loading level of that airfoil. Secondary loss generation and the 3D flow near the endwalls of turbine blades are studied in detail. Detailed aerodynamic loss measurements, both in the pitchwise as well as spanwise directions, are conducted at 0.1 axial chord and 1.0 axial chord locations downstream of the trailing edge. Static pressure measurements on the airfoil surface and endwall pressure measurements were carried out in addition to downstream loss measurements. The application of endwall contouring to reduce secondary losses is investigated to try and understand when contouring can be beneficial. A detailed study was conducted on the effectiveness of endwall contouring on two different blades with varying airfoil spacing. Heat transfer experiments on the endwall were also conducted to determine the effect of endwall contouring on surface heat transfer distributions. Heat transfer behavior has significant effect on the cooling flow needs and associated aerodynamic problems of coolant-mainstream mixing. One of the primary objectives of this study is to provide data under transonic conditions that can be used to confirm/refine loss predictions for the effect of various Mach numbers and gas turning. The cascade exit Mach numbers were varied within a range from 0.6 to 1.1. A published experimental study on the effect of end wall contouring on such high turning blades at high exit Mach numbers is not available in open literature. Hence, the need to understand the parametric effects of endwall contouring on aerodynamic and heat transfer performance under these conditions. Ph. D.

Increased efficiency and durability of gas turbine components is driven by demands for reduced fuel consumption and increased reliability in aircraft and power generation applications. The complex flow near the endwall of an axial gas turbine has been identified as a significant contributing factor to aerodynamic loss and increased part temperatures. Three-dimensional (non-axisymmetric) contouring of the endwall surface has been shown to reduce aerodynamic losses, but the effect of the contouring on endwall heat transfer is not well understood. This research focused on understanding the general flow physics of contouring and the sensitivity of the contouring to perturbations arising from leakage features present in an engine. Two scaled low-speed cascades were designed for spatially-resolved measurements of endwall heat transfer and film cooling. One cascade was intended for flat and contoured endwall studies without considering typical engine leakage features. The other cascade modeled the gaps present between a stator and rotor and between adjacent blades on a wheel, in addition to the non-axisymmetric endwall contouring. Comparisons between a flat and contoured endwall showed that the contour increased endwall heat transfer and increased turbulence in the forward portion of the passage due to displacement of the horseshoe vortex. However, the contour decreased heat transfer further into the passage, particularly in regions of high heat transfer, due to delayed development of the passage vortex and reduced boundary layer skew. Realistic leakage features such as the stator-rotor rim seal had a significant effect on the endwall heat transfer, although leakage flow from the rim seal only affected the horseshoe vortex. The contours studied were not effective at reducing the impact of secondary flows on endwall heat transfer and loss when realistic leakage features were also considered. The most significant factor in loss generation and high levels of endwall heat transfer was the presence of a platform gap between adjacent airfoils. Ph. D.

A supersonic wind tunnel, with a 20" x 20'" test section cross sectional area, was designed and constructed at the Techsburg Wind Tunnel Facility in order to determine the lift and drag on irregularly shaped fragments in supersonic flow. Prior to beginning the wind tunnel design process, a blowdown analysis model was created in order to determine the influence of a number of parameters on tunnel run time and test gas properties throughout the tunnel circuit. The design of the settling chamber, test section, supersonic nozzles, diffuser, and exhaust are presented in this thesis. Diffuser performance has a large influence on wind tunnel efficiency and run time. Therefore, significant efforts should be taken in order to attain the highest possible pressure recovery within the diffuser. The design of wind tunnel components, as well as their stress analysis, was conducted using SolidWorks. The control valve and silencer were sized and selected for the expected tunnel operating conditions. Since the control valve tends to encompass a significant portion of the overall tunnel cost, care must be taken to ensure it has a large enough flow capacity to produce the desired test conditions. Also, attempts must be made to accurately predict the total pressure loss through the silencer, since this loss can have a large impact on the total pressure ratio necessary to produce the design Mach number. Upon completion of the design process, the supersonic wind tunnel was assembled, and shakedown testing was conducted. During shakedown testing it was determined that the wind tunnel was capable of producing Mach 2 flow in the test section. Following shakedown testing, a flow survey was conducted in order to ensure uniform Mach number flow exists throughout the region occupied by the fragments. Based on the flow survey it was determined that within the middle 60% of the test section, the average Mach number was 1.950 and varied by only 0.56% within this region. Two irregularly shaped fragments were tested at Mach 2 flow, over an effective 360° pitch sweep, with wind tunnel runs performed every 10 degrees. Based on the measured force data for both fragments, the lift appeared to follow a sinusoidal curve, with minimum values at 0, 90, and 180° balance pitch angle, and maximum values occurring around 45 and 135° pitch angle. The drag force was observed to follow a gradual curve with minimum values at 0 and 180° balance pitch angle, as expected since the fragment presented area is generally least in this orientation. The maximum drag was found to occur at a balance pitch angle of 90°, once again as expected since the fragment presented area is generally greatest at this angle. It was also observed that the fragment drag tended to be greater for a fragment orientation which places the concave side of the fragment into the direction of the flow. Master of Science

Coal gasification and combustion can introduce contaminants in the solid or molten state depending on the gas clean up procedures used, coal composition and operating conditions. These byproducts when combined with high temperatures and high gas stream velocities can cause Deposition, Erosion, and Corrosion (DEC) of turbine components downstream of the combustor section. The objective of this dissertation is to use computational techniques to investigate the dynamics of ash deposition in a leading edge vane geometry with film cooling. Large Eddy Simulations (LES) is used to model the flow field of the coolant jet-mainstream interaction and the deposition of syngas ash in the leading edge region of a turbine vane is modeled using a Lagrangian framework. The three row leading edge vane geometry is modeled as a symmetric semi-cylinder with a flat afterbody. One row of coolant holes is located along the stagnation line and the other two rows of coolant holes are located at ±21.3° from the stagnation line. The coolant is injected at 45° to the vane surface with 90° compound angle injection. The coolant to mainstream density ratio is set to unity and the freestream Reynolds number based on leading edge diameter is 32000. Coolant to mainstream blowing ratios (B.R.) of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 are investigated. It is found that the stagnation cooling jets penetrate much further into the mainstream, both in the normal and lateral directions, than the off-stagnation jets for all blowing ratios. Jet dilution is characterized by turbulent diffusion and entrainment. The strength of both mechanisms increases with blowing ratio. The adiabatic effectiveness in the stagnation region initially increases with blowing ratio but then generally decreases as the blowing ratio increases further. Immediately downstream of off-stagnation injection, the adiabatic effectiveness is highest at B.R.=0.5. However, in spite of the larger jet penetration and dilution at higher blowing ratios, the larger mass of coolant injected increases the effectiveness with blowing ratio further downstream of injection location. A novel deposition model which integrates different sources of published experimental data to form a holistic numerical model is developed to predict ash deposition. The deposition model computes the ash sticking probabilities as a function of particle temperature and ash composition. This deposition model is validated with available experimental results on a flat plate inclined at 45°. Subsequently, this model was then used to study ash deposition in a leading edge vane geometry with film cooling for coolant to mainstream blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. Ash particle sizes of 5, 7, 10μm are considered. Under the conditions of the current simulations, ash particles have Stokes numbers less than unity of O(1) and hence are strongly affected by the flow and thermal fields generated by the coolant interaction with the main-stream. Because of this, the stagnation coolant jets are successful in pushing and/or cooling the particles away from the surface and minimizing deposition and erosion in the stagnation region. Capture efficiency for eight different ash compositions are investigated. Among all the ash samples, ND ash sample shows the highest capture efficiency due to its low softening temperature. A trend that is common to all particle sizes is that the percentage capture efficiency is least for blowing ratio of 1.5 as the coolant is successful in pushing the particles away from the surface. However, further increasing the blowing ratio to 2.0, the percentage capture efficiency increases as more number of particles are transported to the surface by strong mainstream entrainment by the coolant jets. An experimental study was performed to measure surface Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness on a film cooled first stage nozzle guide vane using a transient thin film gauge (TFG) technique. The information presented attempts to further characterize the performance of shaped hole film cooling by taking measurements on a row of shaped holes downstream of leading edge showerhead injection on both the pressure and suction surfaces (hereafter PS and SS) of a 1st stage NGV. Tests were performed at engine representative Mach and Reynolds numbers and high inlet turbulence intensity and large length scale at the Virginia Tech Transonic Cascade facility. Three exit Mach/Reynolds number conditions were tested: 1.0/1,400,000; 0.85/1,150,000; and 0.60/850,000 where Reynolds number is based on exit conditions and vane chord. At Mach/Reynolds numbers of 1.0/1,450,000 and 0.85/1,150,000 three blowing ratio conditions were tested: BR = 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. At a Mach/Reynolds number of 0.60/850,000, two blowing ratio conditions were tested: BR = 1.5 and 2.0. All tests were performed at inlet turbulence intensity of 12% and length scale normalized by leading edge diameter of 0.28. Film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer results compared well with previously published data, showing a marked effectiveness improvement (up to 2.5x) over the showerhead only NGV and agreement with published showerhead-shaped hole data. NHFR was shown to increase substantially (average 2.6x increase) with the addition of shaped holes, with only a small increase (average 1.6x increase) in required coolant mass flow. Heat transfer and effectiveness augmentation with increasing blowing ratio was shown on the pressure side, however the suction side was shown to be less sensitive to changing blowing ratio. Boundary layer transition location was shown to be within a consistent region on the suction side regardless of blowing ratio and exit Mach number. Master of Science

There has been recent incentive for understanding the possible deleterious effects that manufacturing deviations can have on compressor blade performance. This is of particular importance in today's age, as compressor designs are pushing operating limits by employing fewer stages with higher loadings and are designed to operate at ever higher altitudes. Deviations in these advanced, as well as legacy designs, could negatively affect the performance and operation of a core compressor; thus, a numerical investigation to quantify manufacturing deviations and their effects is undertaken. Data from three radial sections of every compressor blade in a single row of a production compressor is used as the basis for this investigation. Deviations from the compressor blade design intent to the as-manufactured blades are quantified with a statistical method known as principle component analysis (PCA). MISES, an Euler solver coupled with integral boundary-layer calculations, is used to analyze the effects that the aforementioned deviations have on compressor blade performance when the inlet flow conditions produce a Mach number of approximately 0.7 and a Reynolds number of approximately 6.5e5. It was found that the majority of manufacturing deviations were within a range of plus or minus 4 percent of the design intent, and deviations at the leading edge had a critical effect on performance. Of particular interest is the fact that deviations at the leading edge not only degraded performance but significantly changed the boundary-layer behavior from that of the design case. The design of last stage low pressure steam (LP) turbines has become increasingly complicated as turbine manufacturers have pushed for larger and more efficient turbines. The tip sections of these LP turbines encounter condensing wet steam at high velocities resulting in increased losses. These losses are difficult to predict with computational fluid dynamic models. To study these losses and improve the design of LP turbines a study was commissioned to determine the feasibility and cost of a steam cascade facility for measuring low pressure turbine blade tip section aerodynamic and thermodynamic performance. This study focused on two objectives: 1) design a steam production facility capable of simulating actual LP turbine operating conditions, and 2) design an instrumentation system to measure blade performance in wet steam. The steam production facility was designed to allow the test section size to be selected later. A computer code was developed to model the facility cycle and provide equipment requirements. Equipment to meet these requirements, vendors to provide it, and costs were found for a range of test section sizes. A method to control the test section conditions was also developed. To design the instrumentation system two methods of measuring blade losses through entropy generation were proposed. The first method uses existing total pressure probe techniques. The second method uses advanced particle imaging velocimetry techniques possibly for the first time in wet steam. A new method is then proposed to modify the two techniques to take measurements at non-equilibrium states. Finally accuracy issues are discussed and the challenges associated with achieving periodic flow in this facility are investigated. Master of Science

In the drive to increase cycle efficiency, gas turbine designers have increased turbine inlet temperatures well beyond the metallurgical limits of engine components. In order to prevent failure and meet life requirements, turbine components must be cooled well below these hot gas temperatures. Film cooling is a widely employed cooling technique whereby air is extracted from the compressor and ejected through holes on the surfaces of hot gas path components. The cool air forms a protective film around the surface of the part. Accurate numerical prediction of film cooling performance is extremely difficult so experiments are required to validate designs and CFD tools. In this study, a first stage turbine vane with five rows of showerhead cooling was instrumented with platinum thin-film gauges to experimentally characterize film cooling performance. The vane was tested in a transonic vane cascade in Virginia Tech's heated, blow-down wind tunnel. Two freestream exit Mach numbers of 0.76 and 1.0—corresponding to exit Reynolds numbers based on vane chord of 1.1x106 and 1.5x106, respectively—were tested at an inlet freestream turbulence intensity of two percent and an integral length scale normalized by vane pitch of 0.05. The showerhead cooling scheme was tested at blowing ratios of 0 (no cooling), 1.5, and 2.0 and a density ratio of 1.35. Midspan Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness distributions over the surface of the vane are presented. Film cooling was found to augment heat transfer and reduce adiabatic wall temperature downstream of injection. In general, an increase in blowing ratio was shown to increase augmentation and film cooling effectiveness. Increasing Reynolds number was shown to increase heat transfer and reduce effectiveness. Finally, comparing low turbulence measurements (Tu = 2%) to measurements performed at high freestream turbulence (Tu = 16%) by Nasir et al. [13] showed that large-scale high freestream turbulence can reduce heat transfer coefficient downstream of injection. Master of Science

An experimental and numerical investigation was conducted to determine the film cooling effectiveness of a normal slot and angled slot under realistic engine Mach number conditions. Freestream Mach numbers of 0.65 and 1.3 were tested. For the normal slot, hot gas ingestion into the slot was observed at low blowing ratios (M < 0.25). At high blowing ratios (M > 0.6) the cooling film was observed to "lift off" from the surface. For the 30o angled slot, the data was found to collapse using the blowing ratio as a scaling parameter (x/Ms). Results from the current experiment were compared with the subsonic data published to confirm this test procedure. For the angled slot, at the supersonic freestream Mach number, the current experiment shows that at the same x/Ms, the film cooling effectiveness increases by as much as 25% as compared to the subsonic case. The results of the experiment also show that at the same x/Ms, the film cooling effectiveness of the angled slot is considerably higher than that of the normal slot, at both subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers. The flow physics for the slot tests considered here are also described with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations in the subsonic and supersonic regimes. Master of Science

This paper investigates the effect of blowing ratio on the film cooling performance of a showerhead film cooled first stage turbine blade. The blade was instrumented with double-sided thin film heat flux gages to experimentally characterize the Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness distributions over the surface of the blade. The blade was arranged in a two-dimensional, linear cascade within a transonic, blowdown type wind tunnel. The wind tunnel freestream conditions were varied over two exit Mach numbers, Me=0.78 and Me=1.01, with an inlet freestream turbulence intensity of 12% , with an integral length scale normalized by blade chord of 0.26 generated by a passive, mesh turbulence grid. The coolant conditions were varied by changing the ratio of coolant to freestream mass flux, blowing ratio, over three values, BR=0.60, 1.0, and 1.5 while keeping a density ratio of 1.7. Experimental results show that ingestion of freestream flow into the showerhead cooling plenum can occur below a blowing ratio of 0.6. Film cooling increases Nusselt number over the uncooled case and increasing the blowing ratio also increases Nusselt number. At a blowing ratio of 1.5 and Me=1.01 a large drop in effectiveness just downstream of injection on both the pressure and suction surfaces is evidence of jet liftoff. The blowing ratio of 1.0 was found to have superior heat load reduction over the blade surface at both freestream conditions tested. The blowing ratio of 1.0 reduced the heat load by as much as 39% and 32% at Me=0.78 and 1.01, respectively. Master of Science

Ducted fan VTOL UAVs are currently being designed for use by the Army for surveillance and reconnaissance in the battlefield. The vehicle tested in this research is part of the Honeywell MAV program. Able to be carried in a backpack by a single soldier, it has a duct diameter of 11.5-in. and weighs approximately 20-lbs at takeoff. It is designed for flight up to 50-knots with fan speeds varying between 5000 and 8500 RPM. Reynolds numbers, based on the duct diameter, were on the order of Re = 0.96 x 106 to 4.6 x 106. Various control effectors were mounted to the vehicle and tested for maximum control authority to reduce the nose-up pitch moment created during forward flight or with crosswinds present. Static and wind tunnel tests were conducted to measure each control effector's performance. Box vanes, mounted downstream of the duct, utilized four assemblies, each with three vanes and one flap. This configuration showed adequate results in generating a nose-down pitch moment. Duct deflectors, mounted on the windward strut upstream of the duct, reduced the windward lift produced by both the fan and duct, resulting in a nose-down pitch moment. Opposed vanes, utilizing two vanes and flaps for each of the four assemblies, were designed with the same surface area as the box vanes. With each pair capable of independent vane movement, the opposed vanes were tested with the vanes rotating in tandem for a basic elevator deflection and with the leading edges touching, disrupting the flow at the duct exit. Opposed vanes combined the capabilities of the box vanes and duct deflector. Results show that the opposed vanes were the most practical control effector, offering the most control authority for maximum nose-down pitch moment (up to 80% better) with minimal loss in thrust. Modern gas turbine engines operate in environments where particle ingestion, especially sand ingestion, can affect the cooling of various turbine parts. The most critical areas are in the combustor and the first stage components of the turbine. Gas temperatures in these areas are the highest compared to other areas and exceed the melting points of the constituent metals. To extend the life of hot section components, internal convective cooling and external film-cooling are required. This study examined the effects of sand ingestion on various cooling geometries. The first part investigated impingement and film-cooling implemented in a double-walled cooling geometry for the purpose of reducing sand size and thereby reducing blockage due to sand ingestion. The second part analyzed the cooling performance of actual turbine blade outer air seals injected with sand. Results from these studies showed areas of impingement that promote particle fragmentation are advantageous in reducing particle size and reducing blockage due to particle ingestion. Blockage was significantly increased based on the percentage of large particles present in the sand samples. Increasing the pressure ratio and decreasing the sand amount were also shown to reduce blockage. Master of Science

Control of radiated acoustic noise is vital to the survivability and the detectability of submersible watercraft. Two primary sources of radiated fluid noise in submersible vessels are the boundary layer turbulence along the forebody and propulsor fluid-structure interaction. The propulsor contains several locations of such interaction, one of which was investigated in this research. Specifically, this research focused on experimentally investigating active flow control techniques to reduce rotor-stator interaction noise sources. Two of the three flow control configurations applied to the flow involved the application of active flow control to the leading edge of a single exit guide vane (EGV) mounted downstream of a seven-bladed rotor. The leading edge blowing configuration (LEB) consisted of a single jet expelled from the leading edge of the EGV against the oncoming flow. This interaction between the wake and jet should offset or disrupt the coherency of any incoming flow structures. The second active flow control method applied to the EGV involved a tangential blowing configuration (TB) where two symmetric tangential jets were used to create an insulating fluid layer that reduced the effect of passing flow structures on the EGV. The final flow control design was the implementation of trailing edge wake filling on a three bladed rotor. A rotor was designed to ingest lower velocity flow from the hub and pump the fluid out of a blowing slot at the blade trailing edge. The blowing slot was concentrated on the outer third of the blade span in order to maximize pumping effect. In order to quantify the effects of the active flow control techniques on rotor-stator interaction, the fluctuating lift force on the EGV was measured. Since this fluctuating force serves as a primary acoustic source, the effects of the active flow control on the radiated interaction sound can be estimated. These active flow control techniques were intended for reduction of blade passing frequency tonal sound radiation. The LEB configuration showed minor changes in overall spectral response; however, there was no significant reduction in forcing at the BPF measured. Similarly the TB configuration also yielded no measurable change in BPF tonal forcing. The first generation design of the self-pumping rotor also proved to have problems. Experiments showed that the application of the flow control on the self-pumping rotor did not generate the expected increase in torque demand or changes in the tonal forcing on the EGV. Field alterations to the rotor were unable to improve the performance; therefore, the conclusion became that the initial design was unable to pump fluid due to excessive pressure losses. Further design iterations are required to perfect the functionality of the self-pumping rotor. Master of Science

Aerodynamic measurements were taken over models of the Boeing 777 high fidelity isolated landing gear in the 6- by 6-foot Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel (VT-SWT) at a free-stream Mach number of 0.16. Noise control devices (NCD) were developed at Virginia Tech [9] to reduce noise by shielding gear components, reducing wake interactions and by streamlining the flow around certain landing gear components. Aerodynamic measurements were performed to understand the flow over the landing gear and also changes in the flow between "Baseline" and "NCD" configurations (without and with Noise Control Devices respectively). Hot-film, Pitot-static measurements and flow visualization using tufts were performed over an isolated 26% scale-model high fidelity landing gear for the "Baseline" and "NCD" configurations. Contours of turbulence intensity, normalized wake velocity and normalized total pressure loss for both configurations are compared. The "Baseline" configuration was also compared with the NASA Ames study conducted by Horne et al [7]. Hot-film measurements are also compared to Microphone Phased Array results which were acquired at Virginia Tech by Ravetta [8]. A novel technique for processing hot-film measurements by breaking turbulence into octave bands as acoustic measurements is presented. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements were taken at six different locations over the 13% scale-model landing gear with no door and at a truck angle of zero degrees. Results are compared to PIV measurements taken over the wheels of a four-wheel landing gear by Lazos [10-12]. PIV results such as average velocity contours and vectors, streamlines and instantaneous velocity contours and vectors are presented. Results presented from PIV and flow visualization are in good agreement with results from Lazos [10-12]. Master of Science

Within a gas turbine engine, the turbine nozzle guide vanes are subjected to very harsh conditions from the highly turbulent and hot gases exiting the combustor. The temperature and pressure fields exiting combustors are highly nonuniform and dictate the heat transfer and aero losses that occur in the turbine passages. To better understand these effects, the goal of this work was to develop an adjustable combustor exit profile simulator for the Turbine Research Facility (TRF) at the Air Force Research Laboratory. The TRF is a high temperature, high pressure, short duration blow-down test facility that is capable of matching several aerodynamic and thermal nondimensional engine parameters including Reynolds number, Mach number, pressure ratio, corrected mass flow, gas to metal temperature ratio, and corrected speed. The primary research objective was to design, install, and verify a non-reacting simulator device that can provide representative combustor exit total pressure and temperature profiles to the inlet of the TRF turbine test section. This required the upstream section of the facility to be redesigned into multiple concentric annuli that serve the purpose of injecting high momentum dilution jets and low momentum film cooling jets into a central annular chamber, similar to a turbine engine combustor. The design of the section allows for variations in injection levels to generate different pressure profiles with elevated turbulence. The dilution and film cooling temperatures can also be varied to create a variety of exit temperature profiles similar to real combustors. The impact of the generated temperature and pressure profiles on turbine heat transfer and secondary flow development was ultimately investigated. Proposed optimal inlet conditions for the turbine tested in this research effort were determined based on the measured data corresponding to the combustor simulator exit profiles that minimized vane heat transfer and total pressure loss. Gas turbine engines for propulsion operate under harsh conditions including gas temperatures that exceed the melting point of the metal, high mechanical stresses, and particulate ingestion such as sand. To maintain a low and uniform metal temperature to extend the life of a turbine component, a complex scheme of internal convective cooling and external film-cooling is required. Gas turbine engines operated in sandy or dusty environments can ingest a large quantity of sand into the mainstream and, more importantly, into the cooling system. Sand ingested into the coolant system has the potential to reduce or block off the flow intended to cool the turbine blades or vanes. If the source of coolant air to a critical region of a turbine blade were partially blocked, it would result in a substantial reduction in component life. This study includes establishing a methodology for testing sand ingestion characteristics on a simulated turbine component with film-cooling holes at room temperature and engine temperatures. The study evaluates a simple array of laser drilled film-cooling holes, similar to a showerhead on the leading edge of an airfoil. The blocking characteristics of this design indicate that increasing the airflow or decreasing the sand amount results in a decreased blockage. It was also determined that as the metal temperature increases, the blockage from a given amount of sand increases. The methodology used in the primary portion of this thesis was modified to test sand ingestion characteristics on actual turbine blades with film-cooling holes at room temperature and engine temperatures. The study evaluated the blockage performance of several different turbine blades including the F-100-229-full, F-100-229-TE, and the F-119 with a new trailing edge cooling methodology know as a microcircuit. It was shown that increasing the airflow or pressure ratio, or decreasing the sand amount would result in decreased blockage. It was also shown that over a certain metal and coolant temperature, the blockage is significantly worsened. However, it was also shown on the F-119 turbine blade that below a given metal temperature, there is no impact of metal or coolant temperature on sand blockage. Master of Science

Efficiency and power output of gas turbines improve with an increase in turbine inlet temperatures, and blade designers continually seek out new methods of increasing these temperatures. Increases in turbine inlet temperatures are achieved by utilizing a combination of internal convective cooling and external film-cooling. This study will evaluate several novel cooling schemes for turbine airfoils, called microcircuits. Microcircuits are placed inside the turbine blade wall, and the features turbulate the air and increase heat transfer surface area, thereby augmenting convective cooling. The coolant flow then exits internal cooling passages to the external side of the blade. Here the coolant forms a protective layer along the external surface of the blade to protect the blade from the heated mainstream flow. In the current study, a low-speed large-scale wind tunnel facility was developed to measure internal heat transfer coefficients and external adiabatic effectiveness, using thermal liquid crystallography and infrared thermography. This test facility is unique in that it can be used to test the effects of internal cooling features on external film cooling. Results show that the highest augmentations in internal heat transfer were seen at the lowest Reynolds numbers. Internal features affected the shapes of external film-cooling contours, but the magnitudes of the spanwise averaged values did not change significantly with changes in internal geometry. Several flow control schemes were designed and tested to determine the most suitable method for reducing the momentum deficit in a rotor wake and thus attenuate rotor-stator interaction noise. A secondary concern of the project was to reduce the amount of blowing required air for wake filling and thus limit the efficiency penalty in an aircraft engine environment. Testing was performed in a linear blow down cascade wind tunnel, which produced an inlet Mach number of 0.345. The cascade consisted of five blades with the stagger angle, pitch, and airfoil cross-section representative of 90% span of the rotor geometry for NASA's Active Noise Control Fan (ANCF) test rig. The Reynolds number for the tests was based on inlet conditions and a chord length of 4 inches. Trailing edge jets, trailing edge slots, ejector pumps, and pressure/suction side jets were among the configurations tested for wake filling. A range of mass flow percentages were applied to each configuration and a pressure loss coefficient was determined for each. Considerable reduction in wake losses took place for discrete jet blowing techniques as well as pressure side and suction side jets. In the case of the pressure and suction side jets, near full wake filling occurred at 0.75% of the total mass flow. In terms of loss coefficients and calculated momentum coefficients, the suction/pressure surface jets were the most successful. Jets located upstream of the trailing edge helped to re-energize the momentum deficits in the wake region by using a flow pattern capable of mixing the region while also adding momentum to the wake. The slotted configuration was modeled after NASA's current blowing scheme and served as a baseline for comparison for all data. Digital particle image velocimetry was performed for flow visualizations as well as velocity analysis in the wake region. Master of Science

Cooling of turbine parts in a gas turbine engine is necessary for operation as the temperature of combustion gases is higher than the melting temperature of the turbine materials. The gap between rotating turbine blades and the stationary shroud provides an unintended flow path for hot gases. Gases that flow through the tip region cause pressure losses in the turbine section and high heat loads to the blade tip. This thesis studies the heat transfer on an innovative tip geometry intended to help reduce aerodynamic losses. The blade tip has a depression (shelf) on the tip surface along much of the pressure side of the blade and film-cooling holes along the depression. This research experimentally measured the effect of the shelf, coolant flow and tip gap on heat transfer on the blade tip. Stationary experiments were performed in a low speed wind tunnel on a linear cascade with two different tip gaps and multiple coolant flow rates through the film-cooling holes. Tests showed that baseline Nusselt numbers on the tip surface were reduced with the shelf tip compared with a flat tip. Measurements indicated that film-cooling was more effective with a small tip gap than with a large tip gap. Experimental and computational results demonstrated a lack of coolant spreading that was detrimental to regions between the film-cooling holes. While the coolant was effective on the blade tip, the leading and trailing edge regions were found to have high heat transfer coefficients with little available cooling. Master of Science

The study of the flow of a fan blade was conducted to improve tonal fan noise reduction by optimizing an existing flow control configuration. The current configuration consisted of a trailing edge Slot with a flow control area of 0.045 in² per inch span with an exit angle of -3.3° with respect to the blade exit angle. Two other flow control configurations containing discrete jets were investigated. For the first configuration, the trailing edge jets (TEJ), the fan blade was modified with discrete jets spaced 0.3 inches apart with a flow control area of 0.01 in² per inch span positioned on the trailing edge aimed at -3.3° with respect to the blade exit angle. Similarly, discrete jets were also placed on the suction surface at 95.5% chord aimed at 15° with respect to the local blade surface. This configuration is referred to as the suction surface jet (SSJ). The discrete jets for both configurations were designed to be choked while injecting a mass flow rate of 1.00% of the fan through-flow. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to model new configurations and study subsequent changes in total pressure deficit using a blade design inlet Mach number of 0.73, Reynolds number based on chord length of 1.67 à 106, and design incidence angle of 0°. Experimental testing was later conducted in a 2D cascade tunnel. The TEJ and SSJ were tested at design blowing of 1.00% and at off-design conditions of 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1.25% fan through-flow. Results between the different flow control configurations were compared using a blowing coefficient. CFD showed the TEJ and SSJ offered aerodynamic improvement over the Slot configuration. Testing showed the SSJ outperformed the TEJ, as validated in CFD, producing wider and shallower wakes. SSJ area-averaged pressure losses were 25% less than TEJ at design. Noise predictions based on CFD findings showed that both TEJ and SSJ provided additional tonal sound power level attenuation over the Slot configuration at similar blowing coefficients, with the SSJ providing the most attenuation. Noise prediction based on experimental results concurred that the SSJ provided more total attenuation than the TEJ. Experimental results showed that the SSJ performed better aerodynamically and, based on analytical prediction, provided 2 dB more total attenuation than the TEJ. Master of Science

Gas turbine blades are subject to harsh operating conditions that require innovative cooling techniques to insure reliable operation of parts. Film-cooling and internal cooling techniques can prolong blade life and allow for higher engine temperatures. This study examines several unique methods of cooling the turbine blade tip. The first method employs holes placed directly in the tip which inject coolant onto the blade tip. The second and third methods used holes placed on the pressure side of a blade near the tip representative of two different manufacturing techniques. The fourth method is a novel cooling technique called a microcircuit, which combines internal convection and injection from the pressure side near a turbine blade tip. Wind tunnel tests are used to observe how effectively these designs cool the tip through adiabatic effectiveness measurements and convective heat transfer measurements. Tip gap size and blowing ratio are varied for the different tip cooling configurations. Results from these studies show that coolant injection from either the tip surface or from the pressure side near the tip are viable cooling methods. All of these studies showed better cooling could be achieved at small tip gaps than large tip gaps. The results in which the two different manufacturing techniques were compared indicated that the technique producing more of a diffused hole provided better cooling on the tip. When comparing the thermal performance of all the cooling schemes investigated, the added benefit of the internal convective cooling shows that the microcircuit outperforms the other designs. A numerical case study of a multistage compressor with relative supersonic rotors is presented. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the flow instability mechanism of the UEET compressor and its relation to the rotor shock structure in the relative velocity reference frame. The computational study was conducted with the NASA code ADPAC , utilizing the mixing-plane assumption for the boundary condition between adjacent, relatively-rotating blade rows. A steady, five-blade-row, numerical simulation using the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was performed, creating several constant speed lines. The results are presented, highlighting the role shock structure plays in the stability of the compressor. The shock structure in the downstream rotor isolates the upstream rotor from the exit conditions until the shock detaches from the leading edge. At this point the shock structure in the upstream rotor moves, changing the conditions for the downstream rotor. This continues with increasing pressure at the exit until the shock in the upstream rotor detaches from the leading edge. This event causes an instantaneous drop in the mass flow rate, initiating positive incident separation on the suction side of stator-two. Master of Science

A stator cascade was developed to simulate the flow conditions within a close-stage-spacing transonic axial compressor. Experiments were conducted in a linear transonic blowdown cascade wind tunnel with an inlet Mach number of 0.65. The bow shock from the downstream rotor was simulated by a single moving normal shock generated with a shock tube. First, steady pressure data were gathered to ensure that the stator cascade operated properly without the presence of the shock. Next, the effects of the passing shock on the stator flow field were investigated using shadowgraph photography and Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV). Measurements were taken for three different shock strengths. In every case studied, a vortex formed near the stator trailing edge as the shock impacted the blade. The size of this vortex was shown to be directly related to the shock strength, and the vortex remained present in the trailing edge flow field throughout the cycle duration. Analysis of the DPIV data showed that the vortex acts as a flow blockage, with the extent of this blockage ranging from 2.9% of the passage for the weakest shock, to 14.3% of the passage for the strongest shock. The vortex was also shown to cause flow deviation up to 75° for the case with the strongest shock. Further analysis estimated that the total pressure losses due to shock-induced vorticity ranged from 46% to 113% of the steady wake losses. Finally, the total pressure loss purely due to the upstream-propagating normal shock was estimated to be roughly 0.22%. Master of Science

This thesis reports the results of a study of the starting conditions of a turbofan engine. The research focused on ways to minimize turbine inlet temperature while maintaining an adequate compressor stall margin during engine start by varying the surge valve bleed. Varying the surge valve bleed was also shown to reduce compressor and fan required torque. A new method of turbofan engine component characteristic map extrapolation was developed. This novel method uses incompressible similarity laws, but compressibility effects of the flow are reflected by changing the exponent used in the similarity laws. These extrapolated component characteristic maps were tested in a simulation of the turbofan engine by stepping engine speed from close to ignition speed to idle speed. The simulation predictions were verified by comparing them to experimental engine performance data. Lastly, a parametric study of starting surge valve flow area schedule was performed to reduce turbine temperatures while maintaining adequate stall margin. Minimizing turbine inlet temperatures during start-up when turbine components are cold will minimize thermal shock and thereby extend turbine component life. Master of Science

The effects of grid generated free-stream turbulence on compressor cascade performance was measured experimentally in the Virginia Tech blow-down wind tunnel. The parameter of key interest was the behavior of the measured total pressure loss coefficient with and without generated free-stream turbulence. A staggered cascade of nine airfoils was tested at a range of Mach numbers between 0.59 and 0.88. The airfoils were tested at both the lowest loss level cascade angle and extreme positive and negative cascade angles about this condition. The cascade was tested in a Reynolds number range based on the chord length of approximately 1.2-2x106. A passive turbulent grid was used as the turbulence-generating device, it produced a turbulent intensity of approximately 1.6%. The total pressure loss coefficient was reduced by 11-56% at both the "lowest loss level" and more positive cascade angles for both high and low Mach numbers. Oil Visualization and blade static pressure measurements were performed in order to gain a qualitative understanding of the loss reduction mechanism. The results indicate that the effectiveness of an increasing turbulent free-stream on loss reduction, at transonic Mach numbers, depends on whether the shock wave on the suction surface is strong enough to completely separate the boundary layer. At negative cascade angles, increasing free-stream turbulence proved to have a negligible influence on the pressure loss coefficient. At cascade angles where transition exists within a laminar separation bubble, increasing free-stream turbulence suppressed the extent of the laminar separation bubble and led to an earlier turbulent reattachment. A high-turning compressor stator with a unique flow control design was developed and tested. Both boundary layer suction and trailing edge blowing developed from a single supplied motive pressure source are employed on the stator. Massflow removed through boundary layer suction is added to the motive massflow, and the resulting combined flow is used for trailing edge blowing to reduce the total pressure deficit generated by the stator wake. The effectiveness of the flow control design was investigated experimentally by measuring the reduction in the total pressure loss coefficient. The experiment was conducted in a linear transonic blowdown cascade wind tunnel. The inlet Mach number for all tests was 0.79, with a Reynolds number based on stator chordlength of 2,000,000. A range of inlet cascade angles was tested to identify the useful range of the flow control design. The effect of different supply massflows represented as a percentage of the passage throughflow was also documented. Significant reductions in the total pressure loss coefficient were accomplished with flow control at low cascade angles. A maximum reduction of 65% in the baseline (no flow control) loss coefficient was achieved by using a motive massflow of 1.6% of the passage throughflow, at cascade angle of 0°. The corresponding suction and blowing massflow ratio was approximately 1:3.6. Cascade angle results near 0° showed significant reductions in the loss coefficient, while increases in the cascade angle diminished the effects of flow control. Considerable suction side separation and the presence of a leading edge shock are noticeable as the cascade angle is increased, and contribute to the losses across the stator surface. Also identified was the estimated increase in wake turning due to flow control of up to 4.5°. Master of Science

An aerodynamic investigation was performed to assess the effectiveness of combined boundary layer suction and trailing edge blowing at reducing the blade profile losses and the wake momentum deficit of a cascade of tandem IGV's operating at realistic flow conditions. Two trailing edge blowing designs were tested: metal-angle blowing, which oriented the blowing jets very near to the blade exit angle, and deviation-angle blowing, which oriented the blowing jets at a significant deviation angle from the blade exit angle. Both blowing designs used the same boundary layer suction arrangement. A linear cascade of five IGV's was tested with a flap deflection angle of 40 degrees and an inlet Mach number of 0.3. The Reynolds number based on the overall IGV chord length for these experiments was greater than 500,000. The inlet and exit angles of the IGV at this flap setting were 0 degrees and 55 degrees, respectively. Tests performed with no flow control showed significant suction surface flow separation that generated large wakes with high losses and large momentum deficits. The application of boundary layer suction reduced the baseline pressure loss coefficient and wake momentum thickness by 22%. A suction mass flow of 0.4% of the passage flow was used to obtain these results. The addition of metal-angle blowing with the suction resulted in total reductions of 48% and 38% for the pressure loss coefficient and wake momentum thickness. A blowing mass flow of 3.1% of the passage flow was used in addition to 0.4% suction mass flow to obtain these results. The application of the deviation-angle blowing was detrimental to the aerodynamics of the IGV, as both the pressure loss coefficient and wake momentum thickness increased slightly over their suction-only values. This was attributed to a manufacturing defect which distorted the flow of the blowing jet. The results of the deviation-angle blowing experiments were not considered representative of the design intent and reinforced the importance of the hole design for creating a proper blowing jet. While low speed tests of this cascade showed results and trends very similar to those of previous research, the application of flow control proved to be less effective at higher speeds due to the generation of significantly larger wakes. This research performs an experimental study of a trailing edge blowing system that can adapt to variations in flow parameters and reduce the unsteady stator-rotor interaction at all engine operating conditions. The fan rotor of a 1/14 scale turbofan propulsion simulator is subjected to spatially periodic, circumferential inlet flow distortions. The distortions are generated by four struts that support a centerbody in the inlet mounted onto the simulator. To reduce the unsteady effects of the strut wakes on the rotor blades, the wake is re-energized by injecting mass from the trailing edge of the strut. Each strut is provided with discrete blowing holes that open out through the strut trailing edge. Each blowing hole is connected to a MEMS based microvalve, which controls the blowing rate of the hole. The microvalve is actuated by a signal voltage, generated by a PID controller that accepts free stream and wake axial flow velocities as inputs and minimizes their difference. To quantify the effectiveness of trailing edge blowing the far-field noise is measured in an anechoic chamber. The experiments are performed for two simulator test speeds, 29,500 rpm and 40,000 rpm, with and without trailing edge blowing. The maximum reduction recorded at 29,500 rpm is 8.2 dB, and at 40,000 rpm is 7.3 dB. Reductions of 2.9 dB and greater are observed at the first five harmonics of the blade passing frequency. The sound power level at the blade passing frequency, calculated from measured far-field directivity, is reduced by 4.4 dB at 29,500 rpm and by 2.9 dB at 40,000 rpm. The feasibility and advantage of active control is demonstrated by the ability of the system to respond to a step change in the inlet flow velocity, and achieve optimum wake filling in approximately 8 seconds. An experimental investigation of the wake of a low-speed axial-flow compressor rotor was conducted with and without the presence of steady inlet total pressure distortions. The steady three-dimensional rotor inlet flow was obtained by a five-hole pneumatic pressure probe, while the one-dimensional rotor exit data were obtained using a piggyback steady/unsteady total pressure probe in non-nulling mode. Both inlet and exit flow conditions were measured in the stationary frame of reference. Results indicate increases in wake thickness and magnitude of total pressure defect as blade loading increased into the distortion cycle. The wake suction side jet increased in width and magnitude as blade loading increased, which appears to be a response to flow blockage caused by the growing boundary layer on the blades. Based on one-dimensional exit total pressure conditions with respect to the distortion screen, the dynamic response of the intra-blade passage flow does not appear to be a function of blade loading, measurement span, or distortion intensity within the ranges tested. Unsteady one-dimensional rotor exit suction side jet width and magnitude varied a great deal within and outside of the distorted region, and were only moderately correlated to inlet flow conditions. Changes in the unsteady one-dimensional rotor wake width and magnitude were usually in phase with and strongly correlated to changes in the inlet flow conditions. Master of Science

A stator apparatus for mounting upstream of an intake to a rotating machine which blows pressurized air, or other media, from discharge orifices at a pressure and velocity to minimize velocity defects or turbulence in the wake of the stator prior to the plane of rotation of a rotating member of the machine. The rotating member then encounters a substantially uniform velocity medium at the plane of incidence, which substantially reduces uneven loading on the rotating member, thereby reducing noise and reducing high-cycle failure of that rotating element. The distribution and size of the orifices is determinable by placing the stator apparatus in a wind tunnel, or on the intake of a apparatus simulating the intake of the rotating machine, measuring the turbulence or velocity defects in the stator wake, and modifying the distribution and size of the orifices until the turbulence is minimized.

Acoustic experiments were conducted in an anechoic chamber with a 1/14th scale model of a supersonic aircraft engine inlet using Trailing Edge Blowing (TEB) to reduce the engine fan noise from a turbofan propulsion simulator (TPS). The TPS is 4.1 in. (10.4 cm) in diameter and is powered by compressed air. The supersonic inlet is connected to the TPS and is geometrically and acoustically scaled from a working design. The supersonic inlet is operated in a takeoff or landing operating condition where the inlet core flow is subsonic. TEB is the process of ejecting high pressure air to re-energize the wakes of upstream fan disturbances such as struts or inlet guide vanes (IGV). The elimination of the wakes will provide a uniform flow field at the engine fan face and reduce noise at the blade passing frequency. The TEB was implemented on six non-uniformly spaced support struts in the inlet. Acoustic tests were then performed at 40%, 60% and 88% of the fan design speed (PNC) to measure the reduction in the blade passing tone (BPT) due to TEB from the struts with and without the presence of IGV. The noise reductions without IGV at 40 PNC show the best results with the blade passing tone (BPT) being reduced by an average of 3.1 dB. The first harmonic of the BPT and the overall Sound Pressure Level (SPL) were also reduced by 1 dB. The addition of the IGV in the inlet reduced the effectiveness of the TEB. The addition of IGV changed the reduction in BPT at 40 PNC by 0.5 dB and the overall SPL was unchanged. At 60 PNC the addition of IGV reduced the reduction due to TEB in the BPT from an average of 2 dB to an average of 1 dB. The tests performed at 88 PNC showed negligible effects due to TEB. Aerodynamic experiments performed on the inlet that showed that the wakes of the IGV have a larger velocity defect than the struts, thus making the IGV a greater noise source. Master of Science

A numerical investigation of the performance of two candidate designs for injection into supersonic flow, including a comparison of two renormalized group theory (RNG) based k-epsilon turbulence models with a more conventional k-epsilon model. The chosen designs were an unswept ramp injector with four injection ports and a novel nine-hole injector array. The objectives of the investigation were to provide reliable computational solutions to the flowfields in question using both RNG and standard k-epsilon turbulence models and to compare the solutions to experiment, thereby to judge the relative performance of the turbulence models. A second objective of the investigation was to use the computed data to provide design insights for the nine-hole injector array. This investigation made use of GASP(tm) version 2.2, a commercial computational fluid dynamics code that was augmented by the addition of one RNG-based k-epsilon turbulence model derived by Zhou, et. al. and one variant of Zhou's model, which was derived by the author. Mesh sequencing studies were performed to measure solution quality, with the fine mesh for the injector array containing roughly one million grid nodes and the fine mesh for the ramp injector containing more than six million grid nodes. Results of these studies indicated that the injector-array solution was significantly under-resolved in the farfield, though the quality was better in the vicinity of the injector itself. The ramp-injector solution, while not perfectly grid-resolved, showed much better grid convergence in both the nearfield and farfield. Accordingly, comparison with experiment was better for the ramp injector than for the injector array. For both injectors, the differences between solutions generated with RNG-based k-epsilon and standard k-epsilon turbulence models were negligibly small." Despite inadequate grid resolution in the farfield, the computational investigation of the nine-hole injector array did yield several important design insights. Particularly, the significance to mixing and losses of the placement of the outer injectors of the second and third rows was determined. Ph. D.

Incipient motion criterion in sediment transport is very important, as it defines the flow condition that initiates sediment motion, and is also frequently employed in models to predict the sediment transport at higher flow conditions as well. In turbulent flows, even a reasonably accurate definition of incipient motion condition becomes very difficult due to the random nature of the turbulent process, which is responsible for sediment motion under incipient conditions. This work investigates two aspects, both of which apply to incipient sediment transport conditions. The first one deals with the role of turbulence in initiating sediment motion. The second part deals with the nature of sediment-fluid interaction for more general and complex flows where the number of sediment particles that form the rough surface is varied. The first part of this work that investigates the role of turbulence in initiating sediment motion, uses a video camera to simultaneously monitor and record the sediment (glass ball) motion and corresponding fluid velocity events measured by a three-component laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV). The results of the single ball experiment revealed that the number of LDV flow measurements increase dramatically (more than four folds) just prior to the ball motion. The fluid mean velocity and its root-mean-square (rms) values also are significantly higher than the values that correspond to the flow conditions that yield no ball motion. The second part of the work, investigation of the fluid-sediment interaction, includes five tests with varying number of sediment particles. In order to understand the nature and extent of fluid-solid interaction, velocity profile measurements using the 3-D laser system were carried out at three locations for each of these five cases. Plots of mean velocities, rms quantities located the universal layer at about 1.5 ball diameters above the porous bed. However, at higher sediment particle concentrations, this distance reduced and the beginning of the universal layer approached the top of the porous bed. Ph. D.

The first two steps in the development of an integrated multidisciplinary design optimization procedure capable of analyzing the nonlinear fluid flow about geometrically complex aeroelastic configurations have been accomplished in the present work. For the first step, a three-dimensional unstructured grid approach to aerodynamic shape sensitivity analysis and design optimization has been developed. The advantage of unstructured grids, when compared with a structured-grid approach, is their inherent ability to discretize irregularly shaped domains with greater efficiency and less effort. Hence, this approach is ideally suited fro geometrically complex configurations of practical interest. In this work the time-dependent, nonlinear Euler equations are solved using an upwind, cell-centered, finite-volume scheme. The discrete, linearized systems which result from this scheme are solved iteratively by a preconditioned conjugate-gradient-like algorithm known as GMRES for the two-dimensional cases and a Gauss-Seidel algorithm for the three-dimensional; at steady-state, similar procedures are used to solve the accompanying linear aerodynamic sensitivity equations in incremental iterative form. As shown, this particular form of the sensitivity equation makes large-scale gradient-based aerodynamic optimization possible by taking advantage of memory efficient methods to construct exact Jacobian matrix-vector products. Various surface parameterization techniques have been employed in the current study to control the shape of the design surface. Once this surface has been deformed, the interior volume of the unstructured grid is adapted by considering the mesh as a system of interconnected tension springs. Grid sensitivities are obtained by differentiating the surface parameterization and the grid adaptation algorithms with ADIFOR, an advanced automatic-differentiation software tool. To demonstrate the ability of this procedure to analyze and design complex configurations of practical interest, the sensitivity analysis and shape optimization has been performed for several two- and three-dimensional cases. In two-dimensions, an initially symmetric NACA-0012 airfoil and a high-lift multi-element airfoil were examined. For the three-dimensional configurations, an initially rectangular wing with uniform NACA-0012 cross-sections was optimized; in additions, a complete Boeing 747-200 aircraft was studied. Furthermore, the current study also examines the effect of inconsistency in the order of spatial accuracy between the nonlinear fluid and linear shape sensitivity equations. The second step was to develop a computationally efficient, high-fidelity, integrated static aeroelastic analysis procedure. To accomplish this, a structural analysis code was coupled with the aforementioned unstructured grid aerodynamic analysis solver. The use of an unstructured grid scheme for the aerodynamic analysis enhances the interactions compatibility with the wing structure. The structural analysis utilizes finite elements to model the wing so that accurate structural deflections may be obtained. In the current work, parameters have been introduced to control the interaction of the computational fluid dynamics and structural analyses; these control parameters permit extremely efficient static aeroelastic computations. To demonstrate and evaluate this procedure, static aeroelastic analysis results for a flexible wing in low subsonic, high subsonic (subcritical), transonic (supercritical), and supersonic flow conditions are presented. An experiment was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic losses of two high-pressure steam turbine nozzles (526A, 525B) subjected to a large range of incident angle and exit Mach number. The blades were tested in a 2D transonic windtunnel. The exit Mach number ranged from 0.60 to 1.15 and the incidence was varied from -34o to 35o. Measurements included downstream Pitot probe traverses, upstream total pressure, and endwall static pressures. Flow visualization techniques such as shadowgraph photography and color oil flow visualization were performed to complement the measured data. When the exit Mach number for both nozzles increased from 0.9 to 1.1, the total pressure loss coefficient increased by a factor of 7 as compared to the total pressure losses observed at subsonic condition (M2

An experimental investigation into the effects of inlet temperature transients on the stall and stall recovery aerodynamics of a low speed multi-stage axial flow compressor has been presented. Experiments were conducted on a low speed multi-stage axial flow compression system to demonstrate how a compressor dynamically stalls or recovers from a rotating stall operating condition during an inlet temperature transient. The specific effects of the inlet temperature transients on the compressor rotor blade flow physics during the dynamic stall or rotating stall recovery events of the axial flow compression system have been presented. In one experiment, a full recovery from a rotating stall operating condition was successfully accomplished on the low speed multistage axial flow compressor. Explanations for the axial flow compression system dynamic stall and rotating stall recovery processes during inlet temperature transients have been presented. The method utilized for inducing the rotating stall recovery on the compression system has been proposed as a possible new technique for active recovery from rotating stall for single and multi-stage axial flow compression systems. An aeroacoustic investigation was performed to assess the effects of adding mass flow at the trailing edges of four stators upstream of an aircraft engine simulator. By using trailing edge blowing to minimize the shed wakes of the stators, the flow into the rotor was made more uniform. In these experiments a reduced number of stators (four) was used in a 1/14 scale model inlet which was coupled to a 4.1 in (10.4 cm) turbofan engine simulator with 18 rotors and 26 downstream stators. This study is a preliminary step toward a more in depth investigation of using trailing edge blowing to reduce unsteady rotor-stator interaction. Steady-state measurements of the aerodynamic flow field and acoustic far field were made in order to evaluate the aeroacoustic performance at three simulator speeds: 40%, 60%, and 88% of the design speed. The lowest test speed of 40% design speed showed the most dramatic reduction in radiated noise. Noise reductions as large as 8.9 dB in the blade passing tone were recorded at 40% design speed, while a tone reduction of 5.5 dB was recorded at 60% design speed. At 88% design speed a maximum tone reduction of 2.6 dB was recorded. In addition, trailing edge blowing reduced the overall sound pressure level in every case. For both the 40% design speed and the 60% design speed, the fan face distortion was significantly reduced due to the trailing edge blowing. The addition of trailing edge blowing from the four upstream stators did not change the total pressure ratio, and the mass flow added by the blowing was approximately 1%. The results of these experiments clearly demonstrate that blowing from the trailing edges of the stators is effective in reducing unsteady rotor-stator interaction and the subsequent forward radiated noise. The inlet buzz phenomenon was investigated experimentally and analytically. An external-compression axisymmetric inlet model, having 74 mm in cowl lip diameter, was tested in the 229x229 sq mm blowdown wind tunnel at Mach 2.4. The test facility has shown potential for the supersonic inlet research. The occurrence of inlet buzz was indicated by the continuous shock oscillation and the static pressure fluctuation. The hypothesis based on internal pressure measurement and shadowgraph pictures during stable operations revealed the substantial influence of the separated flow inside the model. Possible increase in subsonic Mach number at the inlet entrance with decreasing exit throttle area, which could promote an instability, was suggested. A basic theoretical shock-plenum system was developed to simulate the inlet buzz behavior and identify its controlling mechanisms. This nonlinear model was governed by the non-stationary shock wave relation, the plenum chamber mass balance, and the entrance blocking effect, as introduced by the vortex sheet theory. The sustained oscillatory cycle of the resulting solution suggested a possible explanation of the phenomenon by combination of the vortex sheet theory concept and the resonance analysis. A computational study was performed on a vaned radial diffuser using the MEFP (The Moore Elliptic Flow Program) flow code. The vaned diffuser studied by Dalbert et al. was chosen as a test case for this thesis. The geometry and inlet conditions were established from this study. The performance of the computational diffuser was compared to the test case diffuser. The CFD analysis was able to demonstrate the 3D flow within the diffuser. An inlet conditions analysis was performed to establish the boundary conditions at the diffuser inlet. The given inlet flow angles were reduced in order to match the specified mass flow rate. The inlet static pressure was held constant over the height of the diffuser. The diffuser was broken down into its subcomponents to study the effects of each component on the overall performance of the diffuser. The diffuser inlet region, which comprises the vaneless and semi-vaneless spaces, contains the greatest losses, 56%, but the highest static pressure rise, 54%. The performance at the throat was also evaluated and the blockage and pressure recovery were calculated. The results show the static pressure comparison for the computational study and the test case. The overall pressure rise of the computational study was in good agreement with the measured pressure rise. The static pressure and total pressure loss distributions in the inlet region, at the throat, and in the exit region of the diffuser were also analyzed. The flow development was presented for the entire diffuser. The 3D flow calculations were able to illustrate a leading edge recirculation at the hub, caused by an inlet skew and high losses at the hub, and the secondary flows in the diffuser convected the high losses. The study presented in this thesis demonstrated the flow development in a vaned diffuser and its subcomponents. The performance was evaluated by calculating the static pressure rise, total pressure losses, and throat blockage. It also demonstrated current CFD capabilities for diffusers using steady 3D flow analysis. Master of Science

An internal, 3-D, viscous numerical flow simulation was performed on the rectangular-to-circular transition, bifurcated, 2D high speed civil transport engine inlet at takeoff. The objective of the study was to obtain the causes of flow distortion at the inlet fan face. The inlet was modeled with the centerbody in the fully collapsed takeoff position. A single block, 14Ox40x40 Polar grid topology of a 1/4 symmetry volume of the inlet was used in the simulation. The calculation employed the well established, robust PARC3D CFD code, which uses the full three-dimensional, Reynolds averaged, Navier-Stokes equations in strong conservation form. The flow was considered to be turbulent over the entire flow region. The turbulence model incorporated into PARC3D is the algebraic Baldwin Lomax model. Limitations existed in the local region where the flow interacts with the nose cone due to the inherent limitations of the turbulence model. The results showed that the flow throughout the inlet was well behaved. The turbulent boundary layers were thin and stayed attached to the surfaces of the inlet throughout the entire flowfield. A high pressure recovery was observed at the fan face. Radial distortion at the fan face was caused by thin boundary layers on the nose cone and cowl surfaces. Circumferential distortion was caused by pressure gradients produced by the wake of the splitter plate, located just upstream of the fan. Master of Science

A more robust method for solving the governing equations of a one-dimensional stage-by-stage dynamic compression system model was developed and validated. The improved method was then applied to two-dimensional post-stall models. The improvement in robustness was achieved by modeling the governing equations with upwind differencing and use of implicit time integration. A special form of upwind flux, flux difference splitting with source term treatment, FDSS, was developed for the model. A two-dimensional axisymmetric model was developed to allow post-stall modeling of split flowpath systems such as turbofans. This model was an entirely new concept. Additionally, a two-dimensional axial-circumferential model of rotating stall cell development and propagation was developed based on previous work. All of the models developed applied upwind differencing techniques to improve upon central-difference methods. Ph. D.

A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic and acoustic performance of a supersonic inlet with a modified auxiliary door geometry. A 1/14 scale model of an axisymmetric, mixed-compression, supersonic inlet designed for civil transportation was used in conjunction with a 10.4cm (4.1 in.) turbofan engine simulator to test a new inlet door geometry designed to reduce flow distortion and noise radiation. The new door geometry uses door passages with increased circumferential span to improve the distribution of the flow entering through the doors. In addition, the new design employs sonic flow velocity at the inlet throat and a converging flow passage in the auxiliary doors to attenuate propagating fan noise through the choking effect. To provide a basis for comparison, a baseline door geometry representative of current designs was also tested. The experiments were conducted at simulated aircraft takeoff engine speeds under static conditions. Steady-state measurements of the inlet flow field were made along with far field acoustic measurements of the fan noise. The results show the new door geometry is successful in reducing circumferential flow distortion at the fan entrance by a factor of 2.3 compared to the baseline configuration. In addition, far field radiation of the blade passing frequency tone and overall noise is reduced by an average of 4dB(SPL) in the forward and aft sectors (0° to 110° from the inlet axis). As a compromise for the distortion and acoustic improvements, the overall inlet total pressure recovery is reduced by approximately 2% with the new auxiliary doors. Master of Science

The results of a test program incorporating a dual hot wire aspirating probe to radially survey the by-pass duct downstream of an axial flow fan stage are presented. The probe measures time resolved total temperature and total pressure from which isentropic efficiency is calculated. The objective was to provide time resolved data to further the understanding of the flow and aid in determining the source of high losses located near the rotor tip. A technique for quantifying randomness of an unsteady flow is developed, and the randomness of the surveyed flow is shown to correlate with the losses. A new method of ensemble averaging instantaneous data is presented which produces an identifiable blade passage profile even in a random flowfield where traditional techniques often fail. Time averages of the aspirating probe data are shown to agree with conventional steady-state measurements within the experimental uncertainties. Unsteady features seen in the data are compared to similar features noted in the literature, and contour plots of the ensemble averaged data and unsteady fluctuations are presented. A critical evaluation of the Baldwin-lomax (Bl) turbulence model for shock/shear layer interactions, reversed flow, and curved, asymmetric wakes is made. No general definition for reference line is available for wakes, and difficulties exist for length scale prediction in complex flows. An entropy envelope for shear layers, and the locus of maximum entropy to define the wake centerline is proposed. The range of the Bl model is limited to the entropy envelope. This provides all relevant modeling data, and allows general application of existing reversed flow corrections. The total enhancements are flow adaptive and form the Dynamic Bl model. This robust model is more accurate in complex boundary layers and wakes. The Dynamic Bl model is applied to a supersonic fan cascade at the design incidence. Sharp differences in turbulent viscosities were seen between the the original, Baseline Bl, and Dynamic Bl models. Only slight differences exist in the overall cascade solutions. This includes loss factors which were produced by different mechanisms. The Baseline BL model predicted separation on the SS surface and larger standing vorticies off the TE. The Dynamic Bl model predicted attached boundary layers, smaller standing vorticies off the TE, but uniformly higher skin friction. The shock structure in the cascade may reduce the flow field dependence on specific viscosity profile characteristics, so these may be less important than overall turbulence levels. Master of Science
