We are developing a phase-modulating micro mirror-array spatial light modulator to be used for real holography within the EU-funded project REALHOLO, featuring millions of pixels that can be individually positioned in a piston mode at a large frame rate. We found earlier that an electrostatic comb-drive array offers the best performance for the actuators: sufficient yoke forces for fast switching even at low voltages compatible with the CMOS addressing backplane. In our first design, the well-known electrostatic cross-talk issue had already been much smaller than would have been possible for parallel-plate actuators, but it was still larger than the precision requirements for high-image-quality holography. In this paper, we report on our analysis of the crucial regions for the electrostatic cross-talk and ways to reduce it while observing manufacturing constraints as well as avoiding excessively high field strengths that might lead to electrical breakdown. Finally, we present a solution that, in FEM simulations, reduces the remaining cross-talk to well below the required specification limit. This solution can be manufactured without any additional processing steps and suffers only a very small reduction of the yoke forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Imagery rescripting (ImRs) is a psychotherapeutic intervention targeting aversive memories. During the three-phase intervention, patients reexperience their aversive memory (phase 1), observe the scene from their adult perspective, and intervene to help their former selves (phase 2), and reexperience it again with the positive changes (phase 3). Previous studies have rarely investigated emotional and regulatory processes taking place during the intervention. Objective: This randomized controlled trial investigated self-reported affective and physiological responses during ImRs. Methods: Seventy-seven patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) were randomly assigned to a single session of ImRs or a control intervention (recall and discussion of the memory) targeting an aversive social memory. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were assessed during and post hoc ratings of positive and negative feelings after baseline and the intervention phases. Results: Relative to the control intervention, ImRs resulted in an initial increase in negative feelings from baseline to phase 1 and a following larger (phase 1 to phase 2) and more stable (phase 2 to phase 3) decrease in negative feelings/increase in positive feelings. On the physiological level, during ImRs compared to the control intervention, mean HR was significantly higher during phase 1 and HRV during phase 3, each compared to baseline. Conclusions: These results provide further information about the specific sequence of emotional responses on different response levels during ImRs, being consistent with known theories of emotional processing and supposed mechanisms of ImRs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a year of cultivation and three agronomic measures (pre-crop, soil tillage, application of fungicides) on the yield of winter wheat grown in the crop rotation without the livestock production. The results from the years 2011-2017, except for the year 2012, from the Žabčice Field Experimental Station (49°01'20''N, 16°37'55''E) were evaluated. The soil texture is clay loam soil and the soil type is fluvisol. In the field trial, winter wheat was grown after two pre-crops (winter wheat, pea). Two soil tillage technologies, namely the conventional tillage - CT (ploughing - at a depth of 24 cm) and the minimum tillage - MT (shallow loosening - at a depth of 15 cm) were used. Two fungicide treatments against leaf and spikelet diseases were used, and they were compared to the non-treated variants. The obtained results showed that the grain yield of winter wheat was statistically influenced not only by a year of cultivation, but also by the pre-crop, the application of fungicides, and mostly by the interaction of these factors with the soil tillage. The importance of pea as a suitable pre-crop for winter wheat was confirmed as the grain yield was higher compared to winter wheat as a pre-crop by an average of 0.49 t/ha. It was also found that the MT is a more appropriate technology than the CT, on average by 0.12 t/ha over the six years. The importance of fungicide treatment was also confirmed, where the grain yield of winter wheat was higher by 0.26 t/ha compared to the non-treated variant. The presented results brought a new knowledge for winter wheat management practice in dry conditions.

Grazing livestock on commonly managed pastures is a widespread practice in post-socialist countries such as Azerbaijan and Georgia. Despite the value of livestock as an important income source for rural households, commonly managed pastures frequently show signs of degradation, pointing to shortcomings in the joint management of common pool resources in those countries. Among other factors, the success of common management crucially depends on the cooperation and self-organization capacity of stakeholders. Especially in post-socialist countries, their capacity and willingness to cooperate in natural resource management is said to be low due to previous experiences of forced cooperation during the socialist period. In this paper, we investigate stakeholders’ capacity to cooperate in natural resource management in two post-socialist countries drawing on a framed field experiment for common pasture use. The analysis of group and individual participant performances show that groups are indeed capable of managing experimental pastures sustainably, especially if participants have the possibility to communicate which, in addition, is positively affecting cooperation. However, we find significant differences in participant performances and decisions between both countries, pointing to differing experiences with real-world pasture scarcity, common pasture management, as well as to differences in social capital endowment and cultural context factors.

Endoscopic optical coherence tomography is a non-invasive and contactless imaging technique based on white light interferometry. It enables high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of scattering tissue up to a depth of about 2 mm. In addition, Doppler-OCT can detect sub-resolution movements. These features can be used to examine the tympanic membrane, the surrounding tissue and nearby areas of the tympanic cavity. For this purpose, we present an endoscopic OCT system, which provides access to the tympanic membrane. The design of the endoscope is based on a gradientindex (GRIN) lens system. This allows a broad field of view and a large working distance. An additional VIS beam path allows visual imaging and orientation inside the auditory canal. Therefore, illumination fibers are attached a round the GRIN-system. The resulting endoscope has a length of 55 mm and a diameter of 3.5 mm. By attaching an earphone and a probe microphone, the oscillation of the tympanic membrane can be measured under acoustic stimulation. With the endoscopic OCT system, we provide an examination tool for the diagnosis of a broad number of diseases like conductive hearing loss.

Global challenges related to land, biodiversity, food and climate interact in diverse ways depending on local conditions and the broader context in which they are embedded. This diversity challenges learning and integrated decision-making to sustainably transform the nexus, that is to say the interactions between these land-based challenges. Providing aggregated insights, archetype analysis has revealed recurrent patterns within the multitude of interactions, i.e. interaction archetypes that are essential to enhance the understanding of nexus relations. This paper synthesises the state of knowledge on interaction or nexus archetypes related to land, biodiversity, food and climate based on a systematic literature review. It focusses on the coverage of thematic aspects, regional distribution, social dimensions and methodologies. The results show that consideration of comprehensive land–biodiversity–food–climate interactions is rare. Furthermore, there are pronounced regional knowledge gaps, social dimensions are inadequately captured, and methodological shortcomings are evident. To enhance the investigation of interaction archetypes, we have framed a future research agenda providing directions to fully capture interactions across space and time, better use the potential of scenario archetypes and up-scale transformative actions. These advances will constructively contribute insights that help to achieve the ambitious objective to sustainably transform the nexus between land, biodiversity, food and climate.

Archetype analysis is a promising approach in sustainability science to identify patterns and explain mechanisms shaping the sustainability of social-ecological systems. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to developing quality standards and methodological advances for archetype analysis, archetype validation remains a major challenge. Drawing on the insights from two international workshops on archetype analysis and on broader literature on validity, we propose a framework that identifies and describes six dimensions of validity: conceptual; construct; internal; external; empirical; and application validity. We first discuss the six dimensions in relation to different methodological approaches and purposes of archetype analysis. We then present an operational use of the framework for researchers to assess the validity of archetype analysis and to support sound archetype identification and policy-relevant applications. Finally, we apply our assessment to 18 published archetype analyses, which we use to describe the challenges and insights in validating the different dimensions and suggest ways to holistically improve the validity of identified archetypes. With this, we contribute to more rigorous archetype analyses, helping to develop the potential of the approach for guiding sustainability solutions.

Voters increasingly rely on social media for news and information about politics. But increasingly, social media has emerged as a fertile soil for deliberately produced misinformation campaigns, conspiracy, and extremist alternative media. How does the sourcing of political news and information define contemporary political communication in different countries in Europe? To understand what users are sharing in their political communication, we analyzed large volumes of political conversation over a major social media platform—in real-time and native languages during campaign periods—for three major European elections. Rather than chasing a definition of what has come to be known as “fake news,” we produce a grounded typology of what users actually shared and apply rigorous coding and content analysis to define the types of sources, compare them in context with known forms of political news and information, and contrast their circulation patterns in France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Based on this analysis, we offer a definition of “junk news” that refers to deliberately produced misleading, deceptive, and incorrect propaganda purporting to be real news. In the first multilingual, cross-national comparison of junk news sourcing and consumption over social media, we analyze over 4 million tweets from three elections and find that (1) users across Europe shared substantial amounts of junk news in varying qualities and quantities, (2) amplifier accounts drive low to medium levels of traffic and news sharing, and (3) Europeans still share large amounts of professionally produced information from media outlets, but other traditional sources of political information including political parties and government agencies are in decline.

This study assessed the impact of using soil tillage in maize crops on weed infestation intensity and weed species composition. A field experiment was established as a model example of livestock production management in drier climate conditions where maize was grown in seven-step crop rotation sequence: alfalfa – the first year, alfalfa – the second year, winter wheat, forage maize, winter wheat, sugar beet, and spring barley. Three soil tillage treatments were applied: conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT), and no-tillage (NT). An arithmetic method and multivariate analyses of ecological data were used. The highest weed infestation, mainly due to late spring species, was recorded in MT. Perennial and overwintering species were frequently observed in NT. Early spring weed species were abundant in CT. Different tillage treatments cause a significant change in the weed species spectrum in maize. A study of the relationship between tillage and the level of weed infestation requires long-term monitoring which will allow us to predict the intensity of weed infestation in particular locations.
