Abstract

Purpose: In the post-pandemic era urban ecosystem planning has become critically important. Given the emphasis on relevant issues concerning the complex interactions between human civilizations and natural systems within urban environments in the new normal, this article aims to enrich the field of knowledge management developing a cross-cultural analysis for clarifying the role of knowledge in planning and urban ecosystems. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is conceptual in nature. Based on a theoretical foundation built by a critical literature review and data from the China Statistical Yearbook and China’s National Bureau of Statistics, this paper introduces some emerging real-impact topics regarding the connections between humanistic knowledge and urban planning. A comparative analysis between the capital city of Chang’an in the Tang dynasty of China and the capital city of Athens in Ancient Greek was used for explaining the influence of knowledge on successful urban planning. Findings: The understanding the role of cross-cultural differences in knowledge management and practices for urban ecosystems offer the opportunities for rethinking consolidated approach to the interaction among social, economic, and environmental dimensions in urban settings. Originality/value: This paper implies a new inter-disciplinary research field of great interest for the real impact KM community by illuminating how knowledge management is central in urban planning and across cultures.

102. Pharmaconutrition: Which substrates?

Abstract

With the term “pharmaconutrition” or “immunonutrition” is intended the use of specific nutritional substrates having the ability of modulating specific mechanisms involved in several immune and inflammatory pathways. To achieve these goals, these substrates have to be administered with over physiologic dose. Glutamine and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, used as single substrate, did not show clear clinical advantages on solid endpoints such as postoperative complications. Despite several multiple substrate enteral feeds are available on the market, very few of them have been tested in randomized clinical trial to prove efficacy. The most extensive investigated formulation is a combination of arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, ribonucleic acid with or without glutamine. Several meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials have been conducted to compare the effects of enteral immunonutrition with control diets on post-surgical morbidity. The results consistently showed that the use of enteral multiple substrate formulas significantly reduced infectious complications and duration of hospitalization. In a more contemporary view, pharmaconutrition should be tested more accurately in the contest of enhanced recovery programs, during neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and in the prehabilitation setting.

Abstract

Background: The association between volume, complications and pathological outcomes is still under debate regarding colorectal cancer surgery. The aim of the study was to assess the association between centre volume and severe complications, mortality, less-than-radical oncologic surgery, and indications for neoadjuvant therapy. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 16,883 colorectal cancer cases from 80 centres (2018-2021). Outcomes: 30-day mortality; Clavien-Dindo grade >2 complications; removal of ≥ 12 lymph nodes; non-radical resection; neoadjuvant therapy. Quartiles of hospital volumes were classified as LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, and VERY HIGH. Independent predictors, both overall and for rectal cancer, were evaluated using logistic regression including age, gender, AJCC stage and cancer site. Results: LOW-volume centres reported a higher rate of severe postoperative complications (OR 1.50, 95% c.i. 1.15-1.096, P = 0.003). The rate of ≥ 12 lymph nodes removed in LOW-volume (OR 0.68, 95% c.i. 0.56-0.85, P < 0.001) and MEDIUM-volume (OR 0.72, 95% c.i. 0.62-0.83, P < 0.001) centres was lower than in VERY HIGH-volume centres. Of the 4676 rectal cancer patients, the rate of ≥ 12 lymph nodes removed was lower in LOW-volume than in VERY HIGH-volume centres (OR 0.57, 95% c.i. 0.41-0.80, P = 0.001). A lower rate of neoadjuvant chemoradiation was associated with HIGH (OR 0.66, 95% c.i. 0.56-0.77, P < 0.001), MEDIUM (OR 0.75, 95% c.i. 0.60-0.92, P = 0.006), and LOW (OR 0.70, 95% c.i. 0.52-0.94, P = 0.019) volume centres (vs. VERY HIGH). Conclusion: Colorectal cancer surgery in low-volume centres is at higher risk of suboptimal management, poor postoperative outcomes, and less-than-adequate oncologic resections. Centralisation of rectal cancer cases should be taken into consideration to optimise the outcomes.

Abstract

Although the quality of care during childbirth is a maternity service’s goal, less is known about the impact of the birth setting dimension on provision of care, defined as evidence-based intrapartum midwifery practices. This study’s aim was to investigate the impact of hospital birth volume (≥1000 vs. <1000 births/year) on intrapartum midwifery care and perinatal outcomes. We conducted a population-based cohort study on healthy pregnant women who gave birth between 2018 and 2022 in Lombardy, Italy. A total of 145,224 (41.14%) women were selected from nationally linked databases. To achieve the primary aim, log-binomial regression models were constructed. More than 70% of healthy pregnant women gave birth in hospitals (≥1000 births/year) where there was lower use of nonpharmacological coping strategies, higher likelihood of epidural analgesia, episiotomy, birth companion’s presence at birth, skin-to-skin contact, and first breastfeeding within 1 h (p-value < 0.001). Midwives attended almost all the births regardless of birth volume (98.80%), while gynecologists and pediatricians were more frequently present in smaller hospitals. There were no significant differences in perinatal outcomes. Our findings highlighted the impact of the birth setting dimension on the provision of care to healthy pregnant women.

Abstract

The adoption of blockchain technology is emerging as a promising approach in managing decentralized local energy markets (LEM). In this study we analyze the issues related to the deployment of a blockchain-based LEM on devices as much as possible similar to modern smart meters. The presented LEM is based on an automated market-making mechanism. Buying and selling prices are dynamically determined by the amount of energy consumed and produced within a local energy community. We implemented the market in a blockchain application based on the Cosmos framework, which was deployed on embedded devices in a test pilot consisting of 18 residential buildings in Southern Switzerland. The sustainability of the application was investigated by analyzing the resources required by the blockchain to operate. The obtained results show how the developed application uses a small part of the resources of the embedded devices, approximately 100 MB for the memory usage and about 4% as regards the CPU. Thus, while the application deployment on smart meters is still troublesome, especially for memory requirements, the deployment at the data concentrator level is reasonable and feasible. Finally, we propose possible improvements and extensions that can be implemented in future versions of the presented solution.

Abstract

A variedade de teorias sobre o nexo de causalidade evidencia a dificuldade de se estabelecer um conceito suficiente do instituto. O caráter ontológico da relação causal torna sua definição jurídica problemática, pois a natureza deontológica do Direito implica na inadequação do seu instrumental à caracterização daquela relação. A análise das principais teorias sobre o nexo de causalidade, entendidas como as mais comumente tratadas pela doutrina, permite visualizar a deficiência do tratamento jurídico dado ao instituto, sobretudo com a expansão das hipóteses de responsabilidade civil objetiva, nas quais a culpa não mais opera como elemento refratário de identificação do autor do dano. Por meio de pesquisa teórico-bibliográfica e jurisprudencial, expõe-se como a evolução da responsabilidade civil e o seu processo de objetivação, dispensando o elemento culpa enquanto limitador da cadeia de identificação do autor do dano, culmina na necessidade de se emprestar um conceito jurídico mais bem delimitado ao nexo causal, em razão da sua centralidade no regime de imputação. O caráter axiológico e teleológico das normas de responsabilidade civil acaba por trazer elementos estranhos ao instituto do nexo causal quando de sua conceituação, na tentativa de se atender ao senso de equidade. Admite-se, portanto, a verificação do elo causal mesmo quando incerto, contentando-se a imputação com a probabilidade ou até a mera possibilidade de sua ocorrência, sobretudo com o objetivo de se amparar a vítima por medida de justiça.

Abstract

Abstract Electrification of the transportation sector provides several advantages in favor of climate protection and a shared economy. At the same time, the rapid growth of electric vehicles also demands innovative solutions to mitigate risks to the low-voltage network due to unpredictable charging patterns of electric vehicles. This article conceptualizes a stochastic reinforcement learning agent that learns the optimal policy for regulating the charging power. The optimization objective intends to reduce charging time, thus charging faster while minimizing the expected voltage violations in the distribution network. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization routine where the stochastic policy gradient agent predicts the boundary condition of the inner non-linear optimization problem. The results confirm the performance of the proposed architecture to control the charging power as intended. The article also provides extensive theoretical background and directions for future research in this discipline.

Abstract

The mission of WEST (tungsten-W Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) is to explore long pulse operation in a full tungsten (W) environment for preparing next-step fusion devices (ITER and DEMO) with a focus on testing the ITER actively cooled W divertor in tokamak conditions. Following the successful completion of phase 1 (2016-2021), phase 2 started in December 2022 with the lower divertor made entirely of actively cooled ITER-grade tungsten mono-blocks. A boronization prior the first plasma attempt allowed for a smooth startup with the new divertor. Despite the reduced operating window due to tungsten, rapid progress has been made in long pulse operation, resulting in discharges with a pulse length of 100 s and an injected energy of around 300 MJ per discharge. Plasma startup studies were carried out with equatorial boron nitride limiters to compare them with tungsten limiters, while Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating assisted startup was attempted. High fluence operation in attached regime, which was the main thrust of the first campaigns, already showed the progressive build up of deposits and appearance of dust, impacting the plasma operation as the plasma fluence increased. In total, the cumulated injected energy during the first campaigns reached 43 GJ and the cumulated plasma time exceeded 5 h. Demonstration of controlled X-Point Radiator regime is also reported, opening a promising route for investigating plasma exhaust and plasma-wall interaction issues in more detached regime. This paper summarises the lessons learned from the manufacturing and the first operation of the ITER-grade divertor, describing the progress achieved in optimising operation in a full W environment with a focus on long pulse operation and plasma wall interaction.

Abstract

The DIII-D tokamak has elucidated crucial physics and developed projectable solutions for ITER and fusion power plants in the key areas of core performance, boundary heat and particle transport, and integrated scenario operation, with closing the core-edge integration knowledge gap being the overarching mission. New experimental validation of high-fidelity, multi-channel, non-linear gyrokinetic turbulent transport models for ITER provides strong confidence it will achieve Q ⩾ 10 operation. Experiments identify options for easing H-mode access in hydrogen, and give new insight into the isotopic dependence of transport and confinement. Analysis of 2,1 islands in unoptimized low-torque IBS demonstration discharges suggests their onset time occurs randomly in the constant β phase, most often triggered by non-linear 3-wave coupling, thus identifying an NTM seeding mechanism to avoid. Pure deuterium SPI for disruption mitigation is shown to provide favorable slow cooling, but poor core assimilation, suggesting paths for improved SPI on ITER. At the boundary, measured neutral density and ionization source fluxes are strongly poloidally asymmetric, implying a 2D treatment is needed to model pedestal fuelling. Detailed measurements of pedestal and SOL quantities and impurity charge state radiation in detached divertors has validated edge fluid modelling and new self-consistent ‘pedestal-to-divertor’ integrated modeling that can be used to optimize reactors. New feedback adaptive ELM control minimizes confinement reduction, and RMP ELM suppression with sustained high core performance was obtained for the first time with the outer strike point in a W-coated, compact and unpumped small-angle slot divertor. Advances have been made in integrated operational scenarios for ITER and power plants. Wide pedestal intrinsically ELM-free QH-modes are produced with more reactor-relevant conditions, Low torque IBS with W-equivalent radiators can exhibit predator-prey oscillations in T _e and radiation which need control. High- β _P scenarios with q _min > 2, q _95 –7.9, β _N > 4, β _T –3.3% and H _98y2 > 1.5 are sustained with high density ( $\bar n$ = 7E19 m ^−3 , f _G –1) for 6 τ _E , improving confidence in steady-state tokamak reactors. Diverted NT plasmas achieve high core performance with a non-ELMing edge, offering a possible highly attractive core-edge integration solution for reactors.

Abstract

Recently, experiments on basic plasma physics issues for solving future problems in fusion energy have been performed on a Large Helical Device. There are several problems to be solved in future devices for fusion energy. Emerging issues in burning plasma are: alpha-channeling (ion heating by alpha particles), turbulence and transport in electron dominant heating helium ash exhaust, reduction of the divertor heat load. To solve these problems, understanding the basic plasma physics of (1) wave–particle interaction through (inverse) Landau damping, (2) characteristics of electron-scale (high- k ) turbulence, (3) ion mixing and the isotope effect, and (4) turbulence spreading and detachment, is necessary. This overview discusses the experimental studies on these issues and turbulent transport in multi-ion plasma and other issues in the appendix.

Abstract

We propose a method to design a decentralized energy market which guarantees individual rationality (IR) in expectation, in the presence of system-level grid constraints. We formulate the market as a welfare maximization problem subject to IR constraints, and we make use of Lagrangian duality to model the problem as a n-person non-cooperative game with a unique generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE). We provide a distributed algorithm which converges to the GNE. The convergence and properties of the algorithm are investigated by means of numerical simulations.

118. Constrained hierarchical networked optimization for energy markets

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a distributed control strategy for the design of an energy market. The method relies on a hierarchical structure of aggregators for the coordination of prosumers (agents which can produce and consume energy). The hierarchy reflects the voltage level separations of the electrical grid and allows aggregating prosumers in pools, while taking into account the grid operational constraints. To reach optimal coordination, the prosumers communicate their forecasted power profile to the upper level of the hierarchy. Each time the information crosses upwards a level of the hierarchy, it is first aggregated, both to strongly reduce the data flow and to preserve the privacy. In the first part of the paper, the decomposition algorithm, which is based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), is presented. In the second part, we explore how the proposed algorithm scales with increasing number of prosumers and hierarchical levels, through extensive simulations based on randomly generated scenarios.

Abstract

In inboard-limited plasmas, foreseen to be used in future fusion reactors start-up and ramp down phases, the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) exhibits two regions: the "near" and "far" SOL. The steep radial gradient of the parallel heat flux associated with the near SOL can result in excessive thermal loads onto the solid surfaces, damaging them and/or limiting the operational space of a fusion reactor. In this article, leveraging the results presented in [F. Nespoli et al., Nuclear Fusion 2017], we propose a technique for the mitigation and suppression of the near SOL heat flux feature by impurity seeding. First successful experimental results from the TCV tokamak are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Abstract Background The diagnosis of the active phase of labor is a crucial clinical decision, thus requiring an accurate assessment. This study aimed to build and to validate a predictive model, based on maternal signs and symptoms to identify a cervical dilatation ≥4 cm. Methods A prospective study was conducted from May to September 2018 in a II Level Maternity Unit (development data), and from May to September 2019 in a I Level Maternity Unit (validation data). Abstract

Mid-point Transverse process to Pleura Block (MTPB) is an alternative approach to paravertebral block. We retrospectively assessed hemodynamic stability, inadvertent pleural puncture and antalgic effectiveness of this approach compared with traditional paravertebral block. Moreover, being used to add methylene bleu to local anesthetic solution as a tracer, we compared the diffusion pattern in paravertebral space of the two techniques. We reported retrospectively 40 patients underwent lung lobectomy from July to October 2021 in Monaldi Hospital (Naples, Italy) receiving thoracic paravertebral block (n=20) or mid-point transverse process to pleura block (n=20). The primary outcomes were a 20% mean arterial pressure variation from the base line, chest wall or pleural hematoma and technique failure. Analgesic effectiveness was assessed comparing remifentanil consumption to keep nociception index level < 25 and patient’s VAS in post anesthesia care unit or daycare surgical unit at 60’. Also the methylene blue spread was assessed by a surgeon, blinded to patient’s name reviewing surgery videorecord of every cases. MAP decrease > 20% was greater in the TPVB. No significative differences were reported for pleural punctures, chest wall hematomas or failure of the technique in the two groups. Methylene blue was evident in all patients of the TPVB, while it was not visible in any of the patients of the MTPB group. Remifentanil consumption, nociception index level and postoperative 60’ VAS were greater in the MTPB.Antalgic power and local anesthetic spread of TPVB seems to be superior to the MTPB, even if the safety profile of the latter seems to be better. Due to the retrospective nature of the study and the small number of cases in the sample, further studies are needed.

Abstract

O transporte de equinos tem sido um dos fatores de risco mais associados ao desenvolvimento da pleuropneumonia, isso porque há um grande estresse vivido por esses animais durante o embarque, na viagem e no desembarque, levando a uma queda de imunidade. O sistema respiratório de equinos atletas é um dos mais importantes, uma vez que interfere no seu desempenho. O objetivo desse trabalho, foi relatar um caso atendido no Hovet da Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso – Cuiabá. O animal chegou com histórico de pleuropneumonia após ser transportado por longa distância e com recidivas ao tratamento. Para confirmação do diagnóstico e análise do quadro clínico atual, foram realizados exames laboratoriais e de imagem, incluindo hemograma, perfil bioquímico, citologia, cultivo, antibiograma e ultrassonografia torácica, indicando a presença de pleuropneumonia crônica. A terapia foi realizada com antimicrobianos de amplo espectro e baseados no antibiograma, anti-inflamatórios não esteroidais, mucolítico e cuidados de suporte. Após 29 dias de tratamento, apresentou remissão dos sintomas e fluído pleural, apto à alta hospitalar. A pleuropneumonia tem prognóstico reservado, dependendo da gravidade do quadro e rapidez nas tomadas de decisões. O sucesso do caso, deve-se ao diagnóstico correto e condutas terapêuticas assertivas, resultando em bom prognóstico.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a method to determine the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) from the power measurements of one or more PV systems, located in the same neighborhood. The method is completely unsupervised and is based on a physical model of a PV plant. The precise assessment of solar irradiance is pivotal for the forecast of the electric power generated by photovoltaic (PV) plants. However, on-ground measurements are expensive and are generally not performed for small and medium-sized PV plants. Satellite-based services represent a valid alternative to on site measurements, but their space-time resolution is limited. Results from two case studies located in Switzerland are presented. The performance of the proposed method at assessing GHI is compared with that of free and commercial satellite services. Our results show that the presented method is generally better than satellite-based services, especially at high temporal resolutions.

Abstract

We consider the problem of estimating the unobserved amount of photovoltaic (PV) generation and demand in a power distribution network starting from measurements of the aggregated power flow at the point of common coupling (PCC) and local global horizontal irradiance (GHI). The estimation principle relies on modeling the PV generation as a function of the measured GHI, enabling the identification of PV production patterns in the aggregated power flow measurements. Four estimation algorithms are proposed: the first assumes that variability in the aggregated PV generation is given by variations of PV generation, the next two use a model of the demand to improve estimation performance, and the fourth assumes that, in a certain frequency range, the aggregated power flow is dominated by PV generation dynamics. These algorithms leverage irradiance transposition models to explore several azimuth/tilt configurations and explain PV generation patterns from multiple plants with non-uniform installation characteristics. Their estimation performance is compared and validated with measurements from a real-life setup including 4 houses with rooftop PV installations and battery systems for PV self-consumption.

Abstract

Aim: To evaluate midwives' level of stress and burnout during the COVID‐19 Omicron phase in Italy. Secondary aims were to explore the impact of the pandemic on midwives' personal dimensions and professional activities and potential supporting strategies. Design: A mixed‐methods study was undertaken from July to December 2022. Methods: Data were collected using a national online observational survey. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed to evaluate stress, burnout and the impact of the pandemic on personal and professional dimensions. A deductive qualitative approach was used to analyse open‐ended responses, that were merged with quantitative data following a convergent mixed‐methods approach. Results: A total of 1944 midwives participated in the survey. The stress summary score mean was 10.34, and 562 midwives (28.91%) experienced burnout. The intention to reduce working hours was reported by 202 midwives (10.39%), with 60.40% (n = 122) of them experiencing burnout. The intention to leave clinical practice within the following 2 years was reported by 239 (12.29%), with 68.20% (n = 163) of them experiencing burnout. All the personal dimensions and professional activities considered were defined by more than half of midwives as being impacted 'Moderately' or 'To a great extent' by pandemic. Stress and burnout frequencies increased when the midwives' perception of the pandemic effects was higher. Potential supporting strategies described by midwives as the most important in increasing their ability to cope with the pandemic were 'Women's awareness of the midwives' role' (n = 1072; 55.14%) and 'Family and friends' emotional support' (n = 746; 38.38%). Conclusion: Our findings suggested strategies to support a positive and safe working environment for midwives during a pandemic emergency, with potential transferability to similar contexts when human resources are lacking. It is recommended that maternity services provide the necessary resources for a safe and supportive working environment to prevent high stress levels and chronic burnout. Impact: Studies conducted during the first COVID‐19 pandemic wave showed an increased level of stress, anxiety, burnout, post‐traumatic stress disorder and depression experienced by healthcare professionals; moreover, midwives experienced drastic changes in care pathways and policies with struggles identified when providing high‐quality woman‐centred care following pandemic restrictions. Although it is recommended, there is lack of knowledge about long‐term psychological effects of COVID‐19 for midwives. Our study highlights that during the Omicron wave midwives experienced a high level of stress and burnout with an impact on individual dimensions and professional activities. Their stress and burnout were influenced by several factors, including restrictions in place, lack of organizational acknowledgement, work overload and need for extra childcare cover. Maternity services should provide the necessary resources for a safe and supportive working environment to prevent high stress levels and chronic burnout. Recommendations on how to facilitate this are suggested. Abstract

INTRODUCTION Collecting women's views and suggestions for improving quality of maternal-newborn care (QMNC) is a crucial aspect of maternity care evaluation often overlooked in Italy and globally. Childbearing women experienced numerous challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic including the rapid and significant reorganization of maternity services and care. Their perspective on what to prioritize for QMNC improvement is hence pivotal. The aim of this study was to explore maternal suggestions for QMNC improvement from women who gave birth during the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Data were collected from an open-ended question included in a validated online questionnaire administered to mothers who gave birth in an Italian hospital between November 2020 to March 2022. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis and mapped against the WHO Standards for improving QMNC and the WHO Framework of QMNC. RESULTS The thematic analysis identified five main themes from the 2017 responses: 1) Support for mothers during the postnatal period; 2) Better use of resources; 3) Improvement of the maternity environment; 4) Reconsideration of organizational aspects; and 5) Guarantee of respectful practices. Women commented on all dimensions of the WHO framework except for two provision of care subdomains 'actionable information and functional referral systems'. CONCLUSIONS This is the first qualitative study in Italy focusing on women's suggestions for improving QMNC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its findings can be used to inform what aspects of QMNC need improvement in Italy. Abstract

INTRODUCTION Spinning Babies® procedures and the Rebozo technique have been recently implemented as additional interventions in laboring women with a fetus in occiput posterior position (OPP) to favor the rotation to an anterior position, which improve birth experience and health outcomes. Our study aimed to compare the probability of occurrence of persistent OPP (POPP) of the fetal head at the second stage of labor between retrospective and prospective cohorts and to assess associated sociodemographic, obstetric and intrapartum factors. METHODS We conducted a combined prospective and retrospective cohort study including 1500 women giving birth in 2017 (retrospective cohort) and 779 between 15 May and 15 December 2023 (prospective cohort). Each cohort was divided into two sub-cohorts depending on presence of OPP. Primary outcomes were compared the probability of occurrence of POPP in the two OPP sub-cohorts by a log binomial regression and logistic regression. A p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Data analysis was performed using Stata/MP18.0 RESULTS The proportion of OPP at the onset of labor was similar between the two cohorts (34.9% vs 35.1%). The probability of occurrence of POPP was significantly lower in the prospective OPP sub-cohort (27.7%, n=65/235) compared to the retrospective OPP sub-cohort (35.8%, n=154/430) (risk difference, RD= -0.081; 95% CI: -0.15 -0.008; p=0.031). In the retrospective OPP sub-cohort, maternal age ≥35 years (RD=0.096; 95% CI: 0.001-0.190, p=0.044) and nulliparity (RD= -0.100; 95% CI: -0.190 - -0.001, p=0.036) were significantly associated with the probability of POPP. Abstract Background Derangement of body composition has been associated with dismal long-term survival in several gastrointestinal cancers including rectal tumors treated with neoadjuvant therapies. The role of specific preoperative anthropometric indexes on the oncologic outcomes of patients undergoing upfront surgery for rectal cancer has not been investigated. The aim of the study is to evaluate the association of body composition and overall survival in this specific cohort. Methods Lumbar computed tomography images, obtained within the 30 days previous to surgery, between January 2009 and December 2016, were used to calculate population-specific thresholds of muscle mass (sarcopenia), subcutaneous and visceral adiposity, visceral obesity, sarcopenic obesity, and myosteatosis. These body composition variables were related with overall survival (OS), tumor-specific survival (TSS), and disease-free survival (DFS). OS, TSS, and DFS were evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of mortality, tumor-specific mortality, and recurrence, and data were presented as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results During the study period, 411 patients underwent rectal resection for cancer, and among these, 129 were without neoadjuvant chemoradiation. The median follow-up was 96.7 months. At the end of the follow-up, 41 patients (31.8%) had died; of these, 26 (20.1%) died for tumor-related reasons, and 36 (27.1%) experienced disease recurrence. One-, three-, and five-year OS was 95.7%, 86.0%, and 76.8% for non-sarcopenic patients versus 82.4%, 58.8%, and 40.0% for sarcopenic ones respectively (p < 0.001).
