The inhibitory Fc receptor, FcgammaRIIB, provides a signal that aborts B cell antigen receptor activation, blocking extracellular calcium influx. Because the protein-tyrosine phosphatase SHP-1 binds tyrosyl phosphorylated FcgammaRIIB and FcgammaRIIB-mediated inhibition is defective in motheaten (me/me) mice, which do not express SHP-1, it was proposed that SHP-1 mediates FcgammaRIIB signaling in B cells (D'Ambrosio, D., Hippen, K. L., Minskoff, S. A., Mellman, I., Pani, G., Siminovitch, K. A., and Cambier, J. C. (1995) Science 268, 293-297). However, SHP-1 is dispensable for FcgammaRIIB-mediated inhibition of FcepsilonRI signaling in mast cells (Ono, M., Bolland, S., Tempst, P., and Ravetch, J. V. (1996) Nature 383, 263-266), prompting us to re-examine the role of SHP-1 in FcgammaRIIB signaling in B cells. We generated immortalized sIgM+, FcgammaRIIB+ cell lines from me/me mice and normal littermates. Co-ligation of FcgammaRIIB and the sIgM antigen receptor inhibits calcium influx in both cell lines. Inhibition is reversed by preincubation with anti-FcgammaRIIB antibodies, indicating that it is mediated by FcgammaRIIB. The inositol 5' phosphatase SHIP is recruited to tyrosyl-phosphorylated FcgammaRIIB in both cell lines. FcgammaRIIB-mediated CD19 dephosphorylation also occurs in the presence or the absence of SHP-1. Our results establish that SHP-1 is dispensable for FcgammaRIIB-mediated inhibition of sIgM antigen receptor signaling.

• A glare tester was described previously and was found, in the presence of cataracts, to be almost twice as predictive as was Snellen measurement for determining visual acuity outdoors. The current study tests the reproducibility of glare test scores and the influence of refractive error and contrast sensitivity on such scores when used in a clinical environment. Although the effects of visual acuity and impaired contrast sensitivity were found to be statistically significant components of glare test scores, the magnitudes of their effects were found to be clinically insignificant. Sequential retesting of physiologically stable eyes or, in the case of progressive cataracts, within intervals short enough to preclude discernible lenticular changes indicated that, for the most part, reproducibility of glare testing was comparable to that of visual acuity testing.

• A simple, inexpensive, readily available, easy-to-service clinical glare tester combines an audioviewer table-top projector with a series of specially made slides. Each slide supplies a constant glare source and a variable-contrast, central target. The device was evaluated on 161 normal subjects, 144 patients with cataracts, and 110 aphakic patients whose visual acuity was corrected with spectacles or intraocular lenses. Results showed that aphakic patients, irrespective of the mode of correction, were statistically more glare sensitive than normal phakic patients. Further results confirmed earlier studies that demonstrated that glare sensitivity also increased with age in normal eyes. Broad potential exists for using this method of glare testing in industry, transportation media, and medicolegal and clinical ophthalmologic studies.

Diallyl thiosulfinate (allicin) is the agent found in garlic which is responsible for the antibacterial and antifungal activity of extracts of this plant. The effect of bacteriostatic concentrations of allicin (0.2 to 0.5 mM) on the growth of Salmonella typhimurium revealed a pattern of inhibition characterized by: (i) a lag of approximately 15 min between addition of allicin and onset of inhibition, (ii) a transitory inhibition phase whose duration was proportional to allicin concentration and inversely proportional to culture density, (iii) a resumed growth phase which showed a lower rate of growth than in uninhibited controls, and (iv) an entry into stationary phase at a lower culture density. Whereas DNA and protein syntheses showed a delayed and partial inhibition by allicin, inhibition of RNA synthesis was immediate and total, suggesting that this is the primary target of allicin action.

The role that polymers will play as optical waveguides in the photonic communications revolution is described, including examples of polymer photonic devices, physical and optical requirements, aging mechanisms, competing materials, electric‐field poled polymer films, room‐temperature processed polymer films, and analytical methods for studying physical aging. Several important recent aging studies on nonlinear optical polymers, both thermoplastic and thermoset, are reviewed.
