Poverty remains a serious problem in Nigeria; women are among those mostly affected and are often deprived in many ways. This paper uses the multidimensional approach to examine poverty levels among women in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, Oyo State. Primary data was obtained from a sample of 393 women across the population density areas on socio-economic characteristics and poverty indicators (health, education and standard of living). The Alkire-Foster multidimensional approach was used to estimate the multidimensional poverty index (MPI) for the sampled women. The weights assigned to these poverty dimensions were generated using the multiple correspondence analysis. The MPI for each woman were categorized as abject poor (deprived in at least two dimensions), moderate poor (deprived in one dimension) and non-poor (not deprived in any dimension). The mean age of the women was 30.8±6.7 years. One-third of the respondents were mostly artisans (30.0%) and traders (26.5%), and 52.2% had completed secondary education. About 23.0% of women were deprived in education, 61.0% in health and 70.4% in standard of living. Based on location, the study indicated that the women in the medium and high density areas are mostly deprived in the different dimensions of poverty. When the poverty cut off K= 1, poverty incidence is 94% and 51.7% of the women were multidimensional poor as against 28% poverty incidence and 19.6% poor women when k=3 using the Alkire-Foster Multidimensional methodology. This implies that when women are deprived in at least one dimension; 51.7% are multidimensional poor. More than half of the respondents (51.0%) were categorized as moderately poor, 26.0% were abject poor while 23.2% were non-poor. This study revealed high poverty levels among women in Ibadan South West Local Government Area. Deprivation in standard of living and health in the three areas could be improved upon through the concerted effort of the government with appropriate ministries by initiating more productive and empowerment programs to improve their purchasing power and disseminating educative information that will improve their nutritional status through health talks to reduce the level of multidimensional poverty in urban locations respectively. Blood microsampling, particularly dried blood spots (DBSs), is an attractive minimally-invasive approach that is well suited for home sampling and predictive medicine associated with longitudinal follow-up of the elderly. However, in vitro diagnostic quantification of biomarkers from DBS poses a major challenge. Clinical mass spectrometry can reliably quantify blood proteins in various research projects. Our goal here was to use mass spectrometry of DBS in a real-world clinical setting and compared it to the standard immunoassay method. We also sought to correlate DBS mass spectrometry measurements with clinical indices. A clinical trial of diagnostic equivalence was conducted to compare conventional venous samples quantified by immunoassay and DBSs quantified by mass spectrometry in an elderly population. We assayed three protein biomarkers of nutritional and inflammatory status: prealbumin (transthyretin), C-reactive protein, and transferrin. The analysis of DBSs showed satisfactory variability and low detection limits. Statistical analysis confirmed that the two methods give comparable results at clinical levels of accuracy. In conclusion, we demonstrated, in a real-life setting, that DBSs can be used to measure prealbumin, CRP and transferrin, which are commonly used markers of nutritional status and inflammation in the elderly. However, there was no correlation with patient frailty for these proteins. Early detection and regular monitoring of nutritional and inflammatory problems using DBS appear to be clinically feasible. In response to a meal, insulin drives hepatic glycogen synthesis to help regulate systemic glucose homeostasis. The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a well-established insulin target and contributes to the postprandial control of liver lipid metabolism, autophagy, and protein synthesis. However, its role in hepatic glucose metabolism is less understood. Here, we used metabolomics, isotope tracing, and mouse genetics to define a role for liver mTORC1 signaling in the control of postprandial glycolytic intermediates and glycogen deposition. We show that mTORC1 is required for glycogen synthase activity and glycogenesis. Mechanistically, hepatic mTORC1 activity promotes the feeding-dependent induction of Ppp1r3b, a gene encoding a phosphatase important for glycogen synthase activity whose polymorphisms are linked to human diabetes. Reexpression of Ppp1r3b in livers lacking mTORC1 signaling enhances glycogen synthase activity and restores postprandial glycogen content. mTORC1-dependent transcriptional control of Ppp1r3b is facilitated by FOXO1, a well characterized transcriptional regulator involved in the hepatic response to nutrient intake. The majority of Iranian fig production is exported, making it one of the world's most well-known healthy crops. Therefore, the main objective of the current experiment was to investigate the effects of various types of organic fertilizers, such as animal manure (cow and sheep), bird manure (partridge, turkey, quail, and chicken), and vermicompost, on the nutritional status of trees, vegetative and reproductive tree characteristics, fruit yield, and fruit quality traits in dried fig cultivar ("Sabz"). According to the findings, applying organic fertilizers, particularly turkey and quail, significantly improves vegetative and reproductive characteristics. However, other manures such as sheep, chicken, and vermicompost had a similar effect on the growth parameters of fig trees. Additionally, the findings indicated that except for potassium, use of all organic fertilizers had an impact on macro and microelements such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and sodium amount in fig tree leaves. Also, based on fruit color analysis in dried figs, the use of all organic fertilizers improved fruit color. Moreover, the analyses fruit biochemical showed that the use of some organic fertilizers improved that TSS and polyphenol compounds such as coumarin, vanillin, hesperidin gallic acid and trans frolic acid. In general, the results indicated that the addition of organic fertilizers, especially turkey manure, led to increased vegetative productivity and improvement in the fruit quality of the rain-fed fig orchard. For European silver fir (Abies alba (Mill)), reliable threshold values for the sulfur nutritional status are not available. Because European silver fir is an important coniferous tree species in Central Europe and due to the fact that by reduced S emissions, S is becoming a more and more critical nutrient this knowledge gap should be closed. From the interpretation of the cumulative distribution of sulfur concentrations in first‐year needles, the respective threshold values for the range of normal nutrition as well as the threshold for deficiency could be derived. When knowing these thresholds also the range of harmonic nutrition, which is the range for the optimal relation of two nutrients, could be calculated. As compared to the very few literature data available and compared to the respective values of the two most important European conifers Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), the values derived for S nutrition of European silver fir are very reasonable. With respect to the S nutritional thresholds, European silver fir is very close to the values of the other two conifers, whereas the harmonic range of S in relation to N is a bit shifted to higher values indicating that European silver fir has a slightly higher demand for S (in relation to N). There is a certain time lag between the reduction of SO2 emissions in Europe and the reduction of S concentrations in needles, suggesting that S stored in the soil during periods of high emissions is relevant for S nutrition of trees for a longer period of time. Animal flesh foods are rich in bioavailable iron but infrequently consumed by young children. We aimed to determine whether flesh food intake was associated with iron and anaemia status among 585 Malawian infants enroled in a 6‐month egg‐feeding trial. The percentage of days of small fish, large fish and meat consumption were assessed through weekly 7‐day animal‐source food screeners. Grams of intake were assessed through 24‐h recalls conducted at 6–9, 9–12 and 12–15 months of age. Plasma ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) and haemoglobin concentrations were measured at 6–9 and 12–15 months of age. Iron biomarkers were adjusted for inflammation during analysis. At enrolment, each flesh food category was consumed by <5% of children in the past 24 h. Over the next 6 months, small fish, large fish and meat were consumed on 25%, 8% and 6% of days, respectively, with mean usual intakes of <5 g/day. More frequent small fish consumption was associated with lower sTfR (geometric mean ratio [95% CI]: 0.98 mg/L [0.96, 1.00] per 10 percentage point difference) but not ferritin (1.03 µg/L [0.98, 1.07]) or haemoglobin (1.01 g/dL [1.00, 1.01]). Large fish consumption was associated with higher anaemia (prevalence ratio [95% CI]: 1.09 [1.01, 1.19]) and lower iron deficiency (0.96 [0.93, 1.00]) prevalence. Gram intakes of flesh food categories were not associated with any iron or anaemia indicators. Small fish were a primary contributor to flesh food intake in this cohort of Malawian children, although usual portions were small. Fish was associated with modest improvements to iron status, but meat was too infrequent to be associated with anaemia and iron deficiency. Key messages: Small fish was the most frequently consumed flesh food among young children: 4% at enrolment and 40% at the 6‐month follow‐up. On average, children consumed small fish once every 4 days.Despite small usual portions of about 5 g/day, frequent consumption of small fish was associated with moderate improvements in iron status.Large fish consumption was associated with lower iron deficiency but not with mean plasma ferritin or sTfR. Many children in low‐ and middle‐income countries are not attaining their developmental potential. Stunting is associated with poor child development, but it is not known which correlates of stunting are impairing child development. We explored potential socioeconomic, nutritional, clinical, and household correlates of early child development among 12–59‐month‐old children with stunting in a cross‐sectional study in Uganda. Development was assessed using the Malawi Development Assessment Tool (MDAT) across four domains of gross and fine motor, language, and social skills. Linear regression analysis was used to assess correlates of development in the four domains and total MDAT score. Of 750 children included, the median [interquartile range] age was 30 [23−41] months, 55% of the children resided in rural settings with 21% from female‐headed households and 47% of mothers had no schooling. The mean ± standard deviation height‐for‐age z‐score (HAZ) was −3.02 ± 0.74, 40% of the children had a positive malaria test and 65% were anaemic (haemoglobin < 110 g/L). One‐third had children's books at home, majority (96%) used household objects to play with and most of them (70%) used toys as pretence items like those to mimic cooking. After age, sex, and site adjustments, HAZ (0.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.14−0.33) and head circumference (0.07, 95% CI: 0.02−0.12) were positive correlates of total MDAT score, whereas weight‐for‐height z‐score (WHZ) was not. Current breastfeeding was associated with 0.41 (95% CI: 0.17−0.65) lower total MDAT score. Children from households with a single income earner had 0.22 (95% CI: 0.06−0.37) lower total MDAT score. Furthermore, severe food insecurity, inflammation and positive malaria test were associated with lower scores for motor development. All family care indicator subscales (FCIs) positively correlated with the total MDAT score and this association was independent of household's socioeconomic status. In conclusion, stunting degree, head circumference, number of household income earners and stimulation by improved FCIs correlate with early child development among stunted children. The negative association with prolonged breastfeeding is likely due to reverse causality. Identified correlates may inform initiatives to support children with stunting attain their development potential. Information on malnutrition for school‐age children and adolescents (5–19 years) in South Asia is fragmented and inconsistent, which limits the prioritization of nutrition policies, programmes and research for this age group. This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the burden of malnutrition for children and adolescents aged 5–19 years in South Asia, and on interventions to improve their nutritional status. Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline and Google Scholar were systematically searched for articles published between January 2016 and November 2022. Eligible studies reported the prevalence of undernutrition, overweight/obesity, micronutrient deficiencies and unhealthy dietary intakes, and interventions that aimed to address these in South Asia. In total, 296 articles met our inclusion criteria. Evidence revealed widespread, yet heterogeneous, prevalence of undernutrition among South Asian children and adolescents: thinness (1.9%–88.8%), wasting (3%–48%), underweight (9.5%–84.4%) and stunting (3.7%–71.7%). A triple burden of malnutrition was evident: the prevalence of overweight and obesity ranged from 0.2% to 73% and 0% to 38% (with rapidly rising trends), respectively, alongside persistent micronutrient deficiencies. Diets often failed to meet nutritional requirements and high levels of fast‐food consumption were reported. Education, fortification, supplementation and school feeding programmes demonstrated beneficial effects on nutritional status. Comprehensive and regular monitoring of all forms of malnutrition among children and adolescents, across all countries in South Asia is required. Further, more large‐scale intervention research is needed to ensure policy and programmes effectively target and address malnutrition among children and adolescents in South Asia. Background: Developmental models suggest that the phenotypes may arise from an immediate or mediated adaptive metabolic response of the perinatal growth. Evidence on the cumulative effects of growth and factors associated with risk of insulin resistance in adolescents is lacking. Objective: To investigate the association between birthweight, weight gain during infancy, childhood and adolescence and the triglyceride-glucose index in adolescents. Methods: This is a cohort of 217 children born at term, followed for the first six months, and reassessed at 8 and 18 years of age. The variables of interest were birthweight, postnatal growth defined as rapid postnatal growth when the weight gain from birth to six months of age was greater than 0.67 z-score, and the same criterion was used for high BMI gain from ages 6 months to 8 years, and from 8 to 18 years. Socioeconomic condition, nutritional status, practice of physical exercises and consumption of ultra-processed foods were verified. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to verify the effect of the variables on the triglyceride-glucose index. Results: Birthweight was not associated with triglyceride-glucose index in adolescence. Rapid postnatal growth during the first 6 months, higher BMI gain from 8 to 18 years and higher waist circumference contributed significantly to explain higher triglyceride-glucose index. Conclusion for Practice: Our findings suggest that rapid postnatal growth may be one of the first signs of a higher triglyceride-glucose index in adolescence and that attention should be paid to the greater gain in body mass between childhood and adolescence for the risk of a higher triglyceride-glucose index. Significance: What is Already Known on this Subject?: Metabolic disorders are associated with excess weight and body fat in adolescence, however, growth deviations in phases of rapid human development, for example, perinatal period, childhood and adolescence, may be the first signs of future metabolic changes. Less is known about the relationship between growth gains during infancy, childhood and adolescence and the risk of insulin resistance. Objectives: The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with a risk of suspected developmental delay (SDD) in high-risk children in Thailand. Methods: We used data on children enrolled for developmental delay (DD) screening across Thailand collected by the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development, Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. Children who were under 5 years of age with a birth weight of fewer than 2500 g and/or birth asphyxia in Thailand with high risk of DD were assessed using the Developmental Assessment for Intervention Manual (DAIM) between August 2013 and November 2019 (N = 14,314). Results: The high-risk children who had a gestational age at birth of < 37 weeks (adjusted odds ratio = 1.54; 95% confidence interval = 1.39–1.70) and/or had a birth weight < 2500 g (1.22; 1.02–1.45), or had mothers who were not government officers (1.46; 1.11–1.93), had a low education level (1.36; 1.19–1.55), had a poor nutritional status (1.34; 1.09–1.65), and/or who were living in a high-altitude area (1.59; 1.32–1.91) were at a higher risk of SDD. Conclusions for Practice: Children with a low birth weight and/or asphyxia during birth had a high risk of DD. SDD monitoring of children by community health workers and/or by developing outreach strategies, especially in underserved regions, should be considered. In addition, developing policies and guidelines, and intervention for high-risk children ought to be conducted to reduce the subsequent problems caused by the late detection of DD. Significance: What is already known on this subject? Developmental disability is a common problem in children under 5 years of age, especially in low-middle income countries. Previous studies reported that socio-economic and environmental factors (e.g., low household income, undernourishment, or living in an urban residence) and maternal factors (e.g., age during pregnancy, educational level, number of pregnancies, breastfeeding, or medical disorders during pregnancy, smoking, or drinking alcohol behavior) were associated with a higher risk of DD in children. What this study adds? This study conducted a screening for suspected development (SDD) to reduce the potential negative effects of developmental delay. We also revealed the possible early identification of SDD by investigating the factors associated with SDD. Our findings suggested that a child born after a short gestation with low birth weight, having a mother who is not a government officer, has a low educational level, has poor nutritional status, and/or lives at a high altitude, are associated with a higher risk of SDD. Purpose Cobalt metallosis is a rare but dangerous complication of total joint arthroplasty resulting from deterioration of the joint leading to metal-on-metal friction and breakdown. Potential manifestations vary in severity and include dilated cardiomyopathy, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive disturbances, neuropathy, fatigue, and weakness. The therapeutic role of N -acetylcysteine in metallosis has been investigated due to its ability to chelate with heavy metal ions, such as cobalt and chromium. Summary Here we report the case of a 71-year-old female who presented with suspected metallosis diagnosed in the outpatient setting due to symptoms of significant weight loss and failure to thrive. This metallosis was secondary to the hardware breakdown of a left knee revision roughly 6 years previously. The patient was not a surgical candidate due to her poor nutrition status and was started on nasojejunal tube feeds along with N -acetylcysteine 600 mg by mouth twice daily for 45 days. The patient's serum cobalt levels decreased from 61.7 µg/L on admission to 16.2 µg/L prior to her undergoing proper revision of the left knee roughly 2 months after admission to the hospital. The patient tolerated treatment well and was able to be discharged the day after surgery, with no further complaints or complications. Conclusion This case report contributes to the body of literature suggesting that administration of N -acetylcysteine can reduce serum cobalt concentrations, without notable adverse effects, in the context of prosthetic knee–associated metallosis. Background: Both malnutrition and at‐risk of malnutrition are prevalent among older patients receiving home medical care. Discontinuation of home medical care usually occurs when an older patient is admitted to a hospital or nursing home or dies. This study aimed to assess prospective associations between nutritional status and discontinuation of home medical care in older patients. Methods: Three hundred and thirty‐three Japanese older patients receiving home‐visit nursing care services were included in this study. Their nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment®‐Short Form, and patients were classified into three groups (well‐nourished, at‐risk of malnutrition and malnourished). Outcomes were confirmed at the 1‐year follow‐up survey. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for discontinuation of home medical care based on nutritional status were calculated using a Cox proportional hazard model. Covariates included age, sex, living status, economic status, activities of daily living, comorbidities and dysphagia status. Results: In total, 297 patients (median age: 84 years) were analysed. At baseline, 48.5% of the patients were at‐risk of malnutrition and 18.9% were malnourished. During the observation period of 1 year, 27.6% patients discontinued their home medical care. In the adjusted model, the HR for discontinuation of home medical care among those at‐risk of malnutrition was 2.44 (95% CI: 1.34–4.45) times than that of the well‐nourished group, although the malnourished group was not significantly associated with discontinuation of home medical care (HR: 1.69, 95% CI: 0.77–3.72; referent: well‐nourished). Conclusions: At‐risk of malnutrition was associated with discontinuation of home medical care among older patients. Key points: Older patients receiving home medical care are already at risk for discontinuation of home medical care when they are at‐risk of malnutrition.The at‐risk of malnutrition is a stage of great opportunity for preventing malnutrition, as its early recognition and appropriate nutritional management may lead to the prevention of malnutrition, eventually contributing to an increase in the length of home medical care.Future studies are warranted to investigate whether nutritional interventions for those at‐risk of malnutrition contribute to prolonging the length of home medical care by improving nutritional status. Qualitative research methods are increasingly used in nutrition and dietetics research. Ethnography is an underexploited approach which seeks to explore the diversity of people and cultures in a given setting, providing a better understanding of the influences that determine their choices and behaviours. It is argued that traditional ethnography, that is, the methodology of living within participant communities, is a dated practice, with roots in colonialism, accessible to only researchers with the means, connections and status to conduct such research, typically white, privileged males. This paper proposes a formal interpretation of 'patchwork ethnography', whereby research is carried out in situ around existing modern‐day commitments of the researcher, thus enabling more researchers within health, nutrition and dietetic practice to benefit from the rich data that can be discovered from communities. This review proposes the concept that pragmatic patchwork ethnography is required, proposing a framework for implementation, providing researchers, particularly within the fields of human nutrition, dietetics and health, the accessibility and means to deploy a meaningful client‐centric methodology. We present pragmatic patchwork ethnography as a modern method for use within multiple healthcare settings, thus adding a progressive brick in the wall of qualitative research. Background: Peritoneal dialysis is a commonly used treatment for chronic kidney failure patients. Studies have shown that long‐term peritoneal dialysis can lead to various degrees of malnutrition. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the nutritional conditions of patients with peritoneal dialysis. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects of intensive nutritional nursing combined with a 3‐day diet diary intervention on the nutritional condition of peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods: In total, 163 patients were included in this study and, after 6 months of intervention, their nutritional and biochemical indicators, body weight, body mass index (BMI) and intake of dietary ingredients were analysed. Results: After the intervention, patients' serum albumin, haemoglobin, prealbumin, body weight, BMI and cholesterol levels were significantly increased (p < 0.05). Also, the daily energy and protein intake were significantly increased, whereas phosphorus intake was decreased (p < 0.05). Of note, the effective rate of intervention was 63.8%, respectively. We also found that factors such as the patient's age, education degree, income level and peritoneal dialysis age were the risk factors associated with malnutrition. Moreover, patients younger than 55 years old, with dialysis age younger than 5 years, unmarried/divorced and high school graduates, had higher chances of effective intervention, whereas the possibility of effective intervention was lower when the per capita monthly household income was less than 4000 Yuan. Conclusions: In conclusion, intensive nutritional nursing combined with a 3‐day dietary diary intervention can significantly improve the nutritional condition and optimise the diet structure of peritoneal dialysis patients with malnutrition. These findings provide evidence for healthcare providers to develop personalised interventions to address malnutrition in this population. Background: Malnutrition is highly prevalent and associated with complications and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Methods: This was a prospective observational study. Patients with cirrhosis were screened using the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002, the Royal Free Hospital‐Nutritional Prioritizing Tool and the Skeletal Muscle Index. Then, the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and consistency with the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria results were calculated. We also analysed the association between nutritional status and short‐term prognosis. Results: We enrolled 125 patients with cirrhosis, of whom 59.20% and 60.00% were malnourished based on the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria and Skeletal Muscle Index. Some 53.60% and 65.60%, respectively, were classified medium‐to‐high nutritional risk by Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 and the Royal Free Hospital‐Nutritional Prioritizing Tool. The Royal Free Hospital‐Nutritional Prioritizing Tool had the best predictive value, and it was more sensitive and had a better negative predictive value than the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 Tool. The Skeletal Muscle Index also had good sensitivity and predictive value. The Royal Free Hospital‐Nutritional Prioritizing Tool, Skeletal Muscle Index and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria showed high concordance. The 3‐ and 6‐month mortality rates were significantly higher for patients with moderate‐to‐high nutritional risk or malnutrition, regardless of the tool. Conclusions: When assessing cirrhosis with the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria, the Royal Free Hospital‐Nutritional Prioritizing Tool is best for nutritional screening and the Skeletal Muscle Index is also a good nutritional assessment tool. Background: Although it is widely known that patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can develop zinc deficiency, in our previous analysis, the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was not independently associated with the serum zinc level. Thus, a post hoc analysis was conducted to investigate the involvement of nutritional status. Methods: A total of 655 subjects not on dialysis (402 males; mean age, 57 ± 18 years) who underwent serum zinc level measurements at Jikei University Hospital between April 2018 and March 2019 were selected using the Standardized Structured Medical Information eXchange2 (SS-MIX2) system. In addition, anthropometric data and the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) representing nutritional status were obtained, and the relationship between the serum zinc level and nutritional status was investigated by multiple regression analysis. Results: The serum albumin level and the GNRI were lower in the zinc-deficiency group, and both were positively associated with the serum zinc level (rho = 0.44, P < 0.01 and rho = 0.44, P < 0.01, respectively). On multiple regression analysis, the GNRI (t = 3.09, P < 0.01) and serum albumin level (t = 4.75, P < 0.01) were independently associated with the serum zinc level. Although a higher eGFR was associated with a higher serum zinc level, this association disappeared on multivariate analysis. Conclusion: In this post hoc analysis, the GNRI, as well as the serum albumin level, were correlated with the serum zinc level, indicating that nutritional status is an important determinant of the zinc level. BACKGROUND: Patients with head and neck cancer are prone to malnutrition, which can lead to adverse health outcomes. A review of the literature revealed a lack of systematic reviews addressing risk factors for malnutrition in this population. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to fill the knowledge gap by identifying risk factors for malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed®, Web of Science, Embase®, and Cochrane Library databases, spanning from their inception until June 2023. Three researchers critically evaluated the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two investigators independently screened the literature and extracted data, resolving any discrepancies through consensus. FINDINGS: This systematic review includes 18 studies. The results indicated that risk factors for malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer encompass disease-related, genetic, lifestyle, nutritional health, physiologic, psychological, and treatment-related factors. Patients receiving oncology care are at risk for malnutrition, which is associated with decreased cancer treatment tolerance, lower quality of life, and increased mortality. Implementation of frequent nutritional screening is critical to mitigating malnutrition risk and improving patient outcomes. Guidelines recommend frequent nutritional screening using validated screening tools in the ambulatory oncology setting, yet screening is not part of standard supportive care. Summary: Periodic limb movements during sleep and obstructive sleep apnea are both associated with increased sympathetic tone, and have been proposed as risk factors for heart diseases and, in particular, cardiovascular disease. As sympathetic system activation may lead to dyslipidaemia, periodic limb movements during sleep could be an additional risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The aim of the study was to determine whether the presence of periodic limb movements during sleep affects serum lipid levels in obstructive sleep apnea. Total cholesterol, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, non‐ high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated in 4138 patients with obstructive sleep apnea in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) cohort, divided into those with periodic limb movements during sleep index ≥ 15 per hr (n = 628) and controls (n = 3510). ANCOVA adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, apnea–hypopnea index, alcohol intake, smoking status, diabetes, insomnia and study site was used to assess differences in lipids between periodic limb movements during sleep and controls. Patients with periodic limb movements during sleep (24% female, 54.4 ± 12.1 years, body mass index 31.9 ± 5.8 kg m−2, apnea–hypopnea index 36.7 ± 25.4 per hr) had higher triglyceride (1.81 ± 1.04 versus 1.69 ± 0.90 mmol L−1, p = 0.002) and lower high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (1.19 ± 0.34 versus 1.24 ± 0.37 mmol L−1, p = 0.002) levels, whilst there was no difference in either total cholesterol (4.98 ± 1.10 versus 4.94 ± 1.07 mmol L−1), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (3.04 ± 0.96 versus 2.98 ± 0.98 mmol L−1) or non‐ high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (3.78 ± 1.10 versus 3.70 ± 1.05 mmol L−1) concentrations (all p > 0.05). The results remained unchanged after most sensitivity analyses. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea with periodic limb movements during sleep had more prevalent cardiovascular disease (11% versus 6%, p < 0.01). Periodic limb movements during sleep in obstructive sleep apnea is associated with dyslipidaemia independently of important confounders. Antipredator responses could affect nutrient intake, which could lead to nutritional deficits. However, little is known about the antipredator response of small herbivores because most are nocturnal or crepuscular and therefore very difficult to study in the field. Therefore, we experimentally assessed the effect of a reactive response to predation risk on the nutrient (i.e., phosphorous) intake of the European hare (Lepus europaeus) using three different playback sounds. Additionally, we studied the time spent being costly vigilant, the time spent foraging, and the vegetation height in which the hares were present using accelerometers and GPS. Our results showed that elevated predation risk from our playback experiment did not affect the (1) phosphorus intake, (2) time spent being costly vigilant, and (3) time spent in tall vegetation. However, elevated predation risk did increase the time spent foraging. Possibly hares spent more time foraging with an increased predation risk because hares cannot seek refuge from predators. Additionally, the effect on phosphorus intake could be weak because phosphorous intake does not benefit a flight escape, while the reactive response acts late in the predation sequence limiting the effect on hare ecology. Prey anti-predator responses seem strongly related to the escape tactics of prey species that can differ between different habitats and the time of the day. The article summarizes insights on child care providers' experiences participating in Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) during the COVID-19 pandemic, obtained through surveys with a convenience sample of family child care providers conducted in early fall 2021. Topics include prior evidence on the effectiveness of COVID-19 relief funds in providing critical short-term support for child care programs, challenges during the pandemic, and impact of COVID-19 on child care operation.

Little is known about the partnerships formed between early care and education (ECE) programs and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and other organizations to continue to feed young children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Such information can provide important lessons to build ECE capacity for feeding children during future emergencies and has the potential strengthen the ECE food systems. This study aimed to identify the unique partnerships that CACFP state agencies established to provide nutrition to young children during the COVID-19 pandemic Qualitative semi-structured interviews with 24 participants representing 21 states across the United States. Virtual interviews with CACFP directors from December 2020 through May 2021. Following the realist method, transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Codes were developed inductively and grouped to identify themes and subthemes. Four themes were identified: (1) CACFP partnerships that supported children and families directly; (2) CACFP partnerships that built the capacity of ECE providers to provide food to children in their own settings; (3) CACFP systems-level partnerships that improved coordination of efforts to continue to feed children in ECE; and (4) CACFP directors encouraged other CACFP state agencies to build nontraditional, diverse partnerships that can be leveraged during pandemics and other natural disasters. Within these themes (subthemes), the purpose of the partnerships focused on improving waiver utilization (eg, Department of Transportation, state health departments), improving food access (eg, Summer Food Service Program [SFSP], food banks, grocery stores, dairy councils), supporting ECE programs to participate in food reimbursement programs (eg, SFSP, CACFP sponsors), and resource sharing (eg, coalitions, CACFP sponsors). The CACFP state directors reported that existing and new partnerships between CACFP state agencies and external entities successfully facilitated feeding young children in ECE during the COVID-19 pandemic. States may consider developing a road map to proactively explore potential partners in their state to meet specific needs such as accessibility, availability, and affordability for feeding young children in ECE. Background: Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) experience eating, drinking and swallowing problems, such as chewing problems, choking, gagging, coughing during eating, aspiration and rumination syndrome, which may lead to poor nutritional status. This study aimed to determine the relationship between IDD levels, eating, drinking and swallowing problems and nutritional status in adults with IDDs. Methods: The sample consisted of 71 participants (37 men and 34 women) with a mean age of 22.5 ± 7 years (range 18–60 years). Professionals classified intellectual disability as mild, moderate or severe. The Screening Tool of Feeding Problems scale was applied to the caregivers of adults with IDDs to identify eating, drinking and swallowing problems. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24‐h dietary recall and a food and nutrition photograph catalogue. The researchers measured body weight, height and middle upper arm circumference. Body mass index was calculated. Four body mass index categories were determined: underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5–24.9 kg/m2), overweight (25.0–29.9 kg/m2) and obese (≥30 kg/m2). Chi‐squared tests were used to detect the relationship between IDD levels and eating and drinking problems, and analysis of variance tests were conducted to detect the relationship between IDD levels with anthropometric measurements and dietary intake. Results: Participants had mild (42.3%; n = 30), moderate (29.6%; n = 21) or severe IDD (28.2%; n = 20). They were underweight (12.7%; n = 9), normal weight (59.2%; n = 42) or overweight and/or obese (28.2%; n = 20). Participants with severe IDD had significantly higher Screening Tool of Feeding Problems 'nutrition‐related behaviour' and 'eating and drinking skill deficit problem' sub‐scale scores than those with mild IDD. However, the groups had no significant difference in 'food refusal and selectivity' sub‐scale scores. Participants with severe IDD also had anorexia prevalence similar to those with mild IDD. The groups did not significantly differ in anthropometric measurements, daily energy intake and macronutrient and micronutrient intake. Conclusions: While adults with severe IDD had more eating and drinking skill deficits (e.g. chewing problems and independent eating difficulties) and nutrition‐related behaviour problems than those with mild IDD, the eating, drinking and swallowing problems, which may critically affect their food intake, were similar to adults with mild IDD. The anthropometric measurements and energy and nutrient intakes of adults with severe IDD were not significantly different from those with mild IDD consistently. Background: The impact of treatments on completely edentulous individuals on masticatory performance (MP), oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL), nutritional status (NS) and socio‐economic profile (SP) is unclear in the literature. Objective: To compare the MP, OHRQoL, NS and SP of totally edentulous elderly users of bimaxillary complete dentures (CD) and users of lower implant‐supported fixed complete dentures (IFCD). Methods: Forty participants were allocated into groups according to rehabilitation treatment (n = 20): bimaxillary CD (G1) and lower IFCD, and upper CD (G2). The evaluation of MP used almonds by the method of sieves. Four questionnaires (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index–GOHAI and Oral Health Impact Profile Edent–OHIP‐Edent, Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria–ABEP and Mini Nutritional Assessment‐MNA) were applied to assess the OHRQoL, SP and NS of the elderly, respectively. After evaluating the statistical assumptions, the Mann–Whitney (α =.05) test was applied to compare the groups regarding MP, OHRQoL, NS and SP. Spearman's correlation (α =.05) was performed to verify the correlation between the MP, the OHRQoL and the NS of the participants. Results: G2 showed better MP (p <.05) in all masticatory cycles, OHRQoL (p <.05) and NS than the G1. However, the participants' self‐perception of oral health did not differ between groups (p <.05). A moderate negative correlation was found between MP and OHRQoL for 40 masticatory cycles (r2 = −0.513; p =.001). Conclusion: Individuals rehabilitated with IFCD had a higher average monthly family income and achieved superior behaviour in MP and OHRQoL, in addition to lower risks of malnutrition when compared to individuals using bimaxillary CD. Background: Orofacial function is believed to influence an individual's diet. knowledge on appetite and enjoyment of eating in orofacially impaired individuals is scarce. Objective: We aimed to explore potential associations between impaired orofacial function, that is, orofacial pain, jaw function limitation and xerostomia, respectively, and diet, appetite, taste perception, as well as the enjoyment of eating. Methods: An online questionnaire was shared among Aarhus University's dental patients and through social media. A convenience sample of 351 individuals responded (97 men, 254 women, aged 18–86 years). Participants were divided into groups with and without orofacial pain or xerostomia based on responses. Questions about food intake, appetite, meal‐related well‐being and oral/general health were included. Data were analysed using Mann Whitney U tests, Spearman's correlation, Chi‐square tests, and t‐tests. Results: Participants with (n = 123) and without (n = 228) orofacial pain differed significantly regarding age, perceived oral/general health, frequency of consumption of for example cooked vegetables and raw whole fruit, perception of sourness, chewiness, and nausea/pain when eating (p ≤.031). Participants with (n = 101) and without (n = 250) xerostomia differed significantly regarding perceived oral/general health, intake of prepared fruit, alcohol, ice cream/mousse/pudding, general appetite, intake of breakfast and liquid snacks, nausea/pain when eating, taste and chewiness of food (p ≤.038). Conclusion: Diet, appetite, taste and sensory perception, as well as enjoyment of eating of individuals reporting orofacial pain and/or xerostomia differed slightly to that of individuals free of such symptoms. However, due to the explorative nature of this study, the results should be interpreted with caution pending further research on potential long‐term effects on nutritional status and well‐being. The association of low prognostic nutritional index (PNI) with adverse outcomes remains conflicting in heart failure patients. To address these knowledge gaps, we performed this meta-analysis to investigate the predictive value of PNI in patients with heart failure (HF). PubMed and Embase databases were comprehensively searched until January 19, 2023, to identify studies that evaluated the predictive role of PNI in HF patients. Outcomes of interest included all-cause mortality and/or combined endpoint of mortality and re-hospitalization. Twelve studies involving 9365 patients with HF were included and analyzed. Comparison of the lowest with the highest PNI, the pooled multivariate adjusted risk ratio (RR) was 1.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40-2.30) and 2.67 (95% CI 1.92-3.71) for long-term all-cause mortality and combined endpoint of mortality and re-hospitalization, respectively. Furthermore, per unit reduction in PNI was associated with 8% higher risk of all-cause mortality. However, there was no clear association of low PNI with in-hospital mortality. Low PNI may be an independent predictor of long-term all-cause mortality and re-hospitalization in patients with HF. Blood cell biomarkers, such as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), have been recently used as prognostic markers in tumors. In this study, we investigated the association between NLR and PLR with sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, and quality of life factors of hospitalized women with non-metastatic breast cancer. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at a reference center for oncological treatment in Southeast Brazil. Female participants aged over 18 years, with a histopathological diagnosis of stage I, II or III breast cancer, in any phase of antineoplastic treatment, were included. Our study revealed a high risk for participants, with high mean values of NLR and PLR, indicating low antitumor activity and worse prognosis. The binary logistic regression model showed that there was a significant association of the NLR marker and marital status (OR = 3.1; 95%CI = 1.06-8.57; p = 0.03) and, in relation to PLR, a trend was shown for a higher chance in women of black ethnicity to have increased PLR compared to white women (OR = 4.13; 95%CI = 0.96-17.70; p = 0.05). However, the inflammatory markers (NLR and PLR) did not show any significant association with nutritional factors. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the role of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and phase angle measurement in assessing malnutrition in head and neck (n = 37) and brain (n = 63) tumor patients received radiotherapy. Common nutritional screening and assessment tests were used to identify malnutrition in the patients. Each patient underwent these tests once, along with phase angle measurement. Additionally, inflammation parameters, including neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic inflammatory index (SII), were calculated. All study results were correlated with the phase angle cutoff point of 5.72°. The phase angle demonstrated significant correlations with subjective global assessment (SGA), mini nutritional assessment (MNA) scores, BIA parameters, nutritional index, NLR, and SII (p < 0.05). Moreover, in head and neck tumor patients, those with higher standardized phase angle values exhibited significantly better two-year overall survival (32.1% vs. 87.5%, p = 0.006). The phase angle measurement is a convenient, noninvasive, and reproducible method that can complement existing tools for assessing malnutrition risk in radiotherapy patients. The significant correlations observed between the phase angle and various nutritional, inflammation markers and prognosis highlight its potential utility. This study identified the relationship between energy balance and some blood metabolites in primiparous dairy cows with different calving conception interval. Twenty primiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were grouped according to the interval (days) from calving to conception into early-conception (early-c; <100 days), mid-conception group (mid-c; 100 -- 150 days) or late-conception (late-c; >150 days) group; and evaluated on day -7 prior to parturition, and days 28, 56 and 90 postpartum. All groups presented positive energy balance, serum concentrations of HDL, urea-N and progesterone with no difference on days 28 and 56 of lactation. On day 90 of lactation all the cows presented negative energy balance; however, the early-c group presented a less intense (P < 0.05) net energy balance (-1.09 versus -2.15 and -1.86 Mcal/day), lower concentrations of serum urea-N (3.28 versus 4.22 and 4.88 mg/dL) and HDL cholesterol (0.84 versus 1.59 and 1.46 mmol/L) and greater serum concentration of progesterone (8.13 versus 4.54 and 1.83 ng/mL) than cows of mid-c and late-c groups, respectively. In conclusion, different from those usually observed for multiparous dairy cows, the energy balance during the first weeks of lactation was not a determining factor affecting the calving conception interval of primiparous dairy cows in the present study. Instead, the nutritional status and the serum concentration of urea-N and progesterone at a later stage, after 56 days of lactation, suggest having a role in delaying these cows' pregnant status. This study aimed to ascertain the effects of health education combined with nutrition support nursing on the nutritional status and quality of life of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. A clinical study was conducted. Sixty-four patients with tuberculosis were selected as the study participants and divided into control and observation groups (n = 32). Both groups received antituberculosis drugs. The control group received standard nursing care, while the observation group received health education in conjunction with nutrition support nursing. After 3 months of intervention, the total effective treatment rate and adherence were compared. Before and after the intervention, the albumin (ALB), prealbumin (PA), transferrin (TF), and hemoglobin (Hb) level, body mass index (BMI), and Short Form-36 (SF-36) scores were compared. The occurrence of adverse reactions during intervention was recorded. Following the intervention, the observation group exhibited a higher treatment total effective rate and increased levels of ALB, PA, TF, Hb, and BMI compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The observation group demonstrated a higher total adherence rate and a lower incidence of adverse reactions compared with the control group (p < 0.05); the SF-36 score of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). The integration of health education and nutrition support nursing can effectively enhance the therapeutic outcomes of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. This approach not only improves their nutritional status, treatment adherence, and quality of life, but also reduces the incidence of adverse reactions. Mango is the fruit most exported by Brazil, with a significant increase in cultivated area in recent years. However, the orchards have been made up of seedlings produced by the grafting process, but without identifying the most suitable rootstock for each cultivar, which affects the competitiveness of mango farming, since the rootstock affects, among other factors, the growth and nutrient absorption from the canopy cultivar. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and mineral nutrition of 'Palmer,' 'Tommy Atkins,' 'Kent' and 'Keitt' mango seedlings grafted onto the polyembryonic rootstocks Capucho, Coquinho and Espada. The experiment was carried out between October 2019 and May 2020 at the Fruit Growing Nursery of the Agricultural Sciences Campus of the Federal University of Vale do São Francisco (UNIVASF), in Petrolina-PE, in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to three polyembryonic rootstocks (Espada, Capucho and Coquinho) and four crown cultivars ('Palmer,' 'Keitt,' 'Kent' and 'Tommy Atkins'), with five replications of ten plants each. Leaf contents of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca), micronutrients (Cu and Fe) and silicon depend on the scion (Tommy Atkins, Palmer, Keitt and Kent) x rootstock (Espada, Capucho and Conquinho) combination. The leaf contents of S, Mg, B, Mn and Mo in the scion are affected by the rootstock adopted for mango propagation In general, for macro and micronutrient absorption purposes, the sword rootstock and the 'Keitt' cultivar are the best combination for most of the variables analyzed in the research. Subjects and Methods. A case-control study included 140 parasitic infected children and one hundred age- and sex-matched controls. Anthropometric measures were evaluated using specific Egyptian growth charts. Parasites were detected in stool specimens using standard microscopic methods. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for the detection of serum iron, zinc, and selenium. To examine the statistical relationship between intestinal parasitic infection and the relevant variables (gender, residence, socioeconomic status, and age group), the nonparametric chi-square ( χ 2 ) test was used. Data were analyzed statistically using SPSS version 25. Results. Parasitic infected children showed a statistically significant low weight for age, height for age, and BMI. Serum iron, zinc, and selenium were significantly lower in parasitic infected children than controls. Serum iron, zinc, and selenium have significant positive correlations with weight, height, and BMI, respectively. Conclusion. Maternal malnutrition plays a crucial role in functional development, resulting in behavioral, cognitive, and metabolic abnormalities and disturbances. "Cafeteria diet" has been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and other metabolic disruptions in the mammalian lifespan. However, there are very few reports about the effect of intrauterine and early postnatal malnutrition on the circadian rhythm programming of energy metabolites. In mammals, circadian rhythm central control is fundamental for correct interaction with the environment and physiological regulation. Exposure to malnutrition during development imprints metabolic programming throughout life on the central nervous system and peripheral systems. Lifespan studies exploring the effect of high fat/low protein diet administered during critical periods of development are scarce. The present study explored the effect of intrauterine and perinatal malnutrition induced by a high fat/low protein diet (Cafeteria Diet) on circadian and peripheral oscillators controlling glucose, insulin, and triglycerides in rats at 40 and 90 days of age. We evaluated plasma glucose and triglyceride levels in 6 Zeitgeber times, in addition to an intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IpTGT) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) at two time-points over 24h. Our results show that offspring of malnourished dams fed cafeteria diet present alterations in circadian rhythmicity of glucose and triglycerides associated with a change in glucose tolerance and insulin sensibility differentially regulated at the development stage and time of day. Background: Nutritional status and physical activity are important factors for adolescent health. These factors may vary by the place of residence. This study aims to assess the nutritional status and physical activity levels, as well as their variations by the place of residence. Methods: The sample consisted of 1503 adolescents (46.3% male; 53.7% female), with a mean age of 15.7 ± 0.7 years. Nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR), and Body Fat Percentage (BF). Physical activity levels were assessed using the PAQ-C questionnaire. Differences in nutritional status among adolescents living in urban and rural areas were analyzed using Chi-square test (p ≤ 0.05), while differences in physical activity levels were analyzed using an independent samples t-test (p ≤ 0.05). Results: In terms of BMI, 14.7% of males were overweight and 10.1% were obese, while 12% of female adolescents were overweight and 3.1% were obese. There were no differences in nutritional status among adolescents living in urban and rural areas (BMI, WHtR, BF). Male adolescents in rural areas had significantly higher physical activity levels compared to urban areas (p = 0.032). They showed higher activity scores during a spare time (p = 0.002), physical education classes (p = 0.002), little breaks (p = 0.007), and lunchtime (p = 0.034). Female adolescents showed significance only in spare time activity (p = 0.020). Conclusion: The differences in nutritional status among adolescents living in urban and rural areas were not found. However, male adolescents living in urban areas showed lower physical activity levels than their rural counterparts. Strategies should be implemented to promote physical activity among adolescents in urban areas, and attention should be given to the further urbanization process to create improved conditions for engaging in physical activity. When pregnancy occur among teenagers; there is a competition for nutrients between the still-growing adolescent mother and her fetus. Pregnant adolescents' nutrition issues are not addressed well and changes are too slow in Ethiopia. This study aimed to study, nutrition knowledge, nutritional status and associated factors among pregnant adolescents in West Arsi , central Ethiopia. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 426 pregnant adolescents between January 1 and January 25, 2023. Data were collected using kobo collect and analyzed using SPSS version 25. We performed linear regression to identify independent predictors of nutritional status and multivariable logistic regression analyses to identify nutritional knowledge. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals were estimated to show the strength of the association. Magnitude of good nutrition knowledge was 23.7%, 95% CI (21.4–25.3%), and the odds of having good nutrition knowledge was 7.5 times higher among participants whose education level was above college compared with illiterate participants [(AOR = 7.5, 95% CI = (5.27–9.38)],the odds of having good nutrition knowledge was 8 times higher among adolescent who had ANC visits, [(AOR = 8, 95% CI = (3.63–13.85)], and the odds of having good nutrition knowledge was 5 times higher among adolescents who received nutrition education [(AOR = 5, 95% CI = (3.67- 13.53)]. Receiving nutrition education (β = 0.25, P = 0.002) and good nutrition knowledge (β = 0.08, P < 0.001) were positively associated with nutritional status; however, food insecurity (β = − 0.93, P < 0.001) was negatively associated with nutritional status. The nutrition knowledge of pregnant adolescents was suboptimal; educational status, ANC visits and nutrition education were associated with good nutrition knowledge, whereas food insecurity, low nutrition knowledge, and not receiving nutrition education were predictors of poor nutritional status. Background. To investigate the effectiveness of prehabilitation in improving physical and nutritional status in patients undergoing gastric cancer resection. Methods. A total of 136 locally advanced gastric cancer patients who planned to undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) plus transabdominal radical surgery were involved. All participants were divided into the prehabilitation group and the control group using the odd-even method, with 68 cases in each group. Intervention consisted of preoperative exercise and nutrition optimization. Participants were adults awaiting elective gastric resection for cancer. The primary outcomes were changes in functional ability and nutritional status, as measured by relative changes in 6 minute walking distance (6MWD) and scores on the albumin and prealbumin. Preoperative (end of the prehabilitation period) and postoperative (from 4 to 6 weeks after surgery) data were compared between the two groups. Results. All 136 patients were randomized in this study. Compared with the control group, the prehabilitation group exhibited improved functional capacity both before surgery (6MWD change) and after surgery. Furthermore, it demonstrated significantly higher levels of albumin and prealbumin before and after surgery than the control group. Conclusion. Prehabilitation in gastric cancer patients can improve preoperative functional capacity and nutritional status. Background: Malnutrition is a clinical condition that affects all age groups, and it remains a major public health threat in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, this research aimed to investigate the barriers and facilitators of treating severe acute malnutrition at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Bahir Dar City, North West Ethiopia. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted from February to April 2021. The final sample size taken was fifteen based on data saturation. In-depth and key informant interviews were conducted with nine caregivers, three healthcare workers, and three healthcare managers supported by observation. A criterion-based, heterogeneous purposive sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Each interview was audio-taped to ensure data quality. Thematic analysis was done to analyze the data using Atlas. ti version 7 software. Results: Two major themes and six sub-themes emerged. Barriers related to severe acute malnutrition management include subthemes on socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions, perceived causes of severe acute malnutrition and its management, and the healthcare context. Facilitators of severe acute malnutrition management include severe acute malnutrition identification, service delivery, and being a member of community-based health insurance. Conclusions: Effective management of severe acute malnutrition was affected by a multiplicity of factors. The results reaffirm how socioeconomic and sociocultural conditions, perceived causes of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and its management and the health care context were the major barriers, while able to identifying severe acute malnutrition, service delivery, and is a member of community-based health insurance were the major facilitators for SAM management. Background: Limited evidence is available that focuses on beans within American dietary patterns and health. The purpose of this study was to identify commonly consumed adult dietary patterns that included beans and compare shortfall nutrient intakes and diet quality, relative to adults whose typical dietary pattern did not include beans. Methods: The analyses used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001–2018. Cluster analysis was used to identify bean patterns of consumption, while the USDA food coding system defined daily beans consumed. Five bean dietary patterns of consumption were identified, of which four patterns included both canned beans and dry beans, while one pattern had no bean consumption. Bean consumption was defined as those consuming kidney beans, black beans, chickpeas, and/or pinto beans. Results: Adults consuming Bean Dietary Patterns 1, 2, 3 and 4 had significantly higher diet quality scores (as assessed by USDA's Healthy Eating Index-2015) compared to the no-bean pattern (61.2 ± 0.5, 58.9 ± 0.5, 55.2 ± 0.4 and 56.5 ± 0.8 vs 48.8 ± 0.2 p's < 0.0001). Bean consumers also had significantly higher intakes of several shortfall nutrients (choline, alpha-linolenic acid, folate, iron, magnesium and vitamin E) relative to non-consumers of beans. Similarly, intake of dietary fiber, potassium and calcium, all nutrients of public health concern were significantly higher in bean patterns compared to no-beans. Bean Dietary Pattern 1 (~ 13.5% of total daily kcal from beans or ~ 2 servings of beans/day) and 2 (~ 9.5% of total daily kcal from beans or ~ 1.7 servings of beans/day) were significantly associated with lower BMI, decreased body weight and improved waist circumference relative to no-beans. Conclusions: Dietary patterns that are rich in canned and dry beans were associated with significantly higher diet quality scores and greater intake of shortfall nutrients, including nutrients of public health concern. Bean dietary patterns were also associated with improved weight-related outcomes. Background: Multidimensional factors such as socioeconomic or environmental factors influence malnutrition. Several studies have strongly linked malnutrition to poverty. Some international studies point to the worse nutritional status of urban slum children than rural children. Limited data is available regarding the nutritional status of slum children in Karachi. This study aimed to determine characteristics of malnourished children in an urban squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: A case- control study was carried out at the primary healthcare center of a squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan. All children under five years of age visiting the primary healthcare center were recruited consecutively. Cases were defined as children with z scores < -2 SD of WHO reference measurements of WFA, HFA, WFH and OFC. The controls were similar in terms of age group but had z scores between − 2SD and + 2SD. A self- structured risk factor questionnaire that included information about sociodemographic, economic and environmental factors as well as child- related characteristics was researcher administered via face-to-face interviews with the mothers of children. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were calculated with 95% confidence interval. Results: A total of 280 participants including 140 cases and 140 controls participated in the study. A larger proportion of the sample originated from individuals with low household income. After adjusting for the confounders, childhood malnutrition was significantly associated with a low education level of father (aOR 4.86, 95% CI 2.23–10.60), a monthly income less than 25,000 PKR (89 USD) per month (aOR 7.13, 95% CI 1.67–30.54), pour pit latrine type of toilet (aOR 4.41, 95% CI 2.67–7.3), less than six months of exclusive breast feeding (aOR 3.578, CI 1.58–8.08), inappropriate weaning age (aOR 3.71, 95% CI 1.53-9). Conclusion: Malnutrition in children under five years of age in the community is associated with low family income, low paternal education, poor toilet facilities, lack of exclusive breastfeeding and inappropriate weaning age. The implementation of poverty reduction programs, sanitation provision at affordable rates, community-based breast feeding and weaning education intervention are urgently required to efficiently improve children's nutritional status. Simple Summary: Aside from a decreased quality of life, patients with esophagogastric tumors often suffer from difficulties with eating that impact nutritional status. Both the presence of cancer and the impacted nutritional status can also reduce muscle mass. All of this can impact treatment decisions: a patient with low muscle mass and low caloric impact might have a lower tolerance for chemotherapy or other treatment courses. However, treating physicians do not always have immediate access to current data on muscle mass and nutritional status. If there was a correlation between quality of life and these parameters, this might allow for the estimation of real-time muscle mass and suggest further controlled studies. (1) Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) gains importance as novel treatment options for individuals with esophagogastric tumors to improve long-term survival. Impaired HRQoL has been shown to be a predictor of overall survival. Sarcopenia is a known prognostic factor for postoperative complications. As the regular control of sarcopenia through CT scans might not always be possible and HRQoL and nutritional scores are easier to obtain, this study aimed to assess the relationship between nutritional scores, HRQoL and skeletal muscle mass in patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract. (2) Methods: Eighty patients presenting with tumors of the upper GI tract were included and asked to fill out the standardized HRQoL questionnaire, EORTC's QLQ-C30. Nutritional status was assessed using the MNA, MUST and NRS 2002 scores. Sarcopenia was determined semi-automatically based on the skeletal muscle index at the L3 vertebrae level in staging CT scans. (3) Results: In chemo-naïve patients, HRQoL summary scores correlated significantly with nutritional scores and SMI. SMI and HRQoL prior to neoadjuvant therapy correlated significantly with SMI after treatment. (4) Conclusions: HRQoL is a helpful tool for assessing patients' overall constitution. Bioenergetic constraints are the ultimate determinant of the timing of reproduction, and seasonal breeding is consequently a widely observed trait. Consistent with this, attention has focused on plasticity in reproductive phenology conceptualized as a response to concomitant advances in the phenology of the environmental energy supply caused by climate change. Few studies, however, have directly compared timing of reproduction with energetic status in free-living wild animals. Here we demonstrate that neither body mass nor adiposity are strong proximate predictors of date of conception in wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus). Weak coupling between energetic status and the phenology of reproduction accounts for the increasing discrepancy between the phenology of forage (energy supply) and the phenology of reproduction (energy demand) observed across the last 2–4 decades in two populations of this species. The results emphasise that phenological plasticity is not a passive response to changes in energy supply but derives from the way in which environmental factors interact with the core control mechanisms that govern timing. The current decline in freshwater resources presents a significant global challenge to crop production, a situation expected to intensify with ongoing climate change. This underscores the need for extensive research to enhance crop yields under drought conditions, a priority for scientists given its vital role in global food security. Our study explores the effects of using humic and chitosan treatments to alleviate drought stress during critical growth phases and their impact on crop yield and water efficiency. We employed four different irrigation strategies: full irrigation, 70% irrigation at the early vine development stage, 70% irrigation during the storage root bulking stage, and 85% irrigation across both stages, complemented by full irrigation in other periods. The plants received either humic treatments through foliar spray or soil application, or chitosan foliar applications, with tap water serving as a control. Our findings highlight that the early vine development stage is particularly vulnerable to drought, with a 42.0% decrease in yield observed under such conditions. In normal growth scenarios, foliar application of humic substances significantly improved growth parameters, resulting in a substantial increase in yield and water efficiency by 66.9% and 68.4%, respectively, compared to the control treatment under full irrigation. For sweet potatoes irrigated with 70% water at the storage root bulking stage, ground application of humic substances outperformed both foliar applications of chitosan and humic in terms of yield results. The highest tuber yield and water efficiency were attained by combining chitosan and humic ground applications, regardless of whether 70% irrigation was used at the storage root bulking stage or 85% irrigation during both the early vine development and storage root bulking stages. Background: The impact of access to improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and health education on large-scale deworming programs aimed at controlling soil-transmitted helminth (STH) and schistosome (SCH) infections has not been well studied. We assessed the additional impact of improved WASH infrastructure and health education at schools on STH and SCH infections in Ethiopia. Methods: The study used a quasi-experimental design under which 30 schools were assigned to either an intervention (15 schools) or control (15 schools) arm. Both arms received a standard deworming treatment and lunch. In the intervention arm, improved WASH and health education were provided. At three consecutive time points (baseline in 2013, 2014 and 2015), the prevalence and intensity of STH and SCH infections and the nutritional status [hemoglobin concentrations and physical growth (height and weight)] were determined. To verify whether interventions were successfully implemented, the WASH status at school and the student knowledge, attitudes and practices related to WASH (WASH-KAP) were recorded. Differences in metrics between arms at baseline (2013) and follow-up (2015) were assessed both within and between the arms. Results: A significant increase in scores for both the school WASH and student KAP was found in the intervention arm, indicating successful implementation of the intervention. The prevalence of any STH infection was significantly reduced in the intervention arm but not in the control arm (F = 4.486, p = 0.034). There was a significantly greater reduction in the intensity of infection of hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides compared to baseline in both arms. The intervention did not affect school children's height-for-age z-score (intervention arm * time coef = 0.12, p = 0.400) and body mass index-for-age z-scores (intervention * time coef = − 0.06, p = 0.526). Hemoglobin concentrations increased significantly more in the control than the intervention arm (coef = − 0.16, p = 0.006). Conclusions: Although the intervention did increase school WASH and student WASH-KAP, our study found poor evidence of the additional benefit of improved WASH and health education to deworming and school food programs on parasite re-infection and the health outcomes of children. Background: Globally, 144 million children under 5 years are undernourished and 250 million do not meet their developmental potential. Multi-input interventions, such as bundled nutrition and parenting interventions, are designed to mitigate risks for multiple child outcomes. There is limited evidence that bundled interventions have additive benefits to nutrition, growth, or development outcomes. These outcomes share common risks; therefore, designing interventions to tackle these risks using a common theory of change may optimize effectiveness. Emerging evidence suggests explicit engagement of fathers may benefit child outcomes, but few trials have tested this or included data collected from fathers. Methods: Engaging Fathers for Effective Child Nutrition and Development in Tanzania (EFFECTS) is a community-based cluster-randomized controlled trial that will be implemented in the rural Mara Region, Tanzania. The trial aims (1) to test a bundled nutrition and parenting program delivered to mothers' groups, with or without fathers' groups, over 12 months on child and caregiving outcomes compared to a nutrition program alone, and (2) to test nutrition or bundled nutrition and parenting programs delivered to mothers' and fathers' groups over 12 months on child and caregiving outcomes compared to programs delivered to mothers alone. The trial comprises five arms: (1) mothers' groups receiving a nutrition program, (2) mothers' groups receiving a bundled nutrition and parenting program, (3) mothers' and fathers' groups receiving a nutrition program, (4) mothers' and fathers' groups receiving a bundled nutrition and parenting program, and (5) control receiving standard of care health services. The primary outcomes are child dietary diversity and early child development (mental and motor development). Parents with a child under 18 months will be enrolled in peer groups and receive twice monthly intervention by trained community health workers. Data will be collected from mothers, fathers, and children at baseline (pre-intervention), midline, and endline (post-intervention). Discussion: EFFECTS will generate evidence on the effects of bundled nutrition and parenting interventions on child nutrition, growth, and development outcomes; determine the benefits of engaging fathers on child, caregiving, and caregiver outcomes; and investigate common and unique pathways between treatments and child outcomes. PURPOSE: Ruxolitinib improves splenomegaly and disease-related symptoms in most patients with myelofibrosis (MF), and it has been associated with a survival benefit in higher-risk patients with splenomegaly. Spleen volume reduction has been associated with a survival benefit in ruxolitinib-treated patients; however, its use as a surrogate is limited. We hypothesized that an anti-inflammatory response to ruxolitinib would correlate with improved patient outcomes. METHODS: We interrogated serum albumin, an acute phase reactant and marker of nutritional status in 590 patients with MF and analyzed differential trajectories of albumin on the basis of ruxolitinib treatment. Additionally, we assessed the prognostic role of baseline albumin and change in albumin. RESULTS: We found that serum albumin levels tend to decrease in patients with MF; however, this tendency is abrogated by ruxolitinib treatment. To that end, baseline serum albumin level correlates with overall survival (OS) in patients with MF, independent of the variables that comprise the dynamic international prognostic scoring system; however, this correlation is limited to ruxolitinib-naïve patients. In ruxolitinib-treated patients, the change in serum albumin after ruxolitinib treatment, rather than the baseline value, is associated with improved OS, a finding not seen in ruxolitinib-naïve patients. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that serum albumin, a ubiquitously available laboratory value, has specific relevance in patients with MF and reflects therapeutic response to ruxolitinib. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of sweet basil leaf powder as a natural source of iron for the treatment of anemia in adolescent girls. Purposive sampling technique of two‐stage sampling; part of the nonprobability sampling approach. Out of 2400 approached adolescent girls, 1645 agreed to participate and their nutritional status was assessed. Of these, 89.95% had clinical signs and symptoms of anemia, and 59.79% were found to be anemic based on Hb levels. From the anemic group, 65.18% were randomly selected to receive either B0 (Control), B1 (12.699 g FeSO4.7H2O/100 g), and B3 (16 g SBLP/100 g) cookies for 4 months. At the end of the intervention, the assessment of nutritional status, complete blood count, serum iron, serum ferritin, serum total iron‐binding capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation was explored. Hematological parameters such as Hb, Hct, TIBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, serum iron, and serum ferritin were significant (p ≤ .05). The result showed that the serum Fe was highest in group B3 while a significant decline was noted for group B0. Serum ferritin for B1 was better than B3. The entire treatment for transferrin saturation showed a highly significant increasing trend in B3 and B1, regardless of the control. TIBC levels raised in the control group while in all other treatments, it declined. Nitrogen (N) availability affects the boron (B) and chloride (Cl) concentrations in potato plants. The objective of our study was to evaluate: 1) the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilization on boron (B) and chloride (Cl) concentration in leaves and tubers, yield and tuber quality; and 2) the use of nitrogen nutrition index in shoot biomass (NNIsh) and in the tuber at harvest (NNItH) to estimate B and Cl nutrition status. Two trials were carried out (2009/10 and 2010/11). At each year, a split-plot randomized complete blotuber B uptakeck design with three replications was used. The main plot was the N rate applied at planting (0 or 50 kg N ha−1), and the subplots were the N rate applied at tuber initiation (0, 50 or 100 kg N ha−1). Our results showed that leaf B concentration and yield increased with N availability (13% and 5%, respectively). While leaf and tuber Cl concentration and DM decreased with N availability (16%, 18% and 3%, respectively). Moreover, the NNIsh was related to the leaf B and Cl concentration and relative yield. The NNItH was also closely related to dry matter (DM), B and Cl concentrations in tubers at harvest. This study demonstrated that N fertilization affected the concentration of B and Cl in leaf and tuber and that NNIsh and NNItH estimated the nutritional status of anionic micronutrients. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and continuing emergence of viral mutants, there has been a lack of effective treatment methods. Zinc maintains immune function, with direct and indirect antiviral activities. Zinc nutritional status is a critical factor in antiviral immune responses. Importantly, COVID-19 and zinc deficiency overlap in high-risk population. Hence, the potential effect of zinc as a preventive and adjunct therapy for COVID-19 is intriguing. Here, this review summarizes the immune and antiviral function of zinc, the relationship between zinc levels, susceptibility, and severity of COVID-19, and the effect of zinc supplementation on COVID-19. Existing studies have confirmed that zinc deficiency was associated with COVID-19 susceptibility and severity. Zinc supplementation plays a potentially protective role in enhancing immunity, decreasing susceptibility, shortening illness duration, and reducing the severity of COVID-19. We recommend that zinc levels should be monitored, particularly in COVID-19 patients, and zinc as a preventive and adjunct therapy for COVID-19 should be considered for groups at risk of zinc deficiency to reduce susceptibility and disease severity.
