High‐quality atmospheric CO2 measurements are sparse in Amazonia, but can provide critical insights into the spatial and temporal variability of sources and sinks of CO2. In this study, we present the first 6 years (2014–2019) of continuous, high‐precision measurements of atmospheric CO2 at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO, 2.1°S, 58.9°W). After subtracting the simulated background concentrations from our observational record, we define a CO2 regional signal (ΔCO2obs) that has a marked seasonal cycle with an amplitude of about 4 ppm. At both seasonal and inter‐annual scales, we find differences in phase between ΔCO2obs and the local eddy covariance net ecosystem exchange (EC‐NEE), which is interpreted as an indicator of a decoupling between local and non‐local drivers of ΔCO2obs. In addition, we present how the 2015–2016 El Niño‐induced drought was captured by our atmospheric record as a positive 2σ anomaly in both the wet and dry season of 2016. Furthermore, we analyzed the observed seasonal cycle and inter‐annual variability of ΔCO2obs together with net ecosystem exchange (NEE) using a suite of modeled flux products representing biospheric and aquatic CO2 exchange. We use both non‐optimized and optimized (i.e., resulting from atmospheric inverse modeling) NEE fluxes as input in an atmospheric transport model (STILT). The observed shape and amplitude of the seasonal cycle was captured neither by the simulations using the optimized fluxes nor by those using the diagnostic Vegetation and Photosynthesis Respiration Model (VPRM). We show that including the contribution of CO2 from river evasion improves the simulated shape (not the magnitude) of the seasonal cycle when using a data‐driven non‐optimized NEE product (FLUXCOM). The simulated contribution from river evasion was found to be 25% of the seasonal cycle amplitude. Estimating the grassland carbon budget is critically important for ensuring that grassland resources are used sustainably. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of the carbon budget and the response to grazing have not yet been characterized in Qinghai grasslands. Here, we estimated the gross primary productivity (GPP) and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in Qinghai grasslands using the improved Biome-BGCMuSo model to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of the carbon budget and the response to grazing in this region from 1979 to 2018. The GPP of Qinghai grasslands fluctuated during the study period, with an average annual value of 118.78 gC/m2. The NEE of Qinghai grasslands fluctuated from 1979 to 2018, with an average value of −5.16 gC/m2. After 2,000, GPP increased, and NEE decreased in a fluctuating manner. There were clear regional differences in GPP and NEE. GPP was low in most areas of Qinghai, and GPP was high in eastern and southern Qinghai. The southern, southeastern, and northeastern parts of Qinghai were mainly carbon sinks, and the northwestern part of Qinghai and the region between the southeastern and northeastern parts of Qinghai were mainly carbon sources. Grazing generally decreased GPP and increased NEE in Qinghai grasslands from 1979 to 2018. There was spatial heterogeneity in the effect of grazing on GPP and NEE. Under grazing, GPP and NEE were significantly decreased mainly in eastern Qinghai, and GPP and NEE were significantly increased mainly in southern and eastern Qinghai. NEE was most affected by grazing in eastern Qinghai. The results of this study aid our understanding of the mechanism driving variation in the grassland carbon budget and provide new data that could be used to support local grassland management. Bioenergy has been identified as a key component of climate change mitigation. Therefore, quantifying the net carbon balance of bioenergy feedstocks is crucial for accurate projections of climate mitigation benefits. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) has many characteristics of an ideal bioenergy crop with high yields, low maintenance, and deep roots with potential for belowground carbon sequestration. However, the assessments of net annual carbon exchange between switchgrass fields and the atmosphere are rare. Here we present observations of net carbon fluxes in a minimally managed switchgrass field in Virginia (Ameriflux site US‐SB2) over 5 years (3–7 years since establishment). Average annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon was near zero (60 g C m−2 year−1) but the net ecosystem carbon balance that includes harvested carbon (HC) was a net source of carbon to the atmosphere (313 g C m−2 year−1). The field alternated between a large and small source of carbon annually, with the interannual variability most strongly correlated with the day of the last frost and the interaction of temperature and precipitation. Overall, the consistent source of carbon to the atmosphere at US‐SB2 differs substantially from other eddy covariance studies that report switchgrass fields to be either neutral or a sink of carbon when accounting for both NEE and HC. This study illustrates that predictions of net carbon climate benefits from bioenergy crops cannot assume that the ecosystem will be a net sink of carbon from the atmosphere. Background climate, management, and land‐use history may determine whether widespread deployment of switchgrass as a bioenergy feedstock results in realized climate change mitigation. The boreal biome plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. However, current estimates of its sink‐source strength and responses to changes in climate are primarily derived from models and thus remain uncertain. A major challenge is the validation of these models at a regional scale since empirical flux estimates are typically confined to ecosystem or continental scales. The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS)‐Svartberget atmospheric station (SVB) provides observations including tall tower eddy covariance (EC) and atmospheric concentration measurements that can contribute to such validation in Northern Sweden. Thus, the overall aim of this study was to quantify the carbon balance in Northern Sweden region by integrating land‐atmosphere fluxes and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. There were three specific objectives. First, to compare flux estimates from four models (VPRM, LPJ‐GUESS, ORCHIDEE, and SiBCASA) to tall tower EC measurements at SVB during the years 2016–2018. Second to assess the fluxes' impact on atmospheric CO2 concentrations using a regional transport model. Third, to assess the impact of the drought in 2018. The comparison of estimated concentrations with ICOS observations helped the evaluation of the models' regional scale performance. Both the simulations and observations indicate there were similar reductions in the net CO2 uptake during drought. All the models (except for SiBCASA) and observations indicated the region was a net carbon sink during the 3‐year study period. Our study highlights a need to improve vegetation models through comparisons with empirical data and demonstrate the ICOS network's potential utility for constraining CO2 fluxes in the region. Plain Language Summary: As the largest global carbon sink, the boreal region can play an important role in climate mitigation strategies. Thus, it is important to estimate the region's sink strength properly. However, due to limitations in measurement techniques at the regional scale, the sink strength estimates are often obtained from models, which require robust validation. Therefore, we combined flux and atmospheric concentration data from one of the stations in Northern Europe to validate estimates generated using four vegetation models. We also used a transport model to connect the fluxes to atmospheric concentration dynamics, then compared the modeled CO2 concentration patterns with observations to provide a regional scale validation of the vegetation models. These observed and modeled fluxes and concentrations are also used to investigate the impact of the 2018 drought over Nordic vegetation. We find that the 2018 European drought had only limited impact on the carbon fluxes over Northern Sweden. Both the modeling and measurements show that the study region was a carbon sink during the study period (2016–2018), with some variation in estimates from the four models. Increased stomatal conductance of the dry leaves right after wetness ended was reported before, while few studies paid attention to this phenomenon in canopy scale and its contribution to the forest carbon sink function. Therefore, we observed the continuous change of canopy wetness and ecosystem fluxes after wetness ended by using wetness sensors and eddy covariance method for a Japanese cypress forest (Chamaecyparis obtuse Sieb. Et Zucc.) in the Asian monsoon area. Larger gc (canopy conductance) were found in the relationships with both vapor pressure deficit and Rn (net radiation) during the first several hours after wetness ended. The results for λE (latent heat flux) were similar to that of gc in spring and summer. Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in the relationships with Rn at different stages after wetness ended did not show clear difference except in spring. Nevertheless, annual summed‐up NEE showed that the average CO2 uptake at the first several hours after wetness ended was larger than the usual dry period. These results suggest that the improved stomatal opening at the first several hours after wetness ended plays a significant role in the canopy‐scale gas exchange processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Net ecosystem CO2 exchange is the result of net carbon uptake by plant photosynthesis and carbon loss by soil and plant respiration. Temperature increases due to climate change can modify the equilibrium between these fluxes and trigger ecosystem‐climate feedbacks that can accelerate climate warming. As these dynamics have not been well studied in dry shrublands, we subjected a Mediterranean shrubland to a 10‐year night‐time temperature manipulation experiment that analyzed ecosystem carbon fluxes associated with dominant shrub species, together with several plant parameters related to leaf photosynthesis, leaf morphology, and canopy structure. Under moderate night‐time warming (+0.9°C minimum daily temperature, no significant reduction in soil moisture), Cistus monspeliensis formed shoots with more leaves that were relatively larger and denser canopies that supported higher plant‐level photosynthesis rates. Given that ecosystem respiration was not affected, this change in canopy morphology led to a significant enhancement in net ecosystem exchange (+47% at midday). The observed changes in shoot and canopy morphology were attributed to the improved nutritional state of the warmed plants, primarily due to changes in nitrogen cycling and higher nitrogen resorption efficiency in senescent leaves. Our results show that modifications in plant morphology triggered by moderate warming affected ecosystem CO2 fluxes, providing the first evidence for enhanced daytime carbon uptake in a dry shrubland ecosystem under experimental warming. Most tundra carbon flux modeling relies on leaf area index (LAI), generally estimated from measurements of canopy greenness using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), to estimate the direction and magnitude of fluxes. However, due to the relative sparseness and low stature of tundra canopies, such models do not explicitly consider the influence of variation in tundra canopy structure on carbon flux estimates. Structure from motion (SFM), a photogrammetric method for deriving three-dimensional (3D) structure from digital imagery, is a non-destructive method for estimating both fine-scale canopy structure and LAI. To understand how variation in 3D canopy structure affects ecosystem carbon fluxes in Arctic tundra, we adapted an existing NDVI-based tundra carbon flux model to include variation in SFM-derived canopy structure and its interaction with incoming sunlight to cast shadows on canopies. Our study system consisted of replicate plots of dry heath tundra that had been subjected to three herbivore exclosure treatments (an exclosure-free control [CT], large mammals exclosure), and a large and small mammal exclosure [ExLS]), providing the range of 3D canopy structures employed in our study. We found that foliage within the more structurally complex surface of CT canopies received significantly less light over the course of the day than canopies within both exclosure treatments. This was especially during morning and evening hours, and was reflected in modeled rates of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and gross primary productivity (GPP). We found that in the ExLS treatment, SFM-derived estimates of GPP were significantly lower and NEE significantly higher than those based on LAI alone. Our results demonstrate that the structure of even simple tundra vegetation canopies can have significant impacts on tundra carbon fluxes and thus need to be accounted for.

Despite a rapid development of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for carbon removal in recent years, the methods for evaluating NBS still have certain gaps. We propose an approach based on a combination of remote sensing data and meteorological variables to reconstruct the spatiotemporal variation of net ecosystem exchange from eddy-covariance stations. A Lagrangian particle dispersion model was used for upscaling satellite images and flux towers. We trained data-driven models based on kernel methods separately for each selected land-cover class. The results suggest that the proposed approach to quantifying carbon exchange on a medium-to-large scale by blending eddy covariance flux data with moderate resolution satellite and weather data provides a set of key advantages over previously deployed methods: (1) scalability, achieved via the validation design based on a separate set of eddy covariance stations; (2) high spatial and temporal resolution thanks to the use of Landsat imagery; and (3) robust and accurate predictions due to improved data quality control, advanced machine learning techniques, and rigorous validation. The machine learning models yielded high cross-validation results. Stratification that uses separate Fluxnet stations for each fold of validation ensures that the models are accurate across the area covered by the Fluxnet sites. Overall, we present here a globally scaled technology for the land sector based on high resolution remote sensing imagery, meteorological variables, and direct carbon flux measurements of eddy covariance flux stations.

Stress factors such as climate change and drought may switch the role of temperate peatlands from carbon dioxide (CO2) sinks to sources, leading to positive feedback to global climate change. Water level management has been regarded as an important climate change mitigation strategy as it can sustain the natural net CO2 sink function of a peatland. Little is known about how resilient peatlands are in the face of future climate change scenarios, as well as how effectively water level management can sustain the CO2 sink function to mitigate global warming. The authors assess the effect of climate change on CO2 exchange of south Swedish temperate peatlands, which were either unmanaged or subject to water level regulation. Climate chamber simulations were conducted using experimental peatland mesocosms exposed to current and future representative concentration pathway (RCP) climate scenarios (RCP 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5). The results showed that all managed and unmanaged systems under future climate scenarios could serve as CO2 sinks throughout the experimental period. However, the 2018 extreme drought caused the unmanaged mesocosms under the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 switch from a net CO2 sink to a source during summer. Surprisingly, the unmanaged mesocosms under RCP 2.6 benefited from the warmer climate, and served as the best sink among the other unmanaged systems. Water level management had the greatest effect on the CO2 sink function under RCP 8.5 and RCP 4.5, which improved their CO2 sink capability up to six and two times, respectively. Under the current climate scenario, water level management had a negative effect on the CO2 sink function, and it had almost no effect under RCP 2.6. Therefore, the researchers conclude that water level management is necessary for RCP 8.5, beneficial for RCP 4.5 and unimportant for RCP 2.6 and the current climate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arctic terrestrial ecosystems may be contributing to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations under amplified climate change at high‐latitudes. This research investigates how summer net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) and its component fluxes, gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Reco) varied over five years (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014) at the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory (74.92°N, 109.58°W). The eddy covariance technique was used to measure NEE and a combined light and temperature response model was used to partition NEE into GPP and Reco. Total summer NEE varied from −19.8 to 7.9 g C m−2. Despite two summers with net CO2 uptake, this tundra was likely a source of CO2 on an annual basis. In most years, growing degree days with a base 0°C (GDD0) had more predictive power than other environmental variables in random forest analyses of daily NEE. Interannual variability in total summer NEE over the five study years was also attributed to greater variability in GPP than Reco (coefficient of variation: 62% and 27%, respectively). However, total summer GDD0 significantly correlated with total summer Reco but not NEE nor GPP. Instead, summer total NEE and GPP significantly correlated with satellite‐derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), which may have exhibited carry‐over effects from one year to the next to limit the impact of current year GDD0 on total summer NEE at this tundra site. Over the last two decades, Arctic surface air temperatures have increased at a rate twice the global average, which has the potential to shift terrestrial carbon cycling, ultimately impacting atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), a potent greenhouse gas. Whether Arctic terrestrial ecosystems are releasing more CO2 than they are absorbing is important, as this can impact the global climate system. This research measured CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and the tundra over five summers at the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory (74.92°N, 109.58°W) on Melville Island, Nunavut, Canada. The ecosystem acted as a CO2 source for three out of five summers and is likely an annual net CO2 source to the atmosphere. Interannual differences in weather appeared to impact plant productivity and CO2 uptake more than decomposition and respiration and CO2 emissions to the atmosphere at this site. The amount of CO2 absorbed or lost from this tundra each summer was correlated to satellite observations, which could help us monitor the carbon balance of these remote but important ecosystems. This research highlights the importance of multiyear observations to constrain understanding of High Arctic tundra CO2 dynamics. Interannual variability (IAV, represented by standard deviation) in net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) is mainly driven by climatic drivers and biotic variations (i.e., the changes in photosynthetic and respiratory responses to climate), the effects of which are referred to as climatic (CE) and biotic effects (BE), respectively. Evaluating the relative contributions of CE and BE to the IAV in carbon (C) fluxes and understanding their controlling mechanisms are critical in projecting ecosystem changes in the future climate. In this study, we applied statistical methods with flux data from 65 sites located in the Northern Hemisphere to address this issue. Our results showed that the relative contribution of BE (CnBE) and CE (CnCE) to the IAV in NEE was 57%±14% and 43%±14%, respectively. The discrepancy in the CnBE among sites could be largely explained by water balance index (WBI). Across water-stressed ecosystems, the CnBE decreased with increasing aridity (slope=0.18%mm−1). In addition, the CnBE tended to increase and the uncertainty reduced as timespan of available data increased from 5 to 15 years. Inter-site variation of the IAV in NEE mainly resulted from the IAV in BE (72%) compared to that in CE (37%). Forests sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) which is important for climate mitigation. Net ecosystem production (NEP) varies significantly across forests in different regions depending on the dominant tree species, stand age, and environmental factors. Therefore, it is important to evaluate forest NEP and its potential changes under climate change in different regions to inform forestry policy making. Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the most prevalent species in conifer forests throughout Europe. Here, we focused on Norway spruce forests and used eddy covariance-based observations of CO2 fluxes and other variables from eight sites to build a XGBoost machine learning model for NEP estimation. The NEP values from the study sites varied between −296 (source) and 1253 (sink) g C m−2 yr−1. Overall, among the tested variables, air temperature was the most important factor driving NEP variations, followed by global radiation and stand age, while precipitation had a very limited contribution to the model. The model was used to predict the NEP of mature Norway spruce forests in different regions within Europe. The NEP median value was 494 g C m−2 yr−1 across the study areas, with higher NEP values, up to >800 g C m−2 yr−1, in lower latitude regions. Under the “middle-of-the-road” SSP2-4.5 scenario, the NEP values tended to be greater in almost all the studied regions by 2060 with the estimated median of NEP changes in 2041–2060 to be +45 g C m−2 yr−1. Our results indicate that Norway spruce forests show high productivity in a wide area of Europe with potentially future NEP enhancement. However, due to the limitations of the data, the potential decrease in NEP induced by temperature increases beyond the photosynthesis optima and frequent ecosystem disturbances (e.g., drought, bark beetle infestation, etc.) still needs to be evaluated.

Coastal wetlands provide the unique biogeochemical functions of storing a large fraction of the terrestrial carbon (C) pool and being among the most productive ecosystems in the world. However, coastal wetlands face numerous natural and anthropogenic disturbances that threaten their ecological integrity and C storage potential. To monitor the C balance of a coastal forested wetland, we established an eddy covariance flux tower in a natural undrained bottomland hardwood forest in eastern North Carolina, USA. We examined the long-term trends (2009–2019) in gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (RE), and the net ecosystem C exchange (NEE) seasonally and inter-annually. We analyzed the response of C fluxes and balance to climatic and hydrologic forcings and examined the possible effects of rising sea levels on the inland groundwater dynamics. Our results show that in 2009, a higher annual GPP (1922 g C m−2 yr−1) was observed than annual RE (1554 g C m−2 yr−1), resulting in a net C sink (NEE = −368 g C m−2 yr−1). However, the annual C balance switched to a net C source in 2010 and onwards, varying from 87 g C m−2 yr−1 to 759 g C m−2 yr−1. The multiple effects of air temperature (Tair), net radiation (Rn), groundwater table (GWT) depth, and precipitation (p) explained 66%, 71%, and 29% of the variation in GPP, RE, and NEE, respectively (p < 0.0001). The lowering of GWT (−0.01 cm to −14.26 cm) enhanced GPP and RE by 35% and 28%, respectively. We also observed a significant positive correlation between mean sea level and GWT (R2 = 0.11), but not between GWT and p (R2 = 0.02). Cumulative fluxes from 2009 to 2019 showed continuing C losses owing to a higher rate of increase of RE than GPP. This study contributes to carbon balance accounting to improve ecosystem models, relating C dynamics to temporal trends in under-represented coastal forested wetlands.

Rice growing under anaerobic conditions followed by spring wheat under an aerobic environment differentially impact the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon dioxide (CO2) in ricewheat systems of the north-western Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP). This is the first estimation of the NEE in a rice-spring wheat sequence via the eddy covariance technique in the north-western Indo-Gangetic Plains, which was partitioned into gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (RE) and correlated with the environmental variables. Higher CO2 uptake of −10.43 g C m−2 d −1 was observed in wheat during heading as compared to −7.12 g C m−2 d −1 in rice. The net uptake of CO2 was 25% lower in rice. The average daily NEE over the crop season was −3.74 and −5.01 g C m−2 d −1 in rice and wheat, respectively. The RE varied from 0.07–9.00 g C m−2 d −1 in rice and from 0.05–7.09 g C m−2 d −1 in wheat. The RE was positively correlated with soil temperature at 5 cm depth (0.543, p < 0.01) in rice and with air temperature (0.294, p < 0.01) in wheat. The GPP was positively correlated with air temperature (0.129, p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with vapor pressure deficit (VPD) (−0.315, p < 0.01) in rice. In wheat, GPP was positively correlated with air temperature (0.444, p < 0.01) and soil moisture (0.471, p < 0.01). The rate of GPP over the crop duration was nearly the same in both rice and wheat, however, the RE was higher in rice as compared to wheat, thus, the ratio of cumulative RE/GPP was 0.51 in rice and much lower at 0.34 in spring wheat. Rice contributed 46% and 43% to the annual totals of RE and GPP, respectively, while spring wheat contributed 36% and 51%. The NEE of CO2 was higher in spring wheat at −576 g C m−2 d −1 as compared to −368 g C m−2 in rice. Thus, while estimating the carbon sink potential in the intensively cultivated northern IGP, we need to consider that spring wheat may be a moderately stronger sink of CO2 as compared to rice in the rice-wheat system [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Northern peatlands play an important role in the regulation of the atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) balance, functioning as a net carbon sink with low rates of organic decomposition. However, perturbations such as drainage increase peat oxidation, which may lead to enhanced gaseous release of carbon. For this reason, the number of restoration projects that aim to rewet blanket bogs has increased in the last few years, but there is still a lack of understanding of the impact of restoration on emissions of greenhouse gases, such as methane, particularly in sites restored from forestry. In this paper, we investigate the seasonal greenhouse gas dynamics in a forest‐to‐bog restoration site in Scotland. We analyse the effects of restoration on both carbon dioxide and methane fluxes, and investigate which site factors (microtopography, vegetation type, soil moisture and temperature) drive the processes of gaseous exchange between the bog surface and the atmosphere. Our results show that the original surface is near greenhouse gase equilibrium at −0.28 gCO2eq m2·day−1 and that microtopographic features act as a net greenhouse gas sink (ridges = −0.94 gCO2eq m2·day−1 and furrows = −0.86 gCO2eq m2·day−1), whereas the bog pool is a net source of greenhouse gases (0.98 gCO2eq m2·day−1). We found different vegetation species play a key role in greenhouse gas flux dynamics, especially in forestry‐derived microtopographical features, and their presence and influence on greenhouse gas dynamics should be accounted for to provide a more comprehensive understanding of emissions associated with restoration management practices. Highlights: GHG (CO2 and CH4) dynamics in a boreal peatland restored from forestry are mainly affected by microtopography and vegetation.Forestry‐derived microforms (ridges and furrows) are better GHG sinks than pools (GHG emitters) and original surfaces (near GHG equilibrium).The presence of Trichophorum cespitosum leads to higher CH4 emissions.Restoration practices like terraforming may create a short‐term pulse net GHG emission due to an increase of both CH4 and CO2 fluxes. • We analysed eddy covariance data from 12 towers across 7 farms in New Zealand. • Climate effects were isolated from grazing or harvesting using a novel framework. • VPD and air temperature controlled NEE deficit, not soil moisture. Climate change is exposing agricultural systems to more frequent weather extremes, threatening production and challenging the sustainability of current management practices. However, isolating the climatic drivers of CO 2 exchange in managed systems can be complicated by the periodic removal of aboveground biomass through grazing or harvesting, abruptly shifting the potential for plant uptake and associated ecosystem biogeochemistry. We used eddy covariance datasets from managed grasslands across New Zealand to determine the relative effects of temperature, vapour pressure deficit, and soil moisture on net CO 2 uptake. Using time since grazing or harvest as a proxy for above-ground biomass, we accounted for the shifting potential CO 2 exchange associated with these management actions. We then fit light response curves to the outer envelope of data to estimate maximal potential NEE, and subsequently calculate NEE deficit for every measured half hour. Using this analytical framework, we combined data from seven locations making up sixteen individual flux datasets comprising >600 site months and found that high air temperature and vapour pressure deficit were stronger controls over NEE deficit than soil moisture. These results were also consistent with a controlled leaf-level experiment demonstrating increasing photosynthesis deficit as VPD increased under constant temperature. The dominance of atmospheric effects over soil moisture in determining grassland response to dry conditions has important implications because it may be more difficult to mitigate these responses with typical management approaches (e.g., irrigation). We found these patterns were consistent across a diverse range of managed grassland operations, but subtle differences suggest that expanding the approach to a wider array of climatic regions and soil types could provide additional insights into how we might avoid the worst effects of future drying on managed systems. (1) Molinia caerulea occurs in peatland vegetation communities. However, under certain environmental and management conditions it may overwhelm the typical peatland vegetation, compromising ecosystem services including carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration and storage. Improved understanding of the effects of M. caerulea on CO2 fluxes in peatland ecosystems will better inform landscape management. (2) Photosynthesis at a PPFD of 600 μmol m 2 s-1 (PG600), ecosystem respiration and partitioned (heterotrophic and autotrophic) below-ground respiration were calculated from closed-chamber measurements collected over the 2012–2014 growing seasons within two drained M. caerulea dominated peatland catchments in Exmoor National Park, southwest England. (3) All CO2 fluxes peaked in mid-summer, in association with increased soil temperature and vegetation growth. During wetter periods, below-ground autotrophic respiration and PG600 significantly decreased (p = 0.028 and p = 0.002), conversely heterotrophic respiration increased insignificantly (p = 0.081). An empirically derived net ecosystem exchange model estimated the growing season of 2012 to have been a smaller CO2 sink in carbon equivalents ( 126 ± 243 g m 2) than subsequent growing seasons ( 146 ± 310 and 234 ± 325 g m-2) due to lower photosynthetic rates during a cool, wet summer (2012). (4) Management aimed at preserving the carbon store and increasing carbon sequestration through raising water tables may reduce photosynthesis and increase heterotrophic respiration unless the dominance of M. caerulea is reduced and Sphagnum spp. cover increased.

The continuous field measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 were provided at ridge-hollow oligotrophic bog in the Middle Taiga zone of West Siberia, Russia in 2017-2018. The model of net ecosystem exchange of CO2 was suggested to describe the influence of different environmental factors on NEE and to estimate the total carbon budget of the bog over the growing season. The model uses air and soil temperature, incoming photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and water table depth, as the key factors influencing gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER). The model coefficients were calibrated using the data collected by automated soil CO2 flux system with two transparent long-term chambers placed at large hollow and small ridge sites.Experimental and modeling results showed that the Mukhrino bog acted over the study period as a carbon sink, with an average NEE of –87.7 gC m-2 at the hollow site and –50.2 gC m-2 at the ridge site. GPP was – 344.8 and –228.5 gC m-2 whereas ER was 287.6 and 140.9 gC m-2 at ridge and hollow sites, respectively. Despite of a large difference in NEE estimates between 2017 and 2018 the growing season variability of NEE were quite similar.

Forest clearing strongly influences the energy, water and greenhouse gas exchange at the land sur face - atmosphere inter face. To estimate effects of clear cutting on sensible (H), latent heat (LE) and CO2 fluxes the continuous eddy covariance measurements were provided at the recently clear-cut area situated in the western part of Russia from spring 2016 to the end of 2018. The possible effects of surrounding forest on the air flow disturbances and on the spatial pattern of horizontal advection terms within the selected clear-cut area were investigated using a process-based 3D momentum, energy and CO2 exchange model. The modeling results showed a very low contribution of horizontal advection term into total turbulent momentum fluxes at flux tower location in case of the southern wind direction. The results of field flux measurements indicated a strong inter- and intra-annual variability of energy and CO2 fluxes. The energy budget is characterized by higher daily and monthly LE fluxes throughout the entire period of measurements excepting the first two months after timber harvest. The mean Bowen ratio (β=H/LE) was 0.52 in 2016, 0.30 - in 2017 and 0.35 - in 2018. Analysis of CO2 fluxes during the first year following harvest showed that the monthly CO2 release at the clear-cut area consistently exceeded the CO2 uptake rates. The mean net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in the period was 3.3±1.3 gC∙m-2∙d-1. During the second and the third years of the flux measurements the clear-cut was also a prevailed sink of CO2 for the atmosphere excepting short periods in June and in the first part of July when daily CO2 uptake was higher than CO2 release rates. The mean NEE rates averaged for the entire warm period of corresponding years were 1.2±2.3 gС∙m-2∙d-1 in 2017 and 2.8±2.5 gC∙m-2∙d-1 in 2018, respectively. The mean ratio between gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (TER) was 0.58 in 2016, 0.84 - in 2017 and 0.74 - in 2018.

The retrospective dynamics of major components of the carbon cycle under land use changes in the Central Forest zone of European Russia was investigated. This area is known as one of the most important agricultural and economical regions of the country. We applied the process-based simulation model DNDC (DeNitrification-DeComposition) recommended by UNCCC and world widely used. In this study the DNDC model was parameterized for Russian arable soils using official statistical information and data taken from published sources. Three main carbon variables in agrolandscapes were modelled: soil organic carbon, soil respiration, and net ecosystem exchange over the period of 1990-2017. For the analysis six administrative regions were selected: three with unchanged (permanent) arable land structure (Kaluga, Moscow, and Yaroslavl), and other three with changed crop rotation (Kostroma, Smolensk, and Tver). All regions in the study are characterized by homogeneous soil cover and similar cultivated crops. The results of the modelling were verified using the data from field CO2 fluxes observations in the European part of Russia. In growing season, the agrolandscapes function as a net carbon sink and accumulate C from the atmosphere into plant biomass. The dynamics of organic carbon in soil under growing crops depends on organic fertilizers in cultivation technologies, and if they aren’t inputted, soil loses carbon. During the last 30 years the cumulative rates of net ecosystem exchange and soil respiration had decreased mostly due to reduction of arable land area. CO2 emission and soil organic carbon losses are the most important controls of land degradation. Based on the dynamic patterns of CO2 fluxes, the regions of the Central Forest zone could be separated into two groups. The group with central location characterized by intensive soil respiration and high rate of accumulation of organic carbon in soil, whereas peripheral group characterized by losses of soil organic carbon and low rates of soil respiration. According to the modelling, within the period of observations the inter-annual changes of carbon fluxes are mainly controlled by rising air temperature and heat supply, variable precipitation, and increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Among human activity the most important are change of arable land area and decreasing amount of fertilizers.

Ongoing responses to climate change in arctic-alpine ecosystems, including the increasing dominance of deciduous shrubs, involve major shifts in plant functional group composition. Because rates of photosynthesis and respiration and their responses to temperature may vary among plant functional groups, a better understanding of their contributions to carbon fluxes will help improve predictions of how ecosystem changes will affect carbon source-sink relations in globally important tundra regions. We used a sequential harvest method to estimate growing season functional group contributions to net ecosystem exchange (NEE), ecosystem respiration (ER), and gross photosynthesis (GP) in alpine heath-, meadow-, and Salix-dominated shrub communities. We also partitioned ER into aboveground and belowground components in all three communities. Belowground efflux was the dominant component of ER in the heath and meadow communities (63 percent and 88 percent of ER, respectively) but contributed only approximately 40 percent of ER in the shrub community. The dominant functional group in each community contributed most to aboveground exchanges. Estimates for cryptogams were uncertain, but indicated a minor role for bryophytes and lichens in overall exchange. The results of our novel method of partitioning gas-exchange measurements suggest strong differences in the relative proportions of soil versus aboveground respiration and in the contributions of different functional groups in the net carbon exchange of three important arctic-alpine community types, with implications for changes in carbon dynamics as these systems respond to environmental change.

No-tillage (NT) management is considered a leading approach for sustaining crop production and improving soil and environmental quality. Based on a long-term no-tillage experiment in a rice–oilseed rape cropping system, we examined differences in soil organic matter (SOM), soil microbial carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, and methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes between NT and conventional tillage (CT) management. SOM under NT was 21.0 g kg–1, and a significant difference was detected between 2004 and 2016. SOM increased under NT and CT by averages of 0.60 and 0.32 g kg–1 year–1, respectively. Soil microbial C and N content were higher under CT than under NT. However, soil C:N ratios under NT were 17.4 and 9.7% higher than the CT, respectively, whereas soil microbial C:N ratios under NT were on average 9.47 and 9.70% higher. In addition, about 70% of CO2 net uptake and over 99% of net CH4 emissions occurred during the rice season in May–September in the rice–oilseed rape cropping system. Annual cumulative CH4 and daytime net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) under NT was 1813.9 g CO2 equiv. m–2, 10.8% higher than that under CT. Our results suggest that a higher soil microbial C:N ratio and NEE (CH4 and daytime CO2) could contribute to increasing SOM/C in the surface soil under NT management.

Climate extremes and anomalies modify the CO2 ecosystem–atmosphere exchange of the boreal forests and consequently alter the terrestrial carbon stocks and the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. The effects of the anomalous weather conditions on the CO2 net ecosystem exchange (NEE), total ecosystem respiration (TER), and gross primary production (GPP) of the typical southern taiga nemorose spruce forest were analyzed using continuous eddy covariance flux measurements in the 2015–2020 period. The forest was found to be a source of atmospheric CO2 in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020 (the mean annual GPP/TER ratio was between 0.87 and 0.97). In 2018, the forest was found to act as a CO2 sink (GPP/TER = 1.47) when a positive temperature anomaly in the growing season was accompanied by a negative precipitation anomaly and increased global radiation. The early start of the CO2 uptake in the anomalously warm winter of 2019/2020 did not result in an increase in the annual GPP/TER ratio (0.90). The comparison of the flux data obtained from the nemorose spruce forest on the well-drained soils with the data obtained from paludified spruce forest in the same landscape showed that the mean annual GPP/TER ratio of the sites alternatively responded to the mentioned anomalies. This study suggests that a variety of soil moisture regimes across the southern taiga spruce forests provide a non-uniformity in the response reactions of the CO2 ecosystem–atmosphere exchange on the climate anomalies.

Introduction: Nitrogen enrichment of coastal salt marshes can induce feedbacks that alter ecosystem-level processes including primary production and carbon sequestration. Despite the rising interest in coastal blue carbon, the effects of chronic nutrient enrichment on blue carbon processes have rarely been measured in the context of experimental fertilization. Here, we examined the ecosystem-level effects of nitrate (NO3−) enrichment on the greenhouse gas dynamics of a Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh. We measured CO2 and CH4 fluxes using static chambers through two growing seasons in a salt marsh that was nitrogen-enriched for 13 years and compared fluxes to those from a reference marsh. Outcomes: We found that nitrogen enrichment increased gross primary productivity (GPP) by 7.7% and increased ecosystem respiration (Reco) by 20.8%. However, nitrogen enrichment had no discernible effect on net ecosystem exchange (NEE). Taken together, these results suggest that nitrogen-induced stimulation of Reco could transform this salt marsh from a carbon sink into a source of carbon to the atmosphere. Conclusion: Our results complement prior findings of nitrogen enrichment weakening soil structure and organic matter stability in tidal salt marshes, suggesting that increased nutrient inputs have the potential to alter the carbon storage function of these ecosystems through enhanced microbial respiration of previously sequestered carbon.

Abstract The impacts of warming on communities and ecosystems are predicted to be significant in mountain ecosystems because physiological processes, including rates of carbon (C) cycling, are often more temperature‐sensitive in colder environments. Plant biodiversity can also influence C exchange, yet few studies integrate how biotic and abiotic factors may directly or interactively impact ecosystem C flux. Here, we examine the link between simultaneous changes in multiple dimensions of plant diversity and peak growing season ecosystem C uptake across a climatic gradient in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA. We found that taxonomic diversity (species richness), functional diversity (functional evenness), and phylogenetic diversity (mean pairwise distance) were significantly and positively related to peak growing season ecosystem C uptake (i.e., net ecosystem exchange) when considered independently. However, when abiotic and biotic factors were integrated in a structural equation model, only plant phylogenetic diversity was significantly related to C uptake. In addition, we found that actual evapotranspiration (AET—a measure that integrates precipitation and temperature) affected ecosystem C exchange indirectly via its impact on the three dimensions of plant diversity that we examined. These findings highlight complex relationships among key measures of biodiversity and ecosystem C uptake in a rapidly warming ecosystem, and the possible mechanisms that underlie relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. They also point to the need for integrating multiple dimensions of biodiversity into studies of community and ecosystem ecology.

Peatlands are the most efficient natural ecosystems for long‐term storage of atmospheric carbon. Our understanding of peatland carbon cycling is based entirely on bottom‐up controls regulated by low nutrient availability. Recent studies have shown that top‐down controls through predator‐prey dynamics can influence ecosystem function, yet this has not been evaluated in peatlands to date. Here, we used a combination of nutrient enrichment and trophic‐level manipulation to test the hypothesis that interactions between nutrient availability (bottom‐up) and predation (top‐down) influence peatland carbon fluxes. Elevated nutrients stimulated bacterial biomass and organic matter decomposition. In the absence of top‐down regulation, carbon dioxide (CO2) respiration driven by greater decomposition was offset by elevated algal productivity. Herbivores accelerated CO2 emissions by removing algal biomass, while predators indirectly reduced CO2 emissions by muting herbivory in a trophic cascade. This study demonstrates that trophic interactions can mitigate CO2 emissions associated with elevated nutrient levels in northern peatlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In arctic and boreal ecosystems, ground bryophytes play an important role in regulating carbon (C) exchange between vast belowground C stores and the atmosphere. Climate is changing particularly fast in these high‐latitude regions, but it is unclear how altered precipitation regimes will affect C dynamics in the bryosphere (i.e. the ground moss layer including senesced moss, litter and associated biota) and the closely associated upper humus layer, and how these effects will vary across contrasting environmental conditions. Here, we set up a greenhouse experiment in which mesocosms were assembled containing samples of the bryosphere, dominated by the feather moss Hylocomium splendens, and the upper humus layer, that were collected from across a boreal forest chronosequence in northern Sweden which varies strongly in nutrient availability, productivity and soil biota. We tested the effect of variation in precipitation volume and frequency on CO2 exchange and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export, and on moss growth. As expected, reduced precipitation volume and frequency lowered net CO2 efflux, DOC export and moss growth. However, by regulating moisture, the lower bryosphere and humus layers often mediated how precipitation volume and frequency interacted to drive C dynamics. For example, less frequent precipitation reduced moss growth only when precipitation volume was low. When volume was high, high moisture content of the humus layer helped avoid moss desiccation. Variation in precipitation regime affected C cycling consistently in samples collected across the chronosequence, despite large environmental variation along the sequence. This suggests that the bryosphere exerts a strong buffering effect on environmental variation at the forest floor, which leads to similar responses of C cycling to external perturbations across highly contrasting ecosystems. As such, our study indicates that projected increases in droughts and ground evapotranspiration in high‐latitude regions resulting from climate change will consistently reduce C losses from moss‐dominated ecosystems. Aims: We evaluated the impacts of altered precipitation regimes on multiple aspects of the C cycle, including C fluxes, plant and soil microbial communities, and plant-soil interactions in a south-eastern Australian grassland. Methods: Our experimental treatments, operated through an automated system, included: (i) reduced and (ii) increased rainfall amount by 50%, (iii) reduced rainfall frequency but no change in amount (i.e., more extreme downpours), (iv) and an extreme summer drought. Results: Temporal dynamics of ecosystem-level CO2 fluxes fluctuated seasonally and were driven by variations in soil water availability, soil temperature and photosynthetically active radiation. Reducing the frequency of rainfall events, but without change in the amount of rainfall, resulted in lower ecosystem-level net CO2 uptake due to relatively greater Reco stimulation after the heavy downpours, particularly during the late summer season. The extreme summer drought downregulated both respiration and photosynthesis. Microbial abundance and activity did not change in response to rainfall manipulation and were not strongly related to precipitation-driven changes in C cycling. In contrast, a greater proportion of live to dead plant biomass, in turn driven by greater water availability, was a main driver of greater respiration and photosynthesis. Conclusions: Our study suggests that grasslands could shift from net C sinks to C neutral or even net sources of C under future scenarios of more variable rainfall regimes, thus reinforcing climate change. Carbon fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems and their response to environmental change are a major source of uncertainty in the modern carbon cycle. The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) presents the opportunity to merge eddy covariance (EC)‐derived fluxes with CO2 isotope ratio measurements to gain insights into carbon cycle processes. Collected continuously and consistently across >40 sites, NEON EC and isotope data facilitate novel integrative analyses. However, currently provisioned atmospheric isotope data are uncalibrated, greatly limiting ability to perform cross‐site analyses. Here, we present two approaches to calibrating NEON CO2 isotope ratios, along with an R package to calibrate NEON data. We find that calibrating CO2 isotopologues independently yields a lower δ13C bias (<0.05‰) and higher precision (<0.40‰) than directly correcting δ13C with linear regression (bias: <0.11‰, precision: 0.42‰), but with slightly higher error and lower precision in calibrated CO2 mole fraction. The magnitude of the corrections to δ13C and CO2 mole fractions vary substantially by site, underscoring the need for users to apply a consistent calibration framework to data in the NEON archive. Post‐calibration data sets show that site mean annual δ13C correlates negatively with precipitation, temperature, and aridity, but positively with elevation. Forested and agricultural ecosystems exhibit larger gradients in CO2 and δ13C than other sites, particularly during the summer and at night. The overview and analysis tools developed here will facilitate cross‐site analysis using NEON data, provide a model for other continental‐scale observational networks, and enable new advances leveraging the isotope ratios of specific carbon fluxes. Plain Language Summary: The magnitude and variability in the exchange of carbon between ecosystems and the atmosphere is a major source of uncertainty in carbon cycle models. These uncertainties have motivated substantial effort to measure these fluxes. Most observational methods provide an estimate of net carbon exchange, and efforts to break the net flux into its constituents requires a model, which without further constraints risks compounding observational uncertainties. Variations in the ratio of heavy‐to‐light carbon isotopes, 13C/12C, arise from photosynthetic responses to environmental conditions, and create a natural tracer to evaluate ecosystem fluxes. The NEON collects measurements of carbon isotope ratios of atmospheric carbon dioxide and plants and represents the largest network of consistently collected carbon isotope data associated with eddy covariance measurements to date. However, the accuracy of NEON's atmospheric carbon dioxide isotope ratios could be improved by using reference gas measurements to reduce bias and drift in these measurements. We develop and evaluate two correction methods and analyze continental‐scale patterns in the corrected atmospheric carbon dioxide isotope data. Further, we make these tools available as an R package to enable further cross‐site analyses using NEON's carbon isotope data. This paper discusses different feature selection methods and CO2 flux data sets with a varying quality‐quantity balance for the application of a Random Forest model to predict daily CO2 fluxes at 250 m spatial resolution for the Rur catchment area in western Germany between 2010 and 2018. Measurements from eddy covariance stations of different ecosystem types, remotely sensed vegetation data from MODIS, and COSMO‐REA6 reanalysis data were used to train the model and predictions were validated by a spatial and temporal validation scheme. Results show the capabilities of a backwards feature elimination to remove irrelevant variables and an importance of high‐quality‐low‐quantity flux data set to improve predictions. However, results also show that spatial prediction is more difficult than temporal prediction by reflecting the mean value accurately though underestimating the variance of CO2 fluxes. Vegetated parts of the catchment acted as a CO2 sink during the investigation period, net capturing about 237 g C m−2 y−1. Croplands, coniferous forests, deciduous forests and grasslands were all sinks on average. The highest uptake was predicted to occur in late spring and early summer, while the catchment was a CO2 source in fall and winter. In conclusion, the Random Forest model predicted a narrower distribution of CO2 fluxes, though our methodological improvements look promising in order to achieve high‐resolution net ecosystem exchange data sets at the regional scale. This exchange is already measured at scattered stations, but creating spatially resolved data sets remains a challenge. In this paper, we used satellite images of vegetation and meteorological data to predict the CO2 exchange of the Rur catchment area near the German‐Dutch‐Belgian border for every day from 2010 to 2018. In order to assess the prediction quality, we compared actual measurements from several stations within the catchment with the predictions at the locations of these stations. Results show that our method could increase prediction quality compared to previous process‐based models, though the error remains rather high. Vegetated parts of the catchment including coniferous forests, deciduous forests, grasslands, and croplands were all CO2 sinks on average. Vegetated roofs or green roofs may supply a number of different urban ecosystem services such as thermal regulation of local air temperature by evaporative cooling or climate change mitigation by sequestration of CO2. However, knowledge about the annual and seasonal variations of green roof carbon uptake due to changes in meteorological conditions and water availability remains scarce. We studied the annual variation of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) by eddy‐covariance flux measurements during a 5‐year period from 2014 to 2019 on a large and unirrigated green roof at the Berlin‐Brandenburg airport (BER) in Berlin, Germany. The roof vegetation was dominated by Sedum species and herbs. The BER green roof showed net uptake of carbon in each of the 5 study years with an average uptake of −141.1 g C m−2 y−1 and an average measurement uncertainty of ±15.5 g C m−2 y−1. The NEE, however, was characterized by significant interannual variation in which the maximum annual uptake of −189 g C m−2 y−1 in a year with above average precipitation roughly doubles the minimum uptake of −95 g C m−2 y−1 in a dry year. The variation of NEE was a function of the annual amount of precipitation and the frequency of rainfall, that is, the number of dry days per year (DDY). The roof might lose its carbon uptake function in a warmer future climate with an increasing number of DDY. Sustainable irrigation of the roof (e.g., rainwater harvesting) could help to maintain the carbon uptake function of the green roof vegetation. Vegetated (green) roofs are able to take up carbon dioxide from the air via photosynthesis, but we know relatively little about the effects weather has on their annual rate of CO2 uptake. Two 16‐year simulations were conducted to study the influence of two runoff schemes [the default one is TOPMODEL (hereafter referred as TOP) and the other one is the variable infiltration capacity (VIC)] with vegetation is being interactive [by enabling the carbon–nitrogen (CN) module] on the terrestrial carbon cycle fluxes of Africa using the regional climate model—RegCM4. The first simulation was labelled as CN‐TOP, while the second simulation was hereafter referred to as CN‐VIC. The results were evaluated and compared against various observation‐based satellites and reanalysis products. Results showed that the CN‐TOP overestimates leaf area index (LAI) and slightly underestimates the terrestrial carbon fluxes in comparison with the reference product; meanwhile, the CN‐VIC severely underestimates both LAI and terrestrial fluxes particularly over the Congo basin. In addition, the CN‐VIC shows a superior performance for simulating the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) than when it is simulated by the CN‐TOP. In summary, the coupled RegCM4‐CLM45‐CN‐VIC model can be recommended for future studies of NEE over Africa. To obtain robust results for simulating the terrestrial carbon fluxes especially the NEE; it is highly recommended to calibrate the four parameters of the VIC surface data set over Africa particularly over the Congo basin against in‐situ observations. Tropical peat forests are a globally important reservoir of carbon, but little is known about CO2 exchange on an annual basis. We measured CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and tropical peat swamp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia using the eddy covariance technique over 4 years from 2011 to 2014. The CO2 fluxes varied between seasons and years. A small carbon uptake took place during the rainy season at the beginning of 2011, while a substantial net efflux of >600 g C/m2 occurred over a 2 month period in the middle of the dry season. Conversely, the peat ecosystem was a source of carbon during both the dry and rainy seasons in subsequent years and more carbon was lost during the rainy season relative to the dry season. Our results demonstrate that the forest was a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere during every year of measurement with annual efflux ranging from 183 to 632 g C m−2 year−1, noting that annual flux values were sensitive to gap filling methodology. This is in contrast to the typical view of tropical peat forests which must have acted as net C sinks over time scales of centuries to millennia to create the peat deposits. Path analyses revealed that the gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (RE) were primarily affected by vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Results suggest that future increases in VPD could further reduce the C sink strength and result in additional net CO2 losses from this tropical peat swamp forest in the absence of plant acclimation to such changes in atmospheric dryness. Changes in plant communities can have large effects on ecosystem carbon (C) dynamics and long‐term C stocks. However, how these effects are mediated by environmental context or vary among ecosystems is not well understood. To study this, we used a long‐term plant removal experiment set up across 30 forested lake islands in northern Sweden that collectively represent a strong gradient of soil fertility and ecosystem productivity. We measured forest floor CO2 exchange and aboveground and belowground C stocks for a 22‐yr experiment involving factorial removal of the two dominant functional groups of the boreal forest understory, namely ericaceous dwarf shrubs and feather mosses, on each of the 30 islands. We found that long‐term shrub and moss removal increased forest floor net CO2 loss and decreased belowground C stocks consistently across the islands irrespective of their productivity or soil fertility. However, we did see context‐dependent responses of respiration to shrub removals because removals only increased respiration on islands of intermediate productivity. Both CO2 exchange and C stocks responded more strongly to shrub removal than to moss removal. Shrub removal reduced gross primary productivity of the forest floor consistently across the island gradient, but it had no effect on respiration, which suggests that loss of belowground C caused by the removals was driven by reduced litter inputs. Across the island gradient, shrub removal consistently depleted C stocks in the soil organic horizon by 0.8 kg C/m2. Our results show that the effect of plant functional group diversity on C dynamics can be relatively consistent across contrasting ecosystems that vary greatly in productivity and soil fertility. These findings underline the key role of understory vegetation in forest C cycling, and suggest that global change leading to changes in the relative abundance of both shrubs and mosses could impact on the capacity of boreal forests to store C. The dry forests of South America are a key player of the global carbon cycle and the regional water cycle, but they are being intensively deforested. We used eddy covariance measurements to compare the temporal patterns of CO2 and water vapour fluxes and their relationships with environmental variables in dry forest and pastures sites of central Argentina. Ecosystem fluxes showed clear contrasts in magnitude, timing and response to environmental controls between ecosystems. The dry forest displayed higher daily gross primary productivity (GPP, 10.6 vs. 7.8 g CO2 m−2 d−1) and ecosystem respiration (Reco, 9.1 vs. 7.0 g CO2 m−2 d−1) and lower net ecosystem exchange (NEE, −1.5 vs. −0.7 g CO2 m−2 d−1) than the pasture. These differences were explained by a lower tolerance of the pasture to cool temperatures and drought. The lowest NEE rates were observed between 26°C and 34°C in the pasture, but below this range, NEE increased sharply, switching to a carbon source with temperatures <20°C. By contrast, the dry forest remained as a strong carbon sink down to 18°C. The pasture also showed a stronger drop of GPP with drought compared with the dry forest, becoming a carbon source with soil wetness <25% of soil available water. Rainfall was strongly coupled with GPP in both ecosystems, but the dry forest responded to longer rainfall integration periods. Tropospheric ozone (O3) is probably the air pollutant most damaging to vegetation. Understanding how plants respond to O3 pollution under different climate conditions is of central importance for predicting the interactions between climate change, ozone impact and vegetation. This work analyses the effect of O3 fluxes on net ecosystem productivity (NEP), measured directly at the ecosystem level with the eddy covariance (EC) technique. The relationship was explored with artificial neural networks (ANNs), which were used to model NEP using environmental and phenological variables as inputs in addition to stomatal O3 uptake in Spring and Summer, when O3 pollution is expected to be highest. A sensitivity analysis allowed us to isolate the effect of O3, visualize the shape of the O3-NEP functional relationship and explore how climatic variables affect NEP response to O3. This approach has been applied to eleven ecosystems covering a range of climatic areas. The analysis highlighted that O3 effects over NEP are highly non-linear and site-specific. A significant but small NEP reduction was found during Spring in a Scottish shrubland (−0.67%), in two Italian forests (up to −1.37%) and during Summer in a Californian orange orchard (−1.25%). Although the overall seasonal effect of O3 on NEP was not found to be negative for the other sites, with episodic O3 detrimental effect still identified. These episodes were correlated with meteorological variables showing that O3 damage depends on weather conditions. By identifying O3 damage under field conditions and the environmental factors influencing to that damage, this work provides an insight into O3 pollution, climate and weather conditions.

Background Farmland accounts for a relatively large fraction of the world’s vegetation cover, and the quantification of carbon fluxes over farmland is critical for understanding regional carbon budgets. The carbon cycle of farmland ecosystems has become a focus of global research in the field of carbon dynamics and cycling. The objectives of this study are to monitor the temporal variation in the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and soil respiration in a spring maize (Zea mays L.) farmland ecosystem of the southern Loess Plateau of China. Methods A fully automated temperature-controlled flux chamber system was adopted in this study. The system contained nine chambers for CO2 flux measurements, and three treatments were conducted: with and without maize plants in the chamber, as well as a bare field. Observations were conducted from June to September 2011. This time period covers the seedling, jointing, heading, grain filling, and ripening stages of spring maize. Other factors, such as air temperature (Ta), soil temperature (Ts), soil water content (SWC), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and precipitation (P), were simultaneously monitored. Results There was observed diurnal variation in the NEE of the maize ecosystem (NEE-maize). A short “noon break” occurred when the PAR intensity was at its maximum, while soil respiration rates had curves with a single peak. During the overall maize growth season, the total NEE-maize was –68.61 g C m−2, and the soil respiration from the maize field (SR-maize) and bare field (SR-bare field) were 245.69 g C m−2 and 114.08 g C m−2, respectively. This work tests the hypothesis that jointly assimilating satellite observations of leaf area index and surface soil moisture into a land surface model improves the estimation of land vegetation and water variables. An Ensemble Kalman Filter is used to test this hypothesis across the Contiguous United States from April 2015 to December 2018. The performance of the proposed methodology is assessed for several modeled vegetation and water variables (evapotranspiration, net ecosystem exchange, and soil moisture) in terms of random errors and anomaly correlation coefficients against a set of independent validation datasets (i.e., Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model, FLUXCOM, and International Soil Moisture Network). The results show that the assimilation of the leaf area index mostly improves the estimation of evapotranspiration and net ecosystem exchange, whereas the assimilation of surface soil moisture alone improves surface soil moisture content, especially in the western US, in terms of both root mean squared error and anomaly correlation coefficient. The joint assimilation of vegetation and soil moisture information combines the results of individual vegetation and soil moisture assimilations and reduces errors (and increases correlations with the reference datasets) in evapotranspiration, net ecosystem exchange, and surface soil moisture simulated by the land surface model. However, because soil moisture satellite observations only provide information on the water content in the top 5 cm of the soil column, the impact of the proposed data assimilation technique on root zone soil moisture is limited. This work moves one step forward in the direction of improving our estimation and understanding of land surface interactions using a multivariate data assimilation approach, which can be particularly useful in regions of the world where ground observations are sparse or missing altogether.

Disturbances are important for renewal of North American forests. Here we summarize more than 180 site years of eddy covariance measurements of carbon dioxide flux made at forest chronosequences in North America. The disturbances included stand-replacing fire (Alaska, Arizona, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) and harvest (British Columbia, Florida, New Brunswick, Oregon, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Wisconsin) events, insect infestations (gypsy moth, forest tent caterpillar, and mountain pine beetle), Hurricane Wilma, and silvicultural thinning (Arizona, California, and New Brunswick). Net ecosystem production (NEP) showed a carbon loss from all ecosystems following a stand-replacing disturbance, becoming a carbon sink by 20 years for all ecosystems and by 10 years for most. Maximum carbon losses following disturbance (g C m−2y−1) ranged from 1270 in Florida to 200 in boreal ecosystems. Similarly, for forests less than 100 years old, maximum uptake (g C m−2y−1) was 1180 in Florida mangroves and 210 in boreal ecosystems. More temperate forests had intermediate fluxes. Boreal ecosystems were relatively time invariant after 20 years, whereas western ecosystems tended to increase in carbon gain over time. This was driven mostly by gross photosynthetic production (GPP) because total ecosystem respiration (ER) and heterotrophic respiration were relatively invariant with age. GPP/ER was as low as 0.2 immediately following stand-replacing disturbance reaching a constant value of 1.2 after 20 years. NEP following insect defoliations and silvicultural thinning showed lesser changes than stand-replacing events, with decreases in the year of disturbance followed by rapid recovery. NEP decreased in a mangrove ecosystem following Hurricane Wilma because of a decrease in GPP and an increase in ER.

Abstract Background Peatlands are an important component of Canada’s landscape, however there is little information on their national-scale net emissions of carbon dioxide [Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE)] and methane (CH4). This study compiled results for peatland NEE and CH4 emissions from chamber and eddy covariance studies across Canada. The data were summarized by bog, poor fen and rich-intermediate fen categories for the seven major peatland containing terrestrial ecozones (Atlantic Maritime, Mixedwood Plains, Boreal Shield, Boreal Plains, Hudson Plains, Taiga Shield, Taiga Plains) that comprise > 96% of all peatlands nationally. Reports of multiple years of data from a single site were averaged and different microforms (e.g., hummock or hollow) within these peatland types were kept separate. A new peatlands map was created from forest composition and structure information that distinguishes bog from rich and poor fen. National Forest Inventory k-NN forest structure maps, bioclimatic variables (mean diurnal range and seasonality of temperatures) and ground surface slope were used to construct the new map. The Earth Observation for Sustainable Development map of wetlands was used to identify open peatlands with minor tree cover. Results The new map was combined with averages of observed NEE and CH4 emissions to estimate a growing season integrated NEE (± SE) at − 108.8 (± 41.3) Mt CO2 season−1 and CH4 emission at 4.1 (± 1.5) Mt CH4 season−1 for the seven ecozones. Converting CH4 to CO2 equivalent (CO2e; Global Warming Potential of 25 over 100 years) resulted in a total net sink of − 7.0 (± 77.6) Mt CO2e season−1 for Canada. Boreal Plains peatlands contributed most to the NEE sink due to high CO2 uptake rates and large peatland areas, while Boreal Shield peatlands contributed most to CH4 emissions due to moderate emission rates and large peatland areas. Assuming a winter CO2 emission of 0.9 g CO2 m−2 day−1 creates an annual CO2 source (24.2 Mt CO2 year−1) and assuming a winter CH4 emission of 7 mg CH4 m−2 day−1 inflates the total net source to 151.8 Mt CO2e year−1. Conclusions This analysis improves upon previous basic, aspatial estimates and discusses the potential sources of the high uncertainty in spatially integrated fluxes, indicating a need for continued monitoring and refined maps of peatland distribution for national carbon and greenhouse gas flux estimation.
