Abstract

Mutants of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora were isolated wherein the production of pectin lyase (Pnl) and the bacteriocin carotovorin (Ctv) and cellular lysis (Lss) were neither induced by mitomycin C nor restored by RecA. A cosmid (pAKC280) carrying rdg (regulator of damage-inducible genes), however corrected this deficiency. The expression of Rdg in E.coli in the presence of RecA also led to activation of plnA transcription. A positive regulator was thus required in the activation of Pnl by DNA-damaging agents.

109. Evaluation of the frequency and temperature dependence of the dynamic mechanical properties of acetal resins

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the dynamic mechanical properties of two acetal resins (different colored samples of the same resin), an autopolymerized reline resin, and a heat-polymerized denture base resin. Measurements were obtained in two conditions, the frequency- and temperature-dependent conditions, using a dynamic viscoelastometer. The acetal resins exhibited lower loss tangent values than the autopolymerized reline resin and heat-polymerized denture base resin. With respect to temperature dependence, all of the materials displayed stable viscoelastic properties in the temperature range found in the oral environment. The acetal resin had both a glass transition temperature and a melting point, whereas the autopolymerized reline resin and heat-polymerized denture base resin had only glass transition temperatures. The results of this study suggest that acetal resin displays elastic properties when compared with the other 2 materials. © 2018, Japanese Society for Dental Materials and Devices. 123. Detecting glaucomatous progression with infrequent visual field testing

Abstract

PURPOSE: Previous work has investigated whether a significant regression slope in the first 2 years for the summary index Mean Deviation (MD) is predictive of rapid (≤-2 dB year-1 ) glaucomatous visual field progression. This work assumed six visual fields were obtained as per management guidelines, but in clinical practice commonly only two or three fields are measured. We used simulation methods to investigate how reducing test frequency influences the prediction of rapid visual field progression, along with the influence of including criteria based on regression slope. METHODS: We simulated visual field series (N = 100 000) spaced annually in the first 2 years and then biennially. We calculated positive and negative predictive values (PPV & NPV) for detecting rapid progression, based on a criterion of a significant negative regression slope of any magnitude, or of a magnitude less than a particular limit. We performed a second simulation using test frequency and disease prevalence parameters from a dataset of 255 glaucoma patients from The University of Tokyo Hospital, to check the validity of our method. RESULTS: Prediction values at 2 years were slightly less than those obtained using six visual fields. An addition of an appropriate slope based criterion materially improved PPV, with little detrimental effect on NPV. Simulated prediction values for the Tokyo dataset were similar to those determined empirically. CONCLUSION: Infrequent visual field testing does not dramatically alter predictive values at 2 years, but does substantially delay when significant progression may first be detected.

Abstract

The Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) was constructed as the first medical dedicated heavy ion accelerator facility at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). Over 9000 cancer patients have been treated with 140-430 MeV/u carbon beams since 1994. Compact ECR ion source with all permanent magnets, named Kei2, was developed for production of C4+ ions for medical treatment at NIRS. A compact ECR ion source for Gunma University (Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center: GHMC), Saga carbon-ion radiotherapy (Saga Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Tosu: SAGA HIMAT) and Kanagawa carbon-ion radiotherapy (Ion-beam Radiation Oncology Center in Kanagawa: i-ROCK) facility has been operated for medical use. It is a copy of the Kei2 which was developed by NIRS. In order to reduce operation cost of the injector for next designed carbon ion facility, we start design of new compact ECR ion source for C5+ production. Some dependence (mirror field, microwave power and frequency) were checked for optimal parameter of C5+ production at 18 GHz NIRS-HEC source. Results of experiments and specification of new compact source are described in this presentation., The 22nd International Workshop on ECR Ion Sources (ECRIS2016)

Abstract

Spectroscopic investigation was used to analyze quadratic electro-optic nonlinearity in poly(2,5-thienylene vinylene). The results showedthat the electroabsorption spectra was very similar to the second energy derivative of the unperturbed absorption and exhibited oscillations associated with strong vibronic features. The photorefractive effect under resonant photoexcitation was mainly due to nonlinearity.

Abstract

Introduction: Many reports show that denture adhesives improve the retention and stability of dentures. However, few randomized controlled trials have examined the effects of denture adhesives.Objective: This 10-center randomized controlled trial with parallel groups involving 200 edentulous patients wearing complete dentures aimed to evaluate the effects of short-term use of cream and powder denture adhesives.Methods: Patients were allocated into 2 cream- and powder-type adhesive groups and 1 control group. Intervention groups were treated with the 2 adhesives (1 each), and the control group received saline solution. Adhesive or control was applied to the denture-mucosal surface for 4 d, and data at baseline and after day 4 of intervention (i.e., 8 meals) were obtained. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with a 100-mm visual analog scale. Oral health–related quality of life was measured with the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. Perceived chewing ability was evaluated by a questionnaire regarding ease of chewing and swallowing food. Between-group comparisons were performed with Kruskal-Wallis tests with the Mann-Whitney Utest adjusted by Bonferroni correction. Within-group comparisons of pre- and postintervention measurements were performed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Intention-to-treat analysis was also performed.Results: Between-group comparisons showed no significant differences for general satisfaction or Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. However, significant differences in satisfaction with various denture functions with cream- and powder-type adhesives were seen in pre- and postintervention comparisons (P< 0.05). Significant differences were also observed for perceived chewing ability of hard foods (P< 0.05).Conclusion: These results suggest that although denture adhesives do not invariably improve denture function, they do affect subjective evaluations and possibly chewing of hard foods. Therefore, the effects of denture adhesive use are insufficient to resolve any fundamental dissatisfaction with dentures (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01712802).Knowledge Transfer Statement: The results of this study suggest that denture adhesives should be applied under certain conditions; however, an appropriate diagnosis is important before application. These practice-based data provide information to establish evidence-based guidelines for applying denture adhesives.
