Abstract

35th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 323-325, We introduce our multidisciplinary scientific approach, “multicrystalline informatics”. The fundamental idea is to integrate data science with experimental science, theory, and computation in order to enable a paradigm shift in development of materials. Especially, we apply this methodology to realize ideal block-cast silicon by clarifying structural and electrical properties of crystal defects and controlling mechanisms in complicated multicrystalline silicon. The usefulness of multicrystalline informatics is shown by various aspects including analysis of nucleation sites using weighted Voronoi diagram and 3D visualization of generation, propagation, and annihilation of crystal defects.

Abstract

By providing valuable information about the coronary artery wall and lumen, intravascular imaging may aid in optimizing interventional procedure results and thereby could improve clinical outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a light-based technology with a tissue penetration of approximately 1 to 3 mm and provides near histological resolution. It has emerged as a technological breakthrough in intravascular imaging with multiple clinical and research applications. OCT provides detailed visualization of the vessel following PCI and provides accurate assessment of post-procedural stent performance including detection of edge dissection, stent struts apposition, tissue prolapse, and healing parameters. Additionally, it can provide accurate characterization of plaque morphology and provides key information to optimize post-procedural outcomes. This manuscript aims to review the current clinical and research applications of intracoronary OCT and summarize the analytic OCT imaging software packages currently available. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract

In the current metal forming product development paradigm, product cost, time-to-market and product quality are three overriding issues, which determine the competitiveness of the developed products. In the up front design process, the first 20% of design activities commits to about 80% of product development cost and product quality issues. How to conduct ‘right the first time’ design is critical to ensure low development cost, high product quality and short time-to-market. To address these issues, state of the art technologies are needed. Traditionally, computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies provide solutions for representation of design intent and realization of design solution physically. However, it is difficult to address some critical issues in the design of forming process, tooling structure, material selection and properties configuration, and finally the product quality control and assurance. Computer-aided engineering (CAE) technology fills this gap as it helps practitioners generate, verify, validate and optimize design solutions before they are practically implemented and physically realized. In this paper, a methodology for evaluation of metal forming system design and performance via CAE simulation is developed. The concept of metal forming system and its design is first articulated and how the CAE technology helps design and design solution evaluation is then presented. To assess and evaluate the performance of metal forming systems, quantitative design evaluation criteria are developed. Through industrial case study, how the developed methodology helps metal forming system design and evaluation is illustrated and its efficiency and validity is finally verified. Abstract

The impact of nitridation on open volumes in thin HfSiOx films fabricated on Si substrates by atomic layer deposition was studied using monoenergetic positron beams. For HfSiOx, positrons were found to annihilate from the trapped state due to open volumes which exist intrinsically in an amorphous structure. After plasma nitridation, the size of open volumes decreased at a nitrogen concentration of about 20 at. %. An expansion of open volumes, however, was observed after postnitridation annealing (PNA) (1050 °C, 5 s). We found that the size of open volumes increased with increasing nitrogen concentration in HfSiOx. The change in the size of open volumes was attributed to the trapping of nitrogen by open volumes, and an incorporation of nitrogen into the amorphous matrix of HfSiOx during PNA. We also examined the role of nitrogen in HfSiOx using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and first principles calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Die performance and its service life are a non-trivial issue in metal-forming industry due to three overriding issues in this industry cluster: productivity, cost and quality are mainly dependent on it. Many factors in die life cycle from design and fabrication to downstream service all affect die performance and its service life. These factors could include die design and structure, material properties, dies manufacturing and metal-forming processes, and die service conditions. The issue about how to develop an efficient and practical methodology for die life assessment and improvement has not yet been fully addressed despite the fact that dies have been used in industry for many decades. In this paper, the metal fatigue theory and FEM technique are used as the basis for the development of a methodology for die fatigue life analysis and improvement. The stress-life or S-N approach is used for die fatigue analysis. To explore extensively and reveal the dynamic die stress state panorama during the forming loading cycle, a CAE-based approach is deployed for stress analysis. Based on the S-N approach and CAE analysis, a CAE-enabled methodology is then orchestrated and finally implemented in this research. Using an industrial part as a case study, the validity, robustness and efficiency of the developed methodology are verified. Abstract

FeSiN films for a narrow track head have been studied, utilizing ion beam reactive sputtering method. By controlling both nitrogen flow ratio and substrate temperature, the low-Si-content FeSiN films with (112) orientation were obtained. The magnetostriction was reduced by this orientation, and good soft magnetic properties appeared. The saturation magnetic flux density of the films was 1.7T. The 7.5 [[micro]meter] trackwidth FeSiN heads showed good recording and reproducing characteristics.
