Abstract

The research was conducted in 1998 and 1999 in a natural reserve located in north-western Sardinia (Italy). Two typical species of Mediterranean maquis were studied: Pistacia lentiscus L. and Cistus monspeliensis L. From March to November, the wound ethylene produced by the leaves of both species was measured by gas chromatography. During the trial, plant phenology and environmental conditions were monitored. From May to July, a period characterised by severe drought and soil moisture values constantly lower than the wilting point, ethylene production increased in both years for Cistus monspeliensis and in 1998 for Pistacia lentiscus. The amount of ethylene produced dropped sharply as soon as rainfall occurred. Significant relationships between ethylene production and Canopy Drought Stress Index were found.

103. Complications in total thyroidectomy: our experience and a number of considerations

Abstract

The authors review 1,636 cases of total thyroidectomy with reference to specific complications, classifying them under the headings: major-minor, early-late, transitory-definitive. They report 19 cases of postsurgical haemorrhage, all within 12 hours of the operation, 31 transitory and 15 definitive cases of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, and 14 cases of definitive hypoparathyroidism. As far as the minor complications were concerned, there was a greater incidence of seroma following the use of the harmonic scalpel. The risk factors and physiopathological mechanisms associated with each type of complication are analysed here, above all those responsible for the major and definitive complications. The need for routine preparation of the recurrent nerve, in order to prevent occurrence of postsurgical paralysis is stressed, as is the efficacy of vitamin D in preventing symptomatic postsurgical hypocalcaemia.

107. A retrospective analysis of radiation therapy for the treament of feline vaccine-associated sarcoma

Abstract

We retrospectively evaluated predictive prognostic factors in 73 cats with vaccineassociated sarcoma given postsurgical curative (n=46, most with clean margins) or coarse fractionated radiotherapy (n=27, most with either macroscopic disease or dirty margins). The former animals displayed a median survival of 43 months and a median progression free interval (PFI) of 37 months, the latter reached a median survival of 24 months and a median PFI of 10 months. In cats undergoing coarse fractionated therapy, factors predictive of a better outcome included lack of visible mass (n=10) as opposed to macroscopic disease (n=17, survival: 30 vs. 7 months, P=0.025; PFI: 20 vs. 4 months, P=0.01), adjuvant chemotherapy for gross disease (n=5/17, survival: 29 vs. 5 months, P=0.04) and a smaller number of surgeries preceding radiation therapy (Coeff=0.41,^P=0.03). The Ki67-index was not predictive for survival. We concluded that postsurgical curative and coarse fractionated radiotherapy are both effective legitimate options for managing vaccine-associated sarcomas.

Abstract

We support the normal standards for two sonographic (US) signs of the posterior cranial fossa, namely the magnitude of the cisterna magna and the height of the fourth ventricle fastigium, in preterm and fullterm infants.The cisterna magna was measured as the distance between the inferior aspect of the cerebella vermis and the inner aspect of the occiput. The height of the fourth ventricle fastigium was calculated as the line drawn from the fastigium to the inner aspect of the occiput, close to the opisthion.The cisterna magna was .46 +/- .13 cm in preterm infants and .45 +/- .1 cm in fullterm infants (the difference was not significant), whereas the height of the fourth ventricle fastigium was 1.7 +/- .26 cm in preterm and 1.9 +/- .16 cm in fullterm infants (the difference was significant, p.005).The finding of a cisterna magna of equal size in preterm and fullterm infants is in agreement with the concept that subarachnoid and cisternal spaces of the posterior fossa are still large at birth and start to decrease in size later in life. Our results suggest that a cisterna magna smaller than .2 cm in height and/or a fastigium closer than 1.2 cm to the basiocciput in preterm and closer than 1.6 cm in fullterm infants indicate, in a proper clinical context, an abnormally low cerebellum position (Arnold-Chiari malformation). On the other hand, cisterna magna values exceeding .72 in preterm and .65 cm in fullterm infants, as well as fastigium values exceeding 2.22 cm in both groups may suggest the presence of the Dandy-Walker complex or of an arachnoid cyst.

Abstract

An acute outbreak of Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis, causing mortality in 5 of 21 (23.8%) female lambs, is reported. Gross post-mortem examinations and histology showed Cysticercus tenuicollis as the cause of death. Biochemical parameters in infected lambs confirmed severe hepatitis. Praziquantel, given once at 15 mg/kg body weight (bw), was administered and a dramatic improvement in the clinical condition and biochemical parameters was observed up to 30 days following treatment.
