Abstract

Abstract: Cu-doped Mg0.2Zn0.8O thin films were synthesized by sol–gel spin coating. We investigated the microstructural and optical characteristics of the Cu-doped Mg0.2Zn0.8O thin films. By increasing the Cu content of the source, Cu-doped Mg0.2Zn0.8O thin films were phase-separated into Cu-rich and Cu-poor areas, which could be a result of the limited Cu solubility in the Mg0.2Zn0.8O lattice. As the annealing temperature increased, the crystallinity of the Cu-doped Mg0.2Zn0.8O thin films improved. Cu doping in Mg0.2Zn0.8O thin films resulted in a decrease of both intensities for UV and visible emissions without a shift of the peak positions in the photoluminescence spectrum. Abstract

Contribution of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) to experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) was well defined (Speidel et al., Eur. J. Immunol. 1997, 27, 2391-2399, Ref. 7). The native porcine thyroglobulin (pTg) showed high sensitivity to endo-Β-N-acetylglucosaminidase F (Endo F) and its molecular weights, corresponding to about 330 kDa as a monomer and 660 kDa as a dimer, were reduced to smaller molecular weight forms by Endo F and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TMSF). Deglycosylated porcine Tg (dgpTg) and native pTg were injected i.v. into CBA/J mice, without the aid of adjuvants. Both lymphocytic infiltrations of the thyroid glands and levels of Tg-specific CTL were similar to those found in conventional EAT induced by Tg and adjuvants. In contrast, proliferative responses in native pTg and dgpTg-injected mice could not be detected, and titers of antibodies to pTg and dgpTg were 20 times and 30 times lower than that of pTg and adjuvants, respectively. The EAT-inducer CTL belonged to the CD8+ cell subset and exerted their thyroiditogenic potential through release of IFN-γ. It was concluded that dgpTg-induced EAT is mediated by type 1 cytotoxic T cells (Tcl). Also, results that EAT induction of the glycosylated pTg (gpTg) was much lower than that of dgpTg, suggested that the abberant and incomplete glycosylation of the thyroglobulin is responsible for the induction of autoimmune thyroiditis. Korean Abstract: 국제 공유지는 특정 국가의 관할 밖에 있는 우주‧공해 및 심해저‧남극‧대기 등을 포함하며, 자원이 풍부하고 인류의 안위 및 발전과 직결되기 때문에 중요성을 갖는다. 이러한 중요성에 기반하여 국제사회는 국제 공유지의 활용 및 관리를 위한 거버넌스 체제를 구축해 왔는데, 최근 공유지에 대한 관심이 더욱 증대되면서 새로운 공유지 거버넌스의 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 이에 본 보고서에서는 심해저‧남극‧우주를 중심으로 국제 공유지의 일반적인 현황을 살펴보고 각 공유지별 거버넌스 제도를 면밀히 고찰하였다. 나아가 주요국들의 공유지 활용정책을 살펴봄으로써 우리나라 및 국제사회에 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 특히 대부분의 다른 연구들이 하나의 국제 공유지에만 집중한 데 반해, 본 연구는 세 개의 공유지를 포괄적으로 비교‧분석하였고, 문헌검토뿐만 아니라 국‧내외 전문가들과의 면담을 통해 더욱 심도 있는 분석을 시도함으로써 차별점을 두었다. English Abstract: The global commons are resource domains or areas which no nation exert sovereignty over. Three typical global commons refer to the deep seabed, Antarctica and, outer space. They have been said to be important due to not only abundant resources but also mankinds security. However, these have been free of any national or international regulation. The absence of exclusive property right could lead to economic inefficiency and international conflicts. This inherent problem is put forth by Garrett Hardin in his famous article, The Tragedy of the Commons. In order to avoid these problems, many theories or principles are postulated. One of these principles is the principle of the common heritage of mankind (CHM). It has been accepted and applied to the global commons since it was incorporated into the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). With improving technology and developing countries’ growing, the application of the CHM has been a source of controversy. Consequently, it is necessary to suggest the new principles for the governance of the global commons. This research investigates not only the common properties of global commons but also their existing governance. First, we investigate issues of the deep seabed. For a long time the open access doctrine or mare liberum (free sea for everyone) of the high seas had ruled the governance of the deep seabed. But, UN adopted UNCLOS in 1982, and the CHM has been incorporated in the governance of the deep seabed. Based on UNCLOS, International Seabed Authority (ISA) was founded to manage the exploration and the development of mineral resources in the deep seabed. There have been conflicts between the leading countries which insist on their priority of natural resources they explored and found and the following countries which insist on suspension of development of natural resources in the deep seabed. ISA still suspends the development of mineral resources in the deep seabed, but it admits the priority of the leading countries if they explored two sector of the deep seabed and waive the one sector. Second, this study analyzes the current issues of Antarctica. Antarctica is facing rapid environmental degradation due to human pressures such as pollution, and the effects of global warming. Compared to the deep seabed, however, the governance of Antarctica has been stable and good at handling the major concerns of the protection of Antarctica. The governance of Antarctica works based on the Antarctic Treaty and related agreements, collectively called the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). The reason of the stability of the governance of Antarctica is that all the participating countries agreed to the protection of Antarctica with no development of its resources. In addition, ATS has prohibited any country from claim to the sovereignty over Antarctica. Third, outer space is interesting to investigate since there has been no organized governance. Since its inception after the launch of Sputink in 1958, the governance of outer space has been created and modified. The five principal space law treaties had been signed between 1967 and 1981. The initial establishment of the governance was not difficult, and the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) has been responsible for managing the governance. However, the governance of outer space underwent a more controversial development than the deep seabed and Antarctica. With fast growing technology of spaceship and its related parts, the governance should have been modified. but the conflicts between the leading countries and the following countries hinder from the development of the governance of outer space. Shortage of orbits of satellites and space debris created major problems in the use of outer space, but all the countries participating in the governance had not agreed to the management system of handling these new problems yet. Abstract

The three essays in this dissertation focus on the economics of bioenergy and emissions trading. Chapter Two analyzes the economic impacts of cellulosic feedstock production in a major watershed of south-central Minnesota. A regional economic model of agricultural production in the watershed is constructed. By integrating environmental parameters from a biophysical simulation analysis of the watershed, the model focuses on economic and environmental issues associated with increasing use of two cellulosic feedstocks, corn stover and switchgrass, at the watershed level. Results indicate that corn stover can be produced at a relatively low marginal cost compared to switchgrass. Sediment and nutrient losses from corn stover production make switchgrass more promising on environmental grounds but the high marginal cost of production causes switchgrass to cover only small part of crop land if farmers have unrestricted choice about how to supply cellulosic feedstocks. Chapter Three extends the model of chapter Two to examine the tradeoffs between cellulosic feedstock production and water quality by analyzing policy options targeted to address those tradeoffs. Policy alternatives considered include restrictions on total nitrate-N load in the watershed and production subsidies for switchgrass – an energy crop with potential environmental benefits. Restricting nitrate-N loads increases the cost of cellulosic feedstock supply and in some circumstances makes switchgrass production an economical alternative. Switchgrass production subsidies, if sufficiently high can increase feedstock supply while reducing or eliminating the negative effects of feedstock production on water quality. Chapter Four examines how uncertainty in emissions affects firms’ decision of permit purchase and abatement. This paper extends previous models of emissions trading by considering uncertainty as well as the order of firms’ decisions about abatement and permit trading. When there is uncertainty about emissions, total expected emissions are the same regardless of the order of moves. The results show that whether firms abate more under uncertainty is dependent on the expected penalty cost and marginal abatement cost. If the expected marginal penalty cost is greater than the marginal abatement cost, the firm will choose to reduce emissions and abate more under uncertainty. When expected penalty is greater than marginal cost of abatement, increase in uncertainty makes expected emissions decrease given unit penalty fee.

143. Terahertz Wave Applications of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Films with High Shielding Effectiveness.

Abstract

We demonstrate that a filtration method is efficient for the fabrication of thick single-walled nanotube films and is capable of shielding terahertz waves. Shielding effectiveness can be engineered by controlling the film thickness and we achieved 38 dB for a 950-nm-thick film. In addition, we found that the films exhibit a dispersion of dielectric constant obeying the Drude free-electron model, whereas the plasma frequency decreases with increasing film thickness. Based on the nanotube films with a thickness greater than the skin depth, we fabricated grid polarizers by laser-machining process, which enable us to achieve a large polarization extinction ratio. 144. Improvement of the Light Extraction Efficiency in n-ZnO:Ga/p-Si Heterojunction Light Emitting Diodes by a SiO2 Current-Blocking Layer.

Abstract

We studied the role of a patterned SiO2 current-blocking layer (CBL) on the output power in polycrystal n-type ZnO:Ga/p-Si heterojunction light emitting diodes (LEDs). The introduction of a CBL considerably improved the light extraction efficiency by about 200%, despite the increased series resistance. It suppressed the vertical current with a low extraction efficiency by opaque metals and allowed the spreading current component to be enhanced, in contrast to conventional n-ZnO/p-Si LEDs operated only a vertical current component due to the grain boundaries in the ZnO films. This result suggests that the use of CBL is profitable method in the emitter application using the film with the polycrystal structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

145. Exercise Preferences and Barriers Among Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction or Myocardial Infarction.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Although cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is highly recommended in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), participation in CR is low mainly due to access barriers. Home-based CR (HBCR) has been recommended to overcome access barriers. Exercise is a core component of CR and should be developed and implemented based on individual characteristics. We aimed to assess physical activity behaviors, exercise preferences, and exercise barriers to understand physical activity characteristics of CVD patients., Methods: Participants were patients between the ages 19 to 75 years with a history of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) or myocardial infarction (MI). They completed a cross-sectional survey at a tertiary hospital's outpatient clinic from April to June 2021. Survey data included physical activity levels, patterns, preference, and barriers of exercise., Results: Participants (n=189; 143 males, 46 females, 62.1±12.0 years) were diagnosed as either HFrEF (n=160, 84.7%) or a history of MI (n=97, 51.3%). Only 26.5% of patients engaged in moderate to vigorous exercise for more than 150 minutes per week. Participants preferred exercising alone or with families. Walking (65.6%) and resistance exercises (35.4%) were favored, with outdoor (37%) and home-based (30.2%) settings preferred over fitness centers (10.6%) and hospitals (0.5%). Barriers to exercise included fatigue (34.4%), poor health perception (31.7%), and low fitness levels (30.7%)., Conclusions: The results of this study can be used to develop tailored HBCR programs that consider individual preferences and address specific barriers, facilitating adequate physical activity engagement., Competing Interests: The authors have no financial conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024.
