110. The Assessment of the Western Mackerel Stock

Abstract

The mackerel fishery is one of the most important components of the Irish fishing industry. The annual Irish quota is based on the scientific assessments of the size of the spawning stock. These assessments are based on the mackerel egg surveys which are carried out every three years and on the age composition of the total catches. The assessments have indicated that the stock in recent years has declined substantially and is now below 2 million tonnes. Predictions on the development of the stock indicate that it will decline even further unless catches are substantially reduced. The management target for the stock is that it should be rebuilt to a level above 2 million tonnes as quickly as possible. The decline in the stock has resulted in severe reductions in the Irish annual quota and this in turn has had a serious effect on both the catching and processing sectors of the industry.

Abstract

There is a broad knowledge of the growth andreproduction of Trachurus trachurus,although important gaps still exist. Horsemackerel are a long-lived species, reaching upto 40 years of age. They have isometric growth,although the alometric parameter b mayvary throughout the year and in relation tolatitude. Growth to age 3 is rapid compared toslower growth later in life. Phenomena ofdensity dependent growth have been observed inthe northeast Atlantic. Horse mackerel are anasynchronous species. The following stages ofatresia have been validated in horse mackerel:alpha, beta, and delta. The transition infemales from the spawning state to postspawning is very fast. The spawning fraction inhorse mackerel is estimated to be between 8.3%and 20.9%. Horse mackerel have a long spawningseason (up to 8 months), which varies accordingto geography. Length at first maturity isbetween 16 and 25 cm, most commonly around21 cm. Males mature at a slightly smallerlength than females. The age at first maturityfor females has been estimated to range from 2to 4 years, depending on the geography. Batchfecundity has been estimated to range between172–209 oocytes per gram-female-weight. Femalespawning lasts between 65 and 94 days. Anindividual female can release from 5 to 16batches during the spawning period. Theestimated potential annual relative fecundityranges from 1040 to 3280 oocytes pergram-female-weight.

128. Herring tagging experiments around Ireland, 1991

Abstract

The assessment and management of the herring fisheries around Ireland assumes that there are three distinct and separate populations. The management units are based on ICES Areas which, however, are not based on the distribution of the stocks and which do not take into account the mixing that takes place between the different stocks. In July 1992 a herring tagging experiment was carried out, designed to provided information on the migration of the herring around Ireland which would be useful in establishing more realistic management units. In the experiment over 20,000 herring were tagged and liberated - 10,000 southwest of the Isle of Man and 10,000 in Broadhaven Bay. Over 450 tagged fish have been recovered to date and the results suggested considerable movement of herring between the different management units. There appears to be a major link between the Irish Sea stocks and the part of the Celtic Sea stock that spawns off the south east coast of Ireland. A small number of fish tagged off the Mayo coast migrated south to the coast of Kerry. The mixing of these stocks should be taken into account when the various stocks are assessed and when the annual TAC's are estimated.

131. Effect of jet exit vanes on flow pulsations in an open-jet wind tunnel

Abstract

An investigation was conducted of various jet exit vane configurations in the open test section of the Langley 4- by 7-Meter Tunnel to determine their effectiveness in reducing flow pulsations. The data consist of the instantaneous velocity fluctuations measured with hot-wire anemometers located at the tunnel centerline, 39.5 ft (12.0) downstream of the jet exit. The data are presented in the form of measured root-mean-square turbulence levels in the test section and a time series analysis for the baseline jet exit configuration (without vanes) and forthe most effective vane configuration, which consisted of triangular vanes alternating into and out of the flow around the jet exit.

Abstract

Noise and economic characteristics were obtained for an advanced supersonic transport concept that utilized wing body blending, a double bypass variable cycle engine, superplastically formed and diffusion bonded titanium in both the primary and secondary structures, and an alternative interior arrangement that provides increased seating capacity. The configuration has a cruise Mach number of 2.62, provisions for 290 passengers, a mission range of 8.19 Mm (4423 n.mi.), and an average operating cruise lift drag ratio of 9.23. Advanced operating procedures, which have the potential to reduce airport community noise, were explored by using a simulator. Traded jet noise levels of 105.7 and 103.4 EPNdB were obtained by using standard and advanced takeoff operational procedures, respectively. A new method for predicting lateral attenuation was utilized in obtaining these jet noise levels.

Abstract

The concepts of laminar flow control, very large all-wing aircraft, an aerial relay transportation system and alternative fuels, which would enable large improvements in fuel conservation in air transportation in the 1990's are discussed. Laminar boundary layer control through suction would greatly reduce skin friction and has been reported to reduce fuel consumption by up to 29%. Distributed load aircraft, in which all fuel and payload are carried in the wing and the fuselage is absent, permit the use of lighter construction materials and the elimination of fuselage and tail drag. Spanloader aircraft with laminar flow control could be used in an aerial relay transportation system which would employ a network of continuously flying liners supplied with fuel, cargo and crews by smaller feeder aircraft. Liquid hydrogen and methane fuels derived from coal are shown to be more weight efficient and less costly than coal-derived synthetic jet fuels.
