Objectives: We aimed to determine the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in sport, and what risk factors were associated with LBP in athletes.Design: Systematic review with meta-analysis.Data Sources: Literature searches from database inception to June 2019 in Medline, Embase, Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science and Scopus, supplemented by grey literature searching.Eligibility Criteria: Studies evaluating prevalence of LBP in adult athletes across all sports.Results: Eighty-six studies were included (30 732, range 20-5958, participants), of which 45 were of 'high' quality. Definitions of LBP varied widely, and in 17 studies, no definition was provided. High-quality studies were pooled and the mean point prevalence across six studies was 42%; range 18%-80% (95% CI 27% to 58%, I2=97%). Lifetime prevalence across 13 studies was 63%; range 36%-88% (95% CI 51% to 74%, I2=99%). Twelve-month LBP prevalence from 22 studies was 51%; range 12%-94% (95% CI 41% to 61%, I2=98%). Comparison across sports was limited by participant numbers, study quality and methodologies, and varying LBP definitions. Risk factors for LBP included history of a previous episode with a pooled OR of 3.5; range 1.6-4.0 (95% CI 1.9 to 6.4). Statistically significant associations were reported for high training volume, periods of load increase and years of exposure to the sport.Conclusion: LBP in sport is common but estimates vary. Current evidence is insufficient to identify which sports are at highest risk. A previous episode of LBP, high training volume, periods of load increase and years of exposure are common risk factors. Purpose: Surgery is the only potentially curative treatment for pancreatic and liver cancer. However, even in high-volume centres, surgical resection is associated with significant morbidity with resultant physical decline. This systematic review explored physical function and its' implications in the management of resectable cancer of the pancreas and liver. Methods: EMBASE, Medline OVID, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched up to June 2019 using a predefined search strategy. Screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment was performed independently by two reviewers. A third reviewer resolved disagreements by consensus. Results: Sixteen studies with a total of 1224 participants were included. Heterogeneity of the literature prevented a meta-analysis. Physical function across the pancreatic/liver cancer trajectory has been under investigated. The relationship between physical function and pancreatic/liver cancer resection outcome remains unclear, although anaerobic threshold appears the strongest predictor of postoperative outcomes. Conclusions regarding the impact of rehabilitative interventions on physical function were limited due to risk of bias concerns. Conclusions: High-quality evidence regarding the implications of physical function in resectable pancreatic and liver cancers is lacking. Well-designed trials are required to examine physical function across the pancreatic/liver cancer continuum and to measure the impact of rehabilitation on physical function. Implications for Cancer Survivors: As survival rates for pancreatic and liver cancer slowly improve a greater understanding of the impact of these cancers and their treatments on physical function, and the potential impact of rehabilitative interventions for survivors is required. Introduction: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is characterised by pain, functional deficits, nutritional and mechanical complications. Frequently managed in out-patient settings, the clinical course is unpredictable and requires multi-disciplinary care. There remains substantial variation in management. In contrast to acute pancreatitis, there are no globally accepted classification or severity scores to predict the disease course or compare interventions. We conducted a systematic review to determine the scope and clinical use of existing scoring systems. Methods: A systematic search was developed with a medical librarian using the Embase, Medline and Cochrane databases. Original articles and conference abstracts describing an original or modified classification or scoring system in CP that stratified patients into clinical and/or severity categories were included. To assess clinical application/validation, studies using all or part of a score as a stratification tool to measure another parameter or outcome were selected. Studies reporting on diagnosis or aetiology only were excluded. Four authors performed the search in independent pairs and conflicts were resolved by a fifth author using CovidenceTM systematic review software. Results: Following screening 6,652 titles and 235 full-text reviews, 48 papers were analysed. Eleven described original scores and 6 described modifications of published scores. Many were comprehensive but limited in capturing the full spectrum of disease. In 31 studies, a score was used to categorise patients to compare or correlate various outcome measures. Exocrine and endocrine dysfunction and pain were included in 6, 5, and 4 scoring systems, respectively. No score included other nutrition parameters, such as bone health, malnutrition, or nutrient deficiency. Only one score has been objectively validated prospectively and independently for monitoring clinical progression and prognosis, but this had been applied to an in-patient population. Conclusion: Available systems and scores do not reflect recent advances and guidelines in CP and are not commonly used. A practical clinical classification and scoring system, validated prospectively for prognostication would be useful for the meaningful analysis in observational and interventional studies in CP. Physical activity (PA) and exercise programmes are recommended for the management of fibromyalgia. Despite positive effects on symptoms and function, PA promotion remains a significant clinical challenge. Behaviour change theories and techniques are recommended as part of complex health interventions; their integration into interventions aimed at PA behaviour in people with fibromyalgia is not known. This review explored behaviour change interventions targeting PA in adults with fibromyalgia. A systematic review was conducted; randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials with at least one behaviour change intervention targeting PA were included. MEDLINE/OVID, EMBASE, PEDro, PsychINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and relevant conference abstracts were searched. Two authors independently screened studies for inclusion and performed risk of bias assessments. Articles were reviewed for their use of behaviour change theory and behaviour change techniques (BCTs). The search identified 2491 records, from which eight studies (1416 participants) were included. PA and exercise behaviours were the primary focus of four interventions and were components of broader interventions in four studies. Behaviour change theories informed four interventions. Thirty-two different BCTs were used across studies. Five studies reported improvements in PA either post-intervention or at follow-up. Two studies used objective PA measures and seven studies used self-report measures. Short-term benefits in pain, quality of life, and physical fitness were also observed. Behaviour change interventions targeting PA in people with fibromyalgia have had limited success to date. The article focuses on evidence on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of out-of-hours palliative care. Topics include the studies routinely report that a majority of people with life-limiting illness prefer to remain at home provided they can access appropriate services and supports, and the development of out-of-hours services should be guided by high-quality evidence, encompassing patient and public preferences, patient and carer outcomes.

Introduction and aims: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a collection of signs, symptoms and conditions affecting the pelvic floor and urinary incontinence (UI) is the most common type of PFD. Recent systematic reviews have indicated a higher prevalence of UI among female athletes compared to their non-athletic counterparts. To date, no review has been undertaken to investigate female athletes' experiences of PFD. This review aims to offer insight and understanding, through aggregation, summary, synthesis and interpretation of findings from studies that report elite female athletes' experiences of symptoms of PFD. Methods: The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO in August 2020. A systematic search was conducted in Embase, MEDLINE (OVID), Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science for studies published in the English language reporting elite female athletes' experiences of symptoms of PFD. This review included primary research studies that involved elite female athletes of any age or ethnicity. Results: Of the 1922 citations retrieved in the search, 32 studies met the methodological criteria for data extraction and analysis. Five main themes emerged: (1) triggers for symptoms of PFD; (2) strategies adopted by athletes to manage/mitigate symptoms of PFD; (3) impact on QOL/daily life; (4) impact on performance; (5) impact on emotions. Conclusions: The findings of this review suggest a need to further explore the experiences of PFD among elite female athletes and it is suggested that future research should adopt qualitative methods or incorporate a qualitative component. Background: Older patients are underrepresented in the clinical trials that determine the standards of care for oncological treatment. We conducted a review to identify whether there have been age-restrictive inclusion criteria in clinical trials over the last twenty five years, focusing on patients with metastatic gastroesophageal cancer.Methods: A search strategy was developed encompassing Embase, PubMed and The Cochrane Library databases. Completed phase III randomised controlled trials evaluating systemic anti-cancer therapies in metastatic gastroesophageal malignancies from 1st January 1995 to 18th November 2020 were identified. These were screened for eligibility using reference management software (Covidence; Veritas Health Innovation Ltd). Data including age inclusion/exclusion criteria and median age of participants were recorded. The percentage of patients ≥ 65 enrolled was collected where available. The change over time in the proportion of studies using an upper age exclusion was estimated using a linear probability model.Results: Three hundred sixty-three phase III studies were identified and screened, with 66 trials remaining for final analysis. The majority of trials were Asian (48%; n = 32) and predominantly evaluated gastric malignancies, (86%; n = 56). The median age of participants was 62 (range 18-94). Thirty-two percent (n = 21) of studies specified an upper age limit for inclusion and over half of these were Asian studies. The median age of exclusion was 75 (range 65-80). All studies prior to 2003 used an upper age exclusion (n = 12); whereas only 9 that started in 2003 or later did (17%). Among later studies, there was a very modest downward yearly-trend in the proportion of studies using an upper age exclusion (-0.02 per year; 95%CI -0.05 to 0.01; p = 0.31). Fifty-two percent (n = 34) of studies specified the proportion of their study population who were ≥ 65 years. Older patients represented only 36% of the trial populations in these studies (range 7-60%).Conclusions: Recent years have seen improvements in clinical trial protocols, with many no longer specifying restrictive age criteria. Reasons for poor representation of older patients are complex and ongoing efforts are needed to broaden eligibility criteria and prioritise the inclusion of older adults in clinical trials. Exercise has been shown to play an important role in managing chemotherapy-related side effects, preserving skeletal muscle mass, and attenuating decline in cardiorespiratory fitness associated with chemotherapy treatment, however, the feasibility of how these exercise programs are being delivered has yet to be synthesized. The objective of this review was to measure the rates of recruitment, adherence, and retention to exercise programs delivered for cancer patients during chemotherapy. Relevant studies were identified through a search of MEDLINE, Cochrane, EMBASE and CINAHL databases from January 2002 to July 2022 using keywords relating to exercise interventions during chemotherapy. Title and abstract screening, full text review, data extraction, and quality assessment were all performed independently by two reviewers. A total of 36 studies were included in the review. The mean recruitment rate for the included studies was 62.39% (SD = 19.40; range 25.7–95%). Travel was the most common reason for declining recruitment in these trials. Adherence rates ranged from 17–109%, however the definition of adherence varied greatly between studies. Mean retention rates for the exercise groups was 84.1% (SD = 12.7; range 50–100%), with chemotherapy side effects being the most common reason why participants dropped out of these trials. Multiple challenges exist for cancer patients during chemotherapy and careful consideration needs to be given when designing an exercise program for this population. Future research should include public and patient involvement to ensure exercise programs are pragmatic and patient centred. Purpose: Despite clear evidence-based supporting a benefit to exercise on physical and psychological metrics in patients with cancer, recruitment to exercise trials amongst cancer survivors is suboptimal. We explore current recruitment rates, strategies, and common barriers to participation in exercise oncology trials in cancer survivorship., Methods: A systematic review was conducted using a pre-defined search strategy in EMBASE, CINAHL, Medline, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. The search was performed up to 28/02/2022. Screening of titles and abstracts, full-text review, and data extraction was completed in duplicate., Results: Of the 3204 identified studies, 87 papers corresponding to 86 trials were included. Recruitment rates were highly variable with a median rate of 38% (range 0.52-100%). Trials recruiting prostate cancer patients only had the highest median recruitment rate (45.9%) vs trials recruiting colorectal cancer patients only which had the lowest (31.25%). Active recruitment strategies such as direct recruitment via a healthcare professional were associated with higher recruitment rates (rho = 0.201, p = 0.064). Common reasons for non-participation included lack of interest (46.51%, n (number of studies) = 40); distance and transport (45.3%, n = 39); and failure to contact (44.2%, n = 38)., Conclusions: Recruitment of cancer survivors to exercise interventions is suboptimal with barriers being predominantly patient-oriented. Objectives: Women who inherit a pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation are at substantially higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer than average. Several cancer risk management strategies exist to address this increased risk. Decisions about which strategies to choose are complex, personal and multifactorial for these women. Decision aids (DAs) are tools that assist patients in making health-related decisions. The aim of this scoping review was to map evidence relating to the development and testing of patient DAs for cancer unaffected BRCA mutation carriers., Design: Scoping review conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI's) scoping review methodological framework., Data Sources: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science. No restrictions applied for language or publication date. A manual search was also performed., Eligibility Criteria for Selecting Studies: Studies on DAs for cancer risk management designed for or applicable to women with a pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation who are unaffected by breast or ovarian cancer., Data Extraction and Synthesis: Data were extracted using a form based on the JBI instrument for extracting details of studies' characteristics and results. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers. Extracted data were tabulated., Results: 32 evidence sources relating to development or testing of 21 DAs were included. Four DAs were developed exclusively for cancer unaffected BRCA mutation carriers. Of these, two covered all guideline recommended risk management strategies for this population though only one of these was readily available publicly in its full version. Introduction: Connecting inactive individuals to local physical activity (PA) and exercise, via intermediaries (professionals who can facilitate and support connections to non-medical services) may be an effective method to tackle physical inactivity. Evidence regarding the processes of intermediaries, the profile of people referred, how connections to local PA and exercise are made and outcomes of these connections is lacking., Methods: This scoping review followed guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Searches of four electronic databases (Embase, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL) and an extensive grey literature search were conducted from inception to June 2022. Full-text studies which reported on community-dwelling adults (population), and the processes of intermediaries (concept) when connecting to local PA and exercise (context) were considered for inclusion. A logic model was created to map processes to outcomes. Evidence advances and gaps were identified., Results: N = 28 studies were identified. Participants referred to an intermediary were older, female, and with poorer health. Where possible, the processes of referral, assessment, follow-up and discharge by intermediaries were described, as well as the local PA and exercise services used. Short-term PA outcomes appeared positive after working with intermediaries, but many studies were poorly described, and the review was not designed to examine effectiveness of this intervention., Discussion/conclusion: Many aspects of the processes were poorly described. Introduction: Management of midlife blood pressure and hypertension status may provide a window of intervention to mitigate cognitive decline with advancing age. The aim of this review was to investigate the relationship between midlife hypertension and cognition in midlife and later life., Methods: Online electronic databases were searched from their inception to May 2022. Studies assessing midlife (40-65 years) hypertension and cognition at mid and/or later-life were included. A random effects meta-analysis was deemed appropriate., Results: One hundred forty-nine studies across 26 countries were included. Qualitative synthesis found negative relationships between midlife hypertension and later life cognition in the domains of memory, executive function, and global cognition. Metanalytical evidence revealed midlife hypertension negatively impacts memory, executive function, and global cognition but had no observed effect on attention at midlife., Discussion: Hypertension at midlife has a significant negative impact on cognition in mid-life and later life, namely memory, executive function, and global cognition., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Aim: Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are medicines for human use that are based on genes, tissues or cells. They offer groundbreaking new opportunities for the treatment of disease and injury. However, ATMP adoption requires adjustments to current clinical practices and frameworks. This study investigates the readiness of the Irish healthcare system to adopt licensed ATMPs. Materials & methods: Scoping review, guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses - scoping review extension. A systematic search of English articles from 2013 to 2023 (published and grey literature) will be conducted. Results: Findings will be presented via narrative summary, graphical and tabular formats. Discussion: Review findings will be discussed in the context of recommendations that will inform national policy and strategy on the adoption of ATMPs in Ireland.

Aims: To explore the impact of complex trauma on occupations and daily functioning in childhood through empirical studies and asses the extent and state of available evidence., Methods: The five-stage scoping review framework by Arksey and O'Malley and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR: Tricco et al.) were followed. EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched. Included studies were empirical research published in English up to December 2022, reporting on the impact of complex trauma on daily functioning or occupations in children experiencing such trauma, defined as prolonged exposure to interpersonal trauma arising within the primary caregiving system., Results: Eight studies were included. They reported impacts on personal and instrumental activities of daily living, sleep, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation. Some domains lacked comprehensive investigation, and studies lacked descriptions of specific effects on these areas., Conclusions: The review reveals a lack of robust empirical evidence on the impact of complex trauma on occupations and daily functioning in childhood, with limited depth for comprehensive analysis on the extent of children's occupational life impact. Further research is warranted to address identified gaps.

Background: Decision-making in palliative care usually involves both patients and family caregivers. However, how concordance and discordance in decision-making manifest and function between patients and family caregivers in palliative care is not well understood., Objectives: To identify key factors and/or processes which underpin concordance and/or discordance between patients and family caregivers with respect to their preferences for and decisions about palliative care; and ascertain how patients and family caregivers manage discordance in decision-making in palliative care., Methods: A systematic review and narrative synthesis of original studies published in full between January 2000 and June 2021 was conducted using the following databases: Embase; Medline; CINAHL; AMED; Web of Science; PsycINFO; PsycARTICLES; and Social Sciences Full Text., Results: After full-text review, 39 studies were included in the synthesis. Studies focused primarily on end-of-life care and on patient and family caregiver preferences for patient care. We found that discordance between patients and family caregivers in palliative care can manifest in relational conflict and can result from a lack of awareness of and communication about each other's preferences for care. Patients' advancing illness and impending death together with open dialogue about future care including advance care planning can foster consensus between patients and family caregivers., Conclusions: Patients and family caregivers in palliative care can accommodate each other's preferences for care. Health system resilience has never been more important than with the COVID-19 pandemic. There is need to identify feasible measures of resilience, potential strategies to build resilience and weaknesses of health systems experiencing shocks. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine how the resilience of health systems has been measured across various health system shocks. Following PRISMA guidelines, with double screening at each stage, the review identified 3175 studies of which 68 studies were finally included for analysis. Almost half (46%) were focused on COVID-19, followed by the economic crises, disasters and previous pandemics. Over 80% of studies included quantitative metrics. The most common WHO health system functions studied were resources and service delivery. In relation to the shock cycle, most studies reported metrics related to the management stage (79%) with the fewest addressing recovery and learning (22%). Common metrics related to staff headcount, staff wellbeing, bed number and type, impact on utilisation and quality, public and private health spending, access and coverage, and information systems. Limited progress has been made with developing standardised qualitative metrics particularly around governance. Quantitative metrics need to be analysed in relation to change and the impact of the shock. Background: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive inflammatory disorder of the pancreas. Sarcopenia is a degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength and is commonly associated with chronic pancreatitis. Regular physical activity and adequate functional fitness have been found to ameliorate the risk and effects of sarcopenia in other chronic diseases. The objective of this systematic review was to collate all the published evidence which has examined any type of physical activity as an intervention in the chronic pancreatitis patient population., Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The search strategy was designed by the medical librarian (DM) for Embase and then modified for the other search platforms. Two of the researchers (BM) and (AM) then performed the literature search using the databases Embase, Medline, CINAHL, and Web of Science., Results: An electronic identified a total of 571 references imported to Covidence as 420 when the duplicates (151) were removed. 420 titles were screened and 390 were removed as not relevant from their titles. 30 full text papers were selected and from these, only one full text paper was deemed suitable for inclusion., Conclusions: There is currently insufficient evidence to advise physical activity in the chronic pancreatitis population. Multidisciplinary meetings are an important part of cancer care and surgical planning. However, there is also an important educational role of MDMs in training the next generation of surgical oncologists. This systematic review (SR) aimed to examine the current educational role of the surgical oncology MDM and identify areas for improving educational value. Medline, OVID, EMBASE, CINHIL and Web of Science were searched using a predefined search strategy in keeping with the PRISMA statement. Data was analysed and synthesized in narrative format and thematic content analysis was performed. Three main groups of studies were identified, those with: 1. A simulated non-clinical MDM (3/13), 2. clinical MDMs with a defined educational intervention (1/13) and 3. observational studies that described the educational benefit of the clinical MDM with no intervention (9/13). Satisfaction rates were high and learning outcomes improved where an intervention to improve the educational content of the MDM had been implemented(simulated or non-simulated). Respondents considered the MDM a valuable tool for learning non-technical skills and training surgical oncologists and medical students. Using defined interventions e.g. debriefing post MDM, or simulation can improve the educational benefit for learners. Qualitative analysis identified clinical knowledge, decision making and the acquisition of non-technical skills as the key themes within included studies., (Copyright © 2022. Purpose: To determine the effect of resistance training during adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy in cancer patients on measures of lean mass and muscle strength. Secondary aims were to analyse the prescription and tolerability of supervised resistance training in this population., Methods: EMBASE, Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched from inception until 29 March 2021. Eligible randomised controlled trials (RCTs) examining supervised resistance training > 6 weeks duration during adjuvant chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy in cancer patients with objective measurement of muscle strength and/or lean mass were included. The meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.4., Results: A total of 1910 participants from 20 articles were included (mean age: 54 years, SD = 10) and the majority were female (76.5%). Resistance training was associated with a significant increase in upper body strength (standardised mean difference (SMD) = 0.57, 95% CI 0.36 to 0.79, I2 = 64%, P < 0.0001), lower body strength (SMD = 0.58, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.98, I2 = 91%, P = 0.005), grip strength (mean difference (MD) = 1.32, 95% CI 0.37 to 2.27, I2 = 0%, P < 0.01) and lean mass (SMD = 0.23, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.42, I2 = 0%, P = 0.02). Background: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has a poor prognosis; predictive markers of prognosis would facilitate advances in personalized therapy. C-reactive protein (CRP) and CRP-based scores are increasingly recommended across oncology; however, their role and value in EAC is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined CRP cut-point and scores and how they may best be applied in predicting survival in EAC., Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in EMBASE, Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane, Scopus and CINAHL databases, from inception to 1st October 2020. Studies reporting data from adults with EAC including adenocarcinoma of the gastro-esophageal junction (AEG), pre-treatment CRP or CRP-based score and Hazard Ratio (HR) for survival were included. QUIPS tool assessed risk of bias. Meta-analysis was undertaken., Results: A total of 819 records were screened. Eight papers were included, with data for 1475 people. CRP cut-points ranged from 2.8 to 10 mg/L. The Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) and modified GPS were the most commonly reported scores. On meta-analysis, elevated preoperative GPS/mGPS was significantly associated with worse overall survival (hazards ratio [HR] 1.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.25-2.62, p = 0.002); results were similar in subgroup analyses of multimodal treatment, M0 disease, and R0 resection., Conclusions: This is the first review to evaluate comprehensively the evidence for CRP and CRP-based scores in EAC. Meta-analysis demonstrated that elevated preoperative GPS or mGPS was significantly associated with reduced overall survival in EAC, including AEG. There is insufficient evidence to support use of CRP alone. Future studies should examine GPS/mGPS in EAC prospectively, alone and combined with other prognostic markers., (© 2021. Exercise prehabilitation prior to major surgery targets a reduction in postoperative complications through improved conditioning and respiratory function. However its effectiveness in cancer surgery is unclear. The objective of this review was to determine if preoperative high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improves preoperative fitness in patients scheduled for oncologic resection, and whether postoperative complications are impacted. METHODS: CINAHL, AMED, PEDro, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library and PubMed/MEDLINE were searched until April 2021 using predefined search strategy and accompanied by manual forward and backwards citation review. Screening of titles, abstracts, full-texts, data extraction, risk of bias assessment and methodologic quality was performed independently by two reviewers. Mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was compared and heterogeneity assessed using Chi Squared Test and I 2 statistic. Six randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the systematic review. Interventions prescribed bouts of high-intensity exercise [80-115% peak work rate (WRp)] interspaced with low-intensity (rest-50% WRp) exercise. The meta-analysis included five RCTs reporting peak oxygen consumption (VO 2peak ). Preoperative HIIT did not result in significantly higher VO 2peak in comparison to usual care or moderate intensity exercise (MD 0.83, 95%CI-0.51-2.17) kg/ml/min, p = 0.12). Studies were insufficiently powered with respect to postoperative complications, but there is no evidence of significant impact. No adverse events occurred and high adherence rates were reported. Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate there is insufficient evidence to support HIIT as a method of improving preoperative fitness prior to oncologic resection.
