102. Highly Electrocatalytic Ethylene Production from CO2on Nanodefective Cu Nanosheets

Abstract

The electrochemical synthesis of chemicals from carbon dioxide, which is an easily available and renewable carbon resource, is of great importance. However, to achieve high product selectivity for desirable C2products like ethylene is a big challenge. Here we design Cu nanosheets with nanoscaled defects (2–14 nm) for the electrochemical production of ethylene from carbon dioxide. A high ethylene Faradaic efficiency of 83.2% is achieved. It is proved that the nanoscaled defects can enrich the reaction intermediates and hydroxyl ions on the electrocatalyst, thus promoting C–C coupling for ethylene formation.

Abstract

Composites with hierarchical structures have wide potential applications in the catalyst industry. In this paper, a self-assembled 3D flower-like architecture of the Bi/γ-Fe2O3 composite has been successfully synthesized without employing any surfactants and templates via a facile and economical hydrothermal method. Its formation process has been studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy techniques were used to monitor the formation process. The results demonstrate that the self-assembled 3D flower-like Bi/γ-Fe2O3 composite consists of a Bi metal nucleus and a γ-Fe2O3 shell. The Bi metal nucleus is identified to be an aggregate of Bi nanoparticles, while the γ-Fe2O3 shell results from the intercrossing of γ-Fe2O3 nanoslices. The time-dependent intermediate products in the self-assembly process were structurally characterized. The influence of concentration and the formation process have been carefully discussed. A possible formation mechanism has been proposed. By virtue of the structural understanding of the novel 3D flower-like Bi/γ-Fe2O3 composite, this work is expected to highlight its potential applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To meet the demand for low-cost, lightweight, portable and building-integrated solar cells, developing flexible and cost-efficient photo-active hybrid films is of significant interest. In this work, we investigate the mechanical properties of hybrid layers consisting of mesoporous TiO2 filled with poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) as a function of the number of bending cycles. The TiO2/P3HT layers are deposited on flexible PET substrates at low temperatures (≤140 °C), which is beneficial for reducing the processing energy input and in turn lowering the production costs. Non-filled and partially filled mesoporous titania films are studied for comparison. The surface morphology is examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after the bending tests. The inner film morphology is characterized with grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). Based on the observed morphology, micromechanical models are used to analyze the mechanical properties of the investigated films. The results show that the TiO2/P3HT layers have a low elastic modulus and P3HT helps to stabilize the titania nanostructures against fracture. Abstract

Amorphous alloys are the glassy solids that are formed through the glass transition of high-temperature melts. They therefore inherit the long-ranger disorders of melts and many quenched-in defects such as free volume. This inevitably leads to structural heterogeneity on a nanoscale that is believed to be as fertile sites for initiating relaxation and flow. However, due to limitations of spatiotemporal measurements, experimental characterization of the nanoscale structural heterogeneity in amorphous alloys has faced a great challenges. In this paper, an in-situ tensile testing setup with synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering is designed for a Zr-based (Vitreloy 1) amorphous alloy. By the small angle X-ray scattering, the structural heterogeneity of the Vitreloy 1 amorphous alloy can be described by the fluctuation of electron density. The small angle scattering images are recorded with the charge coupled device (CCD) detector, and then are azimuthally integrated into the one-dimensional scattering intensity curves using the FIT2D software. We apply the Porod law, Guinier law and Debye law to the obtained scattering intensity curves, and attempt to obtain the information about structural heterogeneity in the Vitreloy 1 amorphous alloy at different stress levels.The results indicate that the scattering intensity curve of the Vitreloy 1 amorphous alloy exhibits the positive deviation of Porod law. This observation proves that the amorphous alloy belongs to the non-ideal two-phase system, corresponding to the complicated spatial distribution between soft/liquid-like and hard/solid-like phases. According to the Porod's law, it is revealed that the diffuse interface exists between the two phases, associated with the density fluctuations in either of phases. Furthermore, we demonstrate that different scatterers coexist in the amorphous alloy and their characteristic sizes measured by the radius of gyration are mainly distributed between 0.8 nm and 1.6 nm. It deserves to note that the range of radii of gyration of scatterers are close to the equivalent sizes (1.3–1.9 nm) of shear transformation zones (STZs) for plastic flow in amorphous alloys. In addition, the shape of scatterer is far from a sphere, reminiscent of STZ activation regions of flat discs. It is therefore concluded that the scatterers with larger gyration radius correspond to the soft regions for the potential STZs, while those with smaller gyration radius correspond to the hard regions with lower free volume concentration. Finally, based on the correlation function defined by Debye, we analyze the correlation of electron density fluctuation between two arbitrary scatterers. The result indicates that the nanoscale scatterers in the amorphous alloy are strongly correlated only within a range of about 1 nm, which is consistent with the short-range ordered and long-range disordered structural features of the amorphous alloy. The image of the nanoscale heterogeneous structures characterized by the small angle X-ray scattering is almost not changed in the elastic deformation stage of the amorphous alloy. The present findings increase our understanding of the nanoscale structural heterogeneity in amorphous alloys, which is an important step to describe glass flow and relaxation.

Herein we propose for the first time the utilization of a metal complex for forming water-in-supercritical CO2 (scCO2) microemulsions. The water solubility in the metal-complex-stabilized microemulsion is significantly improved compared with the conventional water-in-scCO2 microemulsions stabilized by hydrocarbons. Abstract

The cricket is a truculent insect with stiff and sharp teeth as a fighting weapon. The structure and possible biomineralization of cricket teeth are always interesting. Synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and small angle X-ray scattering techniques were used to probe the element distribution, possible crystalline structures and size distribution of scatterers in cricket teeth. A scanning electron microscope was used to observe the nanoscaled structure. The results demonstrate that Zn is the main heavy element in cricket teeth. The surface of a cricket tooth has a crystalline compound like ZnFe2(AsO4)2(OH)2(H2O)4. The interior of the tooth has a crystalline compound like ZnCl2, which is from the biomineralization. The ZnCl2-like biomineral forms nanoscaled microfibrils and their axial direction points towards the top of the tooth cusp. The microfibrils aggregate randomly into intermediate filaments, forming a hierarchical structure. A sketch map of the cricket tooth cusp is proposed and a detailed discussion is given in this paper.

142. Correction of distorted X-ray absorption spectra collected with capillary sample cell

Abstract

In certain exceptional cases, capillary samples must be used to measure X-ray absorption spectra (XAS). However, the inhomogeneous thickness of capillary samples causes XAS distortion. This study discusses the distortion and correction of the XAS curve caused by the inhomogeneous thickness of capillary samples. The relationship between the distorted XAS curve μ′deq(measured values) and the real absorption coefficient μsdeq(true values) of the sample was established. The distortion was slight and negligible when the vertical size (2h) of the X-ray beam spot was smaller than 60% of the capillary tube’s inner diameter (2Rin). When h/Rin> 1, X-ray leakage is inevitable and should be avoided during measurement. Partial X-ray leakage caused by an X-ray beam spot size larger than the inner diameter of the capillary tube leads to serious compressed distortion of the XAS curve. When h/Rin< 1, the distorted XAS data were well corrected. Possible errors and their influence on the corrected XAS are also discussed. Simulations and corrections for distortions verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the corrected method.
