Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which operate on a variety of green fuels, can achieve high power without emitting greenhouse gases. However, the lack of high ionic conductivity and long-term durability of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) as their key components is a major obstacle hindering the commercial application of AEMFCs. Here, a series of homogeneous semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) AEMs formed by cross-linking a copolymer of styrene (St) and 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) with branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) were designed. The pure carbon copolymer skeleton without sulfone/ether bonds accompanied by the semi-IPN endows the AEMs with excellent chemical stability. Flower color is a key trait that determines the ornamental quality of aquatic lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). Color fading significantly decreases the ornamental value of lotus flowers. However, the molecular mechanism underlying lotus petal discoloration remains largely unknown. Here, the anthocyanin content and global transcriptional profiling of lotus petals of cultivar 'Qiusanse' in four developmental stages were analyzed. Five anthocyanin components were detected, and the total anthocyanin content decreased as the petal color changed from red to nearly white. Moreover, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and peroxidase (POD) activity increased during color fading. RNA-seq analysis revealed a total of 4,092 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between petal developmental stages. Notably, oxidoreductase and hydrolase activity related genes were overrepresented in DEGs. The expression pattern of key anthocyanin biosynthesis genes including, CHS, F3H, ANS, UFGT, and transcription factor regulators, including MYBs, WRKYs and bHLHs were correlated with anthocyanin accumulation. Interestingly, DEGs associated with anthocyanin degradation and vacuolar pH regulation, including peroxidase, proton pumps regulators such as WRKY3 and MYB5-like, were significantly upregulated during the late stages of flowering. This study reveals for the first time the transcriptional dynamics during lotus petal discoloration. Our results suggest the involvement of anthocyanin biosynthesis repressors and degrading genes as well as pH regulators in controlling color fading of lotus petals. The study also provides valuable information and candidate genes for improving the lotus flower color.

Unmitigated climate change will likely produce major problems for human populations worldwide. Although many researchers and policy-makers believe that drought may be an important “push” factor underlying migration in the future, the precise relationship between drought and migration remains unclear. This article models the potential scope of such movements for the emissions policy choices facing all nation-states today. Applying insights from climate science and computational modeling to migration research, we examine the likely surge of drought-induced migration and assess the prospects of different policy scenarios to mitigate involuntary displacement. Using an ensemble of 16 climate models in conjunction with high-resolution geospatial population data and different policy scenarios, we generate drought projections worldwide and estimate the potential for internal and international population movement due to extreme droughts through the remainder of the 21st century. Our simulations suggest that a potential for drought-induced migration increases by approximately 200 percent under the current international policy scenario (corresponding to the current Paris Agreement targets). In contrast, total migration increases by almost 500 percent, should current international cooperation fail and should unrestricted policies toward greenhouse gas emissions prevail. We argue that despite the continued growth projections of drought-induced migration in all cases, international cooperation on climate change can substantially reduce the global potential for such migration, in contrast to unilateral policy approaches to energy demands. This article highlights the importance of modeling future environmental migrations, in order to manage the pressures and unprecedented policy challenges which are expected to dramatically increase under conditions of unmitigated climate change.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a severe orthopedic disease commonly observed in the elderly population and is closely related to the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in cartilage tissues. Interleukin-29 (IL-29) is a cytokine that has been recently linked with the progression of OA. However, the physiological roles of IL-29 in ECM genes and function are unknown. Linagliptin is a novel dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor recently reported to exert significant anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we used IL-29 to stimulate C-28/I2 chondrocytes to build an inflammatory injury model. We aimed to investigate the protective effect of Linagliptin on IL-29-induced degradation of ECM. We found that IL-29 stimulation reduced the expressions of Col2a1 and Acan in C-28/I2 chondrocytes, and this effect was mediated by SRY-related high-mobility group box gene-9 (SOX-9), as we showed that overexpression of SOX-9 could rescue the reduction of Col2a1 and Acan. Interestingly, we found that IL-29 stimulation pronouncedly promoted the expression of DPP-4. Treatment with 100 nM of the DPP-4 inhibitor Linagliptin ameliorated IL-29-induced expressions of SOX-9, Col2a1, and Acan. Lastly, the nuclear level of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) was dramatically declined in IL-29-challenged chondrocytes and the protective effects of Linagliptin on the expressions of SOX-9, Col2a1, and Acan were abolished by the knockdown of Nrf2. Taken together, our data reveal that Linagliptin ameliorated IL-29-induced reduction of ECM genes partially through the Nrf2/SOX-9 axis in C-28/I2 chondrocytes. Further in vivo and clinical studies will be done to clarify the protective benefits of Linagliptin in OA.

The gradient porous Ti3Zr2Sn3Mo25Nb (TLM) alloy rods were fabricated through sintering the alloyed powder to a solid core. The porous sample was then modified by a Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) treatment in an electrolyte containing calcium and phosphate, a hydrothermal treatment enabled secondary microporous hydroxyapatite (HA) coating, and a further bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) loading treatment through immersion and freeze-drying. The treatment led to an orderly secondary microporous coating containing HA nano-particles and evenly distributed BMP-2 in the porous coatings. As a result, osteoblasts could adhere and grow well on the coatings with a high cell adhesion rate and cell functional activity. The in-situ shear testing indicated that the interfacial strength had been enhanced significantly. Improvement of the bond formation and osseointegration with the titanium implant is attributed to increased surface area for the cell to attach, creating voids for the cell to grow in, and activating titanium surface by introducing bioactive ingredients such as HA and BMP-2.

Terrestrial ecosystems are an important part of Earth systems, and they are undergoing remarkable changes in response to global warming. This study investigates the response of the terrestrial vegetation distribution and carbon fluxes to global warming by using the new dynamic global vegetation model in the second version of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Earth System Model (CAS-ESM2). We conducted two sets of simulations, a present-day simulation and a future simulation, which were forced by the present-day climate during 1981–2000 and the future climate during 2081–2100, respectively, as derived from RCP8.5 outputs in CMIP5. CO2 concentration is kept constant in all simulations to isolate CO2-fertilization effects. The results show an overall increase in vegetation coverage in response to global warming, which is the net result of the greening in the mid-high latitudes and the browning in the tropics. The results also show an enhancement in carbon fluxes in response to global warming, including gross primary productivity, net primary productivity, and autotrophic respiration. We found that the changes in vegetation coverage were significantly correlated with changes in surface air temperature, reflecting the dominant role of temperature, while the changes in carbon fluxes were caused by the combined effects of leaf area index, temperature, and precipitation. This study applies the CAS-ESM2 to investigate the response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate warming. Even though the interpretation of the results is limited by isolating CO2-fertilization effects, this application is still beneficial for adding to our understanding of vegetation processes and to further improve upon model parameterizations.

Deep placement of nitrogen fertilizer is a key strategy for improving nitrogen use efficiency. A two-year field experiment was conducted during the early rice growing seasons (March–July) of 2016 and 2017. The experimental treatments comprised two rice cultivars: Wufengyou 615 (WFY 615) and Yuxiangyouzhan (YXYZ), and three N treatments: mechanical deep placement of all fertilizers as basal dose at 10 cm soil depth (one-time deep-placement fertilization, namely OTDP fertilization); manual surface broadcast (the common farmer practice) of 40% N fertilizer at one day before sowing (basal fertilizer) followed by broadcast application of 30% each at tillering and panicle initiation stages; and no fertilizer application at any growth stage as a control. One-time deep-placement fertilization increased grain yield of both rice cultivars by 11.8%–19.6%, total nitrogen accumulation by 10.3%–13.1%, nitrogen grain production efficiency by 29.7%–31.5%, nitrogen harvest index by 27.8%–30.0%, nitrogen agronomic efficiency by 71.3%–77.2%, and nitrogen recovery efficiency by 42.4%–56.7% for both rice cultivars, compared with the multiple-broadcast treatment. One-time deep-placement fertilization reduced CH4-induced global warming potential (GWP) by 20.7%–25.3%, N2O-induced GWP by 7.2%–12.3%, and total GWP by 14.7%–22.9% for both rice cultivars relative to the multiple-broadcast treatment. The activities of glutamine synthetase and nitrate reductase were increased at both panicle-initiation and heading stages in both rice cultivars following one-time deep-placement fertilization treatment. Larger leaf area index at heading stage and more favorable root morphological traits expressed as larger total root length, mean root diameter, and total root volume per hill were also observed. One-time deep-placement fertilization could be an effective strategy for increasing grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency and lowering greenhouse-gas emissions under mechanical direct-seeded cropping systems.

Optical aberrations introduced by sample or system elements usually degrade the image quality of a microscopic imaging system. Computational adaptive optics has unique advantages for 3D biological imaging since neither bulky wavefront sensors nor complicated indirect wavefront sensing procedures are required. In this paper, a stochastic parallel gradient descent computational adaptive optics method is proposed for high-efficiency aberration correction in the fluorescent incoherent digital holographic microscope. The proposed algorithm possesses the advantage of parallelly estimating various aberrations with fast convergence during the iteration; thus, the wavefront aberration is corrected quickly, and the original object image is retrieved accurately. Owing to its high-efficiency adaptive optimization, the proposed method exhibits better performances for a 3D sample with complex and anisotropic optical aberration. The proposed method can be a powerful tool for the visualization of dynamic events that happen inside cells or thick tissues.

Data assimilation (DA) at mesoscales is important for severe weather forecasts, yet the techniques of data assimilation at this scale remain a challenge. This study introduces dynamical constraints in the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) three-dimensional ensemble variational (3D-EnVar) data assimilation algorithm to enable the use of high-resolution surface observations of precipitation to improve atmospheric analysis at mesoscales. The constraints use the conservations of mass and moisture. Mass constraint suppresses the unphysical high-frequency oscillation, while moisture conservation constrains the atmospheric states to conform with the observed high-resolution precipitation. We show that the constrained data assimilation (CDA) algorithm significantly reduced the spurious residuals of the mass and moisture budgets compared to the original data assimilation (ODA). A case study is presented for a squall line over the Southern Great Plains on 20 May 2011 during Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E) of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program by using ODA or CDA analysis as initial condition of forecasts. The state variables, and the location and intensity of the squall line are better simulated in the CDA experiment. Results show how surface observation of precipitation can be used to improve atmospheric analysis through data assimilation by using the dynamical constraints of mass and moisture conservations.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread in the environment and pose a serious threat to the soil ecosystem. In order to better understand the health risks for residents exposed to PAH-contaminated soil, 173 surface soil samples were collected in Shanxi Province, China, to detect the levels of 16 priority PAHs. The spatial distribution patterns of PAHs were explored using interpolation and spatial clustering analysis, and the probable sources of soil PAHs were identified for different land-use covers. The results indicate that the soil Σ16 PAH concentration ranged from 22.12 to 1337.82 ng g−1, with a mean of 224.21 ng g−1. The soils were weakly to moderately contaminated by high molecular weight PAHs (3–5 ring) and the Taiyuan–Linfen Basin was the most polluted areas. In addition, the concentration of soil PAHs on construction land was higher than that on other land-use covers. Key sources of soil PAHs were related to industrial activities dominated by coal burning, coking, and heavy traffic. Based on the exposure risk assessment of PAHs, more than 10% of the area was revealed to be likely to suffer from high carcinogenic risks for children. The study maps the high-risk distribution of soil PAHs in Shanxi Province and provides PAH pollution reduction strategies for policy makers to prevent adverse health risks to residents.

Future changes of regional precipitation are of great scientific and societal interests. Large uncertainties still exist in their projections by models. Mechanistic understanding is therefore necessary. Here we demonstrate robust features of the percentage change of precipitation normalized to surface temperature change (%/K) under global warming, referred to as scaling of precipitation with temperature in East Asia. We find that land precipitation in the summer scales at ~3%/K, well below the scaling rate of the Clausius-Clapeyron relationship for atmospheric water vapor content, but the scaling in winter is comparable to the Clausius-Clapeyron scaling at ~7%/K. By using moisture budget analysis of model simulations, we show that this scaling and the seasonal contrast can be clearly attributed to the robust climate changes of steeping moisture gradient, weakening westerly jets, and increasing hydrological amplitude of atmospheric eddies. Precipitation responses to climate warming in East Asia differ between summer and winter as a result of steepening atmospheric moisture gradients, weakening westerlies and a higher hydrological amplitude in atmospheric eddies, according to climate model simulations.

Different fertilization methods will affect rice yield and its growth. To address the influence of different fertilization methods on yield, photosynthetic intensity, and nitrogen synthetase enzymatic activities for hill direct-seeded rice, the field trials were conducted using two different rice varieties Yuxiangyouzhan and Wufengyou 615 in 2018 and 2019. There were four fertilizer application treatments at the rate of 150 kg N ha−1 in hill direct-seeded rice: All the fertilizer deep application as a disposable basal fertilizer by machine (T1); deep application of mechanized decrement fertilizers, i.e. 50% of all fertilizers into 10 cm depth of soil as basal by machine, whilst 25% of fertilizers at tillering stage and 25% of the fertilizer in the panicle initiation (PI) stage were artificially sown on the soil surface (T2), respectively; farmers’ manually traditional surface broadcast, i.e. 40% of the fertilizers as the basal fertilizer, whilst 30% of fertilizers was applied at tillering and PI stage (T3), respectively, and the control treatment is no fertilization (T0). The result showed that grain yield of Yuxiangyouzhan and Wufengyou 615 for T2 was increased by 25.79 and 11.98%, compared with T3, respectively. The rate of photosynthetic, water use efficiency and stomatal conductance for T2 treatment was 35.86, 27.32, and 56.87% higher than that for T0 treatment, respectively. It was also found that T2 had the highest chlorophyll and carotenoids during the heading stage (HS). We also observed that glutamine systhetase (GS) and glutamate synhthase (GOGAT) activities of T2 were higher than T3 at mid-tillering stage for both rice varieties, respectively. Among all treatments at the HS, Wufengyou 615 had the largest leaf area index and total above-ground biomass. Hence, the present study revealed that 50% of total amount of fertilization as basal fertilization deep placement with the rest of fertilization as topdressing more benefited the rice growth and produced more grain yield.

Gravity and magnetic data have unique advantages for studying the lateral extents of geologic bodies. There is a class of methods for edge recognition called maximum-edge-recognition methods (MERMs) that use their extreme values to locate the edges of geologic bodies. These methods include the total horizontal derivative (THDR), the analytic signal amplitude, the theta map, and the normalized standard deviation. These are all first-order derivative-based techniques. There are also higher-order derivative-based methods that are derived from the first-order filters, for example, the THDR of the tilt angle. We have developed an edge-recognition filter that is based on the idea of the normalized vertical derivatives (VDRs) of existing methods. For each MERM, we first calculate its nth-order VDR and then use thresholding to locate its peaks. The peak values are subsequently normalized by the values of the original MERM. Testing on synthetic and real data indicates that the normalized VDRs of the MERMs have higher accuracy and better lateral resolution and they are more interpretable than existing techniques; thus, they are a worthwhile addition to the set of edge-detection tools for potential-field data.

Identifying the sources and transformations of riverine nitrate plays a critical role in mitigating nitrogen enrichment of river networks. Several previous studies have used δ18O-NO3− to quantitatively assess riverine nitrate contributed by atmospheric nitrate and terrestrial sources, but their results have great uncertainty due to the wide range of δ18O-NO3− values and isotopic fractionation during nitrogen-cycling processes in terrestrial environment. The nitrate 17O anomaly (△17O-NO3−), as an unambiguous tracer of atmospheric nitrate, is a promising tool to effectively separate atmospheric nitrate from microbially produced nitrate. However, to our knowledge, △17O-NO3− approach has not been previously applied to identify nitrate pollution sources in plain river networks of eastern China. In this study, we used a multiple isotope approach (δD/δ18O-H2O and δ15N/δ18O/△17O-NO3−) for the first time to quantitatively identify sources and transformations of riverine nitrate in a hypereutrophic coastal plain river network namely Wen-Rui Tang River located in eastern China, which is a region receiving high inputs of atmospheric nitrogen deposition. The △17O-NO3− values in precipitation and river water during the study period (April–June of 2021) varied from 14.83‰ to 31.39‰ and from − 2.82‰ to 9.66‰, respectively. The δD/δ18O-H2O values revealed that river water mainly originated from recent precipitation with little evaporation. Moreover, the δ15N/δ18O-NO3− values indicated that microbial nitrification, not denitrification, was the predominant nitrogen-cycling process in the watershed. Based on a Bayesian mixing model (Stable Isotope Analysis in R, SIAR) using δ15N/△17O-NO3−, municipal sewage was identified as the dominant nitrate source (50.5 ± 11.7%), followed by soil nitrogen (23.8 ± 13.7%), atmospheric nitrate deposition (14.3 ± 2.9%), and nitrogen fertilizer (11.4 ± 8.7%). Finally, an uncertainty analysis for nitrate source apportionment demonstrated that the greatest uncertainty was associated with soil nitrogen, followed by municipal sewage, nitrogen fertilizer, and atmospheric nitrate deposition. This study provides important scientific information on riverine nitrate source apportionment to guide pollution control/remediation strategies and highlights the benefits of utilizing △17O-NO3− to enhance nitrate source apportionment.

Sinking of microplastics (MPs) after biofouling is considered an important mechanisms responsible for the downward transport/sedimentation of MPs in the ocean and freshwaters. Previous studies demonstrated MP sinking caused by an increase in the composite density of MPs after biofouling, while MPs with smaller size or shapes with higher surface area to volume ratios (SA:V), such as films, are speculated to sink faster. In this study, we designed an in situ microcosm to simulate the ambient environmental conditions experienced by floating MPs to elucidate the biofouling and sinking of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and expanded-polystyrene (EPS) MPs of various sizes and shapes. Our results showed smaller PE and PP MP granules sank faster than large ones. Even EPS granules of 100μm diameter, having a much lower density (0.02mg/mm3) than water, started to sink after 2 weeks of biofouling. Moreover, PE film and fiber MPs with higher SA:V did not sink faster than PE MP granules of the same mass, implying that mechanisms other than SA:V, such as fouling contact area and drag coefficient, play a role in the regulation of biofouling and sinking of MPs.

Currently, the industrial application of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) that are incubated with natural electrochemically active microbes (EABs) is limited due to inefficient extracellular electron transfer (EET) by natural EABs. Notably, recent studies have identified several novel living biomaterials comprising highly efficient electron transfer systems allowing unparalleled proficiency of energy conversion. Introduction of these biomaterials into BESs could fundamentally increase their utilization for a wide range of applications. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of recent advancements in the design of living biomaterials that can be exploited to enhance bioelectrocatalytic performance. Further, modular configurations of abiotic and biotic components promise a powerful enhancement through integration of nano-based artificial mediators and synthetic biology. Herein, recent advancements in BESs are synthesized and assessed, including heterojunctions between conductive nanomaterials and EABs, in-situ hybrid self-assembly of EABs and nano-sized semiconductors, cytoprotection in biohybrids, synthetic biological modifications of EABs and electroactive biofilms. Since living biomaterials comprise a broad range of disciplines, such as molecular biology, electrochemistry and material sciences, full integration of technological advances applied in an interdisciplinary framework will greatly enhance/advance the utility and novelty of BESs. Overall, emerging fundamental knowledge concerning living biomaterials provides a powerful opportunity to markedly boost EET efficiency and facilitate the industrial application of BESs to meet global sustainability challenges/goals.

Tides play an important role in ocean energy transfer and mixing, and provide major energy for maintaining thermohaline circulation. This study proposes a new explicit tidal scheme and assesses its performance in a global ocean model. Instead of using empirical specifications of tidal amplitudes and frequencies, the new scheme directly uses the positions of the moon and sun in a global ocean model to incorporate tides. Compared with the traditional method that has specified tidal constituents, the new scheme can better simulate the diurnal and spatial characteristics of the tidal potential of spring and neap tides as well as the spatial patterns and magnitudes of major tidal constituents (K1 and M2). It significantly reduces the total errors of eight tidal constituents (with the exception of N2 and Q1) in the traditional explicit tidal scheme, in which the total errors of K1 and M2 are reduced by 21.85 % and 32.13 %, respectively. Relative to the control simulation without tides, both the new and traditional tidal schemes can lead to better dynamic sea level (DSL) simulation in the North Atlantic, reducing significant negative biases in this region. The new tidal scheme also shows smaller positive bias than the traditional scheme in the Southern Ocean. The new scheme is suited to calculate regional distributions of sea level height in addition to tidal mixing.

Using shape-persistent Janus particles to construct poly(Janus particle)s and studying their self-assembly behaviors are of great interest, but remain largely unexplored. The influence of early spring sea ice at Barents Sea on midsummer rainfall in Northeast China (NEC) is identified based on observational analyses and atmospheric modeling experiments in this study. Increased sea ice area (SIA) in the Barents Sea is ensued by positive rainfall anomalies at north of NEC and by negative anomalies at south, and vice verse. Specifically, due to a good seasonal persistence from spring to summer, the preceding sea ice anomalies exert an impact on midsummer surface air temperature anomalies and vertical stability over Barents Sea via the modulation on turbulent heat flux. The anomalous circulation is further triggered over Europe and the Mediterranean Sea through meridional vertical cells, with a barotropic structure. Accordingly, an effective Rossby wave source is excited over the eastern Mediterranean by the advection of vorticity by divergence wind, and causes an eastward propagation of Silk Road Pattern to East Asia. In addition, another SIA-related wave-like train can diffuse directly southeastward from Arctic to NEC in a polar path. Observations and numerical simulations indicate that, in response to increased sea ice at Barents Sea, an anomalous cyclone emerges over NEC, along with easterly or southeasterly over north of NEC and with northwesterly over south, leading to moisture convergence anomalies at north and divergence anomalies at south. Jointly, ascending (descending) motion anomalies favors a wet (dry) summer over north (south) of NEC.

The prediction of wintertime extratropical cyclone activity (ECA) on subseasonal time scales by models participating in the Subseasonal Experiment (SubX) and the Seasonal to Subseasonal Prediction (S2S) is assessed. Consistent with a previous study that investigated the S2S models, the SubX models have skillful predictions of ECA over regions from central North Pacific across North America to western North Atlantic, as well as East Asia and northern and southern part of eastern North Atlantic at 3–4 weeks lead time. SubX provides daily mean data, while S2S provides instantaneous data at 0000 UTC each day. This leads to different variance of ECA. Different S2S and SubX models have different reforecast initialization times and reforecast time periods. These factors can all lead to differences in prediction skill. To fairly compare the prediction skill between different models, we develop a novel way to evaluate the prediction of individual model across the two ensembles by comparing every model to the Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2), as CFSv2 has 6-hourly output and forecasts initialized every day. Among the S2S and SubX models, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model exhibits the best prediction skill, followed by CFSv2. Our results also suggest that while the prediction skill is sensitive to forecast lead time, including forecasts up to 4 days old into the ensemble may still be useful for weeks 3–4 predictions of ECA.

Incoherent optical cryptosystem is promising for its immunity against coherent noise and insensitivity to misalignment, and compressive encryption is desirable considering the increasingly demand on the exchange of encrypted data via Internet. In this paper, we propose a novel optical compressive encryption approach with spatially incoherent illumination based on deep learning (DL) and space multiplexing. For encryption, the plaintexts are individually sent to the scattering-imaging-based encryption (SIBE) scheme where they are transformed to scattering images with noise appearances. Afterwards, these images are randomly sampled and then integrated into a single package (i.e., ciphertext) by space multiplexing. The decryption is basically the inverse of the encryption, while it involves an ill-posed problem (i.e., recovering the noise-like scattering image from its randomly sampled version). We demonstrated that such a problem can be well resolved by DL. The proposal is radically free from the cross-talk noise existing in many current multiple-image encryption schemes. Also, it gets rid of the linearity bothering the SIBE and is hence robust against the ciphertext-only attack based on phase retrieval algorithm. We present a series of experimental results to confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposal.
