Patient registries have great potential for providing data that describe the natural history, epidemiology, disease burden, treatments, and outcomes. The Japan Renal Biopsy Registry (J-RBR) was started in 2007 and the Japan Kidney Disease Registry (J-KDR) was then started in 2009 by the Japanese Society of Nephrology. Analysis of the J-RBR/J-KDR identified clinical factors associated with the different diagnosis of renal disease in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, the Japan Diabetic Nephropathy Cohort Study (JDNCS), a nationwide observational study for adult Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes and clinically suspected diabetic nephropathy, was initiated in 2009. Analysis of the JDNCS demonstrated the association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria at baseline or during follow-up and outcomes.
