Dietary factors are known to influence urinary fluoride (UF) levels in nonpregnant people. Maternal UF is used as a biomarker of fluoride exposure; however, dietary influences on UF during pregnancy are unknown. We compared UF levels and assessed the associations between UF and five select dietary influences in pregnancy vs. one-year postpartum: dietary fluoride (F), calcium intake from diet (Ca-diet), calcium intake from supplements (Ca-sup), dietary acid load (AL), and table salt use (TS) in 421 women exposed to fluoridated salt in the Mexican diet. Spot UF (mg/L) was measured by microdiffusion/fluoride-specific electrode and dilution-corrected with specific gravity (SG). Dietary variables were estimated from a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. Comparisons among UF in pregnancy vs. one-year postpartum were performed with non-parametric tests. Associations between dietary variables and UF were assessed using random effect models (for pregnancy) and linear regression (for one-year postpartum). SG-corrected UF (median, range) during pregnancy (0.77, 0.01–4.73 mg/L) did not significantly differ from one-year postpartum (0.75, 0.15–2.62 mg/L) but did increase every 10 gestational weeks, β = 0.05 (CI: 0.00–0.10). Different dietary influences on UF were identified at each state. Although Ca-diet and AL were not associated with UF in either state, Ca-sup decreased UF only during pregnancy, β = − 0.012 mg/L (CI: − 0.023–0.00). Reporting TS use was associated with 12% increase in UF only at one-year postpartum (p = 0.026). These results suggest different dietary influences on UF in the pregnant state, which need consideration when using UF as a biomarker of fluoride exposure.

Objective:To estimate dietary fluoride intake (F) over the course of pregnancy and the overall adjusted difference in dietary F intake by pregnancy stages and levels of compliance with dietary recommendations.Design:Secondary data analysis from a longitudinal pregnancy cohort study in a population exposed to fluoridated salt. Women were followed during the early, middle and late stages of their pregnancy (n 568). The dietary intake of recommended prenatal nutrients according to Mexican dietary guidelines and F intake (mg/d) was estimated with a validated FFQ. Data were summarised with descriptive statistics. Levels of F intake were compared with the USA’s Institute of Medicine adequate intake (AI) of 3 mg/d for pregnancy. Adjusted differences in F intake by pregnancy stages and levels of compliance with recommendations were estimated using random effects models.Setting:Mexico City.Participants:Women participating in the Early Life Exposures in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) project, from 2001 to 2003.Results:Median dietary F intake throughout pregnancy ranged from 0·64 (interquartile range (IQR) 0·38) in the early to 0·70 (IQR 0·42) in the middle, and 0·72 (IQR 0·44) mg/d in the late stage (0·01 mg F/kg per d). Corresponding adjusted intakes of F were 0·72 (95 % CI 0·70, 0·74), 0·76 (95 % CI 0·74, 0·77) and 0·80 (95 % CI 0·78, 0·82) mg/d. Women who were moderately and highly compliant with Mexican dietary recommendations ingested, on average, 0·04 and 0·14 mg F/d more than non-compliant women (P < 0·005).Conclusions:Dietary F intake was below current AI, was greater with the progression of pregnancy and in women who were moderately and highly compliant with dietary recommendations.

Background Gummy smile (GS) is a nonpathological condition causing esthetic disharmony in which an excessive amount of gingival tissue is exposed when smiling. Nowadays, there is not unanimous agreement regarding both classification and management of GS. This study aimed to present an organized and comprehensive clinical classification of the GS, as well as to discuss a therapeutic approach, with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Methods This study is presenting the clinical experience of the authors regarding GS. Results The Mercado-Rosso GS classification has into account aesthetic aspects, etiopathogenetic criteria, and functional aspects of the smile. According to Mercado-Rosso GS-classification-system, GS is divided into 3-types: Type 1, characterized by a lack of support and/or a lack of projection of the upper maxilla; Type 2, due to an imbalance between the strength (excess) and the resistance (defect) of the levator muscles; and Type 3, defined by an excessive strength of the zygomatic muscles, which causes a wide smile and an excessive visualization of the molar teeth. Conclusions The Mercado-Rosso GS classification system is a tool that facilitates the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the gummy smile. El síndrome de Cronos ha sido poco estudiado. Este es un síndrome que afecta tanto a las empresas como a sus empleados en una gama de circunstancias y escenarios variados. El propósito de este estudio fue analizar las propiedades psicométricas de la Escala de Percepción del Síndrome de Cronos. Se obtuvo una muestra de 204 empleados de diversas zonas de Puerto Rico con edades entre los 21 y 70 años; el 71.1 % eran féminas y el 28.9 % varones. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que la escala posee una estructura bifactorial: factor 1; control, con .92 y factor 2; miedo con .86 de consistencia interna mediante el coeficiente alfa de Cronbach. Se utilizaron los valores Eigen como criterio para identificar factores, así como la prueba Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin para medir adecuacidad y el Chi-cuadrado de la esfericidad de Bartlett. Se examinó la estructura factorial utilizando el método de extracción de ejes principales y rotación oblicua, logrando obtener una escala con excelentes propiedades psicométricas. Estos resultados aportan una escala robusta que puede ser utilizada para estudiar el síndrome de Cronos.

Es muy poco lo que se sabe sobre la disponibilidad de los datos mexicanos relativos a la contaminación ambiental y menos aún sobre su calidad. El objetivo del presente documento, entonces, es precisamente dar un paso en este conocimiento, mediante una evaluación en temas selectos, siguiendo un método de la escala de Likert. Los temas estudiados son: la contaminación del agua, las emisiones a la atmósfera, los residuos sólidos y la contaminación generada por empresas y hogares. Se detectan mayores limitaciones en la disponibilidad que en la calidad de los datos estudiados. Ello se agrava en tres temas: la relación de la empresa con el ambiente, la de hogar-ambiente y la de residuos sólidos, aunque se observan avances en los dos primeros temas durante el último lustro. Los mayores retos de disponibilidad y calidad se centran en los residuos sólidos. En las causas de estos problemas destaca la falta de buenos registros administrativos y una desvinculación entre la oferta de información estadística y su demanda en los sectores de investigación científica y de toma de decisiones.

Epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation may influence gene expression and phenotypes, including obesity in childhood. The directionality of this relationship is nevertheless unclear, and some evidence suggests that adiposity modifies the epigenome, rather than the other way around. In this pilot study, we utilize data from the Early Life Exposures in Mexico to Environmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) study to examine whether measures of adiposity in childhood and early adolescence are associated with repeated measures of blood leukocyte DNA methylation at LINE-1 repetitive elements and two genes implicated in growth and adiposity: H19 and HSD11B2. Longitudinal epigenetic data were generated from cord blood and blood from follow-up visits in early and late adolescence. We assessed interactions between age and measures of body mass index (BMI) at 5 years of age and weight, BMI and waist circumference in early adolescence to infer whether adiposity deflects age-related DNA methylation changes throughout childhood. OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to fluoride has been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, the neuropsychological profile of fluoride’s developmental neurotoxicity at low levels and the stability of this relationship across childhood has not been characterized. We investigated the longitudinal and domain specific effect of prenatal fluoride exposure on IQ among children ages 4, 5, and 6–12 years in the Early Life Exposures in Mexico to Environmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) cohort. METHODS: We measured the average of maternal urinary fluoride at each trimester of pregnancy adjusted for creatinine (MUF(CRE)). Children were administered the McCarthy Scales of Children’s Abilities at ages 4 (N = 386) and 5 (N = 308), and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence at age 6–12 (N = 278). We used generalized estimating equation (GEE) models to estimate the population averaged effect of MUF(CRE) concentration on longitudinal General Cognitive Index (GCI)/Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ), Verbal IQ (VIQ), and Performance IQ (PIQ) scores (N = 348). We tested for possible interactions between MUF(CRE) and child sex as well as for MUF(CRE) and time point on children’s IQ. All models controlled for relevant available covariates. RESULTS: The mean/median MUF(CRE) concentration was 0.90/0.83 mg/L (SD = 0.39; IQR, 0.64–1.11 mg/L). A 0.5 mg/L increase in MUF(CRE) predicted an average 2.12-point decrease in GCI/FSIQ (95% CI: −3.49, −0.75) and 2.63-point decrease in PIQ (95% CI: −3.87, −1.40). MUF(CRE) was marginally associated with VIQ across time (B = −1.29, 95% CI: −2.60, 0.01). No interactions between MUF(CRE) and child sex or MUF(CRE) and time were observed. CONCLUSION: The negative association between prenatal fluoride exposure and longitudinal IQ was driven by decrements in non-verbal intelligence (i.e. PIQ), suggesting that visual-spatial and perceptual reasoning abilities may be more impacted by prenatal fluoride exposure as compared to verbal abilities.

Lead is a toxic chemical of public health concern, however limited biomarkers are able to reconstruct prior lead exposures in early-life when biospecimens are not collected and stored. Although child tooth dentine measurements accurately assess past child perinatal lead exposure, it has not been established if they reflect maternal exposure in pregnancy.To assess the prenatal relationship between child tooth dentine and maternal blood lead measurements and to estimate maternal lead exposure during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy from weekly child dentine profiles.We measured early-life lead exposure in child tooth dentine and maternal blood from 419 child-mother dyads enrolled in the Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment and Social Stress (PROGRESS) cohort. We employed the Super-Learner algorithm to determine the relationship of dentine lead data with maternal blood lead concentrations and to predict maternal lead from child dentine lead data in blinded analyses. We validated and quantified the bias of our results internally.Mothers had moderate blood lead levels (trimesters: 2nd = 29.45 ug/L, 3rd = 31.78 ug/L). Trimester-averaged and weekly child dentine lead measurements were highly correlated with maternal blood levels in the corresponding trimesters. The predicted trimester-specific maternal lead levels were significantly correlated with actual measured blood values (trimesters: 2nd = 0.83; 3rd = 0.88). Biomarkers of maternal lead exposure discriminated women highly exposed to lead (mean) with 85 % and 96 % specificity in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, respectively, with 80 % sensitivity.Weekly child dentine lead levels can serve as biomarkers of past child and maternal lead exposures during pregnancy.

The present research aims to analyze the impact on depressed mood of the confinement decreed by the COVID-19 pandemic, based on empathic capacities and personal strength in Spain. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational research with quantitative methodology. 2112 people over 18 years of age participated. For the analysis of depressed mood, the CES-D questionnaire was administered and to empathic capacities and personal strength the resilience scale for the study of resilient protective factors. The results of the ANOVA statistic and the linear regression carried out indicate the high degree of association and predictive capacity of the dimensions, empathic capacities and personal strength, with respect to the depressed. In conclusion the depressive mood in the Spanish population during confinement caused by COVID-19 is determined by empathic capacities and personal strength. La presente investigación tiene como objetivo analizar el impacto de las capacidades empáticas y la fortaleza personal en el ánimo depresivo en España, durante el confinamiento decretado por la pandemia de la COVID-19. Se trata de una investigación transversal, descriptiva y correlacional con metodología de carácter cuantitativo. Participaron 2112 personas mayores de 18 años. Para el análisis del estado de ánimo depresivo se administró el cuestionario CES-D y para las capacidades empáticas y la fortaleza personal la escala de resiliencia para el estudio de factores protectores resilientes. Los resultados del estadístico ANOVA y la regresión lineal efectuada indican el alto grado de asociación y capacidad predictora de las dimensiones capacidades empáticas y fortaleza personal respecto al estado de ánimo depresivo. En conclusión, El estado de ánimo depresivo en población española durante el confinamiento provocado por la COVID-19 se encuentra determinado por las capacidades empáticas y la fortaleza personal.

Biomarkers of mineral bone disorders (MBD) including phosphorus, fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23 and Klotho are strongly altered in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) who have high cardiac outcomes and mortality rates. However, the crosslink between MBD and cardiac damage after an AKI episode still remains unclear. We tested MBD and cardiac biomarkers in an experimental AKI model after 24 or 72 hours of folic acid injection and we analyzed structural cardiac remodeling, intracellular calcium (Ca2+) dynamics in cardiomyocytes and cardiac rhythm. AKI mice presented high levels of FGF-23, phosphorus and cardiac troponin T and exhibited a cardiac hypertrophy phenotype accompanied by an increase in systolic Ca2+ release 24 hours after AKI. Ca2+ transients and contractile dysfunction were reduced 72 hours after AKI while diastolic sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ leak, pro-arrhythmogenic Ca2+ events and ventricular arrhythmias were increased. These cardiac events were linked to the activation of the calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II pathway through the increased phosphorylation of ryanodine receptors and phospholamban specific sites after AKI. Cardiac hypertrophy and the altered intracellular Ca2+ dynamics were prevented in transgenic mice overexpressing Klotho after AKI induction. In a translational retrospective longitudinal clinical study, we determined that combining FGF-23 and phosphorus with cardiac troponin T levels achieved a better prediction of mortality in AKI patients at hospital admission. Thus, monitoring MBD and cardiac damage biomarkers could be crucial to prevent mortality in AKI patients. In this setting, Klotho might be considered as a new cardioprotective therapeutic tool to prevent deleterious cardiac events in AKI conditions. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular major events and mortality. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the complex cardiorenal network interaction remain unresolved. It is known that the presence of AKI and its evolution are significantly associated with an alteration in the anti-aging factor klotho expression. However, it is unknown whether a klotho deficiency might aggravate cardiac damage after AKI. We examined intracellular calcium (Ca2+) handling in native ventricular isolated cardiomyocytes from wild-type (+/+) and heterozygous hypomorphic mice for the klotho gene (+/kl) in which an overdose of folic acid was administered to induce AKI. Twenty-four hours after AKI induction, cardiomyocyte contraction was decreased in mice with the partial deletion of klotho expression (heterozygous hypomorphic klotho named +/kl). This was accompanied by alterations in Ca2+ transients during systole and an impairment of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2a) function in +/kl mice after AKI induction. Moreover, Ca2+ spark frequency and the incidence of Ca2+ pro-arrhythmic events were greater in cardiomyocytes from heterozygous hypomorphic klotho compared to wild-type mice after AKI. A decrease in klotho expression plays a role in cardiorenal damage aggravating cardiac Ca2+ mishandling after an AKI, providing the basis for future targeted approaches directed to control klotho expression as novel therapeutic strategies to reduce the cardiac burden that affects AKI patients.

Background: Exposure to lead (Pb) during the early life stages has been associated with the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Longitudinal studies of Pb exposure in critical developmental windows in children are limited.Methods: Our study included 601 mother–child dyads from the PROGRESS (Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment and Social Stressors) birth cohort. Blood lead levels (BLLs) were assessed during the second and third gestational trimesters, in cord blood at delivery, and at ages 1, 2, and 4 years. Bone lead levels in the patella and tibia were assessed at 1 month postpartum and evaluated in separate models. To account for cumulative exposure (prenatal, postnatal, and cumulative), we dichotomized the BLLs at each stage visit and determined the following: “higher” if a BLL was at least once above the median (HPb) and “lower” if all BLLs were below the median (LPb). We analyzed fasting glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (cHDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (cLDL), body mass index, waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage, and systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) at two study visits between 6 and 12 years of age and created cutoff points based on the clinical guidelines for each indicator. Mixed effects models were used to analyze each outcome longitudinally for each BLL score, adjusting for child's sex, size for gestational age, child's age, maternal parity, mother's age, and socioeconomic status.Results: We observed associations for HPb exposure and TC in all stages (OR = 0.53, 95%CI = 0.32–0.86) and postnatally (OR = 0.59, 95%CI = 0.36–0.94) and for prenatal HPb and TGs (OR = 0.65, 95%CI = 0.44–0.95). HPb at all stages was associated with WC (OR = 0.27, 95%CI = 0.08–0.86), BMI (OR = 0.33, 95%CI = 0.11–0.99), SBP (OR = 0.53, 95%CI = 0.32–0.85), and DBP (OR = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.34–0.95). Pb levels in the patella were associated with cHDL (OR = 1.03, 95%CI = 1.00–1.07) and those in the tibia with TGs (OR = 0.95, 95%CI = 0.91–0.99).Conclusion: Early life exposure to Pb may alter early indicators of MetS. A follow-up of these children will allow for more definition on the impact of longer-term exposures.

En el siguiente trabajo se presentan los resultados de la aplicación de la metodología Backward Design (BD, en español Diseño inverso) para el diseño curricular de un programa de posgrados en la Universidad del Magdalena titulado programa de especialización en gestión y legislación ambiental. Durante el proceso se establecieron tres etapas fundamentales: la Identificación de los resultados deseados, la determinación de la evidencia aceptable y el diseño de las experiencias de aprendizaje y la pedagogía a utilizar; donde se interrelacionaron los fundamentos del BD con los requisitos para la creación de programas de posgrado del Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia. En este sentido, se generó un currículo actualizado en su diseño pedagógico, bajo una metodología que propende fortalecer de manera transversal la formación de los estudiantes, a través de la adquisición de competencias que den respuesta a las necesidades del entorno, especialmente en los ámbitos técnicos y jurídicos en materia ambiental.

Background Prenatal phthalates exposures have been related to adiposity in peripuberty in a sex-specific fashion. Untargeted metabolomics analysis to assess circulating metabolites offers the potential to characterize biochemical pathways by which early life exposures influence the development of cardiometabolic risk during childhood and adolescence, prior to becoming evident in clinical markers. Methods Among mother-child dyads from the Early Life Exposure in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) birth cohort, we measured 9 phthalate metabolites and bisphenol A in maternal spot urine samples obtained during each trimester of pregnancy, corrected for urinary specific gravity and natural log-transformed. In 110 boys and 124 girls aged 8–14 years, we used a mass-spectrometry based untargeted metabolomics platform to measure fasting serum metabolites, yielding 572 annotated metabolites. We estimated the associations between trimester-specific urinary toxicants and each serum metabolite, among all children or stratified by sex and adjusting for child age, BMI z-score, and pubertal onset. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) still poses a threat to the swine industry worldwide. Currently, commercial vaccines against PRRSV, which consist of modified live or inactivated virus, reduce symptoms and viremia in immunized pigs, but efficacy against heterologous strains is variable. This has led to the development of subunit vaccines that contain viral antigens that show the highest variability. In this work, a chimeric protein comprising short amino acid sequences from glycoprotein 3 (GP3), glycoprotein 4 (GP4), glycoprotein 5 (GP5), and M (matrix protein) proteins of PRRSV was designed and expressed in Escherichia coli. This protein, designated as PRRSVchim, was purified by immobilized metal affinity chromatography and evaluated. PRRSVchim was identified by immunoglobulin G (IgG) presence in serum samples from PRRSV-positive pigs. Also, the protein probed to be antigenic in immunized mice and piglets and provided some degree of protection against challenge with a PRRSV field isolate. These results show the potential of PRRSVchim protein for both PRRSV diagnostic and immunoprophylaxis.

Introduction/purpose Limited studies have examined the association of physical activity with reproductive hormones, DNA methylation, and pubertal status among adolescents. Methods Among 248 boys and 271 girls, we estimated daily physical activity levels based on 7 d of wrist-worn accelerometer data. We used an isotemporal substitution paradigm and sex-stratified regression models to examine the association of physical activity levels with 1) testosterone, cortisol, progesterone, and androstenedione concentrations; 2) DNA methylation of long interspersed nucleotide (LINE-1) repeats and the genes H19, hydroxysteroid (11-Beta) dehydrogenase 2 (HSD11B2), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARA) from blood leukocytes; and 3) Tanner stages, adjusted for age, BMI, and socioeconomic status. Results In boys, substituting 30 min of moderate physical activity for 30 min of sedentary behavior per day was associated with 29% (-49%, 0%) of lower testosterone and 29% (4%, 61%) of higher progesterone. Substituting 30 min of light physical activity for sedentary behavior was associated with 13% (-22%, -2%) of lower progesterone. Among girls, 30 min of additional sedentary behavior was associated with 8% (-15%, 0%) of lower testosterone and 24% (8%, 42%) of higher progesterone concentrations. Substituting 30 min of moderate physical activity for sedentary behavior was associated with 15% (0%, 31%) of higher cortisol, whereas substituting the same amount of light physical activity for sedentary behavior was associated with 22% (-39%, 0%) of lower progesterone. Substituting 30 min of vigorous physical activity for sedentary behavior per day was associated with almost six times higher levels (5.83, 95% confidence interval = 1.79-9.86) of HSD11B2 methylation in boys. Conclusions Accelerometer-measured daily physical activity was associated with reproductive hormones and HSD11B2 DNA methylation, differed by sex and activity intensity levels.

Background: Previous studies have examined the association between blood lead levels and pubertal timing in adolescent girls; however, the evidence is lacking on the role of lead exposure during sensitive developmental periods on sexual maturation. Objectives: To examine the association of prenatal and early childhood lead exposure with pubertal stages among 264 boys and 283 girls aged 9.8–18.0 years in Mexico City. Methods: We measured maternal bone lead (a proxy for cumulative fetal exposure to lead from maternal bone stores mobilized during pregnancy) at 1 month postpartum. Blood lead was measured annually from 1 to 4 years. Pubertal stage was assessed by a pediatrician. We examined the association between lead and pubertal stages of breast, pubic hair and genitalia using ordinal regression. Age at menarche was evaluated using Cox proportional-hazard models. Results: Multivariate models showed that maternal patella lead and early childhood blood lead were inversely associated with breast growth (patella OR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.51–1.00; blood OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.53–0.93) in girls. Girls with maternal patella lead in the 3rd tertile and child blood lead in the 2nd tertile had a later age at menarche compared with girls in the 1st tertile (patella HR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.41–0.88; blood HR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.46–0.91). Additionally, early childhood blood lead was negatively associated with pubic hair growth (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.51–0.90) in girls. No associations were found in boys. Conclusions: These data suggest that higher prenatal and early childhood exposure to lead may be associated with delayed pubertal development in girls but not boys. Background: Gestational lead (Pb) exposure can adversely affect offspring health through multiple mechanisms, including epigenomic alterations via DNA methylation (5mC) and hydroxymethylation (5hmC), an intermediate in oxidative demethylation. Most current methods do not distinguish between 5mC and 5hmC, limiting insights into their individual roles. Objective: Our study sought to identify the association of trimester-specific (T1, T2, T3) prenatal Pb exposure with 5mC and 5hmC levels at multiple cytosine-phosphate-guanine sites within gene regions previously associated with prenatal Pb (HCN2, NINJ2, RAB5A, TPPP) in whole blood leukocytes of children ages 11–18 years of age. Methods: Participants from the Early Life Exposure in Mexico to Environmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) birth cohorts were selected (n=144) for pyrosequencing analysis following oxidative or standard sodium bisulfite treatment. This workflow directly quantifies total methylation (5mC+5hmC) and 5mC only; 5hmC is estimated by subtraction. Results: Participants were 51% male, and mean maternal blood lead levels (BLL) were 6.43±5.16μg/dL in Trimester 1 (T1), 5.66±5.21μg/dL in Trimester 2 (T2), and 5.86±4.34μg/dL in Trimester 3 (T3). In addition, 5hmC levels were calculated for HCN2 (mean±standard deviation(SD), 2.08±4.18%), NINJ2 (G/C: 2.01±5.95; GG: 0.90±3.97), RAB5A (0.66±0.80%), and TPPP (1.11±6.67%). Furthermore, 5mC levels were measured in HCN2 (81.3±9.63%), NINJ2 (heterozygotes: 38.6±7.39%; GG homozygotes: 67.3±9.83%), RAB5A (1.41±1.21%), and TPPP (92.5±8.03%). Several significant associations between BLLs and 5mC/5hmC were identified: T1 BLLs with 5mC in HCN2 (β=−0.37, p=0.03) and 5hmC in NINJ2 (β=0.49, p=0.003); T2 BLLs with 5mC in HCN2 (β=0.37, p=0.03) and 5hmC in NINJ2 (β=0.27, p=0.008); and T3 BLLs with 5mC in HCN2 (β=0.50, p=0.01) and NINJ2 (β=−0.35, p=0.004) and 5hmC in NINJ2 (β=0.45, p

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The neurobiological processes involved in establishing sleep regulation are vulnerable to environmental exposures as early as seven weeks of gestation. Studies have linked in utero pesticide exposure to childhood sleep-disordered breathing. However, the impact of in utero pesticide exposure on the sleep health of adolescents remains unexplored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 137 mother-adolescent pairs from a Mexico City cohort were analyzed. We used maternal urinary 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA, pyrethroid metabolite) and 3, 5, 6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy, chlorpyrifos metabolite) from trimester three to estimate in utero pesticide exposure. Among adolescents, we obtained repeated measures of objectively assessed sleep duration, midpoint, and fragmentation using wrist-actigraphy devices for 7 consecutive days in 2015 and 2017. Unstratified and sex-stratified associations between maternal urinary 3-PBA and TCPy and adolescent sleep measures were examined using linear mixed models. We also examined the interactive effects of maternal pesticide exposure and offspring sex on sleep outcomes. RESULTS: 3-PBA and TCPy were detected in 44.4% and 93% of urine samples, respectively. In adjusted models, we observed monotonic associations between TCPy with longer sleep duration and later sleep midpoint. Adjusted findings demonstrated that higher exposure to maternal TCPy was associated with longer sleep duration (p, trend = 0.01), and later sleep timing (p = 0.07). Findings from interaction tests between exposure and offspring sex were not statistically significant. Adjusted sex-stratified findings showed that the association between TCPy with duration and midpoint was evident only among female offspring; those in the highest tertile of exposure had a 59 minute (95% CI: 12.2, 104.8) (p, trend = 0.004) longer sleep duration and a 0.6 h (95% CI: −0.01, 1.3) (p, trend = 0.01) later sleep midpoint. We found no significant associations between 3-PBA and sleep outcomes. CONCLUSION: Although findings from interaction tests were not statistically significant, effect estimates demonstrated that associations between maternal pesticide exposure and longer sleep duration and later sleep timing were stronger in female offspring.

Dietary factors are known to influence urinary fluoride (UF) levels in nonpregnant people. Maternal UF is used as a biomarker of fluoride exposure; however, dietary influences on UF during pregnancy are unknown. We compared UF levels and assessed the associations between UF and five select dietary influences in pregnancy vs. one-year postpartum: dietary fluoride (F), calcium intake from diet (Ca-diet), calcium intake from supplements (Ca-sup), dietary acid load (AL), and table salt use (TS) in 421 women exposed to fluoridated salt in the Mexican diet. Spot UF (mg/L) was measured by microdiffusion/fluoride-specific electrode and dilution-corrected with specific gravity (SG). Dietary variables were estimated from a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. Comparisons among UF in pregnancy vs. one-year postpartum were performed with non-parametric tests. Associations between dietary variables and UF were assessed using random effect models (for pregnancy) and linear regression (for one-year postpartum). SG-corrected UF (median, range) during pregnancy (0.77, 0.01-4.73 mg/L) did not significantly differ from one-year postpartum (0.75, 0.15-2.62 mg/L) but did increase every 10 gestational weeks, β = 0.05 (CI: 0.00-0.10). Different dietary influences on UF were identified at each state. Although Ca-diet and AL were not associated with UF in either state, Ca-sup decreased UF only during pregnancy, β = - 0.012 mg/L (CI: - 0.023-0.00). Reporting TS use was associated with 12% increase in UF only at one-year postpartum (p = 0.026). These results suggest different dietary influences on UF in the pregnant state, which need consideration when using UF as a biomarker of fluoride exposure.

Existe la percepción a nivel de la población peruana, de una escaza intervención del Estado peruano en el manejo de los conflictos socioambientales y que ello contribuye a que estos conflictos se tornen en violentos. A partir del presente estudio del caso, de 99 conflictos socioambientales activos, reportados por la Defensoría del Pueblo en julio del 2020, se logra determinar, que, si existe participación de entidades del Estado, en todos los 99 conflictos socioambientales, y que se da, en roles de actores primarios, secundarios y/o terciarios; también, este estudio identifica que el Estado interviene a través de instituciones de alguno o de todos sus niveles (Nacional, Regional y Local), pero se evidencia, dado el alto porcentaje de conflictos que alcanzan el nivel de violencia, que está intervención se caracteriza por ser reactiva, con escasa coordinación entre las diferentes instancias y es ineficiente. Finalmente, en base a los resultados obtenidos en el estudio, se realizan propuestas para una mejor gestión de los conflictos socioambientales de parte de las entidades estatales competentes. Este estudio va a servir de insumo para estudios e investigaciones posteriores, más profundos, que se sumen a la información que se necesita para una mayor comprensión de los conflictos socioambientales y los roles de los diferentes actores y desarrollar estrategias para mejorar la gestión de los mismos.
