Ferroelectric domains and domain walls are unique characteristics of ferroelectric materials. Among them, charged domain walls (CDWs) are a special kind of peculiar microstructure that highly improve conductivity, piezoelectricity, and photovoltaic efficiency. Thus, CDWs are believed to be the key to ferroelectrics' future application in fields of energy, sensing, information storage, and so forth. Studies on CDWs are one of the most attractive directions in conventional inorganic ferroelectric ceramics. However, in newly emerged molecular ferroelectrics, which have advantages such as lightweight, easy preparation, simple film fabrication, mechanical flexibility, and biocompatibility, CDWs are rarely observed due to the lack of free charges. We aimed to establish the characteristics and potential etiological risk factors of eruption disturbances in mandibular second molars (MM2). We retrospectively enrolled patients with eruption disturbances in MM2. A total of 143 MM2 with eruption disturbances from 112 patients (mean age 17.45 ± 6.35) were included in this study. Panoramic radiographs were employed to determine the risk factor, angulation type, impaction depth, tooth development stage, and associated pathology. The novel classification method of MM2 was based on impaction depth and angulation. Of 143 MM2, 137 and 6 were diagnosed with impaction and retention, respectively. Insufficient space was the most frequent risk factor for eruption disturbances. There were no significant differences between retention and impaction regarding sex, age, or side. The most frequent impaction type was Type I. The most frequent angulation of impacted MM2 was mesioangular. Impacted MM2 with shallower depth were more frequently associated with the presence of first molar undercut. Impaction types did not differ according to age, side, development stage, or distance from the MM1 distal surface to the anterior border of the ramus. Dentigerous cysts were associated with earlier MM2 development stages and greater MM2 depth. In conclusion, MM2 impaction types differed according to the risk factor, angulation type, MM1 undercut, and presence of cysts. Early MM2 development stage and greater MM2 depth were risk factors for MM2 eruption disturbances with cysts.

Additive approach provides a simple, yet very effective way of improving the performance of polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) membranes. However, the correlation between physical and chemical properties of a wide range of additives and the final membrane properties is still barely understood. In this work, a variety of additives were systematically used to prepare RO membranes to provide fundamental mechanistic understanding of membrane performance improvement by additives. The membranes were characterized in detail by FTIR, XPS, SEM, AFM, water contact angle, zeta potential, QCM etc. The separation performance of the TFC membrane was measured with 2000 ppm NaCl solution at 1.5 MPa and 25 °C. The results show that by adding DMSO, formamide, acetamide into the aqueous solution, or cyclohexanone into the organic phase, approximately 2 times higher water flux was achieved without significantly decreasing salt rejection. Both aqueous and organic phase additives bring out better MPD diffusion and higher crosslinking density. However, their effect on the kinetic of interfacial polymerization are different. The aqueous phase additives promotes the formation of a thinner and smoother PA selective layer with less film mass, while the organic phase additives sustain the solubility of PA oligomers so that the film mass increases and greater film mass correlates with improved membrane flux.

The hybrid rare-earth double perovskite (HREDP) system provides great convenience for the construction of multifunctional materials. However, suffering from the high symmetry of their intrinsic structure, HREDPs face the challenges in the realization and optimization of ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. For the first time, after a systematic investigation of the chirality transformation principle, it is found that the introduction of chirality is an efficient strategy for the targeted construction of multifunctionality, which simultaneously increases the possibility of obtaining multiaxial ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, and effectively realizes a large piezoelectric response. Photolysis-based prodrug strategy can address some critical drug delivery issues, which otherwise are very challenging to tackle with traditional prodrug strategy. However, the need for external light irradiation significantly hampers its in vivo application due to the poor light accessibility of deep tissue. Herein, we propose a new strategy of chemiexcitation-triggered prodrug activation, wherein a photoresponsive prodrug is excited for drug payload release by chemiexcitation instead of photoirradiation. As such, the bond-cleavage power of photolysis can be employed to address some critical drug delivery issues while obviating the need for external light irradiation. We have established the proof of concept by the successful development of a chemiexcitation responsive carbon monoxide delivery platform, which exhibited specific CO release at the tumor site and pronounced tumor suppression effects. We anticipate that such a concept of chemiexcitation-triggered prodrug activation can be leveraged for the targeted delivery of other small molecule-based drug payloads.

Special Chinese propolis sourced from the Changbai Mountains (CBMP) in Northeast China is rich in specific flavonoids and phenolic acids and its bioactivity has not been reported. This study aimed to investigate the antiproliferative effect of CBMP on cancer cells and its molecular mechanisms. Different cancer cell lines were treated with the ethanol extracts of CBMP for 24 hours before the cell viability and mechanism measurements. The results showed CBMP had weak activities against human pancreatic cancer cell PANC1, human lung cancer cell A549, human colon cancer cell HCT116, human liver cancer cell HepG2, human bladder cancer cell T24, and human breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231, but it significantly inhibited the growth of human gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells, caused cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in S phase, with increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). The results indicate that Chinese propolis sourced from the Changbai Mountains selectively inhibits the proliferation of human gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells by inducing both death receptor-induced apoptosis and mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest in S phase. These activities and mechanisms help understand the anticancer action of propolis and its active compounds.

Epulis is a benign tumor, rarely involves aggressive alveolar bone resorption. This study reported a rare case of rapid growth of pregnancy epulis with extensive alveolar bone destruction and the management of this case. A 24-year old pregnant woman at 35 weeks and 1 day of gestation presented a large asymptomatic nodular mass with severe teeth loosening at the anterior mandibular region for 4 weeks. Radiographic examination showed extensive alveolar bone resorption around the affected teeth to the apical area. After delivery, the patient received an extended resection under general anesthesia. The final histopathological analysis revealed the diagnosis of epulis. In conclusion, the rapid growth of epulis during pregnancy mimicking malignant neoplasm with aggressive alveolar bone destruction was rare and puzzling. In such cases, the histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations are the only effective method to reach the correct diagnosis and clinician should proceed with high precaution.

Molecular ferroelectrics are attracting tremendous interest because of their easy and environmental-friendly processing, low acoustic impedance, and mechanical flexibility. Their ferroelectric mechanism is mainly ascribed to the order-disorder transition of molecules such as spherical 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2] octane (DABCO) and quinuclidine. Here, we present two molecular ferroelectrics, [HDABCO][TFSA] and its deuterated one [DDABCO][TFSA] (TFSA = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)ammonium), whose ferroelectricity is triggered by the proton ordering. This is the first time that the protons show a thermally fluctuated bistability with a double-well potential in DABCO-based ferroelectrics. A large deuterium isotope effect (ΔT = ∼53 K) not only proves that they are hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics but also extends the ferroelectric working temperature range to room temperature. The superfast polarization switching of 100 kHz and ultralow coercive voltage of 1 V (far less than 5 V required for commercially available ferroelectric devices), benefiting from the low energy for proton transfer, allow [DDABCO][TFSA] a great potential for memory devices with low-voltage, high-speed operation. This work should inspire further exploration of hydrogen-bonded molecular ferroelectrics for flexible and wearable devices with the low-power information storage.

Sinomenine (SN) has been used in the clinical treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis for many years. Studies showed that SN held protective effects such as anti-inflammation, scavenging free radicals and suppressing immune response in many autoimmune diseases. The purpose of the present study is to explore the mechanism of anti-inflammation of SN on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophages activation and investigate whether the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway participated in. Macrophages isolated from mouse peritoneal cavity were stimulated by 1 µg/mL LPS for 24 h. And then the cells were treated with various concentrations of SN, TLR4 inhibitor respectively for additional 48 h. Drug toxicity was detected by MTT assay and Transwell experiment was used to assess chemotaxis. Furthermore, TLR4 and MyD88 mRNA levels were detected by real-time PCR. Western blotting was used to examine TLR4, MyD88 and phosphorylated IκB protein expression in macrophages. Immunofluorescence assay was applied to observe p65 NF-κB protein expression in macrophage nucleus. We extracted macrophages with high purity and activity from the abdominal cavity of mice. SN remarkably inhibited the chemotaxis and secretion function of LPS-stimulated macrophages. It also down-regulated both the protein levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) and the RNA and protein levels of the key factors (TLR4, MyD88, P-IκB) in TLR4 pathway. The expression of p65 NF-κB protein in nuclei was down-regulated, which was correlated with a similar decrease in P-IκB protein level. In conclusion, SN can inhibit the LPS induced immune responses in macrophages by blocking the activated TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. These results may provide a therapeutic approach to regulate inflammatory responses.

Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted considerable interests because of their easy and environmentally friendly processing, low acoustical impedance and mechanical flexibility. Herein, a molecular thermochromic ferroelectric, N,N'-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium tetrachlorocuprate(II) ([DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 ) is reported, which shows both excellent ferroelectricity and intriguing thermochromism. [DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition from Pca21 to Pbcm at a significantly high Curie temperature of 413 K, accompanied by a color change from yellow to red that is due to the remarkable deformation of [CuCl4 ]2- tetrahedron, where the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases correspond to yellow and red, respectively. Combined with multiple bistable physical properties, [DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 would be a promising candidate for next-generation smart devices, and should inspire further exploration of multifunctional molecular ferroelectrics.
