We suggest a new technique for developing noisy tree data structures. We call it a "walking tree". As applications of the technique we present a noisy Self-Balanced Binary Search Tree (we use a Red–Black tree as an implementation) and a noisy segment tree. The asymptotic complexity of the main operations for the tree data structures does not change compared to the case without noise. We apply the data structures in quantum algorithms for several problems on strings like the string-sorting problem and auto-complete problem. For both problems, we obtain quantum speed-up. Moreover, for the string-sorting problem, we show a quantum lower bound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: An effective way to solve the issue of global warming is reduction of CO2 emissions through its capture from stationary sources of energy production. A large amount can be stored in depleted oil and gas reservoirs being mixed with impurities and hydrocarbons in states close to the critical point. Thermodiffusion may result in accumulation of chemically active impurities near the bottom of the cap rock, thus leading to provoke leakages. The objective of the KIBILI project aims to study the kinetic of the mass transport in a binary mixture in the gas/liquid critical region. The measurements of diffusion and Soret coefficients are foreseen to be carried out in a CO2–hydrocarbon system, which could be representative of those mixtures stored in depleted oil and gas reservoirs. The microgravity conditions provided by nano-satellites of the project QB50 would be a very nice opportunity to realize accurate measurements of these delicate phenomena. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The IVIDIL (Influence of VIbrations on DIffusion in Liquids) experiment was aimed at utilizing the International Space Station for investigating the effects of vibrations on liquid diffusion and thermodiffusion. The SODI-IVIDIL project of ESA is gathering together European, Canadian and Russian researchers with complementary skills to prepare and carry out the experiment, to process the raw data and perform numerical modeling of the phenomena. The experiment IVIDIL started on the October 5, 2009. In total 55 experimental runs were successfully completed by 20 January, 2010. A general description of the ISS facility related to the diffusion experiments and accessible for European researchers is briefly presented and some details about IVIDIL instrument are given. The scientific interest of this short article is focused on one of the objectives of the experiment: performing precise measurements of diffusion and thermodiffusion coefficients for binary mixtures in the absence of gravity. We demonstrate possibility of the experimental environment and report on the first results related to measurements of mass transport coefficients in the mixture with the negative Soret effect: 10% isopropanol (IPA)–90% water. Herbarium collections shape our understanding of Earth's flora and are crucial for addressing global change issues. Their formation, however, is not free from sociopolitical issues of immediate relevance. Despite increasing efforts addressing issues of representation and colonialism in natural history collections, herbaria have received comparatively less attention. While it has been noted that the majority of plant specimens are housed in the Global North, the extent and magnitude of this disparity have not been quantified. Here we examine the colonial legacy of botanical collections, analysing 85,621,930 specimen records and assessing survey responses from 92 herbarium collections across 39 countries. We find an inverse relationship between where plant diversity exists in nature and where it is housed in herbaria. Such disparities persist across physical and digital realms despite overt colonialism ending over half a century ago. Background: Data on the species diversity and distribution of pteridophytes (lycophytes and ferns) in the Urals and adjacent areas are presented. The dataset includes 13,742 observations of two classes Lycopodiopsida and Polypodiopsida. In total, the dataset contains information on 16 families, 28 generas, 65 species, four subspecies and nine interspecies hybrids. All records are for lycophytes and ferns collected over 170 years between 1853 and 2021. The dataset presented is based on herbarium specimens, published data and field research conducted by the authors. This dataset is the first and important step towards generalising information on the current diversity and geographical distribution of pteridophytes in the Urals and adjacent areas., New Information: The dataset contains 13,742 records of 65 species of pteridophytes occurrences in the Urals and adjacent territories: Udmurt Republic (42,100 km 2 ); Perm Krai (160,600 km 2 ); Sverdlovsk Oblast (194,800 km 2 ); Chelyabinsk Oblast (87,900 km 2 ); Republic of Bashkortostan (143,600 km 2 ); Tyumen Oblast (160,100 km 2 ); Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (769,300 km 2 ); Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (534,800km 2 ) and Kurgan Oblast (71,500 km 2 ). Each record includes a geographical description of the place of discovery and habitat, year of discovery, author of the finding and determination, as well as a link to a literary source (if the data were published) or the place of storage of the herbarium specimen. We present experimental results obtained under normal gravity on the dynamics of solid particles in periodic oscillatory thermocapillary-driven flows in a non-isothermal liquid bridge made of decane. Inertial particles of different densities and in the size range approximately 0.75-75 μm are able to form stable coherent structures (particle accumulation structures, or PASs). Two image processing techniques were developed and successfully applied to compute time required for an ensemble of particles to form a structure. It is shown that the formation time grows with the decrease of the Stokes number. The observations indicate the probable irrelevance of the memory term for these experiments. Two types of PAS were observed-single (SL-I) and double-loop (SL-II)-which sometimes co-existed. Only large or very dense particles may form an SL-II type structure. A number of novel features of the system were perceived. In some cases, intermittently stable structures emerged (their dynamics is characterized by alternating time intervals during which a structure exists and is destroyed). Whereas in most experiments we observed a conventional symmetric and centered PAS, there were cases when a long-term stable asymmetric structure appeared. Experiments wherein two different types of PAS-forming particles were used simultaneously revealed the destructive role of collisions between the particles on formation of structures.
