Abstract

The synthesis of heavy elements in the Universe presents several challenges. From one side the astrophysical site is still undetermined and on other hand the input from nuclear physics requires the knowledge of properties of exotic nuclei, some of them perhaps accessible in ion beam facilities. Black hole accretion disks have been proposed as possible r-process sites. Analogously to Supernovae these objects emit huge amounts of neutrinos. We discuss the neutrino emission from black hole accretion disks. In particular we show the influence that the black hole strong gravitational field has on changing the electron fraction relevant to the synthesis of elements.

123. Educational Television On Demand. An Evaluation of the Ottawa IRTV Experiment.

Abstract

The Information Retrieval Television (IRTV) system was a unique experimental media program initiated in several Ottawa schools in the fall of 1968. The program was designed to allow teachers to select televised audiovisual programs for their classes when and where they choose. This arrangement freed teachers from broadcast schedules and the rigidities of existing film distribution methods. The IRTV system was tested for nearly three years, and this report discusses a variety of aspects of the system. The report is based primarily upon questionnaire surveys and media center logs. It does not attempt to validate IRTV's effect on learning, but rather it evaluates the mechanics of the system itself. The data collected revealed that the IRTV system was unlikely to do much more than double the average student's exposure to films and television. Furthermore, IRTV was predominantly used for enrichment. The most important advantage of the system was that it could insure the viewer the program in a very short time. (MC)

Two recent projects using retrieval television, which permits teachers to request program transmissions for individual classrooms, are compared. Many dimensions of student and teacher reaction to retrieval television are reported for the Ottawa Project. These results and the expense and/or channel restrictions of retrieval television lead to the conclusion that it will not at present be used by individual students in the classroom. (Author)

Abstract

Magnetorheological (MR) fluid has a yield stress that is readily controllable using an applied magnetic field. MR dampers adjust this yield stress in a magnetic valve to accommodate a wide range of shock or vibration loads. In this study, the performance of an MR damper with a spiral channel bypass valve is examined. Three bypass damper configurations, i.e., a spiral channel, a spiral channel with beads, and a straight channel with beads, are subject to sinusoidal forcing at constant amplitude, while varying frequency, and applied field (current). These configurations are characterized using tortuosity and porosity parameters. The spiral channel without beads had the largest porosity and smallest tortuosity, which produced the smallest damper force, but the widest controllable damping range. The spiral channel with beads had the smallest porosity, and a comparable tortuosity, which produced the largest damping force, but similar controllable damping range to the straight channel with beads. Abstract

Accretion disks arising from neutron star- neutron star mergers or black hole- neutron star mergers produce large numbers of neutrinos and antineutrinos. In contrast to other astrophysical scenarios, like supernovae, in mergers the antineutrinos outnumber the neutrinos. This antineutrino dominance gives neutrinos from merger disks the opportunity to exhibit new oscillation physics, specifically a matter-neutrino resonance. We explore this resonance, finding that consequences can be a large transition of $\nu_e$ to other flavors, while the $\bar{\nu}_e$s return to their initial state. We present numerical calculations of neutrinos from merger disks and compare with a single energy model. We explain both the basic features and the conditions for a transition.
