104. World History in Liberal Military Education.

Abstract

The educational environment of the U.S. Air Force Academy is discussed and the Academy's basic world history program is described. The first part of the report focuses on the Academy's educational environment, discussing the core curriculum, history instruction, the cadet, and the history faculty. The report's second part, which comprises over half the publication, deals with the Academy's world history program. The evolution of the program is discussed and the objectives of world history instruction are examined. The structure of the undergraduate survey course in world history entitled "Europe and the World since 1500" is described. The course provides a thematic treatment of the interaction between the major regions of the world since the end of the 15th century, with the rise of Western European civilization and the impact of that civilization on other regions as focus. The world history honors program is described. Areas of concern related to teaching and to the knowledge, skills, and values that the undergraduate course provides are examined. The publication concludes with a discussion of the future of world history and with a commentary concerning the place of world history in a military education. Appended are a course calendar and brief biographical sketches of the report's 12 contributors. (RM)

105. Marketing Student Services in a Community College.

Abstract

This paper applies business marketing principles to college student services, introduces a model for measuring the life cycle of a service, outlines strategic planning procedures, and describes the implementation of a comprehensive student service marketing program at Seminole Community College in Florida. An overview of marketing defines marketing and challenges student service professionals to understand the principles of marketing and to apply them to student services without compromising the integrity of their mission. Five components of an effective marketing plan for student services are discussed: (1) analyzing the life cycle of each service; (2) developing procedures to eliminate "terminal" services which cannot be saved; (3) identifying consumer needs and reactions; (4) planning strategically; and (5) educating effectively. Attachments comprising the bulk of the document include forms to track student services on a life-cycle continuum, guidelines on the student development office review from Seminole Community College, a new student survey, a faculty evaluation of services survey, an advising evaluation form for students, an overview of strategic planning at Seminole Community College's Student Services Unit, and an outline of the marketing/strategic planning model currently used at the college. 106. Women and the Dichotomy of Literacy: Public/Private Discourse.

Abstract

By viewing women's literacy within the context of America from the Colonial period until the present, it is clear that men have traditionally shaped and controlled who shall be literate and what shall be viewed as literate, both within and outside the educational system. Women's writing from the Colonial period is virtually non-existent, and studies indicate that women's literacy at this time was low. After mandatory public schooling for both males and females began, the gap between the functional literacy skills of the sexes narrowed considerably between 1780 and 1850. Yet even with the advent of women's education, men reserved serious education for themselves. Although women began to occupy a place of status within the public domain by publishing in most fields after the mid-19th century, women's studies courses still have only marginal status because of the male-controlled educational system. Few women are found in the more powerful positions of public education. Males command a public discourse community of epic proportions, while women have traditionally been restricted to the private sphere. This public/private dichotomy should be replaced with pluralism, which breaks down the male power structure and promotes cooperation rather than control. In the classroom, the emphasis on argumentative discourse and correct usage should be eliminated, and thought given to developing instead a community of cooperation and an awareness of many equally effective ways of communicating through writing. 114. The MBTI as a Predictor of Wellness Issues: Theirs and Ours.

Abstract

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assists clients to develop an understanding of their four functions (sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling), and their four attitudes (extraversion, introversion, judgment, and perception). It also provides information about each client's dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior functions, and the time frame within which each will develop. For the past 5 years, counselors at Seminole Community College have attempted to determine if there is a relationship between client type and the following three variables: (1) presenting problems; (2) interventions the client requested; and (3) interventions the client needed. Data were collected from students in a variety of academic and counseling groups. Each type appeared to have some unique wellness issues, distinct preferences for the issues they wanted, and clear-cut counseling needs. Many clients, particularly those at mid-life, felt uncomfortable because they were doing things out of character. This appeared to be related to type, not to the dominant or the auxiliary functions, but to the inferior function. Counselors are in the process of developing ways to assist clients to recognize and develop the inferior function. In general, two rules seem to apply when dealing with the inferior: do not confront it, and help clients develop it during leisure hours rather than during critical work or home time. The major wellness issues, 16 types and suggested interventions, as well as inferior function and characteristics are listed. (LLL)

116. Use of a door handle disinfection system to reduce the risks associated with microbial loads on fomites in a healthcare setting.

Abstract

Background: Pathogenic organisms, including those that are multidrug resistant, can survive for extended periods of time on surfaces. Numerous studies show that contaminated hand-touch sites, such as door handles, pose a serious risk for onward transfer to patients.Aim: To compare microbial levels on the handles of ten frequently used door locations, with and without a door handle disinfection system in place, in a busy rehabilitation unit consisting of two wards at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dublin.Methods: A door handle disinfection system (Handle Hygiene®), utilizing an atomizing pump (non-aerosol), automatically delivered a pulse of disinfectant to a door handle each time the door was used. Microbial levels on the handles of frequently used door locations were monitored over a 16-week period, to compare microbial loads with and without a door handle disinfection system in place. Samples of two disinfectant types, Steri-7 (broad-spectrum disinfectant) and Dew (hypochlorous acid), were used in the study.Findings: Levels of ≤2.5 cfu/cm2 were recorded on 93% of samples collected where a door handle disinfection system was in use, with 66% of samples showing no microbes recovered. Where a level of >2.5 cfu/cm2 was recorded, the door handle disinfection system reduced this to a negligible level by the time the next sample was taken, compared with several days where no system was in place.Conclusion: Door handle disinfection systems offer an effective solution to reducing microbial levels on frequently touched door handles, as an automated solution with minimal additional costs. 120. Do 'Clicker' Educational Sessions Enhance the Effectiveness of a Social Norms Marketing Campaign?

Abstract

Objective: Social norms campaigns are a cost-effective way to reduce high-risk drinking on college campuses. This study compares effectiveness of a "standard" social norms media (SNM) campaign for those with and without exposure to additional educational sessions using audience response technology ("clickers"). Methods: American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment questions are used to evaluate actual and perceived use. Additional survey questions assess individual exposure to the interventions. Results: The authors find "clicker" technology to be more effective than social norms poster media alone in reducing misperceptions of normative alcohol use for those students who attended clicker sessions. Conclusion: Poster SNM campaigns may be most effective when supported by group "clicker" heath-related sessions.

•The addition of daratumumab to RVd induction therapy may impact stem cell mobilization prior to transplantation for multiple myeloma.•For patients who receive both G-CSF and plerixafor, an adequate number of hematopoietic stem cells can be collected in 1 day despite the use of a daratumumab- based induction regimen.•Use of upfront G-CSF and plerixafor is a cost-effective strategy for stem cell mobilization in patients receiving a daratumumab-based induction regimen.

Abstract

A San Francisco Estuary core was analysed at high resolution to assess its component stratigraphic signatures of the Anthropocene in the form of non-native species, Hg, spheroidal carbonaceous particles, δ13Corg, δ15N, radiogenic materials, and heavy metals. Time series analysis of the core using Ti data provides a chronology to depth 167 cm into the 1960s. Below this, to depth 230 cm, the lowermost part of the core may extend to the 1950s or potentially a little earlier. The earliest anthropogenic marker recorded in the core is the excursion in Hg (beginning at 190 cm) which may denote the early 1960s and is the closest stratigraphic marker in the core to the proposed mid-20th century timing for the onset of the Anthropocene. Biostratigraphical signatures of non-native species arriving in the 1970s–1980s are widespread key markers and are significant tools for the correlation of Anthropocene deposits across the estuary. The absence of signals that indicate pre-1950s deposits precludes the use of the core to mark the Holocene–Anthropocene boundary. However, the core provides an important reference section to demonstrate the palaeontological distinctiveness of Anthropocene series deposits.

144. Efficacy of tixagevimab-cilgavimab in preventing SARS-CoV-2 for patients with B-cell malignancies

Abstract

COVID-19 still represents a major issue for patients with lymphoid malignancies, especially those on therapy, because of immune suppression and suboptimal responses to vaccination. Davis et al report on their experience with double dose tixagevimab-cilgavimab preexposure prophylaxis in a cohort of 251 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, B-cell lymphomas, multiple myeloma, or B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 63% of whom had received 3 doses of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Breakthrough infections within 3 months occur despite passive immunization, affecting 11% in this series; however, hospitalization rates are low, and mortality was avoided, suggesting benefit from this strategy.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between level of supervision (LOS) ratings for the Common Pediatric Subspecialty Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) with their associated subcompetency milestones across subspecialties and by fellowship training year. Methods: Clinical Competency Committees (CCCs) in 14 pediatric subspecialties submitted LOS ratings for 6 Common Subspecialty EPAs and subcompetency milestone levels mapped to these EPAs. We examined associations between these subcompetency milestone levels and LOS ratings across subspecialty training year by fitting per-EPA linear mixed effects models, regressing LOS rating on milestone level and on training year. Results: CCCs from 211 pediatric fellowship programs provided data for 369 first, 336 second, and 331 third year fellows. Mean subcompetency milestone levels increased similarly among subspecialties for most EPAs compared with the reference, Adolescent Medicine. Mean subcompetency milestones mapped to each EPA and mean EPA LOS ratings generally increased by training year across all subspecialties. conclusions: Subcompetency milestones levels mapped to each Common Subspecialty EPA and the EPA LOS ratings increase similarly across subspecialties and by training year, providing validity evidence for using EPA LOS to assess pediatric subspecialty trainee performance.
