Past research has suggested that sexual and gender minorities experience elevated levels of systemic inflammation which in turn has been linked to worse mental health outcomes. Therefore, the goals of this work are to develop a better understanding of the relationship between mental health variables and inflammation among this high-risk population. Data were collected among a sample of young men who have sex with men and transgender women (YMSM/TGW, N = 685) aged 16–20 at the time of enrollment. Multiplex plasma cytokine and inflammatory biomarkers were quantified. Mental health variables were self-reported and included perceived stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. Latent profile analyses (i.e., latent class analyses intended for continuous variables) were utilized to identify four unique profiles of individuals with similar inflammatory markers followed by adjusted multinomial logistic regression to estimate the association between inflammatory profiles and mental health variables. Participants experienced moderate levels of perceived stress, normal levels of depression and ten percent reported suicidal ideation in the past 6 months. Multinomial regression models indicated that being in the highest inflammation profile, compared to the lowest inflammation profile, was significantly associated only with increased perceived stress and suicidal ideation. In sum, we observed significant relationships between inflammation and both perceived stress and suicidal ideation, but not between inflammation and depression. Future research should continue to assess these relationships using longitudinal data as they are intricate and likely bidirectional and may be key to reducing health disparities among this population. Researchers have hypothesized that the degree to which an individual's actual behavior approximates the culturally valued lifestyle encoded in the dominant cultural model has consequences for physical and mental health. We contribute to this line of research by analyzing data from a longitudinal study composed of five annual surveys (2002-2006 inclusive) from 791 adults in one society of foragers--farmers in the Bolivian Amazon, the Tsimane'. We estimate the association between a standard measure of individual achievement of the cultural model, cultural consonance, and three indicators of body morphology. Drawing on research suggesting that in societies in the early stages of economic development an increase in socioeconomic status is associated with an increase in mean body mass, we expect to find a positive association between cultural consonance and three anthropometric measures. We found the expected positive association between cultural consonance and anthropometric measures--especially for men--only when using ordinary least square (OLS) regression models, but not when using fixed-effects regression models. The real magnitude of the association was low. The comparison of estimates from OLS and fixed-effect regression models suggests that previous findings on the effects of cultural consonance on body morphology using cross-sectional data should be read with caution because the association might be largely explained by fixed characteristics of individuals not accounted in OLS models. Seven indicators of well-being among native Amazonians of Bolivia show that the value of food consumption, body mass index, and incidence of anger show improvements over time but self-reported number of recent ailments are significantly deteriorating. These indicators are examined in light of the forces that threaten the well-being of Amazonians that include globalization and urbanization.

Infectious disease is an important, but often overlooked, component of population health in high-income nations. Common, everyday infections exact significant costs, including school and work absenteeism, reduced productivity, and substantial health care expenditures. Infectious disease also shapes trajectories of biological risk and health and may be causally linked to chronic disease risk later in life. The size, diversity, and representativeness of samples typically employed in survey-based studies of health present exceptional opportunities for advancing scientific knowledge on the social and economic determinants of infectious disease in childhood and adulthood and to investigate the long-term consequences of infectious disease for well-being and attainment across multiple domains. A wide range of interview-based, anthropometric, and biomarker measurement options are currently available for assessing infectious exposures, inflammation, and immune function in nonclinical settings. These methods afford opportunities for innovative, transdisciplinary research on the causes and consequences of infectious disease across the life course that can address questions of interest to social, life, and biomedical scientists. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of economic and cultural change on immune function and psychosocial stress in an indigenous Siberian population. We examined Epstein-Barr virus antibodies (EBV), an indirect biomarker of cell-mediated immune function, in venous whole blood samples collected from 143 Yakut (Sakha) herders (45 men and 98 women) in six communities using a cross-sectional study design. We modeled economic change through the analysis of lifestyle incongruity (LI), calculated as the disparity between socioeconomic status and material lifestyle, computed with two orthogonal scales: market and subsistence lifestyle. EBV antibody level was significantly negatively associated with both a market and a subsistence lifestyle, indicating higher cell-mediated immune function associated with higher material lifestyle scores. In contrast, LI was significantly positively associated with EBV antibodies indicating lower immune function, and suggesting higher psychosocial stress, among individuals with economic status in excess of material lifestyle. Individuals with lower incongruity scores (i.e., economic status at parity with material resources, or with material resources in excess of economic status) had significantly lower EBV antibodies. The findings suggest significant health impacts of changes in material well-being and shifting status and prestige markers on health during the transition to a market economy in Siberia. The findings also suggest that relative, as opposed to absolute, level of economic status or material wealth is more strongly related to stress in the Siberian context. We are at the beginning of an exciting era of discovery, and this commentary focuses on two questions of particular importance to comparative research. First, how do we use biological measures to define 'health'? Second, how do we define and measure social context, particularly across cultural settings? Answers to these questions, as well as others addressed by scholars working at the intersection of the social and biomedical sciences, will ultimately lead to a better, more multidimensional understanding of human biology and health. A study was conducted to estimate the relationship between traditional plant knowledge and nutritional status as measured by body-mass index (BMI). Findings indicate that doubling an adult's traditional knowledge is associated with an improvement in BMI of 6.3%. Results also show that schooling does not necessarily weaken the accumulation of traditional knowledge.
