Abstract

This study provides a whole-systems simulation on how to halve global CO2 emissions by 2050, compared to 2010, with an emphasis on technologies and costs, in order to avoid a dangerous increase in the global mean surface temperature by end the of this century. There still remains uncertainty as to how much a low-carbon energy system costs compared to a high-carbon system. Integrated assessment models (IAMs) show a large range of costs of mitigation towards the 2°C target, with up to an order of magnitude difference between the highest and lowest cost, depending on a number of factors including model structure, technology availability and costs, and the degree of feedback with the wider macro-economy. A simpler analysis potentially serves to highlight where costs fall and to what degree. Here we show that the additional cost of a low-carbon energy system is less than 1% of global GDP more than a system resulting from low mitigation effort. The proposed approach aligns with some previous IAMs and other projections discussed in the paper, whilst also providing a clearer and more detailed view of the world. Achieving this system by 2050, with CO2 emissions of about 15GtCO2, depends heavily on decarbonisation of the electricity sector to around 100gCO2/kWh, as well as on maximising energy efficiency potential across all sectors. This scenario would require a major mitigation effort in all the assessed world regions. However, in order to keep the global mean surface temperature increase below 1.5°C, it would be necessary to achieve net-zero emission by 2050, requiring a much further mitigation effort.

Abstract

O vírus da doença de Newcastle (VDN) é o agente etiológico de uma das doenças mais importantes da avicultura e tem sido identificado na maioria das espécies aviárias, silvestres e domésticas. Neste trabalho, obteve-se o isolamento em ovos embrionados da amostra denominada JAP99 do VDN, a partir de fezes de patos coletadas no Município de Japeri, RJ. A amostra foi identificada pela técnica da inibição da hemaglutinação (HI) e a caracterização biológica da patogenicidade do novo isolado foi realizada no Laboratório Regional Animal, MAPA, Campinas, SP (LARA-Campinas). Pela inoculação intracerebral em pintos de um dia (IPIC), o índice foi 1,4. Na inoculação intravenosa em aves de seis semanas (IPIV), o índice encontrado foi 0,0 (zero) e o tempo médio de morte embrionária (TMME) foi de 62 horas. Estes resultados indicaram que o isolado JAP99 é mesogênico para galinhas comerciais, oferecendo risco para a avicultura industrial.

Abstract

For measurements with low energy radio active or stable beams it is important to reconstruct trajectories for ions in large solid angle spectrometers. In this paper we describe a large area (106 × 420 mm _) tracking secondary electron detectors, Se-D. In Se-D, the electrons emitted by an aluminized Mylar foil are captured by an electromagnetic field and focused on an electron gaseous detector to give a time and 2-D position resolution (sigma) of typically 130 nsec and 0.8 mm. © 2003 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract Background Orthopoxvirus (OPV) and Parapoxvirus (PPV) have been associated with worldwide exanthematic outbreaks. Some species of these genera are able to infect humans and domestic animals, causing serious economic losses and public health impact. Rapid, useful and highly specific methods are required to detect and epidemiologically monitor such poxviruses. In the present paper, we describe the development of a nested-multiplex PCR method for the simultaneous detection of OPV and PPV species directly from exanthematic lesions, with no previous viral isolation or DNA extraction. Methods and Results The OPV/PPV nested-multiplex PCR was developed based on the evaluation and combination of published primer sets, and was applied to the detection of the target pathogens. The method showed high sensitivity, and the specificity was confirmed by amplicon sequencing. Exanthematic lesion samples collected during bovine vaccinia or contagious ecthyma outbreaks were submitted to OPV/PPV nested-multiplex PCR and confirmed its applicability. Conclusion These results suggest that the presented multiplex PCR provides a highly robust and sensitive method to detect OPV and PPV directly from clinical samples. The method can be used for viral identification and monitoring, especially in areas where OPV and PPV co-circulate.

Abstract

Abstract Background Orf virus (ORFV), the prototype of the genus Parapoxvirus (PPV), is the etiological agent of contagious ecthyma, a severe exanthematic dermatitis that afflicts domestic and wild small ruminants. Although South American ORFV outbreaks have occurred and diagnosed there are no South American PPV major membrane glycoprotein B2L gene nucleotide sequences available. Case presentation an outbreak of ovine contagious ecthyma in Midwest Brazil was investigated. The diagnosis was based on clinical examinations and molecular biology techniques. The molecular characterization of the virus was done using PCR amplification, cloning and DNA sequencing of the B2L gene. The phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a high degree of identity with ORFV strains, and the isolate was closest to the ORFV-India 82/04 isolate. Another Brazilian ORFV isolate, NE1, was sequenced for comparative analysis and also showed a high degree of identity with an Asian ORFV strain. Conclusion Distinct ORFV strains are circulating in Brazil. This is the first report on the phylogenetic analysis of an ORFV in South America.

Abstract

We have deduced the linear momentum transferred from the projectile to the fissioning nucleus in the reaction20Ne+197Au at 30 MeV/A by measuring the folding angle between the two fission fragments. We found that the most probable linear momentum transfer represents 76% of the initial value.
