Abstract

Abstract A direct consequence of the rapid expansion of civilization and modernization trends is the escalation in global warming and the consequential climatic upheavals. The world has actively advocated the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as a response to the environmental challenges posed by vehicular emissions. It is evident that conventional fuel‐based charging infrastructures are economically impractical and lack organizational cohesion in light of the proliferation of EVs. An EV charging station powered by renewable energy presents a promising opportunity for enhancing flexibility and control. It is imperative that EV charging stations be equipped with solar power and standby batteries (SBBs). Consequently, this article presents and evaluates a system that utilizes a proportional‐integral‐derivative controller, a neural network‐equipped grid and a charging station utilizing a Dragon Fly Optimization Algorithm to generate power and a maximum power point tracking controller. To achieve optimal power management within the charging station, MATLAB/Simulink is used to implement and rigorously test the proposed system. It orchestrates the interaction between the solar panel, backup battery, grid and EVs. Compared to existing systems in the literature, the comprehensive system exhibits commendable efficiency. Due to the pivotal role played by grid integration and the SBB, the system can ensure a reliable power supply to the charging station under any weather conditions.

Abstract

Abstract Epigenetic modifications control gene expression and are essential for turning genes on and off to regulate and maintain differentiated cell types. Epigenetics are also modified by a multitude of environmental exposures, including diet and pollutants, allowing an individual’s environment to influence gene expression and resultant phenotypes and clinical outcomes. These epigenetic modifications due to gene–environment interactions can also be transmitted across generations, raising the possibility that environmental influences that occurred in one generation may be transmitted beyond the second generation, exerting a long-lasting effect. In this review, we cover the known mechanisms of epigenetic modification acquisition, reprogramming and persistence, animal models and human studies used to understand multigenerational epigenetic transmission, and examples of environmentally induced epigenetic change and its transmission across generations. We highlight the importance of environmental health not only on the current population but also on future generations that will experience health outcomes transmitted through epigenetic inheritance.

Abstract

Abstract Using proton–proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$140\hbox { fb}^{-1}$$ 140 fb - 1 collected by the CMS experiment at $$\sqrt{s}= 13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ s = 13 Te V , the $${{{\Lambda }} _{\text {b}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\text {J}/\uppsi }} {{{\Xi }} ^{{-}}} {{\text {K}} ^{{+}}} $$ Λ b 0 → J / ψ Ξ - K + decay is observed for the first time, with a statistical significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. The relative branching fraction, with respect to the $${{{\Lambda }} _{\text {b}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{{\uppsi }} ({2\textrm{S}})} {{\Lambda }} $$ Λ b 0 → ψ ( 2 S ) Λ decay, is measured to be $$\mathcal {B}({{{\Lambda }} _{\text {b}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\text {J}/\uppsi }} {{{\Xi }} ^{{-}}} {{\text {K}} ^{{+}}} )/\mathcal {B}({{{\Lambda }} _{\text {b}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{{\uppsi }} ({2\textrm{S}})} {{\Lambda }} ) = [3.38\pm 1.02\pm 0.61\pm 0.03]\%$$ B ( Λ b 0 → J / ψ Ξ - K + ) / B ( Λ b 0 → ψ ( 2 S ) Λ ) = [ 3.38 ± 1.02 ± 0.61 ± 0.03 ] % , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is related to the uncertainties in $$\mathcal {B}({{{\uppsi }} ({2\textrm{S}})} \rightarrow {{\text {J}/\uppsi }} {{{\uppi }} ^{{+}}} {{{\uppi }} ^{{-}}} )$$ B ( ψ ( 2 S ) → J / ψ π + π - ) and $$\mathcal {B}({{{\Xi }} ^{{-}}} \rightarrow {{\Lambda }} {{{\uppi }} ^{{-}}} )$$ B ( Ξ - → Λ π - ) .

Abstract

The DSAIL-GeJuSTA Data Science Education Workshop was a joint initiative by the Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAIL) and Gender Justice in STEM Research in Africa (GeJUSTA). GeJUSTA is a programme funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) that is working towards increasing the representation of women in STEM. The workshop was held on 9 November 2023, during the 7th DeKUT International Conference on Science, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (STI&E) at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT). The conference ran from 8-10 November 2023. The event successfully convened 31 participants. The composition of the attendees was diverse, ranging from data-science educators, industry participants using data science, researchers who use data science and students in a myriad of courses, including engineering and pharmacy. The primary focus of the workshop was to have a discussion with the attendees and share practices around designing data-science curriculum, strategies for achieving gender equity in data-science education, addressing new technological challenges in education and fostering multidisciplinary approaches to data-science education. This report encapsulates the collective vision of the workshop participants, whose contributions have set the stage for progressive strides in data-science education.

Abstract

Abstract A search for Higgs boson pair (HH) production in association with a vector boson V (W or Z boson) is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1. Both hadronic and leptonic decays of V bosons are used. The leptons considered are electrons, muons, and neutrinos. The HH production is searched for in the b b ¯ b b ¯ $$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ decay channel. An observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level of VHH production cross section is set at 294 (124) times the standard model prediction. Constraints are also set on the modifiers of the Higgs boson trilinear self-coupling, k λ , assuming k 2V = 1, and vice versa on the coupling of two Higgs bosons with two vector bosons, k 2V. The observed (expected) 95% confidence intervals of these coupling modifiers are −37.7 < k λ < 37.2 (−30.1 < k λ < 28.9) and −12.2 < k 2V < 13.5 (−7.2 < k 2V < 8.9), respectively.

Abstract

Abstract A search for a new charged particle X with mass between 0.3 and 2.0 TeV decaying to a W boson and a photon is presented, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1. Particle X has electric charge ±1 and is assumed to have spin 0. The search is performed using the electron and muon decays of the W boson. No significant excess above the predicted background is observed. The upper limit at 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section of the X and its branching fraction to a W boson and a photon is found to be 94 (137) fb for a 0.3 TeV resonance and 0.75 (0.81) fb for a 2.0 TeV resonance, for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%). This search presents the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of such resonances across the probed mass range. A statistical combination with an earlier study based on the hadronic decay mode of the W boson is also performed, and the upper limit at 95% confidence level for a 2.0 TeV resonance is reduced to 0.50 (0.63) fb for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%).

Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we develop a momentum super space formalism for N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1, 2 superconformal field theories in three dimensions. First, we solve for super-correlators in the usual momentum superspace variables. However, we found that expressing quantities in super space spinor helicity variables greatly simplifies the analysis. Further, by performing a “half” Fourier transform of the Grassmann coordinates which is analogous to the Twistor transform, an even more remarkable simplification occurs. Using this formalism, we first compute all three point correlation functions involving conserved super-currents with arbitrary spins in N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1, 2 theories. We discover interesting double copy relations in N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 super-correlators. Further, we discovered super double copy relations that take us from N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 to N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 super-correlators. We also extend our results to correlators involving scalars as well as to higher points. Further, we comment on the connection of our results with the flat space super amplitudes in one higher dimension.

This paper presents an exploratory study of student understanding of some of the elementary aspects of approximations encountered in college physics. For this purpose, a questionnaire (a set of 14 multiple-choice questions) was developed to probe how students dealt with these aspects in a variety of contexts. The questionnaire was finalized after a trial of its pilot version on 7 students on the basis of their written scripts and interviews. After content validation by three external experts, the test was administered to a sample of 141 senior undergraduate physics students from a diverse set of colleges and national institutes. Data analysis reveals several significant student pitfalls in the topic related principally to (i) the identification of a dimensionless ratio to characterize an approximation, (ii) the notion of the order of approximation and consistent handling of a problem up to the required order, and (iii) the notion of the order of infinitesimal in calculus-based derivations. The findings are of direct pedagogic relevance.

Abstract

In this paper, we study systems where each job or request can be split into a flexible number of sub-jobs up to a maximum limit. The number of sub-jobs a job is split into depends on the number of available servers found upon its arrival. All sub-jobs of a job are then processed in parallel at different servers leading to a linear speed-up of the job. We refer to such jobs as {\em adaptive multi-server jobs}. We study the problem of optimal assignment of such jobs when each server can process at most one sub-job at any given instant and there is no waiting room in the system. We assume that, upon arrival, a job can only access a randomly sampled subset of $k(n)$ servers from a total of $n$ servers, and the number of sub-jobs is determined based on the number of idle servers within the sampled subset. We analyze the steady-state performance of the system when system load varies according to $\lambda(n) =1 - \beta n^{-\alpha}$ for $\alpha \in [0,1)$, and $\beta \geq 0$. Our interest is to find how large the subset $k(n)$ should be in order to have zero blocking and maximum speed-up in the limit as $n \to \infty$. We first characterize the system's performance when the jobs have access to the full system, i.e., $k(n)=n$. In this setting, we show that the blocking probability approaches to zero at the rate $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ and the mean response time of accepted jobs approaches to its minimum achievable value at rate $O(1/n)$. We then consider the case where the jobs only have access to subset of servers, i.e., $k(n) < n$. We show that as long as $k(n)=\omega(n^\alpha)$, the same asymptotic performance can be achieved as in the case with full system access. In particular, for $k(n)=\Theta(n^\alpha \log n)$, we show that both the blocking probability and the mean response time approach to their desired limits at rate $O(n^{-(1-\alpha)/2})$.

Abstract

Low dynamic range (LDR) cameras cannot deal with wide dynamic range inputs, frequently leading to local overexposure issues. We present a learning-based system to reduce these artifacts without resorting to complex acquisition mechanisms like alternating exposures or costly processing that are typical of high dynamic range (HDR) imaging. We propose a transformer-based deep neural network (DNN) to infer the missing HDR details. In an ablation study, we show the importance of using a multiscale DNN and train it with the proper cost function to achieve state-of-the-art quality. To aid the reconstruction of the overexposed areas, our DNN takes a reference frame from the past as an additional input. This leverages the commonly occurring temporal instabilities of autoexposure to our advantage: since well-exposed details in the current frame may be overexposed in the future, we use reinforcement learning to train a reference frame selection DNN that decides whether to adopt the current frame as a future reference. Without resorting to alternating exposures, we obtain therefore a causal, HDR hallucination algorithm with potential application in common video acquisition settings. Abstract

This open-access dataset provides consistent records of air travel volumes between 205 airport catchments in Colombia and the associated number of reported human cases of Zika virus within these catchments during the arbovirus outbreak between October 2015 and September 2016. We associated in this dataset the monthly air travel volumes provided by the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority (AEROCIVIL) with the reported human cases of Zika Virus published by The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Our methodology consists of geocoding all the reported airports and identifying the catchment of each airport using the municipalities' boundaries since reported human cases of Zika Virus are available at the municipal level. In addition, we calculated the total population at risk in each airport catchment by combining the total population count in a catchment with the environmental suitability of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector for the Zika virus. We separated the monthly air travel volumes into domestic and international based on the location of the origin airport. The current dataset includes the total air travel volumes of 23,539,364 passengers on domestic flights and 11,592,197 on international ones. We validated our dataset by comparing the monthly aggregated air travel volumes between airport catchments to those predicted by the gravity model. We hope the novel dataset will provide a resource to researchers studying the role of human mobility in the spread of mosquito-borne diseases and modeling disease spread in realistic networks.

Abstract

Hash-based Proof-of-Work (PoW) used in the Bitcoin Blockchain leads to high energy consumption and resource wastage. In this paper, we aim to re-purpose the energy by replacing the hash function with real-life problems having commercial utility. We propose Chrisimos, a useful Proof-of-Work where miners are required to find a minimal dominating set for real-life graph instances. A miner who is able to output the smallest dominating set for the given graph within the block interval time wins the mining game. We also propose a new chain selection rule that ensures the security of the scheme. Thus our protocol also realizes a decentralized minimal dominating set solver for any graph instance. We provide formal proof of correctness and show via experimental results that the block interval time is within feasible bounds of hash-based PoW., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

The quantum gravity-induced entanglement of masses (QGEM) protocol for testing quantum gravity using entanglement witnessing utilizes the creation of spatial quantum superpositions of two neutral, massive matter-wave interferometers kept adjacent to each other, separated by a distance d. The mass and the spatial superposition should be such that the two quantum systems can entangle solely via the quantum nature of gravity. Despite being charge-neutral, there are many electromagnetic backgrounds that can also entangle the systems, such as the dipole-dipole interaction, and the Casimir-Polder interaction. To minimize electromagnetic-induced interactions between the masses it is pertinent to isolate the two superpositions by a conducting plate. However, the conducting plate will also exert forces on the masses and hence the trajectories of the two superpositions would be affected. To minimize this effect, we propose to trap the two interferometers such that the trapping potential dominates over the attraction between the conducting plate and the matter-wave interferometers. The superpositions can still be created via the Stern-Gerlach effect in the direction parallel to the plate, where the trapping potential is negligible. The combination of trapping and shielding provides a better parameter space for the parallel configuration of the experiment, where the requirement on the size of the spatial superposition, to witness the entanglement between the two masses purely due to their quantum nature of gravity, decreases by at least two orders of magnitude as compared to the original protocol paper., Comment: Version accepted to PRR

Abstract

A defining signature of classical systems is "in principle measurability" without disturbance: a feature manifestly violated by quantum systems. We describe a multi-interferometer experimental setup that can, in principle, reveal the nonclassicality of a spatial superposition-sourced gravitational field if an irreducible disturbance is caused by a measurement of gravity. While one interferometer sources the field, the others are used to measure the gravitational field created by the superposition. This requires neither any specific form of nonclassical gravity, nor the generation of entanglement between any relevant degrees of freedom at any stage, thus distinguishing it from the experiments proposed so far. This test, when added to the recent entanglement-witness based proposals, enlarges the domain of quantum postulates being tested for gravity. Motivated by the need for communication-efficient distributed learning, we investigate the method for compressing a unit norm vector into the minimum number of bits, while still allowing for some acceptable level of distortion in recovery. This problem has been explored in the rate-distortion/covering code literature, but our focus is exclusively on the "high-distortion" regime. We approach this problem in a worst-case scenario, without any prior information on the vector, but allowing for the use of randomized compression maps. Our study considers both biased and unbiased compression methods and determines the optimal compression rates. It turns out that simple compression schemes are nearly optimal in this scenario. Abstract

To test the quantum nature of gravity in a lab requires witnessing the entanglement between the two test masses (nano-crystals) solely due to the gravitational interaction kept at a distance in a spatial superposition. The protocol is known as the quantum gravity-induced entanglement of masses (QGEM). One of the main backgrounds in the QGEM experiment is electromagnetic (EM) induced entanglement and decoherence. The EM interactions can entangle the two neutral masses via dipole-dipole vacuum-induced interactions, such as the Casimir-Polder interaction. To mitigate the EM-induced interactions between the two nano-crystals, we enclose the two interferometers in a Faraday cage and separate them by a conducting plate. However, any imperfection on the surface of a nano-crystal, such as a permanent dipole moment will also create an EM background interacting with the conducting plate in the experimental box. These interactions will further generate EM-induced dephasing which we wish to mitigate. Abstract

Matter-wave interferometry with nanoparticles will enable the development of quantum sensors capable of probing ultraweak fields with unprecedented applications for fundamental physics. The high sensitivity of such devices however makes them susceptible to a number of noise and decoherence sources and as such can only operate when sufficient isolation from the environment is achieved. It is thus imperative to model and characterize the interaction of nanoparticles with the environment and to estimate its deleterious effects. The aim of this paper will be to study the decoherence of the matter-wave interferometer due to dipole-dipole interactions which is one of the unavoidable channels for decoherence even for a neutral micro-crystal. We will start the analysis from QED and show that it reduces to the scattering model characterized by the differential cross-section. We will then obtain simple expressions for the decoherence rate in the short and long wavelength limits that can be readily applied to estimate the available coherence time. We will conclude by applying the obtained formulae to estimate the dipole-dipole decoherence rate for the Quantum Gravity-induced Entanglement of Masses (QGEM) protocol and discuss if the effects should be mitigated., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The logistic regression model is one of the most popular data generation model in noisy binary classification problems. In this work, we study the sample complexity of estimating the parameters of the logistic regression model up to a given $\ell_2$ error, in terms of the dimension and the inverse temperature, with standard normal covariates. The inverse temperature controls the signal-to-noise ratio of the data generation process. While both generalization bounds and asymptotic performance of the maximum-likelihood estimator for logistic regression are well-studied, the non-asymptotic sample complexity that shows the dependence on error and the inverse temperature for parameter estimation is absent from previous analyses. We show that the sample complexity curve has two change-points in terms of the inverse temperature, clearly separating the low, moderate, and high temperature regimes.

119. Strategic Distribution Shift of Interacting Agents via Coupled Gradient Flows

Abstract

We propose a novel framework for analyzing the dynamics of distribution shift in real-world systems that captures the feedback loop between learning algorithms and the distributions on which they are deployed. Prior work largely models feedback-induced distribution shift as adversarial or via an overly simplistic distribution-shift structure. In contrast, we propose a coupled partial differential equation model that captures fine-grained changes in the distribution over time by accounting for complex dynamics that arise due to strategic responses to algorithmic decision-making, non-local endogenous population interactions, and other exogenous sources of distribution shift. We consider two common settings in machine learning: cooperative settings with information asymmetries, and competitive settings where a learner faces strategic users. For both of these settings, when the algorithm retrains via gradient descent, we prove asymptotic convergence of the retraining procedure to a steady-state, both in finite and in infinite dimensions, obtaining explicit rates in terms of the model parameters. To do so we derive new results on the convergence of coupled PDEs that extends what is known on multi-species systems. Empirically, we show that our approach captures well-documented forms of distribution shifts like polarization and disparate impacts that simpler models cannot capture.

Abstract

The half-Heusler alloy RuMnGa having valence electron count (VEC) 18 has recently been theoretically proposed to exhibit compensated ferrimagnetic (CFiM) character instead of the expected nonmagnetic ground state. On the other hand, a preliminary experimental study proposed ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. As no half-Heusler system with VEC 18 is known to exhibit magnetic ordering, we have investigated the details of crystal structure and magnetic properties of RuMnGa using a combination of experimental tools, viz., x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, dc and ac susceptibility, isothermal magnetisation, heat capacity, resistivity and neutron depolarisation measurements. Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron diffraction data suggest single phase nature of the compound with elemental composition RuMn$_{0.86}$Ga$_{1.14}$. We have shown that the system exhibits FM-type ordering owing to the inherent presence of this minor off-stoichiometry, showing very low magnetic moment. The system also exhibits reentrant canonical spin-glass behaviour, which is rarely observed in half-Heusler alloys. The temperature coefficient of resistivity changes its sign from negative to positive and further to negative as the temperature decreases.

121. Large saturation moment and high ferromagnetic transition temperature in a structurally disordered inverse Heusler alloy Fe2RuGe

Abstract

We report the successful synthesis of a new 4$d$ based polycrystalline inverse Heusler alloy Fe$_2$RuGe by an arc melting process and have studied in detail its structural, magnetic and transport properties complemented with first principle calculations. X-ray and neutron diffraction, Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and $^{57}$Fe M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopic studies confirm the single phase nature of the system where the Fe and Ru atoms are randomly distributed in the 4$c$ and 4$d$ Wyckoff positions in a ratio close to 50:50. The formation of the disordered structure is also confirmed by the theoretical energy minimization calculation. Despite the random cross-site disorder of Fe and Ru atoms, magnetic measurements suggest not only a high Curie temperature of $\sim$860\,K, but also a large saturation magnetic moment $\sim$4.9\,$\mu_B$ per formula unit at 5\,K, considerably exceeding the theoretical limit (4\,$\mu_B$ per formula unit) predicted by the Slater-Pauling rule. Only a few Fe-based inverse Heusler alloys are known to exhibit such high Curie temperatures. Neutron diffraction analysis coupled with the isothermal magnetization value indicates that the magnetic moments in Fe$_2$RuGe are associated with Fe-atoms only, which is also confirmed by M\"ossbauer spectrometry. Interestingly, in comparison to the cubic or hexagonal phase of the parent compound, Fe$_3$Ge, the Curie temperature of Fe$_2$RuGe has increased significantly despite the substitution of the nonmagnetic, yet isoelectronic element Ru in this structurally disordered compound. Our theoretical calculation reveals that the large Fe moment ($\sim2.8\mu_B$/Fe) on the 4$b$ site can be attributed to a charge transfer from this Fe site towards its Ru neighbours. Such a substantial increase in magnetic moment due to electron charge transfer has not previously been reported in a Heusler alloy system.

The case study reflects key considerations to ensure further students' success as universities in the UK shifted from face-to-face delivery to quick online delivery due to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 virus spreading in the UK and Globally. In addition, the case study provides key considerations during the curriculum development process, such as constructive alignment, students' backgrounds and diversity, and utilization of additional resources at the organizational level, such as Library Services and IT.

Abstract

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a chatbot launched by OpenAI on November 30, 2022. OpenAI's GPT-3 family of large language models serve as the foundation for ChatGPT. ChatGPT is fine-tuned with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques and has received widespread attention for its articulate responses across diverse domains of knowledge. In this study, we explore how ChatGPT can be used to help with common software engineering tasks. Many of the ubiquitous tasks covering the breadth of software engineering such as ambiguity resolution in software requirements, method name suggestion, test case prioritization, code review, log summarization can potentially be performed using ChatGPT. In this study, we explore fifteen common software engineering tasks using ChatGPT. We juxtapose and analyze ChatGPT's answers with the respective state of the art outputs (where available) and/or human expert ground truth. Our experiments suggest that for many tasks, ChatGPT does perform credibly and the response from it is detailed and often better than the human expert output or the state of the art output. However, for a few other tasks, ChatGPT in its present form provides incorrect answers and hence is not suited for such tasks.

145. GRACE: Loss-Resilient Real-Time Video through Neural Codecs

Abstract

In real-time video communication, retransmitting lost packets over high-latency networks is not viable due to strict latency requirements. To counter packet losses without retransmission, two primary strategies are employed -- encoder-based forward error correction (FEC) and decoder-based error concealment. The former encodes data with redundancy before transmission, yet determining the optimal redundancy level in advance proves challenging. The latter reconstructs video from partially received frames, but dividing a frame into independently coded partitions inherently compromises compression efficiency, and the lost information cannot be effectively recovered by the decoder without adapting the encoder. We present a loss-resilient real-time video system called GRACE, which preserves the user's quality of experience (QoE) across a wide range of packet losses through a new neural video codec. Central to GRACE's enhanced loss resilience is its joint training of the neural encoder and decoder under a spectrum of simulated packet losses. In lossless scenarios, GRACE achieves video quality on par with conventional codecs (e.g., H.265). As the loss rate escalates, GRACE exhibits a more graceful, less pronounced decline in quality, consistently outperforming other loss-resilient schemes. Through extensive evaluation on various videos and real network traces, we demonstrate that GRACE reduces undecodable frames by 95% and stall duration by 90% compared with FEC, while markedly boosting video quality over error concealment methods. In a user study with 240 crowdsourced participants and 960 subjective ratings, GRACE registers a 38% higher mean opinion score (MOS) than other baselines.

Abstract

The realization of spin-glass (S-G) state in Heusler alloys is very rare despite the presence of inherent structural and elemental disorder in those compounds. Although a few half and full Heusler alloys are known to exhibit S-G state, there is hardly any manifestation of the same in cases of quaternary Heusler compounds. Here we report the observation of S-G state in a highly disordered equiatomic quaternary Heusler compound: FeRuMnGa, where the S-G state is in between of canonical S-G and cluster glass. Different intricate features of S-G state including non-equilibrium magnetic dynamics at low temperature in the compound are unveiled through our comprehensive magnetic, heat capacity and neutron diffraction studies. The structural disorder in the sample is neither conventional \textit{A2}- nor \textit{B2}-type while those two types are commonly observed for Heusler compounds. The presence of disorder also plays a significant role in electron transport properties of the alloy, which is reflected in its exhibition of semi-metallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect at low temperature., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The pursuit of efficient spin-polarization in quaternary Heusler alloys with the general formula $XX'YZ$ (where X, $X'$, and Y are transition metals and Z is a p-block element), has been a subject of significant scientific interest. While previous studies shows that isoelectronic substitution of 4d element in place of 3d element in quaternary Heusler alloy, improves the half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics, our research on the quaternary Heusler alloy NiRuMnSn reveals a strikingly different scenario. In this study, we present a detailed structural analysis of the material using X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and neutron diffraction (ND) techniques, which confirms the formation of a single-phase compound with 50:50 site disorder between Ni/Ru atoms at 4c/4d sites. Contrary to expectations, our DFT calculations suggests a considerable decrease in spin-polarization even in the ordered structure. Additionally, we report on the compound's exceptional behavior, displaying a rare re-entrant spin glass property below $\sim$60 K, a unique and intriguing feature for quaternary Heusler-type compounds.

Abstract

The problem of organizing and finding images in a user's directory has become increasingly challenging due to the rapid growth in the number of images captured on personal devices. This paper presents a solution that utilizes zero shot learning to create image queries with only user provided text descriptions. The paper's primary contribution is the development of an algorithm that utilizes pre-trained models to extract features from images. The algorithm uses OWL to check for the presence of bounding boxes and sorts images based on cosine similarity scores. The algorithm's output is a list of images sorted in descending order of similarity, helping users to locate specific images more efficiently. The paper's experiments were conducted using a custom dataset to simulate a user's image directory and evaluated the accuracy, inference time, and size of the models. The results showed that the VGG model achieved the highest accuracy, while the Resnet50 and InceptionV3 models had the lowest inference time and size. The papers proposed algorithm provides an effective and efficient solution for organizing and finding images in a users local directory. The algorithm's performance and flexibility make it suitable for various applications, including personal image organization and search engines. Abstract

Quantum entanglement provides a novel way to test short-distance quantum physics in a non-relativistic regime. We provide entanglement-based protocols to potentially test the magnetically induced dipole-dipole interaction and the Casimir-Polder potential between the two nano-crystals kept in a Schrodinger Cat state. Our scheme is based on the Stern-Gerlach (SG) apparatus, where we can witness the entanglement mediated by these interactions for the nano-crystal mass m~10^-19 kg with a spatial superposition size of order 0.1 micron in a trap relying on diamagnetic levitation. We show that it is possible to close the SG interferometer in position and momentum with a modest gradient in the magnetic field., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We examine the quantum gravitational entanglement of two test masses in the context of linearized General Relativity with specific non-local interaction with matter. To accomplish this, we consider an energy-momentum tensor describing two test particles of equal mass with each possessing some non-zero momentum. After discussing the quantization of the linearized theory, we compute the gravitational energy shift which is operator-valued in this case. As compared to the local gravitational interaction, we find that the change in the gravitational energy due to the self-interaction terms is finite. We then move on to study the quantum gravity induced entanglement of masses for two different scenarios. The first scenario involves treating the two test masses as harmonic oscillators with an interaction Hamiltonian given by the aforesaid gravitational energy shift. In the second scenario, each of the test masses is placed in a quantum spatial superposition of two locations, based on their respective spin states, and their entanglement being induced by the gravitational interaction and the shift in the vacuum energy. For these two scenarios, we compute both the concurrence and the von Neumann entropy; showing that an increase in the non-locality of the gravitational interaction results in a decrease in both of these quantities., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, version published in PRD
