In most parts of the world, the Schirmer test (ST) is still the main test used by optometrists for the assessment of tear adequacy in the screening of potential contact lens wearers and as an aid in the diagnosis of "dry" eye. We tested the reliability of a 1-min ST in nine normal Hong Kong-Chinese (HK-Chinese) subjects during five to seven visits over a period of 2 weeks. For 4 of the subjects, the test consistently measured 0 mm/1 min, and 68% of the test results were less than 6 mm/1 min, a value suggested as the lower limit for normal asymptomatic eyes. The results obtained were inconsistent and it is concluded that the ST is unreliable and of little clinical value in this population.

The measurement of tear break-up time (TBUT) in assessing stability of the tear film is somewhat controversial, even though the technique is widely used. We examined reliability of the technique within and among examiners and conclude that measurements of TBUT can be made reliably; full-beam observation of the cornea is preferable to scanning the cornea with a narrow slit in making the measurements. There may be differences in TBUT measurements made in the same subjects among examiners, but these differences are smaller with more experienced practitioners. In the Hong Kong Chinese (HK-Chinese), tear break-up appears to be more likely to first occur in the inferior periphery of the cornea. In this population mean TBUT is about 7.20 s; assuming a Gaussian distribution of TBUT values, 2.1 s should be adopted as the lower limit for normal TBUT in HK-Chinese.

We derived estimates of the van Herick ratio or grading in a retrospective study using a Chinese clinical population. We found that the van Herick ratio decreased with age and increased with higher degrees of myopia. A lower van Herick ratio was found to be associated with higher intraocular pressure. There are significantly more patients with lower van Herick ratios or grades in our population than in populations described by others.

3,4-Dihydroisoquinoline N-oxide reacts with dimethylketene to form a 1 : 2 adduct (8) in addition to compounds (6) and (7). With cyano-t-butylketene and ethoxycarbonyl-t-butylketene the adducts (9a) and (9b) are formed. 3,3-Dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (21a) has been synthesized, but attempts to convert this into the nitrone (20b) were unsuccessful.

Background Despite being a well-established strategy for cost reduction in disease gene mapping, pooled DNA association study is much less popular than the individual DNA approach. This situation is especially true for pooled DNA genomewide association study (GWAS), for which very few computer resources have been developed for its data analysis. This motivates the development of UPDG (U tilities package for data analysis of P ooled D NA G WAS). Results UPDG represents a generalized framework for data analysis of pooled DNA GWAS with the integration of Unix/Linux shell operations, Perl programs and R scripts. With the input of raw intensity data from GWAS, UPDG performs the following tasks in a stepwise manner: raw data manipulation, correction for allelic preferential amplification, normalization, nested analysis of variance for genetic association testing, and summarization of analysis results. Detailed instructions, procedures and commands are provided in the comprehensive user manual describing the whole process from preliminary preparation of software installation to final outcome acquisition. An example dataset (input files and sample output files) is also included in the package so that users can easily familiarize themselves with the data file formats, working procedures and expected output. Therefore, UPDG is especially useful for users with some computer knowledge, but without a sophisticated programming background. Conclusions UPDG provides a free, simple and platform-independent one-stop service to scientists working on pooled DNA GWAS data analysis, but with less advanced programming knowledge. It is our vision and mission to reduce the hindrance for performing data analysis of pooled DNA GWAS through our contribution of UPDG. More importantly, we hope to promote the popularity of pooled DNA GWAS, which is a very useful research strategy.
