Abstract

A cubic Er2Ge2O7 pyrochlore was prepared under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions and its magnetic ground state was investigated by measurements of specific heat, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature, pressure, and magnetic field. We found that Er2Ge2O7 undergoes a long-range antiferromagnetic transition at TN ≈ 1.4 K, which can be further enhanced by applying external physical pressure. On the other hand, application of external magnetic fields suppresses the antiferromagnetic order to zero temperature around Hc ≈ 2.3 T, where a magnetic-field-induced spin-flop transition was observed. Hc increases accordingly with increasing TN under external pressure. A comparison of the magnetic ground states and structural variations along the isostructural series Er2B2O7 (B = Sn, Ti, Ge) together with the high-pressure study on Er2Ge2O7 indicated that the magnetic properties of these highly frustrated XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets are very sensitive to the minute structural changes that determine the anisotropic exchange interactions and the local crystal-electric-field environments of Er3+ ions.

Abstract

Most of the Eu compounds are in the divalent (Eu) electronic state and order magnetically. On the other hand, the Eu-trivalent (Eu) compounds exist but are small in number. An energy difference between the Euand Eustates is, however, not extremely large. Therefore, the valence transition occurs in some Eu compounds. We present the characteristic properties of the Eu compounds from several viewpoints: a canting magnetisation in the Eu-antiferromagnets, the Fermi surface property in the Eu-compounds of EuPdand EuCoSi, the heavy fermion state in EuNiP, the temperature-induced valence transition in EuPdSi, the pressure-induced valence transition in EuRhSiand EuRuP, and the heavy fermion state approaching to the quantum critical point with increasing pressure in EuNiGe. Abstract

Oral malignancy is rare in chimpanzees. A 34-year-old female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) at Kumamoto Sanctuary, Japan, had developed it. Treatment is technically difficult for chimpanzees while malignant neoplasm is seemingly rising in captive populations. Widespread expert discussion, guidelines for treatment, especially for great apes in terminal stages is urgently needed.

132. Pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature of the filled skutterudite YFe4P12

Abstract

We have studied the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the filled skutterudite YFe4P12 under various quasihydrostatic pressures up to 8 GPa. DC magnetization measurements up to 1.2 GPa in a piston-cylinder cell yields a linear increase of Tc with a positive coefficient dTc/dP = 1 K/GPa. Resistivity measurements up to 8 GPa in a cubic anvil apparatus show that Tc increases to 9.3 K at 8 GPa, but the slope decreases gradually with increasing pressure. Besides the previously reported LaFe4P12, YFe4P12 becomes the second filled skutterudite superconductor that exhibits a positive pressure coefficient dTc/dP in a broad pressure range. The observed large dTc/dP > 0 of YFe4P12 can be rationalized by our band-structure calculations that show an enhancement of density of states at Fermi energy and the Hopfield parameter under pressure at least up to 8 GPa. On the other hand, similar calculations predict a dTc/dP < 0 for YRu4P12.

Abstract

Pressure-induced superconductivity was studied for a spin-ladder cuprate Sr2Ca12Cu24O41 using nuclear magnetic resonance under pressures up to the optimal pressure 3.8 GPa. Pressure application leads to a transitional change from a spin-gapped state to a Fermi-liquid state at temperatures higher than Tc. The relaxation rate 1/ T1 shows activated-type behavior at an onset pressure, whereas Korringa-like behavior becomes predominant at the optimal pressure, suggesting that an increase in the density of states at the Fermi energy leads to enhancement of Tc. Nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra suggest that pressure application causes transfer of holes from the chain to the ladder sites. The transfer of holes increases DOS below the optimal pressure. A dome-shaped Tc versus pressure curve arises from naive balance between the transfer of holes and broadening of the band width.

The physical characteristics of seeds (e.g. dry seed weight, volume and specific gravity) vary among plant species, which might cause a difference in seed movement through the gastrointestinal system. We conducted feeding experiments with captive female Japanese macaques Macaca fuscata (n=5) using eight different types of seeds to evaluate the effects of the physical characteristics of seeds on their passage time. The median seed recovery percentage for the real seeds was 35.5% (range, 24–78%). Among three passage time variables examined, the mean retention time (MRT) (37–54 h) and time of last appearance of a seed (TLA) (53–109 h) differed significantly among seed types, and the former differed significantly among individuals. Transit time (TT) (22–35 h) did not. The generalized linear models (GLM) selected dry seed weight as the most important factor affecting MRT, and specific gravity of seeds as the most important factor affecting TLA. This implies that (1) heavier seeds and (or) seeds with greater specific gravity remain in the gut longer and are likely to be dispersed farther from the parent plant; (2) the lighter seeds and (or) seeds with lower specific gravity are dispersed nearer the parent. Our study demonstrated the importance of considering the effects of the physical characteristics of seeds on the manner in which primates disperse plant species, although we should consider the effect of the individual variation in the passage time, too.

Abstract

In strongly correlated electron systems, a fundamental understanding of the quantum critical behavior in the vicinity of a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) remains one of the important issues for decades. In particular, the unconventional criticality, which cannot be explained by the spin fluctuation theory, has attracted much attention in 4felectron systems, and the role of the valence instability has been discussed both from theoretical and experimental points of view. Here, we present our systematic high pressure study of X-ray absorption spectra on YbNiGaand EuFeAs, revealing the characteristic pressure-induced valence crossover and possibly the relevance of the valence instability to the physical properties near the magnetic QCP.
