The thermal shock resistance of hafnia based composites containing graphite powder or tungsten fibers was investigated in terms of material properties which include thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, compressive fracture stress, modulus of elasticity, and phase stability in terms of the processing parameters of hot pressing pressure and/or density, degree of stabilization of the hafnia, and composition. All other parameters were held constant or assumed constant. The thermal shock resistance was directly proportional to the compressive fracture stress to modulus of elasticity ratio and was not affected appreciably by the small thermal expansion or thermal conductivity changes. This ratio was found to vary strongly with the composition and density such that the composites containing graphite had relatively poor thermal shock resistance, while the composites containing tungsten had superior thermal shock resistance.

The necessity of having nonflammable versions of potting and encapsulating compounds and conformal coatings for space vehicles is discussed. The formulation, EPOCAST 87517 A/B, was found to have the best balance of thermal, electrical, mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of those evaluated. The requirements which this formulation did not meet are listed, and other formulations which were evaluated are summarized. Recommendations for improving EPOCAST 87517 A/B are included.

Tables are presented which include: material properties; elemental analysis; silicone RTV formulations; polyester systems and processing; epoxy preblends and processing; urethane materials and processing; epoxy-urethanes elemental analysis; flammability test results, and vacuum effects.

Dynamic mechanical spectra of amorphous stereoregular poly(methyl methacrylate)s and poly(t-butyl methacrylate)s with assigned microtacticities are presented and discussed. An intermolecular argument is invoked to account for the higher glass transition temperature of syndiotactic vis a vis isotactic PMMA, in spite of the higher density of the latter at 30 C. An argument is presented to show that the ratio of glassy-region relaxation temperature to glass transition temperature is not only a measure of the degree of coupling of the beta and glass transition processes, but also of the degree to which intermolecular factors influence these processes. The greater extent of the low-temperature irreversibilities observed in the thermomechanical spectra of poly(t-butyl methacrylate)s is attributed to the brittle character induced by the bulky side groups which presumably weaken cohesive forces.

Particular attention is given to polybenzimidazoles derived from the condensation of tetraaminobiphenyl and diphenylisophthalate. The polybenzimidazoles can be prepared by the condensation of equimolar amounts of the monomers in the absence of solvent. However, the polymerization has also been carried out in a variety of solvents. The polybenzimidazoles have excellent technical possibilities. These possibilities have currently not yet been commercially realized.

Coating compositions were evaluated for oxidation protection of directionally solidified composite alloy NiTaC-13. These coatings included three NiCrAlY compositions (30-5-1, 25-10-1 and 20-15-1), two FeCrAlY compositions (30-5-1 and 25-10-1), a CoCrAlY composition (25-10-1), and one duplex coating, Ni-35Cr + Al. Duplicate pin samples of each composition were evaluated using two cyclic furnace oxidation tests of 100 hours at 871 C and 500 hours at 1093 C. The two best coatings were Ni-20Cr-15Al-lY and Ni-35Cr + Al. The two preferred coatings were deposited on pins and were evaluated in detail in .05 Mach cyclic burner rig oxidation to 1093 C. The NiCrAlY coating was protective after 830 hours of cycling, while the duplex coating withstood 630 hours. Test bars were coated and cycled for up to 500 hours. Tensile tests indicated no effect of coatings on strength. In 871 C air stress rupture, a degradation was observed for coated relative to bare material. The cycled NiCrAlY coating offered excellent protection with properties superior to the bare cycled NiTaC-13 in 1093 C air stress rupture.

Fabrication and microstructure control studies were conducted on SiC, Si3N and composites based on Si3N. Charpy mode impact testing to 2400 F established that Si3N4/Mo composites have excellent potential. Attempts to fabricate composites of Si3N4 with superalloys, both by hot pressing and infiltration were largely unsuccessful in comparison to using Mo, Re, and Ta which are less reactive. Modest improvements in impact strength were realized for monolithic Si3N4; however, SiC strengths increased by a factor of six and now equal values achieved for Si3N4. Correlations of impact strength with material properties are discussed. Reduced MgO densification aid additions to Si3N4 were found to decrease densification kinetics, increase final porosity, decrease room temperature bend strength, increase high temperature bend strength, and decrease bend stress rupture properties. The decrease in bend strength at high temperature for fine grain size SiC suggested that a slightly larger grain size material with a nearly constant strength-temperature relation may prove desirable in the creep and stress rupture mode.

Paper honeycomb is used for the construction of conventional, propeller-type, windmill blades. Using fairly simple techniques and conventional power tools, it is possible to shape both simple foils and more complex foils with or without tapered plan forms and with or without varying profiles. A block of honeycomb, in its compressed form, is mounted on a wedge and run through a bandsaw with the table at an appropriate tilt angle. It is the combination of the wedge angle and the table angle that gives the tapered planform and profile shape. Next the honeycomb is expanded on the shaft and jigged to give the desired angles of attack. With the honeycomb fixed in position, the blade is covered with a fine weave fiberglass cloth. Any surface quality can then be achieved with filling and sanding.

Phase change paint tests of a Rockwell International .00593-scale space shuttle orbiter were conducted in the Langley Research Center's Variable Density Wind Tunnel. The test objectives were to determine the effects of various wing/underbody configurations on the aerodynamic heating rates and boundary layer transition during simulated entry conditions. Several models were constructed. Each varied from the other in either wing cuff radius, airfoil thickness, or wing-fuselage underbody blending. Two ventral fins were glued to the fuselage underside of one model to test the interference heating effects. Simulated Mach 8 entry data were obtained for each configuration at angles of attack ranging from 25 to 40 deg, and a Reynolds number variation of one million to eight million. Elevon, bodyflap, and rudder flare deflections were tested. Oil flow visualization and Schlieren photographs were obtained to aid in reducing the phase change paint data as well as to observe the flow patterns peculiar to each configuration.

Polymers and other dielectric materials are frequently used for many purposes in the construction of cryogenic apparatus. Yet very few values of the thermal properties of these materials below 4 K have been reported. It is, however, known that one can not use the Debye theory to extrapolate to lower temperatures the measurements of the specific heat capacity above 1 K. The thermal conductivity also follows no theoretically predictable temperature dependence. As a by-product of our studies of the thermal properties of amorphous and partly crystalline materials below 4 K, we wish to report values for the thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and velocity of sound below 4 K in materials useful for the construction of cryogenic apparatus. In this article we will describe our measurement techniques and report values for polycarbonate (Lexan). In subsequent notes we will give values for other materials of interest.

Results are given of a class of silicone paints undergoing space qualification on IMP-H. In addition to ultraviolet irradiation, samples are presently reclining about 10 to the 16th power solar wind protons per year. Preliminary data, covering the time span of the first anniversary, give incremental solar absorptances of 0.03 for two white paints, and 0.01 for leafing aluminum and a green tinted white paint. Complementing these data are complete descriptions of techniques used in making these paints, stabilizing the zinc oxide pigment, and choosing a solvent. Outgassing characteristics of finished coatings are also included. An attempt toward unification of these various aspects of the aerospace paint problem is provided through documented photochemical reactions, and a generalized band representation of the problem and its solutions.

Results of tests conducted to evaluate the behavior of nonmetallic materials in hydrogen are described. The reaction propagation test simulates the conditions resulting from the interaction of an electrical wire in an overload condition in contract with a material in the test medium. The test is designed to evaluate the behavior of a material subjected to an energy input (usually heat) sufficient to cause a reaction which propagates to consume larger quantities of the material. Ten nonmetallic materials were evaluated to establish baseline data on the behavior of nonmetallic materials in hydrogen and to characterize, on an initial basis, one mode of material failure considered to be a factor pertinent to the safe use of a material in hydrogen.

The results are presented of a program to improve the reusable surface insulation (RSI) system through the improvement of the LI-1500 material properties and the simplification of the RSI system. The improvements made include: 2500 F-capability RSI systems, water-impervious surface coatings, establishment of a high-emittance coating constituent, development of a secondary water-reduction system, and achievement of a lower density (9 pcf) RSI material.

Carbon-phenolic material consisting of 50 percent carbon fibers and 50 percent phenolic resin was flight tested on a recoverable spacecraft launched by the Pacemaker vehicle system. The heat shield of the spacecraft was fabricated so that the carbon fibers in the ablator material had different orientations over several areas of the spacecraft. The environment in which the spacecraft was tested produced heating rates on the hemispherical nose up to 13.6 MW/sq m (1200 Btu/sq ft/sec) and stagnation-point pressures up to 1.27 MN/sq m (12.5 atm). The experimental results are presented. Due to high heating rates and possible spallation and mechanical char removal the greatest mass loss occurred in the nose region. Essentially uniform surface recession and char thickness were observed on the conical section of the spacecraft. A comparison of measured heating rates with computed turbulent and laminar heating rates, as well as measurements of sound-pressure fluctuations in the boundary layer obtained with acoustic sensors, indicated that the boundary layer underwent transition. The acoustic sensor provides an interesting new data form for the general study of boundary-layer transition for free-flight investigations.

A number of new glass compositions have been prepared with increased emphasis on compositions without beryllia. Glass preparations have been much more broadly based and have included the eutectic glass fields, and the mullite-rare earth glass systems. Of the new glasses, the best non-toxic composition is UARL 472 with a bulk modulus of only 18.20 million psi. A second experimental glass, UARL 417, was chosen for research in making large quantities of fiber in monofilament form. Tests of these UARL 417 epoxy resin samples in comparison to similar composites made with the DuPont organic fiber, PRD-49-1, show that the UARL composites have a compressive strength 41/2 times higher and a specific compressive strength at least 21/2 times greater. Much of the research effort attempted to answer the question of why a given glass should have an impact strength superior to other glasses. No definitive answer to the question was found.

The status of several coating programs is reviewed. These include efforts on protecting aircraft gas turbine engine materials from oxidation/corrosion and on protecting refractory metal reentry heat shields from oxidation.

A conceptual study of physical vapor-deposition processes for in-space fabrication of thin-film structures is presented. Potential advantages of in-space fabrication are improved structural integrity and surface reflectivity of free-standing ultra-thin films and coatings. Free-standing thin-film structures can find use as photon propulsion devices (solar sails). Other applications of the concept involve free-standing shadow shields, or thermal control coatings of spacecraft surfaces. Use of expendables (such as booster and interstage structures) as source material for the physical vapor deposition process is considered. The practicability of producing thin, textured, aluminum films by physical vapor deposition and subsequent separation from a revolving substrate is demonstrated by laboratory experiments. Heating power requirement for the evaporation process is estimated for a specific mission.

Studies and experiments are presented on carbon, boron, aluminum oxide, zirconium silicate, aluminum, and titanium vapor-deposited on polyimide film substrates.

An evaluation has been made of the thermal aspects of utilizing advanced filamentary composite materials as primary structures on the shuttle vehicle. The technical objectives of this study are to: (1) establish and design concepts for maintaining material temperatures within allowable limits at TPS attachments and or penetrations applicable to the space shuttle; and (2) verify the thermal design analysis by testing selected concepts. Specific composite materials being evaluated are boron epoxy, graphite/epoxy, boron polyimide, and boron aluminum; graphite/polyimide has been added to this list for property data identification and preliminary evaluation of thermal design problems. The TPS standoff to composite structure attachment over-temperature problem is directly related to TPS maximum surface temperature. To provide a thermally comprehensive evaluation of attachment temperature characteristics, maximum surface temperatures of 900 F, 1200 F, 1800 F, 2500 F and 3000 F are considered in this study. This range of surface temperatures and the high and low maximum temperature capability of the selected composite materials will result in a wide range of thermal requirements for composite/TPS standoff attachments.

Improved thermally stable laminating resins were developed based on the addition-type pyrolytic polymerization. Detailed monomer and polymer synthesis and characterization studies identified formulations which facilitate press molding processing and autoclave fabrication of glass and graphite fiber reinforced composites. A specific resin formulation, termed P10P was utilized to prepare a Courtaulds HMS reinforced simulated airfoil demonstration part by an autoclave molding process.

Sapphire and ruby were very difficult to press-forge because they deformed without cracking only in a limited temperature range before they melted. Spinel crystals were somewhat easier and MgO, CaO, and TiC crystals much easier to forge. The degree of recrystallization that occurred during forging (which was related to the ease and type of slip intersections) varied from essentially zero in Al2O3 to complete (i.e., random polycrystalline bodies were produced) in CaO. Forging of bi- and polycrystalline bodies produced incoherent bodies as a result of grain-boundary sliding. Strengths of the forged crystals were comparable to those of dense polycrystalline bodies of similar grain size. However, forged and recrystallized CaO crystals were ductile at lower temperatures than dense hot-pressed CaO. This behavior is attributed to reduced grain-boundary impurities and porosity. Fracture origins could be located, indicating that fracture in the CaO occurs internally as a result of surface work hardening caused by machining.

Manufacturing processes were developed for TD-NiCr providing small sheet (45 x 90 cm), and larger sheet (60 x 150 cm) and foil. The alternate alloy, DS-NiCr, was produced by pack-chromizing Ni-ThO2 sheet. Formability criteria are being established for basic sheet forming processes, which are brake forming, corrugation forming, joggling, dimpling, and beading. Resistance spot welding (fusion and solid state), resistance seam welding, solid state diffusion welding, and brazing are included in the joining programs. Major emphasis is centered on an Al-modified Ni-Cr-ThO2 alloy development. These alloys, containing 3 to 5% Al, form the protective Al2O3 scale. This enhances oxidation resistance under reentry conditions. Both TD-NiCrAl and DS-NiCrAl alloys are included. A tentative composition of Ni-16Cr-3.5Al-2ThO2 was selected based on oxidation resistance and fabricability.

The effects of aging, vacuum exposure, and thermal cycling on the dimensional stability of mirror-substrate materials, fused silica, Cer-Vit, Kanigen-coated beryllium, polycrystalline silicon, and U.L.E. fused silica were investigated. A multiple-beam interferometer was used to determine nonrecoverable surface-shape changes of the 12.7-cm-diameter mirrors with substrates of these materials. Thermal cycling and aging in vacuum produced the largest changes, but only a few were as large as 1/30 wavelength, where the wavelength was 632.8 nm.

The design, development, fabrication, and qualification load testing of the reflector support truss for Applications Technology Satellites F and G are described. Because the truss is stability-critical, high modulus graphite epoxy composite was used to provide a minimum weight structure. The work was performed under the sponsorship of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center with Fairchild Industries as the prime contractor.

Some of the test techniques used to evaluate the outgassing and contamination characteristics of prospective Apollo telescope mount (ATM) materials are reviewed. These include a screening test providing information on weight losses of materials, weights of their condensed outgas products, and white-light scattered by the condensed products. They also include an ultraviolet-region screening test and a comprehensive continuous in situ weight-loss test. Examples are presented of data obtained from each of the tests on various prospective ATM materials.

This paper deals with the statistical analysis of strength and fracture of materials in general, with application to fiber composites. The 'weakest link' model is considered in a fairly general form, and the resulting equations are demonstrated by using a Weibull distribution for flaws. This distribution appears naturally in a variety of problems, and therefore additional attention is devoted to analysis and statistical estimation connected with this distribution. Special working charts are included to facilitate interpretation of observed data and estimation of parameters. Implications of the size effect are considered for various kinds of flaw distributions. The paper describes failure and damage in a fiber-reinforced systems.

Obtained measurement data on the Debye contribution to the specific heat, the specific heat, and the thermal conductivity in polymers below 4 deg K are discussed. The results obtained suggest that impurities are responsible for the apparent thermal properties of polymers and glasses at low temperatures. In order to determine the intrinsic behavior of amorphous solids, measurements must be made at temperatures low enough to freeze out the local modes.

Fabrics knitted or woven from polybenzimidazole (PBI) fibers were treated to reduce flammability in oxygen atmospheres, particularly that of 5 psia oxygen. Bromination to approximately 15% weight gain of such fabrics led to markedly lower burning rates; samples brominated to over 80% weight gain were self-extinguishing in 5 psia oxygen. The loss in tensile strength of fabrics due to bromination was negligible although shrinkage was observed. Free fibers showed negligible losses on bromination. Treatment of PBI fabric with organophosphorus compounds also achieved self-extinguishing character in 5 psia oxygen but the enhanced flameproofing was largely lost on leaching. Reaction with POCl3 in pyridine led to a permanent reduction in flammability.

The basic concepts associated with the friction and wear of materials are discussed as they relate to ceramics. Properties of ceramics such as crystal structure, crystallographic orientation, mechanical deformation, and surface chemistry are reviewed as they influence friction and wear. Both adhesive and abrasive wear of ceramics are discussed. The friction and wear of ceramics are examined in contact with themselves and when in contact with metals. The influences of environmental constituents such as water and hydrocarbons on friction and wear are reviewed. Materials discussed, by way of example, include aluminum oxide, rutile, calcium fluoride, and lithium fluoride.

Tubular specimens were potted in metal grips to determine the feasibility of this gripping method in applying multiaxial loads. Strain gage rosettes were used to assess grip transitional strains, through thickness strain variation and strain variations along the tube length and circumference. The investigation was limited to loading 0 deg, + or - 45 deg, and 90 deg graphite/epoxy and glass/epoxy tubes in axial tension. Results include modifications made to the grips to reduce transitional strains, illustrations of the tube failure modes, and some material properties. The gripping concept shows promise as a satisfactory technique for applying multiaxial loads to high strength, high modulus fiber composite tubes.

The effect of microstructures of tungsten cladding on the transport rates of carbide fuel components was studied at 2073 K. hyperstoichiometric 90UC-10ZrC containing 4 wt% tungsten was clad with six types of tungsten material of 40 mil thickness. Screening tests of 1000 hours were carried out, and then selected samples were subjected to long-term tests up to 10,000 hours. The results indicate that the microstructures strongly affect the transport rates of carbide fuel components. The conditions for preparing (110) oriented cylindrical chloride tungsten emitters of high vacuum work functions were also investigated. Specimen sets were deposited on fluoride tungsten substrates for evaluating the effects of various deposition parameters on the degree and uniformity of the (110) preferred orientation and the vacuum work function. Long-term tests showed that the high vacuum work function of a cylindrical emitter was stable and the chloride tungsten to fluoride tungsten bond remained in excellent shape after 4850 hours at 2073 K.

A method for preparing thermally stable resin-fiber-reinforced composites by using solutions of appropriate monomers is described. Solutions containing a dimethyl ester of an aryl tetracarboxylic acid, the monomethyl ester of nadic acid, and an aryl diamine were used to impregnate graphite fibers. Composites fabricated from these prepregs exhibited excellent thermo-oxidative stability and retention of mechanical properties at 315 C (600 F). These results compare favorably to those obtained from composites made from amide-acid prepolymers capped with reactive alicyclic rings. Monomeric solutions provide excellent shelf life and improved solubility compared to amide-acid prepolymer solutions.

An exploratory evaluation of ceramics for automobile thermal reactors was conducted. Potential ceramic materials were evaluated in several reactor designs using both engine dynamometer and vehicle road tests. Silicon carbide contained in a corrugated metal support structure exhibited the best performance lasting over 800 hours in engine dynamometer tests and over 15,000 miles (24,200 km) of vehicle road tests. Reactors containing glass-ceramic components did not perform as well as silicon carbide. But the glass-ceramics still offer good potential for reactor use. The results of this study are considered to be a reasonable demonstration of the potential use of ceramics in thermal reactors.

Thermophysical property measurements were made under transient heating conditions on several materials being considered for use in SCOUT rocket motors. The materials included were ATJ graphite, MX 2600 silica phenolic, FM 5272 cellulose phenolic, and two carbon-carbon composites: CARBITEX 700 and RPP-4. The ATJ was included as a reference or base line material to check performance of the transient tests as it was not expected to be sensitive to heating rate. Measurements included in the program were thermal conductivity, strength, compressive stress-strain (carbon-carbon only), thermal expansion and the effective thermal expansion under partially restrained conditions. Development of this latter measurement was a major part of the program. It consisted of partially restraining the expansion of a specimen as it was heated, measuring the load and strain which occurred (together with a simultaneous modulus determination by superimposing a small cyclic load) and using these quantities to calculate what the effective thermal expansion would have to be to produce the observed stress and deformation. For materials which are sensitive to heating rate, such as reinforced phenolics, it was believed that this would provide a more realistic determination of the thermal expansion as it more nearly simulates the conditions experienced in end use.

The phenomenon of wall contraction characterized by a peak in the velocity field relationship and a region of negative differential mobility is observed. Uniaxial magnetic thin films of various compositions and magnetic properties are studied in careful interrupted pulse experiments. The observed results agree quite well with the theory for bulk samples.

A light scattering particle size test which can be used with materials having a broad particle size distribution is described. This test is useful for pigments. The relation between the particle size distribution of a rutile pigment and its optical performance in a gray tint test at low pigment concentration is calculated and compared with experimental data.

A dielectric breakdown study was made of several materials proposed for high-voltage (16-kV) use on solar-cell arrays at space conditions. The tests were made in an argon plasma whose electron density and temperature approximately simulated conditions at an altitude of 300 km. The maximum voltage used was 20 kV. The results indicate that the breakdown voltages of the materials tested are larger than those quoted in the literature for dielectric between two metal electrodes.

Under NAS 8-27435, the Convair Aerospace Division of General Dynamics and their subcontractor, Hercules Incorporated, have conducted studies on the effects of moisture on the properties of fiber-reinforced resin composites and on the epoxy resins presently used in advanced composites. Data are presented on the resins and composites subjected to varying time/temperature/humidity or time/temperature/water-boil exposures. The effects of moisture on matrix, reinforcement, and fiber/resin interface are discussed and supported by experimental test data.

Both composite and free strands have been tested to study matrix effectiveness. Glass from different lots were used, and processing parameters were varied to demonstrate the effects of material variability. The statistical patterns that emerge from these experiments show that lifetime distributions are characteristically skewed. As a class, the lifetime distributions are well approximated by the reduced form of the Weibull distribution. The strength retention data display little early degradation. The retained-strength distributions can also be classed as Weibull distributions. A statistical model applied to the data gives predictions of progressive failure, strength retention path, and expected life for two basic types of internal fracture processes.

As a result of the Apollo 13 incident, increased emphasis is being placed on materials compatibility in a high pressure GOX environment. It is known that in addition to impact sensitivity of materials, approximately adiabatic compression conditions can contrive to induce materials reactivity. Test runs at high pressure using the ABMA tester indicate the following: (1) The materials used in the tests showed an inverse relationship between thickness and impact sensitivity. (2) Several materials tested exhibited greater impact sensitivity in GOX than in LOX. (3) The impact sensitivity of the materials tested in GOX, at the pressures tested, showed enhanced impact sensitivity with higher pressure. (4) The rank ordering of the materials tested in LOX up to 1000 psia is the same as the rank ordering resulting from tests in LOX at 14.7 psia.

Discussion of a problem encountered in the processing of viscoelastic materials that is caused by the presence of a hydrodynamic instability in the extrusion of polymer melts. The importance of the so-called Weissenberg number in determining the onset of the melt fracture is examined using classical linearized hydrodynamic stability analysis. It is shown that the simple shearing flow of a viscoelastic fluid becomes unstable at a critical value of the Weissenberg number. Implications for the extrusion processing of polymers are reviewed.

Description of a technique for separating small-diameter whiskers from the as-grown matt by gently agitating the whisker matts in a solution of deionized or distilled water for six to eight hours. High-strength Al2O3 whiskers were effectively separated by this technique, comprising an average 48% of the original weight of the whisker matt. According to estimation, more than 90% of separated whiskers had diameters between 0.7 and 2.0 microns.

Composite micromechanics and macromechanics and the miniature Izod impact test are used to investigate the impact resistance of unidirectional composites. Several composite systems are examined both theoretically and experimentally. The composites are classified theoretically with respect to their impact resistance for longitudinal, transverse, and shear modes. Experimental results are reported only for Izod impact with the fibers either parallel or transverse to the cantilever longitudinal axis. Impact resistance design criteria which evolved during this investigation are used to design hybrid composites with improved impact resistance. The results show that in situ fiber and matrix elongation to fracture, matrix modulus, fabrication process, fiber and void volume ratios, and microresidual stresses are variables which affect the impact resistance.

The results of an investigation of domain wall motion excited by slow rise-time, bipolar, hard-axis pulses in vacuum deposited CoNiFe films 1500A to 2000A thick are presented. The results are consistent with those of comparable NiFe films in spite of large differences in film properties. The present low frequency creep data together with previously published results in this and other laboratories can be accounted for by a model which requires that the wall structure change usually associated with low frequency creep be predominately a gyromagnetic process. The correctness of this model is reinforced by the observation that the wall coercive force, the planar wall mobility, and the occurrence of an abrupt wall structure change are the only properties closely correlated to the creep displacement characteristics of a planar wall in low dispersion films.

Tensile and creep data of PRD49-1 and -3 fiber/epoxy resin composites are presented. Tensile data were obtained from 20 K (-423 F) to 477 K (400 F). Tensile strengths and moduli were determined at selected temperatures. Creep data up to 1000 hours are presented of fiber composites at 279 K (75 F), 422 K (300 F), and 450 K (350 F) at stress levels of approximately 50 and 80 percent of the ultimate tensile strength at 297 K (75 F). Details are presented of tensile specimens and test procedures used in the investigation.

A program was conducted to evaluate an in situ dynamic modulus measurement on a solid propellant exposed to vacuum environment. The prediction of long-term vacuum exposure effects is examined.

A method for evaluating outgassing characteristics of space-sensitive materials was devised by modifying a thermogravimetric balance so that a continual weight loss trace is obtained as a function of time at constant temperature and nearly constant pressure. In addition the apparatus is capable of collecting room temperature condensibles during the outgassing run. A series of silicone-coated glass cloth samples were evaluated by this method. The major advantage of the technique is that data presentation is developed in the form of a continuous trace. This data can then be utilized to develop the kinetics of weight loss. The technique has been shown to be a useful and valid one for indicating small differences between materials under vacuum and elevated temperature conditions.

The elementary classical models for idealized diffusion conditions are described, and the principles are then used in developing more realistic models. The practical models require some type of numerical analysis. The numerical techniques are outlined and details concerning their implementation are given. Some results are presented which were obtained with the computer programs implementing the numerical techniques with implicit and explicit methods. Special problems of impurity-rich interlayers forming between an oxide and silicon are considered. A set of computed curves for sheet resistance, junction depth, and oxide thickness for different diffusion schedules is included.

A method is presented by which the modulus obtained from a stress relaxation test can be used to estimate the modulus which would be obtained from a sonic vibration test. The method was applied to stress relaxation, sonic vibration, and high speed stress-strain data which was obtained on a flexible epoxy. The modulus as measured by the three test methods was identical for identical test times, and a change of test temperature was equivalent to a shift in the logarithmic time scale. An estimate was then made of the dynamic modulus of moldings of two Pyrrones and two polyimides, using stress relaxation data and the method of analysis which was developed for the epoxy. Over the common temperature range (350 to 500 K) in which data from both types of tests were available, the estimated dynamic modulus value differed by only a few percent from the measured value. As a result, it is concluded that, over the 500 to 700 K temperature range, the estimated dynamic modulus values are accurate.
