Abstract

Non-lysogenic clones were recovered from 3 out of 9 lysogenic strains of Corynebacterium ovis and 4 out of 8 lysogenic strains of C. ulcerans which had been maintained in diffusion chambers for 2-5 weeks within the peritoneal cavities of fowls or turkeys previously immunized with suspensions of the phages carried by the respective organisms.

126. Efficient, High Gain Parametric Generation in ADP Continuously Tunable across the Visible Spectrum

Abstract

Coherent visible light, continuously tunable over the range from 4200A to 7300A, has been obtained by pumping an ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) crystal with ultraviolet fourth harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser. Parametric gains sufficient to produce up to 25% average power conversion of the pump to the tunable visible output were obtained without the use of an external resonator. The output radiation typically had a 5A bandwidth, two nanosecond pulse duration, 100 kW peak power, and 5 mW average power at 30 pps. Wavelength tuning was accomplished either by varying the crystal temperature or its orientation with respect to the pump beam. Angle tuning allows the output to be rapidly tuned across the visible spectrum. (Author)

127. A FRESNEL DRAG LASER GYROSCOPE.

Abstract

The work is an evaluation of a technique for determining, with high sensitivity, the orientation of the spin axis of a transparent, unmarked spherical rotor. The method makes use of the Fresnel drag effect, whereby the rotation of the dielectric sphere produces a non-reciprocal phase shift on light refracted through the rotor. By placing the rotating sphere inside the cavity of a traveling-wave ring laser, this phase shift can be measured by detecting the frequency difference or beat between the laser oscillations traveling in opposite directions. In this study we have analyzed the basic operation of the device and have derived a figure of merit by which the most suitable laser transition for this application can be chosen. An optical resonator using a non-spherical concave mirror to compensate for astigmatism introduced by the off-center refraction of the laser modes through the sphere has been designed and operated. The various sources of error in measuring the cosine of the axis angle with this technique have been investigated in detail; these error sources include dispersion of the rotor and laser media, Langmuir flow of gas in the laser tube, and mode coupling by backscattering. The effect of departures from roundness and displacements of the rotor from its ideal position have been considered also.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to investigate techniques for extending the tuning range of optical parametric oscillators further into (a) the infrared and (b) the visible and ultraviolet. Two separate tasks are discussed. The first is an experimental and theoretical study of a proustite oscillator which is pumped by the 1.06 micron output of a Nd:YAG laser, and the second a study of an ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) oscillator which is pumped by the frequency-quadrupled output from a Nd:YAG laser. The report summarizes the results of work on these tasks. A proustite optical parametric oscillator has been designed, built, and successfully operated. The oscillator operates near degeneracy with signal and idler outputs near 2.13 microns. Also completed was the design of an oscillator which is pumped by the fourth harmonic of the 1.06 micron output from a Nd:YAG laser. ADP has been selected as the nonlinear material, and an optimum crystal orientation established. Calculations have been carried out on temperature-tuning of the oscillator, and of the pump power required to reach threshold. A unique oscillator resonator design has been devised which will eliminate the need for coatings which can withstand the substantial ultraviolet pump power densities involved. (Author)

Abstract

This first report describes work performed in an experimental and theoretical program for the stabilization of a laser local oscillator for use in an optical heterodyne receiver for the detection and demodulation of microwave modulated light. The work in the quarter was divided into three main phases. These are (1) the development of a single-sideband suppressed carrier laser local oscillator with maximum power, (2) control of the modes of a laser by interferometric means to assure monochromatic output, and (3) design of an automatic frequency control system to tune the laser LO in frequency in accordance with the changes in the carrier frequency of an incoming signal from an independent laser transmitter. A unique and efficient single-sideband suppressedcarrier modulator has been developed. This modulator is situated inside the laser cavity and couples out only that laser energy which has been shifted in frequency.

Abstract

As translation research moves towards investigating translation processes and not just products, researchers have begun to examine the effects of those processes on the quality of target texts. Translation products result from the interaction between expectations of what translations should be and those practices and competences by which translators produce acceptable translations within temporal and economic constraints. Translation process models suggest what cognitive decision processes might involve, and competence models outline the expert knowledge and cognitive components assumed necessary for effective translation work. In translator training, translation processes have traditionally been accessed and evaluated through student annotations and other written commentaries. Recently, however, other ways of including explicit input on the translation process have been proposed, including the transfer of process research techniques to understanding and evaluating undergraduate students' translation performance. This paper outlines how methods to investigate translation processes can profitably be applied to translator training. A pilot study conducted in our MA programme shows that making translation processes transparent provides trainers and students with valuable insights into translation behaviour. This transparency facilitates better needs-oriented coaching than product-oriented evaluations can, since many of the considerations in reaching translation solutions can be directly observed rather than assumed.

Abstract

The shift in interest from the product as the primary object of study in T&I (i.e., a focus on target texts and their relation to source texts) to the producer (i.e., a focus on cognitive processes) can be dated to the early 1980s. Holmes (1972/2004: 185) anticipated this shift by including process-oriented research in his much-cited map, placing it within the descriptive branch of translation studies and suggesting that this area might come to be known as “translation psychology or psycho-translation studies.” Since then, process research has become almost synonymous with cognitive approaches to T&I. Toury’s (1995, 2012; see also Chesterman 2013) distinction between translation acts, or cognitive processes, and events, or socially-situated processes, however, underscores the fact that cognitive processes are always embedded in a context. Perhaps more apparent in interpreting, which has long been identified as a socially-situated activity (e.g., Angelelli 2004; Berk Seligson 1990; Wadensjö 1998), the interaction between processes and contexts has developed into a vibrant area of research in T&I.
