Abstract

We perform a combined study of the two hadronic decays $D^+\to K^-π^+π^+$ and $D_s^+\to K^+K^+π^-$ using a detailed analysis of the semileptonic decays $D^+\to K^-π^+ \ell^+ν_\ell$ ($\ell=e, μ$) thanks to the high-statistics $D^+\to K^-π^+ e^+ν_e$ dataset provided by the BESIII Collaboration. We propose simple and suitable amplitude parametrizations of the studied reactions that shall be of interest to experimentalists for upcoming analyses. These new parametrizations are based on the naïve factorization hypothesis and the description of the resulting matrix elements in terms of well-known hadronic form factors, with special emphasis on the $Kπ$ scalar and vector cases. Such form factors account for final state interactions which fulfil analyticity, unitarity and chiral symmetry constraints. As a result of our study, we find a good prediction for the $P$-wave BR in $D^+\to K^-π^+π^+$ decays, while adopting a global phase and moderate rescaling for the $S$-wave, that we ascribe to three-body effects, we find a reasonable description. The resulting model is confronted against $D_s^+\to K^+K^+π^-$ decays, obtaining again a good agreement with data., 18 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Introduction: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (CVST-VITT) is a severe disease with high mortality. There are few data on sex differences in CVST-VITT. The aim of our study was to investigate the differences in presentation, treatment, clinical course, complications, and outcome of CVST-VITT between women and men.Patients and methods: We used data from an ongoing international registry on CVST-VITT. VITT was diagnosed according to the Pavord criteria. We compared the characteristics of CVST-VITT in women and men.Results: Of 133 patients with possible, probable, or definite CVST-VITT, 102 (77%) were women. Women were slightly younger [median age 42 (IQR 28–54) vs 45 (28–56)], presented more often with coma (26% vs 10%) and had a lower platelet count at presentation [median (IQR) 50x109/L (28–79) vs 68 (30–125)] than men. The nadir platelet count was lower in women [median (IQR) 34 (19–62) vs 53 (20–92)]. More women received endovascular treatment than men (15% vs 6%). Rates of treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins were similar (63% vs 66%), as were new venous thromboembolic events (14% vs 14%) and major bleeding complications (30% vs 20%). Rates of good functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale 0-2, 42% vs 45%) and in-hospital death (39% vs 41%) did not differ.Discussion and conclusions: Three quarters of CVST-VITT patients in this study were women. Women were more severely affected at presentation, but clinical course and outcome did not differ between women and men. VITT-specific treatments were overall similar, but more women received endovascular treatment.

The aim of this paper is to propose a basic model to analyse processes of change in educational institutions taking into account both individual and contextual variables. It aims to identify the basic factors of change in order to contribute to reduce the dispersion of research projects, both from close subjects and one subject alone within human sciences, in order to make scientific accumulation easier and to guide social practice better. This proposal is based on Cryer and Elton's ("Studies in Higher Education," 1: 75-86, 1990) contributions, in this case applied to the learning processes of university students. They may account for static and dynamic aspects. To prove its coherence, it has been statistically compared with the data of a survey carried out among university students in Catalonia (Spain).

We have tried to base the statements and analyses that are presented on empirical data obtained from our own research (Education and Labour Research Group--GRET). The motivation to write this document has been to try to add to the debate about the changes experienced by the university, in particular in regards to the curriculum, and to reflect on our experience as investigators in higher education. Abstract

In this paper we present a detailed study of the four-body decay B0 → K+π−ℓ+ℓ−, where tensions with the Standard Model predictions have been observed. Our analysis of the decay with P- and S-wave contributions to the K+π− system develops a complete understanding of the symmetries of the distribution, in the case of massless and massive leptons. In both cases, the symmetries determine relations between the observables in the B0 → K+π−ℓ+ℓ− decay distribution. This enables us to define the complete set of observables accessible to experiments, including several that have not previously been identified. The new observables arise when the decay rate is written differentially with respect to $$ {m}_{K_{\pi }} $$ m K π . We demonstrate that experiments will be able to fit this full decay distribution with currently available data sets and investigate the sensitivity to new physics scenarios given the experimental precision that is expected in the future.The symmetry relations provide a unique handle to explore the behaviour of S-wave observables by expressing them in terms of P-wave observables, therefore minimising the dependence on poorly-known S-wave form factors. Using this approach, we construct two theoretically optimized S-wave observables and explore their sensitivity to new physics. By further exploiting the symmetry relations, we obtain the first bounds on the S-wave observables using two different methods and highlight how these relations may be used as cross-checks of the experimental methodology and the parametrization of the B0 → K+π−ℓ+ℓ− differential decay rate. We identify a zero-crossing point that would be at a common dilepton invariant mass for a subset of P- and S-wave observables, and explore the information on new physics and hadronic effects that this zero point can provide.

Abstract

The $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ mesons are nearly unique in the particle universe since they are almost Goldstone bosons and the dynamics of their decays are strongly constrained. The integrated $\eta$-meson samples collected in earlier experiments amount to $\sim10^{9}$ events. A new experiment, REDTOP (Rare Eta Decays To Probe New Physics), is being proposed, with the intent of collecting a data sample of order 10$^{14}$ $\eta$ (10$^{12}$ $\eta^{\prime}$) for studying very rare decays. Such statistics are sufficient for investigating several symmetry violations, and for searching for particles and fields beyond the Standard Model. In this work we present several studies evaluating REDTOP sensitivity to processes that couple the Standard Model to New Physics through all four of the so-called \emph{portals}: the Vector, the Scalar, the Axion and the Heavy Lepton portal. The sensitivity of the experiment is also adequate for probing several conservation laws, in particular $CP$, $T$ and Lepton Universality, and for the determination of the $\eta$ form factors, which is crucial for the interpretation of the recent measurement of muon $g-2$.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE: The value of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) levels for predicting long-term disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether high sNfL values are associated with disability worsening in patients who underwent their first demyelinating MS event. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent their first demyelinating event suggestive of MS at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal (development cohort; June 1, 1994, to September 31, 2021, with follow-up until August 31, 2022) and 8 Spanish hospitals (validation cohort; October 1, 1995, to August 4, 2020, with follow-up until August 16, 2022). EXPOSURES: Clinical evaluations at least every 6 months. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The main outcomes were 6-month confirmed disability worsening (CDW) and an Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score of 3. Levels of sNfL were measured in blood samples obtained within 12 months after disease onset using a single molecule array kit. The cutoffs used were sNfL level of 10 pg/mL and a standardized score (z score) of 1.5. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 578 patients included in the study, 327 were in the development cohort (median age at sNfL analysis, 34.1 years [IQR, 27.2-42.7 years]; 226 female [69.1%]) and 251 patients were in the validation cohort (median age at sNfL analysis, 33.3 years [IQR, 27.4-41.5 years]; 184 female [73.3%]). The median follow-up was 7.10 years (IQR, 4.18-10.0 years). Levels of sNfL greater than 10 pg/mL were independently associated with higher risk of 6-month CDW and an EDSS of 3 in the development cohort (6-month CDW: hazard ratio [HR], 2.39; 95% CI, 1.39-4.12; P = .002; EDSS of 3: HR, 4.12; 95% CI, 2.18-7.77; P < .001) and the validation cohort (6-month CDW: HR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.07-2.42; P = .02; EDSS of 3: HR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.23-3.33; P = .005). Highly effective disease-modifying treatments were associated with lower risks of 6-month CDW and an EDSS of 3 in patients with high baseline sNfL values. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This cohort study found that high sNfL values obtained within the first year of disease were associated with long-term disability worsening in MS, suggesting that sNfL level measurement may help identify optimal candidates for highly effective disease-modifying treatments.

Abstract

El ictus agudo es una enfermedad con un pronostico tiempo dependiente, por lo que los protocolos de tratamiento diagnostico y terapeutico estan disenados para garantizar un acceso rapido y seguro de los pacientes con ictus agudo a sus cuidados especificos. El codigo ictus, la atencion precoz por neurologos expertos, el ingreso en unidades de ictus y la aplicacion precoz de tratamientos de reperfusion han demostrado reducir de forma considerable la mortalidad y las secuelas de los pacientes con ictus agudo. Esta cadena asistencial debe estar adecuadamente protocolizada para asegurar la accesibilidad y la equidad en el tratamiento de esta enfermedad. El estudio etiologico y la prevencion de complicaciones son tambien fundamentales para personalizar los cuidados hospitalarios y la prevencion secundaria de estos pacientes.

Abstract

El ictus isquémico se define como la disfunción de una región del sistema nervioso central como consecuencia de un cese de perfusión focal. Se puede subdividir en infarto cerebral o ataque isquémico transitorio (AIT) dependiendo de si la isquemia es de duración suficiente como para producir la necrosis del tejido. Según la clasificación etiológica del Grupo de Estudio de Enfermedades Cerebrovasculares de la Sociedad Española de Neurología, el ictus isquémico se subdivide en aterotrombótico, cardioembólico, lacunar, de causa inhabitual o de causa indeterminada, siendo diferente la estrategia en prevención secundaria de cada tipo. Realizar un correcto diagnóstico del infarto cerebral resulta fundamental para poder aplicar un tratamiento adecuado en la fase aguda, y así revertir los síntomas y mejorar el pronóstico funcional de los pacientes. Por otro lado, el estudio de la causa del ictus va a derivar en una mejoría en prevención secundaria, y debe ser lo más exhaustivo posible.

Abstract

Objective:To analyze the effectiveness and safety of rivaroxaban in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods:The clinical profile and outcomes of the EMIR study were indirectly compared with those of ROCKET-AF, eight other Spanish observational studies and XANTUS. Results:In EMIR, mean age was 74.2 years and CHA2DS2-VASc was 3.5. In the rivaroxaban arm of the ROCKET-AF trial, mean age was 73 years and CHADS2was 3.5, whereas in the Spanish studies mean age ranged from 74.9 years to 78.4 years and CHA2DS2-VASc from 3.5 to 4.3. In EMIR, rates of stroke/systemic embolism, major adverse cardiovascular events, cardiovascular death and major bleeding were 0.57, 1.07, 0.63 and 1.04 events/100 patient-years, respectively. In ROCKET-AF, these numbers were 1.7, 3.91, 1.53 and 3.6 events/100 patient-years, respectively. In the Spanish studies, rates of stroke and major bleeding were 0–1.8 and 0.22–4.2 events/100 patient-years, respectively. In XANTUS, rates of stroke, major adverse cardiovascular events and major bleeding were 0.7, 1.8 and 2.1 events/100 patient-years, respectively. Conclusion:Despite the fact that rivaroxaban is prescribed for elderly patients with a high thromboembolic risk, rates of outcomes remain low.

• A new smarphone application is able to measure the tapping speed passively from pwMS. • The measures obtained with this application are reliable, with some variability between different days. • Tapping speed, measured as both median and máximum keys/s, correlates with the baseline disability status. Continuously acquired smartphone keyboard interactions may be useful to monitor progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to study the correlation between tapping speed (TS), measured as keys/s, and baseline disability scales in patients with MS. Single-center prospective study in patients with MS. We passively assessed TS during first week, measured by an "in house" smartphone application. Reliability was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Correlations between median and maximum keys/s of first week of assessment and baseline disability measures were explored. One-hundred three patients were included: 62.1 % women, with a median (IQR) age of 47 (40.4–54.8) years-old and an EDSS score of 3.0 (2.0–4.0). Distribution by MS subtypes was: 77.7 % relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), 17.5 % secondary-progressive MS (SPMS) and 4.9 % primary-progressive MS (PPMS). ICC during first week was 0.714 (p < 0.00001). Both median and maximum keys/s showed a negative correlation with Expanded Disability Status Score, 9-hole peg test and timed 25-foot walk and a positive correlation with Processing Speed Test CogEval® raw and Z-score. Median and maximum keys/s were lower in patients diagnosed with SPMS than in RRMS. Both measures of tapping speed were associated with MS phenotype independently of age. The $\eta$ transition form factor is analysed for the first time in both space- and time-like regions at low and intermediate energies in a model-independent approach through the use of rational approximants. The $\eta\rightarrow e^+e^-\gamma$ experimental data provided by the A2 Collaboration in the very low energy region of the dilelectron invariant mass distribution allows for the extraction of the most precise up-to-date slope and curvature parameters of the form factors as well as their values at zero and infinity. Las complicaciones cardiovasculares son frecuentes en el paciente con la enfermedad coronavírica de 2019 (COVID-19), y se asocian con una mayor mortalidad. Entre las complicaciones cardiovasculares, destacan el síndrome coronario agudo, el daño miocárdico agudo (elevación de troponinas con coronarias normales), arritmias (principalmente fibrilación auricular y arritmias ventriculares), insuficiencia cardiaca, pericarditis/derrame pericárdico y complicaciones tromboembólicas (tromboembolia arterial y venosa, trombosis microvascular, embolia pulmonar, ictus). Por lo tanto, uno de los objetivos del tratamiento del paciente con COVID-19, sobre todo en sus formas más graves, es la prevención de las complicaciones cardiovasculares y trombóticas, lo que sin duda tendría un impacto positivo en el pronóstico de estos pacientes.

Abstract

La fibrilación auricular aumenta hasta en 5 veces el riesgo de ictus. Los ictus cardioembólicos habitualmente son más graves y tienen altas tasas de recurrencias y discapacidad permanente en comparación con los ictus de otras etiologías. En consecuencia, la reducción del riesgo de ictus mediante una adecuada anticoagulación es uno de los principales objetivos en el tratamiento de los pacientes con fibrilación auricular. Los antagonistas de la vitamina K han sido ampliamente superados por los anticoagulantes orales de acción directa, ya que tanto los resultados de los ensayos clínicos como los de los estudios de práctica clínica y, últimamente, estudios poblacionales han demostrado que los anticoagulantes orales de acción directa tienen mayores eficacia (menos ictus y muerte) y seguridad (menos hemorragias intracraneales) que los antagonistas de la vitamina K. Además, durante la pandemia de COVID-19, el empleo preferente de anticoagulantes orales de acción directa frente a los antagonistas de la vitamina K constituye una estrategia clave para garantizar una calidad óptima de la anticoagulación y una mejor protección del paciente contra el SARS-CoV-2, al no precisarse control de la razón internacional normalizada.

Abstract

The pseudoscalar decays into lepton pairs $P\rightarrow\overline{\ell}\ell$ are analyzed with the machinery of Canterbury approximants, an extension of Pad\'e approximants to bivariate functions. This framework provides an ideal model-independent approach to implement all our knowledge of the pseudoscalar transition form factors driving these decays, can be used for data analysis, and allows to include experimental data and theoretical constraints in an easy way, and determine a systematic error. We find that previous theoretical estimates for these branching ratios have underestimated their theoretical uncertainties. From our updated results, the existing experimental discrepancies for $\pi^0\rightarrow e^+e^-$ and $\eta\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ channels cannot be explained unless the doubly-virtual transition form factors behavior -not yet measured- are out of theoretical expectations, which is an interesting result both for anomalous magnetic moments of leptons, and for physics beyond the standard model., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

BackgroundThe clinical consequences and factors related to the progression from a carotid near-occlusion (CNO) to a complete occlusion are not well established. Our aim is to describe the rate, predictive factors and clinical implications of the progression to complete carotid occlusion (PCCO) in a population of patients with symptomatic CNO.MethodsWe conducted a multicenter, nationwide, prospective study from January 2010 to May 2016. Patients with angiography-confirmed CNO were included. We collected information on demographic data, clinical manifestations, radiological and hemodynamic findings, and treatment modalities. A 24 month carotid-imaging follow-up of the CNO was performed.Results141 patients were included in the study, and carotid-imaging follow-up was performed in 122 patients. PCCO occurred in 40 patients (32.8%), and was more frequent in medically-treated patients (34 out of 61; 55.7%) compared with patients treated with revascularization (6 out of 61; 9.8%) (p<0.001). 7 of the 40 patients with PCCO (17.5%) suffered ipsilateral symptoms. Factors independently related with PCCO in the multivariate analysis were: age ≥75 years (OR 2.93, 95% CI 1.05 to 8.13), revascularization (OR 0.07, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.20), and collateral circulation through the ipsilateral ophthalmic artery (OR 3.25, 95% CI 1.01 to 10.48).ConclusionsPCCO occurred within 24 months in more than half of the patients under medical treatment. Most episodes of PCCO were not associated with ipsilateral symptoms. Revascularization reduces the risk of PCCO.

148. Higher-order QCD corrections to hadronic τdecays from Padé approximants

Abstract

The mathematical method of Padé approximants is put forward to reconstruct the Borel transformed series of the Adler function and extract higher-order corrections in a model-independent way. The use of the D-log Padé approximants provides valuable information to its analytic structure and yields, together with the standard Padé approximants, reliable model-independent predictions of the higher-order coefficients, as for example, c5,1=277±51. Such reconstruction strongly favours the use of fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) for the renormalization-scale setting.

Abstract

The mini-proceedings of the Workshop on "Constraining the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment" which included the "13th meeting of the Radio MonteCarLow WG" and the "Satellite meeting R-Measurements at BES-III" held in Trento from April 10th to 12th, 2013, are presented. This collaboration meeting aims to bring together the experimental e+e- collider communities from BaBar, Belle, BESIII, CMD2, KLOE, and SND, with theorists working in the fields of meson transitions form factors, hadronic contributions to (g-2)_\mu and effective fine structure constant, and development of Monte Carlo generator and Radiative Corrections for precision e+e- and tau physics.
