Anomalous weak pinning phenomena were found in the vortex liquid state of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ single crystals with and without columnar defects up to B Φ = 1 T between H irr and H F , at which the M-T curves show a sharp step-like feature. With increasing B Φ H F as well as H irr is considerably pushed up. It is shown that the region defined by H irr and H F is very sensitive to the disorder and is greatly expanded by introducing columnar defects. These results strongly suggest appearance of the new phase in the vortex liquid region, which may be induced by the pinning effect.

A weak irreversible behavior was found in magnetization hysteresis curves in pristine as well as heavy-ion-irradiated Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals measured by a SQUID magnetometer both above the vortex lattice melting transition in lower fields and the vortex-glass transition in higher fields. The onset of this anomaly on magnetic field HF strongly depends on sample disorder level, and begins to appear in the middle of the first-order phase transition. HF systematically shifts to higher temperature and field region with increasing the number of columnar defects. The results are interpreted by a disorder-induced pinning, which is effective below HF and becomes ineffective above HF.

Coster-Kronig (C-K) electrons ejected through autoionization decay of high-Rydberg states in high-energy collisions of Nq+ (q = 1-3) and O q+ (q = 1,2) with He have been measured with high resolution by using zero-degree electron spectroscopy. Autoionizing lines are observed corresponding to decays from 1s22p(2P)nl Rydberg states for 21 MeV N3+ + He, from 1s22s2p(3P)nl Rydberg states for 21 MeV N2+ + He and from 1s22s2p2(4P)nl Rydberg states for 14 MeV N+ + He, respectively. Angular momentum distributions of these three series of C-K decaying Rydberg states for Nq+ (q = 1-3) projectiles are also discussed, where the highly excited states are formed by single-electron excitation. Similarly, series of the autoionizing Rydberg states are observed for two charge states of incident O ions. The C-K spectra observed can be assigned to decays from 1s22s2p2(4P)nl states for 30 MeV O2+ + He and from 1s22s2p3(5S)nl states for 15 MeV O+ + He.

The irradiation effect of high energy heavy ions in a foil has been investigated by secondary ions spectroscopy in the energy region where the electronic stopping power is dominant. We observed significant enhancement of the secondary ion yield above the threshold value of the electronic stopping power, where the irradiation effect in high Tc super conductors and metallic materials becomes remarkable.

The X-ray spectra emitted during the radiative capture of target electrons into the projectile K shell have been measured under single collision conditions for a He gas target. The experiment was performed for 40–76 MeV F q + ( q = 8,9) and 120–175 MeV Cl q + ( q = 16,17) ions. The centroid energies of the radiative electron capture (K-REC) X-rays have been found to be in good agreement with the calculated ones. It is also confirmed that the widths of the K-REC X-ray distributions for Cl 17+ ion impact are in good agreement with the simple model calculations.

Analytic formulas are given for the total cross sections, σ, for the charge transfer in collisions of H + , H − and H with metal vapors. The cross sections considered are σ 10 , σ 0−1 , σ 1−1 , σ 01 , σ −10 , and σ −11 , where the subscripts represent the initial and the final charge state of the projectile. The functional form of the formulas is a modification of the semiempirical formula proposed by Green and McNeal for σ 10 of H + in gaseous atoms and molecules. Values of adjustable parameters in the formulas have been determined by least-squares fits to a compiled set of experimental data. The root-mean-square deviation of the data from the formula is from 7 to 34% for each type of cross section. The main cause of larger deviations is the discrepancy among the data.

Charge states and angular distributions of 150 MeV Cl ions have been measured as a function of carbon target thickness (2.5–180 μg/cm 2 ). Evidence for the large shell effect under single collision conditions is found in the thinnest target. Transition energies in highly ionized Cl ions have been measured using a grazing incidence monochromator at the VUV region, and using a crystal spectrometer and a Doppler-tuned spectrometer at the X-ray region. The lifetimes have also been measured using the time of flight technique at the VUV and X-ray regions. Results of measurements are given and some are discussed in comparison with other data.

A Beam-foil study was made on highly ionized chlorine ions. Emission lines in the wavelength region from 170 A to 260 A were observed and most of the lines were due to the 2 s -2 p transitions belonging to Cl XII-Cl XIV. Two lines at ∼180 A and ∼206 A are newly identified as transitions between high n l levels of Cl XV and Cl XIV. The lifetimes of 2 s 2 p 1 P 1 and 2 p 2 1 D 2 levels in Cl XIV were determined from the intensity decay curve of 237.7 Aobtained with time-of-flight technique to be 0.14 nsec and 0.60 nsec, respectively.

Both charge states and scattering angles have been simultaneously measured using an electrostatic deflector and a two dimensional-position sensitive detector for 150-MeV 37Cl ions emerging from carbon foils of 2.5–360 μg/cm2. The increase of mean charges for foils of a few μg/cm2 is noticeable at larger scattering angles. Concerning charge distributions, marked variations are found for the shapes of distributions and distribution widths in the range of non-equilibrium to equilibrium thickness, and these show a weak dependence on the scattering angle.

Distributions of charge states and multiple scattering widths of angular distributions have been simultaneously measured using a two dimensional-position sensitive detector for 150 MeV 37Cl10+ ions emerging from carbon foils with thickness of 2.5–180 μg cm 2 . For thinner foils, the scattering angle dependence of mean charge states verifies the evidence for the so-called single violent and/or plural collisions

Charge-state dependence for low energy projectile autoionizing transitions from 2 MeV/u Sq+ (q = 6, 11 to 13) ions on He and C-foil targets was measured using a zero-degree electron spectrometer. A series of autoionization electrons produced by the Coster-Kronig transitions of 1s22p(2P3/2)9l-1s22sl' are identified in the electron energy range up to 2.5 eV for the S12+ + He collision. No characteristic lines are observed in the electron energy spectra following the S13+ ion beam excitation with He. This indicates that electron excitation and capture processes that could produce the Li- and Be-like initial configurations resulting in autoionizing Coster-Kronig transitions do not occur during collisions between S13+ ions and a He target at this collision energy. It is suggested that the electron spectra for the S11+ projectiles show a series of autoionizing Coster-Kronig transitions of 1s22p27l-1s22s2pl', 1s22p29l-1s22s2pl' and 1s22s2p9l-1s22s2l' for S11+ ions, in addition to 1s22p(2P3/2)9l-1s22sl' transitions for S12+ ions.

Coster-Kronig electrons from the autoionizing Rydberg states of 2 MeV/u silicon projectiles excited through a thin carbon foil were observed at zero degrees. The most prominent lines came from Si10+ 1s22p(2P°1/2) nl-1s22sl' and 1s22p(2P°3/2) nl-1s22sl' transitions, with n ranging from 9 to ~20. Other peaks and shoulders in the spectra were examined.

Zero-degree electron spectra were measured with high resolution for 2 MeV/uSiq+ andSiq+ ions on a C-foil target. The most prominent lines were attributed as Si10+1s22p(2P1/2)nl-1s22sel′ and1s2p(2P3/2)nl-1s22sel′ transitions forSiq+ + C collisions, where then appears from 9 to 20. ForSq+ + C collisions, it was also found that the prominent lines came from S12+1s22P(2P1/2)nl = 1s22sel′ (n=10–20) and1s22p(2P3/2)nl−11s22sel′ (n = 9–20) transitions. The angular momentum (l) distributions of S12+ ions in the auto-inonizing states ofn = 9 were measured and evidence of highl enhancement was found in the C-foil target. The high Rydberg Coster-Kronig transition energies were compared with the theoretical calculations.

We have examined, by a computer simulation, an on-line measurement of diffusion coefficients by using a short-lived alpha particle emitter, 8Li (half life of 0.84 s), as a radiotracer. The energy spectra of alpha particles emitted from diffusing 8Li primarily implanted in the sample of LiAl are simulated as a measure of the diffusion of 8Li in the sample. As a possible time sequence for the measurement, a time cycle of 6 s, i.e. the implantation of 8Li for 1.5 s and subsequent diffusion for 4.5 s, is supposed. The sample is primarily set on a given temperature for the measurement. The time-dependent yields of alpha particles during the time cycle reveal the possibility to measure the diffusion coefficient with an accuracy of 10% if larger than 1×10-9 cm2/s, by the comparison with the experimental spectra measured at the temperature, i.e. at a certain diffusion coefficient.
