Abstract

In the OPERA experiment, so-called Scan Back method is used to locate neutrino interaction vertices in the emulsion target named ECC (Emulsion Cloud Chamber). In Scan Back method, tracks detected in the most downstream emulsion plate in ECCs are followed to upstream plate by plate until it reaches to the interaction points. In order to treat a number of neutrino interactions recorded in OPERA, dedicated systems called Plate Changer has been developed and utilized to neutrino event location in Japan. The details of the system have been described in this report. Until the end of November 2012, 6223 Scan Back trials have been performed using this system, and strongly contributed to the detection of tau neutrino appearance.

Abstract

NETSCAN is a track reconstruction algorithm used in Emulsion Cloud Chambers (ECC). NETSCAN and Emulsion Cloud Chambers were used in the DONUT experiment to detect Tau-neutrinos interactions. The algorithm has been revised in order to cope with the OPERA event analysis performed in Japan. A new version of NETSCAN was necessary to effectively analyze the most massive emulsion experiment in history with limited resources.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the vμ→ v τ channel, the v τ signature being the identification of the τ -lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first v τ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008-2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment, designed to search for neutrino oscillations, started its physics run in July 2008. It is the most recent emulsion-counter hybrid experiment. In this experiment two different types of emulsion detectors are used. One is called Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC), and is used as a target. The other is called Changeable Sheet (CS), which is attached to the downstream side of each ECC to identify the ECC in which a tagged neutrino interaction occurred. The CS interfaces rough tracking information obtained in the electronic detectors to the ECC and therefore is a key element of the emulsion-counter hybrid experiment. As a first step, a CS selected by electronic detectors is scanned and analyzed to decide if the ECC is to be developed and analyzed in detail; a few CS are usually to be analyzed to identify an ECC for each tagged event due to the inaccuracy of the electronic detectors. The CS has a large scanning area and therefore Japan and Europe (Gran Sasso) are sharing in the CS analysis load to handle the scanning job. In this paper, the CS analysis method developed for the Japan scanning facility is described in detail. 100 million tracks are read out on each CS by an automatic emulsion read-out system ( S-UTS ), most of them are so-called fake tracks mainly due to low momentum Compton electrons or random noise and a few real tracks from a tagged neutrino interaction have to be picked up among a huge background. A dedicated method to reject this background without losing real tracks has been developed on the basis of analyzing track data obtained by S-UTS and combining these data with a final selection using additional information on multiple Coulomb scattering of candidate tracks obtained by human eye check to eliminate a remaining background. Performance of this method is shown to be sufficient for the OPERA experiment.

Abstract

The DONuT experiment collected data in 1997 and published first results in 2000 based on four observed ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ charged-current (CC) interactions. The final analysis of the data collected in the experiment is presented in this paper, based on $3.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{17}$ protons on target using the 800 GeV Tevatron beam at Fermilab. The number of observed ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ CC events is 9 with an estimated background of 1.5 events, from a total of 578 observed neutrino interactions. We calculate the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ CC cross section as a function of one parameter. Assuming ${\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ mesons are the sole source for ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$, the energy-independent part of the total CC cross section can be parametrized as ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\mathrm{const}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})=2.51{n}^{1.52}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}40}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for $n\ensuremath{\ge}4$, where $n$ is the parameter controlling the longitudinal part of the ${\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ differential cross section of the form $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/d{x}_{F}\ensuremath{\propto}(1\ensuremath{-}|{x}_{F}|{)}^{n}$. The analysis could not distinguish between ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ and ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$. The value of $n$ obtained from Pythia simulations, $n=6.1$, gives an estimated value of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\mathrm{const}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})=(0.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}38}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

Abstract

Glassy carbon electrodes polished with some ceramics particles(TiB2 SiC and TiC) show activation for the oxidation and reduction of catechol and hydroquinone. The activation was found to depend on the hardness of glassy carbon and ceramic particles.

Abstract

The polarography of several aliphatic polyamine complexes of Pb(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II), and the anodic stripping polarography of polyamine complexes of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) were studied. The aliphatic polyamines used were ethylenediamine(en), 1,3-propanediamine(1,3-pn), 1,2-propanediamine(1,2-pn), diethylenetriamine(den), and triethylenetetramine(trien). These lead(II) complexes gave a one-step reversible wave which was diffusion-controlled. The relation between the logarithm of the concentration of polyamine and the halfwave potential of the Pb(II) complex was straight, so that one species of complex ion was found to be predominant in the bulk of solution. The ionic species in the bulk of solution were found to be Pb(en)22+, Pb(1,3-pn)22+, Pb(1,2-pn)22+, Pb(den)22+, and Pb(trien)2+. The stability constants of these complexes were calculated and were found to increase in the order of Pb(1,3-pn)22+

Abstract

The effect of preoxidation of two highly caking coals in the temperature range 120–250 °C on weight loss during pyrolysis in a N2 atmosphere up to 1000 °C and reactivity of the resultant chars in 0.1 MPa air at 470 °C has been investigated. Preoxidation markedly enhances char reactivity (by a factor of up to 40); the effect on char reactivity is more pronounced for lower levels of preoxidation. For a given level of preoxidation, the oxidation temperature and the presence of water vapour in the air used during preoxidation have essentially no effect on weight loss during pyrolysis and char reactivity. An increase in particle size of the caking coals reduces the rate of preoxidation as well as subsequent char reactivity. Preoxidation of caking coals sharply increases the surface area of the chars produced. Compared to heat treatment in a N2 atmosphere, pyrolysis in H2 of either the as-received or preoxidized coal results in a further increase in weight loss and a decrease in subsequent char reactivity.

Abstract

The application of anodic potential-step stripping voltammetry for the determination of metal ion was investigated. From the dependence of stripping current (ia,d) on electrode radius, the rotational speed of the stirring rod in electrodeposition and electrodeposition time for Cd(II) in 1 M KCl, the diffusion-controlled process could be theoretically predicted. The calibration curves of Cd(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Sb(III) were found to be linear in the range 0.01–0.1 ppm, and those of Tl(I), Cu(II), Pb(II), Sn(II), Bi(III), and In(III) in the range 0.02–0.2 ppm, by analysis at time t=1.25 sec on current-time curves. 滲出液の性質を鑑別することは各種の検査方法を用いても必ずしも容易でない.胸水あるいは腹水に健康人O型赤血球を浮遊沈降させると,結核性液では赤血球が大きな集塊を作つて速やかに沈降するが,癌性液その他の原因による貯留液では集塊を作ることなく緩やかに沈降するという事実に基づき,赤血球の凝集と赤血球表面荷電は密接に関係すると思われるので,表面荷電を直接反映する赤血球電気泳動速度を測定した.結核性胸水では赤血球易動度が低下し,癌性胸水では赤血球易動度が上昇し,結核性胸水と癌性胸水は泳動速度に相反する影響を及ぼすことを知つた.また,癌血清は赤血球泳動速度を著明に低下せしめ,なかんずく,肺癌患者血清ではばらつきが少ないことが認められた.

第二水銀イオンの溶出波を用いるく形波ポーラログラフィーによるイオウイオンの定量法について検討した.イオウイオンの波が,支持電解質として用いる市販特級の水酸化ナトリウム中に不純物として含まれているPb2+の波と重なることがわかった.この両者の波は,0.09Mエチレンジアミンテトラ酢酸四ナトリウム塩を添加することにより分離できた.1M水酸化ナトリウム,0.09Mエチレンジアミンテトラ酢酸四ナトリウム塩の支持電解質中で,頂点電位が-0.610V vs. Hg plooloをもつ頂点電流を用いて,イオウイオンの濃度1×10-6M~1×10-5M,1×10-5M~1×10-4Mで,検量線を求めることができた.SO42-,SO32-,S2O32-,SCN-,I-,Br-,Cl-などの陰イオンがイオウイオンに対して100倍以上も含まれていても妨害しない.くりかえしの誤差はおよそ±3%であった.

Abstract

We take some technical considerations in mikroelectrophoresis for cells. Details of construction of a mikroelectrophoretic apparatus, suitable for study of living cells, are given. The problem of measuring mobility is discussed. Electrophoretic mobility of the red blood cells of healthy persons in various buffer solution are presented.

Abstract

The polarography of several aliphatic polyamine complexes of Pb(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II), and the anodic stripping polarography of polyamine complexes of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) were studied. The aliphatic polyamines used were ethylenediamine(en), 1,3-propanediamine(1,3-pn), 1,2-propanediamine(1,2-pn), diethylenetriamine(den), and triethylenetetramine(trien). These lead(II) complexes gave a one-step reversible wave which was diffusion-controlled. The relation between the logarithm of the concentration of polyamine and the halfwave potential of the Pb(II) complex was straight, so that one species of complex ion was found to be predominant in the bulk of solution. The ionic species in the bulk of solution were found to be Pb(en)22+, Pb(1,3-pn)22+, Pb(1,2-pn)22+, Pb(den)22+, and Pb(trien)2+. The stability constants of these complexes were calculated and were found to increase in the order of Pb(1,3-pn)22+

Abstract

The application of anodic potential-step stripping voltammetry for the determination of metal ion was investigated. From the dependence of stripping current (ia,d) on electrode radius, the rotational speed of the stirring rod in electrodeposition and electrodeposition time for Cd(II) in 1 M KCl, the diffusion-controlled process could be theoretically predicted. The calibration curves of Cd(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Sb(III) were found to be linear in the range 0.01–0.1 ppm, and those of Tl(I), Cu(II), Pb(II), Sn(II), Bi(III), and In(III) in the range 0.02–0.2 ppm, by analysis at time t=1.25 sec on current-time curves. Abstract

Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV. The data are compared with the theoretical model based on the QCD Z-gluon fusion mechanism. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) are hypothetical particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model. These particles can, among other things, explain the origin of neutrino masses, generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and provide a dark matter candidate. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for HNLs produced in decays of heavy mesons and travelling distances ranging between $\mathcal{O}(50\text{ m})$ and tens of kilometers before decaying. We present the sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to a number of HNL's benchmark models and provide a way to calculate the SHiP's sensitivity to HNLs for arbitrary patterns of flavour mixings. Abstract

Samples of (Pb0.97, La0.03)(Zr0.52, Ti0.48)1-0.03/4O3 (PLZT) ceramics with and without an A-site deficient composition of 1 mol% in ABO3 perovskite structures have been prepared by sintering at 1200°C for 2 h to investigate the photovoltaic response upon UV illumination, as well as the ferroelectric and piezoelectric parameters such as the polarization-electric field (P–E) hysteresis curve, strain constant, and dielectric constant. Results confirmed that the A-site deficient composition generates a photovoltaic current twofold higher than that in the sample without the deficient composition. In the ferroelectric and piezoelectric parameters, no significant difference was measured between the two samples. These results indicate that the photostrictor response is mostly determined by the photovoltaic properties and that the overall response speed of photostriction can be markedly improved by enhanced photovoltaic current.

Abstract

Dark matter is a well-established theoretical addition to the Standard Model supported by many observations in modern astrophysics and cosmology. In this context, the existence of weakly interacting massive particles represents an appealing solution to the observed thermal relic in the Universe. Indeed, a large experimental campaign is ongoing for the detection of such particles in the sub-GeV mass range. Adopting the benchmark scenario for light dark matter particles produced in the decay of a dark photon, with $\alpha_D=0.1$ and $m_{A'}=3m_{\chi}$, we study the potential of the SHiP experiment to detect such elusive particles through its Scattering and Neutrino detector (SND). In its 5-years run, corresponding to $2\cdot 10^{20}$ protons on target from the CERN SPS, we find that SHiP will improve the current limits in the mass range for the dark matter from about 1 MeV to 300 MeV. In particular, we show that SHiP will probe the thermal target for Majorana candidates in most of this mass window and even reach the Pseudo-Dirac thermal relic., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. v2: extended version as published on JHEP

Abstract

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B > 1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. Abstract

This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400~GeV$/c$ SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400~GeV$/c$ proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of $\mathcal{O}(10^6)$. To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented. Abstract

Glassy carbon electrode polished with ceramics particles (TiB2, SiC, and TiC) showed higher oxidation rate of ascorbic acid. The activation seems to depend on hardness of glassy carbon and ceramics particles and to be influenced by fresh edges formed on glassy carbon surface.
