Context:Quasars radiating at extreme Eddington ratios (xA) are likely a prime mover of galactic evolution and have been hailed as potential distance indicators. Their properties are still scarcely known. Aims:We test the effectiveness of the selection criteria defined on the 4D Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) for identifying xA sources. We provide a quantitative description of their UV spectra in the redshift range 20.5 and CIII]1909/SiIII]1892<1. The emission line spectra was studied using multicomponent fits of deep spectroscopic observations obtained with the OSIRIS-GTC. Results:Spectra confirm that almost all of these quasars are xA sources with very similar properties. We provide spectrophotometric and line profile measurements for the SiIV1397+OIV]1402, CIV1549+HeII1640, and the 1900A blend composed by AlIII1860, SiIII]1892, FeIII and a weak CIII]1909. The spectra can be characterized as very low ionization (logU~-3), a condition that explains the significant FeIII emission. In the next 30 years, a new generation of space and ground-based telescopes will permit to obtain multi-frequency observations of faint sources and, for the first time in human history, to achieve a deep, almost synoptical monitoring of the whole sky. Gravitational wave observatories will detect a Universe of unseen black holes in the merging process over a broad spectrum of mass. Computing facilities will permit new high-resolution simulations with a deeper physical analysis of the main phenomena occurring at different scales. Given these development lines, we first sketch a panorama of the main instrumental developments expected in the next thirty years, dealing not only with electromagnetic radiation, but also from a multi-messenger perspective that includes gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays. We then present how the new instrumentation will make it possible to foster advances in our present understanding of galaxies and quasars. Narrow-line Seyfert 1s (NLSy1s) are an ill-defined class. Work done over the past 20 years as well as recent analyses show a continuity in properties (e.g., Balmer line profiles, blueshifts of high-ionization lines) between sources with FWHM above and below 2000 km/s, the defining boundary of NLSy1s. This finding alone suggests that comparisons between samples of NLSy1s and rest of broad-line AGNs are most likely biased. NLSy1s can be properly contextualized by their location on the quasar main sequence originally defined by Sulentic et al 2000. At one end, NLSy1s encompass sources with strong FeII emission and associated with high Eddington ratio that hold the promise of becoming useful distance indicators; at the other end, at least some of them are sources with broad profiles seen face-on. Any rigid FWHM limit gives rise to some physical ambiguity, as the FWHM of low-ionization lines depends in a complex way on mass, Eddington ratio, orientation, and luminosity. In addition, if the scaling derived from luminosity and virial dynamics applies to the broad line regions, NLSy1s at luminosity higher than 1E47 erg/s become physically impossible. Therefore, in a broader context, a proper subdivision of two distinct classes of AGNs and quasars may be achieved by the distinction between Pop. Here we investigate the connection of broad emission line shapes and continuum light curve variability time scales of type-1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We developed a new model to describe optical broad emission lines as an accretion disk model of a line profile with additional ring emission. We connect ring radii with orbital time scales derived from optical light curves, and using Kepler's third law, we calculate mass of central supermassive black hole (SMBH). The obtained results for central black hole masses are in a good agreement with {other methods. This indicates that the variability time scales of AGN may not be stochastic, but rather connected to the orbital time scales which depend on the central SMBH mass., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, Accepted on 11 May 2018 Front. The last 25 years saw a major step forward in the analysis of optical and UV spectroscopic data of large quasar samples. Multivariate statistical approaches have led to the definition of systematic trends in observational properties that are the basis of physical and dynamical modeling of quasar structure. We discuss the empirical correlates of the so-called "main sequence" associated with the quasar Eigenvector 1, its governing physical parameters and several implications on our view of the quasar structure, as well as some luminosity effects associated with the virialized component of the line emitting regions. We also briefly discuss quasars in a segment of the main sequence that includes the strongest FeII emitters. Many active galactic nuclei (AGN) show strong variability of the optical continuum. Since the line flux, profile shapes and intensity ratios are changing, we analyze the variability patterns and possible periodicity of Type 1 AGN NGC 5548, using the Eigenvector 1 (EV1) diagram in different variability states, taking advantage of very long term monitoring campaign data. The preliminary results suggest that NGC 5548 - a highly variable object that over several decades has shown large amplitude continuum fluctuations and flaring behavior - remains Pop B. This means that the range in Eddington ratio, even when the source is in a bright state, remains consistent with the value of the low accreting Pop B. We inspected EV 1 parameters of a single object though long term monitoring, assuming an inclination and black hole mass to be constant during the observational time. Our results imply that the main driver for the variations along the EV 1 diagram could be dimensionless accretion rate. If so, then it appears that the source never crossed the boundary for structural changes, indicatively placed at $L/L_{Edd} \sim$ 0.2., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Science

We present a multiwavelength spectral study of the quasar HE0359-3959, which has been identified as an extreme radiating source at intermediate redshift (z=1.5209). Along the spectral range, the different ionic species give information about the substructures in the broad line region. The presence of a powerful outflow with an extreme blueshifted velocity of $\sim$-6000$\pm$500 km s$^{-1}$ is shown in the CIV{\lambda}1549 emission line. A prominent blueshifted component is also associated with the 1900{\AA} blend, resembling the one observed in CIV{\lambda}1549. We detect a strong contribution of very the low-ionization lines, FeII and Near-Infrared CaII triplet. We find that the physical conditions for the low, intermediate and high-ionization emission lines are different, which indicate that the emission lines are emitted in different zones of the broad line region. The asymmetries shown by the profiles reveal different forces over emitter zones. The high-ionization region is strongly dominated by radiation forces, which also affect the low and intermediate-ionization emitter region, commonly governed by virial motions. Phylogenetic approaches have proven to be useful in astrophysics. We have recently published a Maximum Parsimony (or cladistics) analysis on two samples of 215 and 85 low-z quasars (z < 0.7) which offer a satisfactory coverage of the Eigenvector 1-derived main sequence. Cladistics is not only able to group sources radiating at higher Eddington ratios, to separate radio-quiet (RQ) and radio-loud (RL) quasars and properly distinguishes core-dominated and lobe-dominated quasars, but it suggests a black hole mass threshold for powerful radio emission as already proposed elsewhere. An interesting interpretation from this work is that the phylogeny of quasars may be represented by the ontogeny of their central black hole, i.e. the increase of the black hole mass. However these exciting results are based on a small sample of low-z quasars, so that the work must be extended. We are here faced with two difficulties. The first one is the current lack of a larger sample with similar observables. The second one is the prohibitive computation time to perform a cladistic analysis on more that about one thousand objects. We show in this paper an experimental strategy on about 1500 galaxies to get around this difficulty. Even if it not related to the quasar study, it is interesting by itself and opens new pathways to generalize the quasar findings.

The most luminous quasars (with bolometric luminosities are 1E47 erg/s) show a high prevalence of CIV {\lambda}1549 and [OIII]{\lambda}{\lambda}4959,5007 emission line profiles with strong blueshifts. Blueshifts are interpreted as due to Doppler effect and selective obscuration, and indicate outflows occurring over a wide range of spatial scales. We found evidence in favor of the nuclear origin of the outflows diagnosed by [OIII]{\lambda}{\lambda} 4959,5007. The ionized gas mass, kinetic power, and mechanical thrust are extremely high, and suggest widespread feedback effects on the host galaxies of very luminous quasars, at cosmic epochs between 2 and 6 Gyr from the Big Bang. Broad emission lines in quasars enable us to "resolve" structure and kinematics of the broad line emitting region (BLR) thought to in- volve an accretion disk feeding a supermassive black hole. Interpretation of broad line measures within the 4DE1 formalism simplifies the apparent confusion among such data by contrasting and unifying properties of so-called high and low accreting Population A and B sources. H{\beta} serves as an estimator of black hole mass, Eddington ratio and source rest frame, the latter a valuable input for Civ{\lambda}1549 studies which allow us to isolate the blueshifted wind component. Optical and HST-UV spectra yield H{\beta} and Civ{\lambda}1549 spectra for low-luminosity sources while VLT-ISAAC and FORS and TNG-LRS provide spectra for high Luminosity sources. New high S/N data for Civ in high-luminosity quasars are presented here for comparison with the other previously published data. Comparison of H{\beta} and Civ{\lambda}1549 profile widths/shifts indicates that much of the emission from the two lines arise in regions with different structure and kinematics. Covering a wide range of luminosity and redshift shows evidence for a correlation between Civ{\lambda}1549 blueshift and source Eddington ratio, with a weaker trend with source luminosity (similar amplitude outflows are seen over 4 of the 5 dex luminosity range in our combined samples). At low luminosity (z < 0.7) only Population A sources show evidence for a significant outflow while at high luminosity the outflow signature begins to appear in Population B quasars as well., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Here we present the evidence for periodicity of an optical emission detected in several AGN. Significant periodicity is found in light curves and radial velocity curves. We discuss possible mechanisms that could produce such periodic variability and their implications. The connection between multifrequency quasar observational and physical parameters related to accretion processes is still open to debate. In the last 20 year, Eigenvector 1-based approaches developed since the early papers by Boroson and Green (1992) and Sulentic et al. (2000b) have been proven to be a remarkably powerful tool to investigate this issue, and have led to the definition of a quasar "main sequence". In this paper we perform a cladistic analysis on two samples of 215 and 85 low-z quasars (z 0.7) which were studied in several previous works and which offer a satisfactory coverage of the Eigenvector 1-derived main sequence. The data encompass accurate measurements of observational parameters which represent key aspects associated with the structural diversity of quasars. Cladistics is able to group sources radiating at higher Eddington ratios, as well as to separate radio-quiet (RQ) and radio-loud (RL) quasars. The analysis suggests a black hole mass threshold for powerful radio emission and also properly distinguishes core-dominated and lobe-dominated quasars, in accordance with the basic tenet of RL unification schemes. Considering that black hole mass provides a sort of "arrow of time" of nuclear activity, a phylogenetic interpretation becomes possible if cladistic trees are rooted on black hole mass: the ontogeny of black holes is represented by their monotonic increase in mass. More massive radio-quiet Population B sources at low-z become a more evolved counterpart of Population A i.e., wind dominated sources to which the "local" Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s belong.

We present the analysis of the emission line galaxies members of 46 low redshift (0.04 < z < 0.07) clusters observed by WINGS (WIde-field Nearby Galaxy cluster Survey, Fasano et al. 2006). Emission line galaxies were identified following criteria that are meant to minimize biases against non-star forming galaxies and classified employing diagnostic diagrams. We have examined the emission line properties and frequencies of star forming galaxies, transition objects and active galactic nuclei (AGNs: LINERs and Seyferts), unclassified galaxies with emission lines, and quiescent galaxies with no detectable line emission. A deficit of emission line galaxies in the cluster environment is indicated by both a lower frequency with respect to control samples, and by a systematically lower Balmer emission line equivalent width and luminosity (up to one order of magnitude in equivalent width with respect to control samples for transition objects) that implies a lower amount of ionised gas per unit mass and a lower star formation rate if the source is classified as Hii region. A sizable population of transition objects and of low-luminosity LINERs (approx. 10 - 20% of all emission line galaxies) is detected among WINGS cluster galaxies. With respect to Hii sources they are a factor of approx. 1.5 more frequent than (or at least as frequent as) in control samples. Transition objects and LINERs in cluster are most affected in terms of line equivalent width by the environment and appear predominantly consistent with "retired" galaxies. Shock heating can be a possible gas excitation mechanism able to account for observed line ratios. Specific to the cluster environment, we suggest interaction between atomic and molecular gas and the intracluster medium as a possible physical cause of line-emitting shocks., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics, accepted

The aim of this work is to show that the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation for early-type galaxies (ETGs) can be traced back to the existence of a fine-tuning between the average star formation rate $$ of galaxies and their structural and dynamical characteristics. To get such result it is necessary to imagine the existence of two distinct "virtual planes" for each galaxy in the $\log(R_e)-\log(I_e)-\log(\sigma)$ space. The first one (named Virial Plane VP) represents the total galaxy mass using the scalar Virial Theorem and the mass-to-light ratio $M/L$, while the second plane comes from an expression of the total galaxy luminosity as a function of the mean star formation rate $$ and the velocity dispersion $\sigma$, through a relation $L=L'_0 \sigma^{-2}$ (named here pseudo-Faber-Jackson (PFJ)) which is a mathematical convenient way for expressing the independency of light from the virial equilibrium. Its validity can be connected to the mutual correlation $L\sim\sigma\sqrt{}$ observed for all ETGs. A posteriori it is possible to see that this approach permits to explain the observed properties of the FP (tilt and scatter) and the Zone of Exclusions (ZOE) visible in the FP projections. Furthermore, the link between the properties of the FP and the SFR of galaxies provides a new idea of the star formation, as a phenomenon driven by the initial conditions of proto-galaxies and regulated across the whole cosmic history by the variation of the main galaxy parameters (mass, luminosity, structural shape and velocity dispersion)., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

We study the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) variability (rest frame wavelengths 500 - 920 $\AA$) of high luminosity quasars using HST (low to intermediate redshift sample) and SDSS (high redshift sample) archives. The combined HST and SDSS data indicates a much more pronounced variability when the sampling time between observations in the quasar rest frame is $> 2\times 10^{7}$ sec compared to $< 1.5\times 10^{7}$ sec. Based on an excess variance analysis, for time intervals $< 2\times 10^{7}$ sec in the quasar rest frame, $10\%$ of the quasars (4/40) show evidence of EUV variability. Similarly, for time intervals $>2\times 10^{7}$ sec in the quasar rest frame, $55\%$ of the quasars (21/38) show evidence of EUV variability. The propensity for variability does not show any statistically significant change between $2.5\times 10^{7}$ sec and $3.16\times 10^{7}$ sec (1 yr). The temporal behavior is one of a threshold time interval for significant variability as opposed to a gradual increase on these time scales. A threshold time scale can indicate a characteristic spatial dimension of the EUV region. We explore this concept in the context of the slim disk models of accretion. We find that for rapidly spinning black holes, the radial infall time to the plunge region of the optically thin surface layer of the slim disk that is responsible for the preponderance of the EUV flux emission (primarily within 0 - 7 black hole radii from the inner edge of the disk) is consistent with the empirically determined variability time scale., Comment: To appear in ApJ

The nature of dark energy, driving the accelerated expansion of the Universe, is one of the most important issues in modern astrophysics. In order to understand this phenomenon, we need precise astrophysical probes of the universal expansion spanning wide redshift ranges. Quasars have recently emerged as such a probe, thanks to their high intrinsic luminosities and, most importantly, our ability to measure their luminosity distances independently of redshifts. Here we report our ongoing work on observational reverberation mapping using the time delay of the Mg II line, performed with the South African Large Telescope (SALT)., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, submitted as PTA proceedings

We present an analysis of 43 years (1972 to 2015) of spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. This includes 12 years of new unpublished observations (2003 to 2015). We compiled about 1600 H$\beta$ spectra and analyzed the long-term spectral variations of the 5100 \AA\ continuum and the H$\beta$ line. Our analysis is based on standard procedures including the Lomb-Scargle method, which is known to be rather limited to such heterogeneous data sets, and new method developed specifically for this project that is more robust and reveals a $\sim$5700 day periodicity in the continuum light curve, the H$\beta$ light curve and the radial velocity curve of the red wing of the H$\beta$ line. The data are consistent with orbital motion inside the broad emission line region of the source. We discuss several possible mechanisms that can explain this periodicity, including orbiting dusty and dust-free clouds, a binary black hole system, tidal disruption events, and the effect of an orbiting star periodically passing through an accretion disc., Comment: Accepted in ApJS, 64 pages, 10 figures and 4 tables

This paper reports on the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of three low redshift ($z \sim 0.6$) radio loud quasars, 3C 95, 3C 57 and PKS 0405-123. The spectra were obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. The bolometric thermal emission, $L_{bol}$, associated with the accretion flow is a large fraction of the Eddington limit for all of these sources. We estimate the long term time averaged jet power, $\overline{Q}$, for the three sources. $\overline{Q}/L_{bol}$, is shown to lie along the correlation of $\overline{Q}/L_{bol}$ and $\alpha_{EUV}$ found in previous studies of the EUV continuum of intermediate and high redshift quasars, where the EUV continuum flux density between 1100 \AA\, and 700 \AA\, is defined by $F_{\nu} \sim \nu^{-\alpha_{EUV}}$. The high Eddington ratios of the three quasars extends the analysis into a wider parameter space. Selecting quasars with high Eddington ratios has accentuated the statistical significance of the partial correlation analysis of the data. Namely. the correlation of $\overline{Q}/L_{\mathrm{bol}}$ and $\alpha_{EUV}$ is fundamental and the correlation of $\overline{Q}$ and $\alpha_{EUV}$ is spurious at a very high statistical significance level (99.8\%). This supports the regulating role of ram pressure of the accretion flow in magnetically arrested accretion models of jet production. In the process of this study, we use multi-frequency and multi-resolution Very Large Array radio observations to determine that one of the bipolar jets in 3C 57 is likely frustrated by galactic gas that keeps the jet from propagating outside the host galaxy., Comment: To appear in MNRAS

The detection of gravitationally redshifted optical emission lines has been reported just for a few active galaxies. In this paper we give a short overview of studies that analyzed or exploited the detection of the gravitational redshift in optical AGN spectra. In addition, we tested the consistency of gravitational redshift as the physical origin of the redward shifts observed in their spectra using a sample of $\approx$ 50 Hamburg-ESO intermediate to high redshift quasars that are among the most luminous quasars known ($10^{47} \lesssim L \lesssim 10^{48}$ erg/s), and are expected to host very massive black holes. The Mg II emission line is visible in the optical band for intermediate redshift quasars (0.4 < z < 1.6) and it is thus an extremely important tool to measure the black hole mass and to understand the structure of the Broad Line Region. We aim to determine the substructure and the variability of the Mg II line with the aim to identify which part of the line comes from a medium in Keplerian motion. Using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) with the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) we performed ten spectroscopic observations of quasar HE 0435-4312 (z = 1.2231) over a period of three years (Dec 23/24, 2012 to Dec 7/8, 2015). Both the Mg II line and the Fe II pseudo-continuum increase with time. We clearly detect the systematic shift of the Mg II line with respect to the Fe II over the years, corresponding to the acceleration of 104 pm 14 km/s/year in the quasar rest frame. The Mg II line shape is clearly non-Gaussian but single-component, and the increase in line equivalent width and line shift is not accompanied with significant evolution of the line shape. We analyse the conditions in the Mg II and Fe II formation region and we note that the very large difference in the covering factor and the turbulent velocity also support the conclusion that the two regions are spatially separated. The measured acceleration of the line systematic shift is too large to connect it with the orbital motion at a distance of the Broad Line Region (BLR) in this source. It may imply a precessing inner disk illuminating the BLR. Further monitoring is still needed to better constrain the variability mechanism., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics (in press)

We offer a broad review of Balmer line phenomenology in type 1 active galactic nuclei, briefly sum- marising luminosity and radio loudness effects, and discussing interpretation in terms of nebular physics along the 4D eigenvector 1 sequence of quasars. We stress that relatively rare, peculiar Balmer line profiles (i.e., with large shifts with respect to the rest frame or double and multiple peaked) that start attracted attentions since the 1970s are still passable of multiple dynamical interpretation. More mainstream objects are still not fully understood as well, since competing dynamical models and geometries are possible. While quasar outflows may be quasi-ubiquitous, there are significant differences on a source-by- source basis. These differences can be organized along the 4D Eigenvector 1 sequence: at least at low z, with only Population A sources radiating at relatively high Eddington ratio and showing prominent high-velocity outflows in Civ {\lambda}1549 line profiles. We discuss in this paper VLT-FORS observations of Civ {\lambda}1549 emission line profiles for a high-luminosity sample of Hamburg- ESO quasars and how they are affected by outflow motion as a function of quasar luminosity. Our high- luminosity sample has the notable advantage that the rest frame has been accurately determined from previous VLT-ISAAC observations of H{\beta} in the J, H, and K bands. This makes measures of inter-line velocity shifts accurate and free of systemic biases. As the redshift increases and the luminosity of the brightest quasars increases, powerful, high-velocity outflows become more frequent. We discuss the outflow contextualisation, fol- lowing the 4DE1 formalism, as a tool for understanding the nature of the so-called weak lined quasars (WLQ) discovered in recent years as a new, poorly understood class of quasars. We estimate the kinetic power associ- ated with Civ {\lambda}1549 outflows and suggest that the host galaxies in the most luminous sources likely experience significant feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

[Oiii]{\lambda}{\lambda}4959,5007 "blue outliers" -- that are suggestive of outflows in the narrow line region of quasars -- appear to be much more common at intermediate z (high luminosity) than at low z. About 40% of quasars in a Hamburg ESO intermediate-z sample of 52 sources qualify as blue outliers (i.e., quasars with [OIII] {\lambda}{\lambda}4959,5007 lines showing large systematic blueshifts with respect to rest frame). In previous studies, it has been shown that the long term time average jet power, $\overline{Q}$, is correlated with the spectral index in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), $\alpha_{EUV}$ (defined by $F_{\nu} \sim \nu^{-\alpha_{EUV}}$ computed between 700\AA\, and 1100\AA\,). Larger $\overline{Q}$ tends to decrease the EUV emission. This is a curious relationship because it connects a long term average over $\sim 10^{6}$ years with an instantaneous measurement of the EUV. The EUV appears to be emitted adjacent to the central supermassive black hole and the most straightforward explanation of the correlation is that the EUV emitting region interacts in real time with the jet launching mechanism. Alternatively stated, the $\overline{Q}$ - $\alpha_{EUV}$ correlation is a manifestation of a contemporaneous (real time) jet power, $Q(t)$, correlation with $\alpha_{EUV}$. In order to explore this possibility, this paper considers the time variability of the strong radio jet of the quasar 1442+101 that is not aberrated by strong Doppler enhancement. This high redshift (z = 3.55) quasar is uniquely suited for this endeavor as the EUV is redshifted into the optical observing window allowing for convenient monitoring. More importantly, it is bright enough to be seen through the Lyman forest and its radio flux is strong enough that it has been monitored frequently. Quasi-simultaneous monitoring (five epochs spanning $\sim 40$ years) show that increases in $Q(t)$ correspond to decreases in the EUV as expected., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We discuss the observational evidences of the morphological transformation of Spirals into S0 galaxies in the cluster environment exploiting two big databases of galaxy clusters: WINGS (0.04 < z < 0.07) and EDisCS (0.4 < z < 0.8). The most important results are: 1) the average number of S0 galaxies in clusters is almost a factor of $\sim 3 - 4$ larger today than at redshift $z \sim 1$; 2) the fraction of S0's to Spirals increases on average by a factor $\sim$ 2 every Gyr; 3) the average rate of transformation for Spirals (not considering the infall of new galaxies from the cosmic web) is: $\sim$ 5 Sp into S0's per Gyr and $\sim$ 2 Sp into E's per Gyr; 4) there are evidences that the interstellar gas of Spirals is stripped by an hot intergalactic medium; 5) there are also indirect hints that major/minor merging events have played a role in the transformation of Spiral galaxies. In particular, we show that: 1) the ratio between the number of S0's and Spirals (NS0/NSp) in the WINGS clusters is correlated with their X-ray luminosity $L_X$ ; 2) that the brightest and massive S0's are always close to the cluster center; 3) that the mean Sersic index of S0's is always larger than that of Spirals (and lower than E's) for galaxy stellar masses above $10^9.5$ Msun; 4) that the number of E's in clusters cannot be constant; 5) that the largest difference between the mean mass of S0's and E's with respect to Spirals is observed in clusters with low velocity dispersion. Finally, by comparing the properties of the various morphological types for galaxies in clusters and in the field, we find that the most significant effect of the environment is the stripping of the outer galaxy regions, resulting in a systematic difference in effective radius and Sersic index., Comment: 38 pages, 20 figures

Only a handful of quasars have been identified as kinetically dominated, their long term time averaged jet power, $\overline{Q}$, exceeds the bolometric thermal emission, $L_{bol}$, associated with the accretion flow. This letter presents the first extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of a kinetically dominated quasar, 3C 270.1. The EUV continuum flux density of 3C 270.1 is very steep, $F_{\nu} \sim \nu^{-\alpha_{EUV}}$, $\alpha_{EUV} =2.98\pm 0.15$. This value is consistent with the correlation of $\overline{Q}/L_{bol}$ and $\alpha_{EUV}$ found in previous studies of the EUV continuum of quasars, the EUV deficit of radio loud quasars. Curiously, although ultraviolet broad absorption line (BAL) troughs in quasar spectra are anti-correlated with $\overline{Q}$, 3C 270.1 has been considered a BAL quasar based on an SDSS spectrum. This claim is examined in terms of the EUV spectrum of OVI 1and the highest resolution CIV spectrum in the archival data and the SDSS spectrum. First, from [OIII]4959,5007 (IR) observations and the UV spectral lines, it is concluded that the correct redshift for 3C 270.1 is 1.5266. Recently some pessimism has been expressed about our lack of progress in understanding quasars over the 50+ year since their discovery. It is worthwhile to look back at some of the progress that has been made - but still lies under the radar - perhaps because few people are working on optical/UV spectroscopy in this field. Great advances in understanding quasar phenomenology have emerged using eigenvector techniques. The 4D eigenvector 1 context provides a surrogate H-R Diagram for quasars with a source main sequence driven by Eddington ratio convolved with line-of-sight orientation. Appreciating the striking differences between quasars at opposite ends of the main sequence (so-called population A and B sources) opens the door towards a unified model of quasar physics, geometry and kinematics. We present a review of some of the progress that has been made over the past 15 years, and point out unsolved issues., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

Lobe-dominated radio-loud (LD RL) quasars occupy a restricted domain in the 4D Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) parameter space which implies restricted geometry/physics/kinematics for this subclass compared to the radio-quiet (RQ) majority of quasars. We discuss how this restricted domain for the LD RL parent population supports the notion for a RQ-RL dichotomy among Type 1 sources. 3C 57 is an atypical RL quasar that shows both uncertain radio morphology and falls in a region of 4DE1 space where RL quasars are rare. We present new radio flux and optical spectroscopic measures designed to verify its atypical optical/UV spectroscopic behaviour and clarify its radio structure. The former data confirms that 3C 57 falls off the 4DE1 quasar "main sequence" with both extreme optical FeII emission (R_{FeII} ~ 1) and a large CIV 1549 profile blueshift (~ -1500 km/s). These parameter values are typical of extreme Population A sources which are almost always RQ. New radio measures show no evidence for flux change over a 50+ year timescale consistent with compact steep-spectrum (CSS or young LD) over core-dominated morphology. In the 4DE1 context where LD RL are usually low L/L_{Edd} quasars we suggest that 3C 57 is an evolved RL quasar (i.e. large Black Hole mass) undergoing a major accretion event leading to a rejuvenation reflected by strong FeII emission, perhaps indicating significant heavy metal enrichment, high bolometric luminosity for a low redshift source and resultant unusually high Eddington ratio giving rise to the atypical CIV 1549., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

We present an unprecedented spectroscopic survey of the CaII triplet + OI for a sample of 14 luminous ($-$26 $\gtrsim$ M$_V$ $\gtrsim$ $-$29), intermediate redshift (0.85 $\lesssim$ $z$ $\lesssim$ 1.65) quasars. The ISAAC spectrometer at ESO VLT allowed us to cover the CaII NIR spectral region redshifted into the H and K windows. We describe in detail our data analysis which enabled us to detect CaII triplet emission in all 14 sources (with the possible exception of HE0048-2804) and to retrieve accurate line widths and fluxes of the triplet and OI $\lambda$8446. The new measurements show trends consistent with previous lower $z$ observations, indicating that CaII and optical FeII emission are probably closely related. The ratio between the CaII triplet and the optical FeII blend at $\lambda$4570 $\AA$ is apparently systematically larger in our intermediate redshift sample relative to a low-$z$ control sample. Even if this result needs a larger sample for adequate interpretation, higher CaII/optical FeII should be associated with recent episodes of star formation in the intermediate redshift quasars and, at least in part, explain an apparent correlation of CaII triplet equivalent width with $z$ and $L$. The CaII triplet measures yield significant constraints on the emitting region density and ionization parameter, implying CaII triplet emission from log n$_H$ $\gtrsim$ 11 [cm$^{-3}$] and ionization parameter log $U$ $\lesssim$ 1.5. Line width and intensity ratios suggest properties consistent with emission from the outer part of a high density broad line region (a line emitting accretion disk?)., Comment: 66 pages, 15 figures. Last year (2013) was more or less the 50th anniversary of the discovery of quasars. It is an interesting time to review what we know (and don't know) about them both empirically and theoretically. These compact sources involving line emitting plasma show extraordinary luminosities extending to one thousand times that of our Milky Way in emitting volumes of a few solar system diameters (bolometric luminosity log L$_{bol} \sim $ 44-48 [erg s$^{-1}$]: D=1-3 light months $\sim$ $10^3$ - $10^4$ gravitational radii). The advent of 8-10 meter class telescopes enables us to study them spectroscopically in ever greater detail. In 2000 we introduced a 4D Eigenvector 1 parameters space involving optical, UV and X-Ray measures designed to serve as a 4D equivalent of the 2D Hertzsprung-Russell diagram so important for depicting the diversity of stellar types and evolutionary states. This diagram has revealed a principal sequence of quasars distinguished by Eddington ratio (proportional to the accretion rate per unit mass). Thus while stellar differences are primarily driven by the mass of a star, quasar differences are apparently driven by the ratio of luminosity-to-mass. Out of this work has emerged the concept of two quasars populations A and B separated at Eddington ratio around 0.2 which maximizes quasar multispectral differences. The mysterious 8% of quasars that are radio-loud belong to population B which are the lowest accretors with the largest black hole masses. Finally we consider the most extreme population A quasars which are the highest accretors and in some cases are among the youngest quasars. Highly accreting quasars are characterized by distinguishing properties in the 4D eigenvector 1 parameter space that make them easily recognizable over a broad range range of redshift and luminosity. The 4D eigenvector 1 approach allows us to define selection criteria that go beyond the restriction to Narrow Line Seyfert 1s identified at low redshift. These criteria are probably able to isolate sources with a defined physical structure i.e., a geometrically thick, optically thick advection-dominated accretion disk (a "slim" disk). We stress that the importance of highly accreting quasars goes beyond the understanding of the details of their physics: their Eddington ratio is expected to saturate toward values of order unity, making them possible cosmological probes., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. The UV spectral range (1100 - 3000 A) contains the strongest resonance lines observed in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Analysis of UV line intensity ratios and profile shapes in quasar spectra provide diagnostics of physical and dynamical conditions in the broad line emitting region. This paper discusses properties of UV lines in type-1 AGN spectra, and how they lead an estimate of ionizing photon flux, chemical abundances, radius of the broad line emitting region and central black hole mass. The machine described in this document is an advanced Source of up to 20 MeV Gamma Rays based on Compton back-scattering, i.e. collision of an intense high power laser beam and a high brightness electron beam with maximum kinetic energy of about 720 MeV. Fully equipped with collimation and characterization systems, in order to generate, form and fully measure the physical characteristics of the produced Gamma Ray beam. The quality, i.e. phase space density, of the two colliding beams will be such that the emitted Gamma ray beam is characterized by energy tunability, spectral density, bandwidth, polarization, divergence and brilliance compatible with the requested performances of the ELI-NP user facility, to be built in Romania as the Nuclear Physics oriented Pillar of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure. This document illustrates the Technical Design finally produced by the EuroGammaS Collaboration, after a thorough investigation of the machine expected performances within the constraints imposed by the ELI-NP tender for the Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS), in terms of available budget, deadlines for machine completion and performance achievement, compatibility with lay-out and characteristics of the planned civil engineering.

[Abridged] Context: The advent of 8-10m class telescopes makes possible for the first time detailed comparison of quasars with similar luminosity and very different redshifts. Aims: A search for z-dependent gradients in line emission diagnostics and derived physical properties by comparing, in a narrow bolometric luminosity range (log L ~ 46.1 +/- 0.4 [\ergss]), some of the most luminous local (z < 0.6) quasars with some of the lowest luminosity sources yet found at redshift z = 2.1 ~ 2.5. Method: Spectra for 22 high z sources were obtained with the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) while the HST (largely FOS) archive provides a low redshift control sample. Comparison is made in the context of the 4D Eigenvector 1 formalism meaning that we divide both source samples into high accreting Population A and low accreting Population B sources. Results: CIV 1549 shows very similar properties at both redshifts confirming at high redshift the CIV profile differences between Pop. A and B that are well established in local quasars. The CIV blueshift that appears quasi- ubiquitous in higher L sources is found in only half (Pop. A) of quasars observed in both of our samples. A CIV evolutionary Baldwin effect is certainly disfavored. We find evidence for lower metallicity in the GTC sample that may point toward a gradient with z. No evidence for a gradient in black hole mass or Eddington ratio is found. Conclusions: Spectroscopic differences established at low redshift are also present in much higher redshift quasars. Given that our samples involve sources with very similar luminosity the evidence for a systematic metallicity decrease, if real, points toward an evolutionary effect. We propose a method to identify quasars radiating closest to the Eddington limit, defining primary and secondary selection criteria in the optical, UV and X-ray spectral range based on the 4D eigenvector 1 formalism. We then show that it is possible to derive a redshift-independent estimate of luminosity for extreme Eddington ratio sources. Using preliminary samples of these sources in three redshift intervals (as well as two mock samples), we test a range of cosmological models. Results are consistent with concordance cosmology but the data are insufficient for deriving strong constraints. Mock samples indicate that application of the method proposed in this paper using dedicated observations would allow to set stringent limits on Omega_M and significant constraints on Omega_Lambda., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present high S/N UV spectra for eight quasars at z $\sim$ 3 obtained with VLT/FORS. The spectra enable us to analyze in detail the strong and weak emission features in the rest-frame range 1300-2000 A of each source (Ciii]$\lambda$1909, Siiii]$\lambda$1892, Aliii$\lambda$1860, Siii$\lambda$1814, Civ$\lambda$1549 and blended Siiv$\lambda$1397+Oiv]$\lambda$1402). Flux ratios Aliii$\lambda$1860/Siiii]$\lambda$1892, Civ$\lambda$1549/Aliii$\lambda$1860, Siiv$\lambda$1397+Oiv]$\lambda$1402/Siiii]$\lambda$1892 and Siiv$\lambda$1397+Oiv]$\lambda$1402/Civ$\lambda$1549 strongly constrain ionizing photon flux and metallicity through the use of diagnostic maps built from CLOUDY simulations. The radius of the broad line region is then derived from the ionizing photon flux applying the definition of the ionization parameter. The rBLR estimate and the width of a virial component isolated in prominent UV lines yields an estimate of black hole mass. We compare our results with previous estimates obtained from the rBLR - luminosity correlation customarily employed to estimate black hole masses of high redshift quasars., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1011.4248

[Abridged] We investigate the frequency of the various spectral types as a function both of the clusters' properties and of the galaxies' characteristics. In this way, using the same classification criteria adopted for higher redshift studies, we can consistently compare the properties of the local cluster population to those of their more distant counterparts. We describe a method we have developed to automatically measure the equivalent width of spectral lines in a robust way even in spectra with a non optimal signal to noise. Like this, we can derive a spectral classification reflecting the stellar content, based on the presence and strength of the [OII] and Hdelta lines. We are able to measure 4381 of the ~6000 originally observed spectra, in the fields of 48 clusters, 2744 of which are spectroscopically confirmed cluster members. The spectral classification is then analyzed as a function of galaxies' luminosity, stellar mass, morphology, local density and host cluster's global properties, and compared to higher redshift samples (MORPHS and EDisCS). The vast majority of galaxies in the local clusters population are passive objects, being also the most luminous and massive. At a magnitude limit of Mv<-18, galaxies in a post-starburst phase represent only ~11% of the cluster population and this fraction is reduced to ~5% at Mv<-19.5, which compares to the 18% at the same magnitude limit for high-z clusters. "Normal" star forming galaxies [e( c )] are proportionally more common in local clusters. The relative occurrence of post--starbursts suggests a very similar quenching efficiency in clusters at redshifts in the 0 to ~1 range. Furthermore, more important than the global environment, the local density seems to be the main driver of galaxy evolution in local clusters, at least with respect to their stellar populations content., Comment: 22 pages, 12 Figures. In order to investigate where and how low ionization lines are emitted in quasars we are studying a new collection of spectra of the CaII triplet at $\lambda$8498, $\lambda$8542, $\lambda$8662 observed with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) using the Infrared Spectrometer And Array Camera (ISAAC). Our sample involves luminous quasars at intermediate redshift for which CaII observations are almost nonexistent. We fit the CaII triplet and the OI $\lambda$8446 line using the H$\beta$ profile as a model. We derive constraints on the line emitting region from the relative strength of the CaII triplet, OI $\lambda$8446 and H$\beta$., Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research

The formation of low emission lines in quasars and active galactic nuclei is still an open issue. Aided by the organizing power of the 4D eigenvector 1 scheme, we review basic developments since the 1980s, devoting special attention to the CaII IR triplet and the OI 8446 emission lines. Coverage of these lines is cumbersome since they are shifted in an inconvenient IR domain already at modest redshifts (~ 0.2). Their detection is also difficult since they are faint and often buried in the Ca II absorption of the host galaxy. We discuss how these lines can provide unambiguous constraints on the physical conditions of the broad line emitting regions of quasars when detected in emission, and summarise preliminary results for a sample of luminous, intermediate redshift quasars., Comment: To appear in the Astronomical Review

We review the basic techniques for extracting information about quasar structure and kinematics from the broad emission lines in quasars. We consider which lines can most effectively serve as virial estimators of black hole mass. At low redshift the Balmer lines,particularly broad H beta, are the lines of choice. For redshifts greater than 0.7 - 0.8 one can follow H beta into the IR windows or find an H beta surrogate. We explain why UV CIV 1549 is not a safe virial estimator and how MgII 2800 serves as the best virial surrogate for H beta up to the highest redshift quasar known at z ~ 7. We show how spectral binning in a parameter space context (4DE1) makes possible a more effective comparison of H beta and MgII. It also helps to derive more accurate mass estimates from appropriately binned spectra and, finally, to map the dispersion in black hole mass and Eddington ratio across the quasar population. FWHM MgII is about 20% smaller than FWHM H beta in the majority of type 1 AGN requiring correction when comparing black hole mass estimates from these two lines. The 20% of sources showing narrowest FWHM H beta (< 4000 km/s) and strongest FeII (R_FeII >~ 1.0) emission (we call them bin A3-4 sources) do not show this FWHM difference and a blueshift detected in MgII for these sources suggests that FWHM H beta is the safer virial estimator for these extreme Eddington emitters., Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research
