Introduction Previous studies did not show a difference in terms of safety and efficacy among first‐line stent retriever (SR), contact aspiration (CA), or combined techniques for proximal large vessel occlusion strokes. However, the optimal reperfusion therapy in patients with primary distal medium vessel occlusion (DMVO) strokes is uncertain. We aimed to compare the clinical and procedural outcomes among first‐line SR, CA and combined techniques in patients with primary DMVO. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database from 14 comprehensive stroke centers in the US and Europe. Patients were included if they had a primary DMVO stroke due to MCA‐M3/M4, ACA‐A1/A2‐3, or PCA‐P1/P2‐3 and underwent mechanical thrombectomy with first‐line SR, CA, or combined technique. The primary outcome was FPE defined as eTICI 2c/3 on the first pass. Secondary outcomes included mFPE defined as eTICI 2b/3 on the first pass, successful reperfusion defined as eTICI 2b/3 at the end of the procedure. Clinical outcomes included 90‐day mRS0‐1 and 90‐day mRS0‐2. Safety measures included procedural complications, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), and 90‐day mortality. The secondary analysis aimed to identify the procedural and clinical outcomes in 3 matched cohorts: (SR vs. CA), (SR vs. combined technique), and (CA vs. combined technique). Results A total of 365 patients were eligible for analysis; 38.1% were female, with a mean age of 69.3 years and a median NIHSS score of 11 [7‐18]. The first‐line SR group consisted of n=74 (20.3%), CA group n=142 (38.9%), and combined technique group n=149 (40.8%). Patients with first‐line SR or combined technique had a lower median NIHSS score, less frequent MCA‐M3 segment occlusion, and less usage of the rescue strategy compared to those with first‐line CA, P

The frontoparietal attention network plays a pivotal role during working memory (WM) maintenance, especially under high-load conditions. Nevertheless, there is ongoing debate regarding whether this network relies on supramodal or modality-specific neural signatures. In this study, we used multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to evaluate the neural representation of visual versus auditory information during WM maintenance. During fMRI scanning, participants maintained small or large spatial configurations (low- or high-load trials) of either colour shades or sound pitches in WM for later retrieval. Participants were less accurate in retrieving high- vs. low-load trials, demonstrating an effective manipulation of WM load, irrespective of the sensory modality. The frontoparietal regions involved in maintaining high- vs. low-load spatial maps in either sensory modality were highlighted using a conjunction analysis. Widespread activity was found across the dorsal frontoparietal network, peaking on the frontal eye fields and the superior parietal lobule, bilaterally. Within these regions, MVPAs were performed to quantify the pattern of distinctness of visual vs. auditory neural codes during WM maintenance. These analyses failed to reveal distinguishable patterns in the dorsal frontoparietal regions, thus providing support for a common, supramodal neural code associated with the retention of either visual or auditory spatial configurations.

Introduction There are two approaches for treating stroke patients with tandem occlusions: the anterograde approach (AA, extracranial lesions first) and the retrograde approach (RA, intracranial lesion first). Both techniques are associated with favorable functional outcomes. We aimed to compare both techniques for efficacy and safety outcomes in a multicenter study. Methods Patient data were pooled from 17 centers and divided into AA and RA groups. We performed multivariable logistic regressions to evaluate the association between each group with efficacy and safety outcomes. Results 552 patients were included in the study, 270 (48.4%) were treated with the AA, and 288 (51.6%) with the RA. There were no differences between groups for functional outcome (mRS 0–2) at 90 days (aOR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.58‐1.48, p = 0.75), and successful reperfusion [mTICI >2b] (aOR = 0.83, 95%CI: 0.44‐1.56, p = 0.57). Similarly, we did not observe any differences for safety outcomes related to sICH (OR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.25‐1.29, p = 0.18), parenchymal hematoma type 2 (OR = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.3‐1.22, p = 0.16), and all‐cause mortality at 90 days (OR = 1.22, 95%CI: 0.66‐2.26, p = 0.52). However, the median puncture‐to‐reperfusion time was higher in AA compared with RA [59 minutes (IQR: 38–92) vs 53.5 minuntes (IQR: 37–87)]. Conclusions The AA and RA approaches for the treatment of tandem occlusions seem to achieve similar efficacy and safety outcomes. These results are consistent with those of a previous multi‐center study. Additionally, and in line with previous research, there is a puncture‐to‐reperfusion time difference between both approaches, which suggests a potential benefit when using the RA. However, further prospective randomized studies are needed to elucidate its benefit in achieving better clinical outcomes.

Introduction and objectives: Some atmospheric features have been linked to the triggering of myocardial infarction. Because data from the Temperate-Mediterranean is scarce, we sought to study whether meteorological parameters influence the incidence of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) as confirmed by primary percutaneous intervention in a city with temperate weather (Porto, Portugal). Methods: Retrospective analysis of a series of STEMI-patients from January 2010 to December 2017. Temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), precipitation, and atmospheric pressure were obtained from a government-led institute. We utilized a generalized linear model (GLM) with a Poisson distribution, where a series of models with multivariable analysis were computed. The effects (GLM coefficients) are presented as excess relative risk (ERR). Results: One thousand and four consecutive STEMI-patients were included. The most important predictors of STEMI were Tmin two days before (for 1 °C drop ERR=1.9%, p=0.009) and a 1% increase in RH three days before (EER=0.7%, p=0.006). Conversely, the same increase in RH the day before reduced the relative risk (EER=-0.6%, p=0.023). Temperature range, atmospheric pressure and precipitation had no impact on STEMI incidence. Conclusion: In a Temperate-Mediterranean city hot or cold temperature extremes, temperature drop and relative humidity had a significant impact on the occurrence of STEMI. Resumo: Introdução e objetivos: Algumas características atmosféricas relacionam-se com a ocorrência aumentada de enfarte agudo do miocárdio. Uma vez que os dados relativos a zonas mediterrâneas temperadas são pouco conhecidos, o nosso objetivo foi estudar a incidência de enfarte com elevação de ST em doentes submetidos a angioplastia primária, em relação com parâmetros atmosféricos, numa cidade de clima mediterrâneo temperado (Csb). Métodos: Análise retrospetiva de uma série de doentes com enfarte com elevação de ST tratados por angioplastia entre janeiro de 2010 e dezembro de 2017. Temperatura (T), humidade relativa (HR), precipitação e pressão atmosférica provenientes de registos do Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera. Modelos de análise linear generalizada (GLM) com distribuição de Poisson foram utilizados para computar vários modelos de análise multivariada, calculando-se excesso de risco relativo (ERR) e respetivos coeficientes (GLM) para cada parâmetro atmosférico estudado. Resultados: Foram incluídos 1004 doentes consecutivos. Os principais preditores da ocorrência de enfarte foram a T mínima dois dias anteriores ao evento (para 1 °C de diminuição, EER=1,9%, p=0,009) e 1% de aumento da HR três dias anteriores ao evento (EER=0,7%, p=0,006). Inversamente, o mesmo aumento da HR no dia anterior ao evento diminuiu o risco (EER=-0,6%, p=0,023). Não se obtiveram resultados significativos para a precipitação ou pressão atmosférica. Conclusão: Numa cidade de clima mediterrâneo temperado sem insultos climáticos extremos, a diminuição da temperatura e o aumento da humidade relativa influenciaram a incidência de enfarte com elevação de ST.

Abstract Strategies to reduce dependence on synthetic drugs for the treatment of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) infections in ruminants include the search for novel anthelmintic scaffolds on plants, yet salt-tolerant plants remain overlooked. This study aims to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic properties of selected salt-tolerant plants against GIN, and identify the potential bioactive secondary metabolites involved. For that purpose, 80% acetone/water extracts were prepared from dried biomass of aerial organs of nine salt-tolerant plant species and tested against Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis by the Larval Exsheathment Inhibition Assay (LEIA) and Egg Hatching Inhibition Assay (EHIA). Pistacia lentiscus, Limoniatrum monopetalum, Cladium mariscus and Helychrisum italicum picardi were the most active in both GIN and life stages. To investigate the role of polyphenols in the anthelmintic activity, four selected extracts were treated with polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP), and non-treated and treated samples were further characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-ESI-MSn). While polyphenols seem responsible for the EHIA properties, they are partially accountable to LEIA results. Several phenolics involved in the anthelmintic effects were identified and discussed. In sum, these species are rich sources of anthelmintic compounds and, therefore, are of major interest for nutraceutical and/or phytotherapeutic applications against GIN in ruminants.

Serological detection of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 can help establish rates of seroconversion. Here the authors develop a red cell agglutination test to detect antibodies against the receptor binding domain for distribution free of charge to qualified research groups.

The use of plants and their metabolites stands as a promising option to tackle parasitic infections by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in integrated control strategies. Still, the influence of environmental and phenological factors, and their interactions, in the wild on the metabolomics and biological properties of target plant species, is often disregarded. In this work, we hypothesized that variations in the anthelmintic (AH) properties and chemical composition of extracts from the salt tolerant species Cladium mariscus L. Pohl (sawgrass) may be influenced by seasonal factors and organ-parts. To test this hypothesis, acetone/water extracts were prepared from dried biomass obtained from aerial organs collected from sawgrass in consecutive seasons and tested against Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis by the larval exsheathment inhibition assay (LEIA) and egg hatching inhibition assay (EHIA). To ascertain the role of plant organ, the activity of leaves and inflorescences extracts from summer samples was compared. The role of polyphenols in the anthelmintic activity depending on GINs and fluctuations across seasons and plant organs was assessed using polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP), coupled with an in-depth chemical profiling analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography completed with electrospray ionization mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-ESI-MSn). Main differences in anthelmintic activities were observed for summer and autumn samples, for both assays. Moreover, inflorescences’ extracts were significantly more active than those from leaves against both parasite species on EHIA and against H. contortus on LEIA. Application of PVPP totally inhibit the AH effects based on EHIA and only partly for LEIA. Non-treated PVPP extracts were predominantly composed of flavan-3-ols, proanthocyanidins, luteolin and glycosylated flavonoids, while two flavonoid glycosides were quantified in all PVPP-treated samples. Thus, the activity of such compounds should be further explored, although some unknown metabolites remain to be identified. This study reinforces the hypothesis of the AH potential of sawgrass and of its polyphenolic metabolites uses as nutraceutical and/or phytotherapeutic drugs.

Parasitic diseases, especially those caused by protozoans and helminths, such as malaria, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, and lymphatic filariasis, are the cause of millions of morbidities and deaths every year, mainly in tropical regions. Nature has always provided valuable antiparasitic agents, and efforts targeting the identification of antiparasitic drugs from plants have mainly focused on glycophytes. However, salt-tolerant plants (halophytes) have lately attracted the interest of the scientific community due to their medicinal assets, which include antiparasitic properties. This review paper gathers the most relevant information on antiparasitic properties of halophyte plants, targeting human uses. It includes an introduction section containing a summary of some of the most pertinent characteristics of halophytes, followed by information regarding the ethnomedicinal uses of several species towards human parasitic diseases. Then, information is provided related to the antiprotozoal and anthelmintic properties of halophytes, determined by in vitro and in vivo methods, and with the bioactive metabolites that may be related to such properties. Finally, a conclusion section is presented, addressing perspectives for the sustainable exploitation of selected species.

Firefighting is physically and physiologically exhausting besides encompassing exposure to toxic fire emissions. Biomonitoring studies from the past five years have been significantly contributing to characterize the occupational-related health effects in this group of professionals and to improve risk assessment. Therefore, this study gathers and critically discusses the most characterized biomarkers of effect (oxidative stress, DNA and protein damage, stress hormones, inflammation, and vascular, lung, and liver injury), including those potentially more promising to be explored in future studies, and their relation with health outcomes. Various studies proved an association between exposures to fire emissions and/or heat and significantly altered values of biomarkers of inflammation (soluble adhesion molecules, tumor necrosis factor, interleukins, and leucocyte count), vascular damage and tissue injury (pentraxin-3, vascular endothelial growth factor, and cardiac troponin T) in firefighting forces. Moreover, preliminary data of DNA damage in blood, urinary mutagenicity and 8-isoprostaglandin in exhaled breath condensate suggest that these biomarkers of oxidative stress should be further explored. However, most of the reported studies are based on cross-sectional designs, which limit full identification and characterization of the risk factors and their association with development of work-related diseases. Broader studies based on longitudinal designs and strongly supported by the analysis of several types of biomarkers in different biological fluids are further required to gain deeper insights into the firefighters occupational related health hazards and contribute to implementation of new or improved surveillance programs.

Este estudo analisa a influência de determinados estímulos de marketing (propaganda, informação veiculada e preço) no consumo de produtos ecológicos, comparando o comportamento dos consumidores portugueses das gerações X e Y. Através de uma pesquisa quantitativa, cross-sectional, com base num questionário online, cujos resultados foram analisados com recurso ao software SPSS Statistics 25, concluímos que existem algumas semelhanças entre ambas as gerações, como a capacidade de identificação dos produtos ecológicos e a predisposição para a sua compra, o impacto positivo das campanhas de comunicação com apelo emocional e a perceção da importância dos rótulos dos produtos ecológicos. A variável que mais distingue o comportamento de ambas as gerações é o preço, pois a geração Y está mais predisposta a pagar um valor superior por um produto ecológico. Esta investigação contribui para a literatura sobre o comportamento do consumidor, especialmente no âmbito da variável “geração”, aplicado ao contexto do consumo de produtos ecológicos. Também ajuda as empresas a posicionarem-se melhor na relação com os consumidores de ambas as gerações analisadas. A definição de estratégias de targeting mais acuradas relativamente à promoção, preço e decisão de compra pode então tomar como ponto de partida os resultados deste estudo.

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that affects not only the motor but also the cognitive domain. In particular, cognitive symptoms such as impaired executive skills and deficits in recognizing other individuals’ mental state may emerge many years before the motor symptoms. This study was aimed at testing two cognitive hypotheses suggested by previous research with a new Stroop task created for the purpose: 1) the impairment of emotion recognition in HD is moderated by the emotions’ valence, and 2) inhibitory control is impaired in HD. Forty manifest and 20 pre-manifest HD patients and their age- and gender-matched controls completed both the traditional “Stroop Color and Word Test” (SCWT) and the newly created “Stroop Emotion Recognition under Word Interference Task” (SERWIT), which consist in 120 photographs of sad, calm, or happy faces with either congruent or incongruent word interference. On the SERWIT, impaired emotion recognition in manifest HD was moderated by emotion type, with deficits being larger in recognizing sadness and calmness than in recognizing happiness, but it was not moderated by stimulus congruency. On the SCWT, six different interference scores yielded as many different patterns of group effects. Overall our results corroborate the hypothesis that impaired emotion recognition in HD is moderated by the emotions’ valence, but do not provide evidence for the hypothesis that inhibitory control is impaired in HD. Further research is needed to learn more about the psychological mechanisms underlying the moderating effect of emotional valence on impaired emotion recognition in HD, and to corroborate the hypothesis that the inhibitory processes involved in Stroop tasks are not impaired in HD. Looking beyond this study, the SERWIT promises to make important contributions to disentangling the cognitive and the psychomotor aspects of neurological disorders. Children, an important vulnerable group, spend most of their time at schools (up to 10 h per day, mostly indoors) and the respective air quality may significantly impact on children health. Thus, this work reviews the published studies on children biomonitoring and environmental exposure to particulate matter (PM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at school microenvironments (indoors and outdoors), major sources and potential health risks. A total of 28, 35, and 31% of the studies reported levels that exceeded the international outdoor ambient air guidelines for PM10, PM2.5, and benzo(a)pyrene, respectively. Indoor and outdoor concentrations of PM10 at European schools, the most characterized continent, ranged between 7.5 and 229 μg/m3 and 21–166 μg/m3, respectively; levels of PM2.5 varied between 4 and 100 μg/m3 indoors and 6.1–115 μg/m3 outdoors. Despite scarce information in some geographical regions (America, Oceania and Africa), the collected data clearly show that Asian children are exposed to the highest concentrations of PM and PAHs at school environments, which were associated with increased carcinogenic risks and with the highest values of urinary total monohydroxyl PAH metabolites (PAH biomarkers of exposure). Additionally, children attending schools in polluted urban and industrial areas are exposed to higher levels of PM and PAHs with increased concentrations of urinary PAH metabolites in comparison with children from rural areas. Strong evidences demonstrated associations between environmental exposure to PM and PAHs with several health outcomes, including increased risk of asthma, pulmonary infections, skin diseases, and allergies. Nevertheless, there is a scientific gap on studies that include the characterization of PM fine fraction and the levels of PAHs in the total air (particulate and gas phases) of indoor and outdoor air of school environments and the associated risks for the health of children. There is a clear need to improve indoor air quality in schools and to establish international guidelines for exposure limits in these environments. Response-contingent stimulation is a behavioral strategy used to improve the situation of patients with disorders of consciousness. Such strategy involves the presentation of brief periods (e.g., 10 to 15 s) of stimulation considered preferred by the patients, contingent on (immediately after) the emission of specific patients’ responses. The aim is to help the patients learn the link between their responding and the preferred stimulation and thus learn to use their responding to access the stimulation in a self-determined/independent manner. Achieving these goals is considered important for the patients’ recovery process and thus the response-contingent stimulation strategy that promotes such an achievement can be considered a valuable treatment approach. The same strategy combined with the use of periods of non-contingent stimulation (i.e., stimulation delivered independent of responding) may also serve as an assessment supplement with patients with apparent unresponsive wakefulness. The patients’ increase in responding during the response-contingent stimulation and decline in responding during the non-contingent stimulation could be taken as a sign of discrimination between conditions, and possibly a sign of awareness of the immediate environmental situation, compatible with a diagnosis of minimally conscious state. This paper analyzes a number of studies aimed at using the response-contingent stimulation as a treatment strategy and a number of studies aimed at combining response-contingent stimulation with non-contingent stimulation for treatment and assessment purposes. The results of the studies are discussed in terms of the effectiveness, accessibility and affordability of the strategy. The need for new research (i.e., replication studies) is also pointed out.

Objetivo: O cyberbullying tem despertado a atenção na comunidade científica, existindo já uma maior preocupação por parte dos órgãos políticos perante um tema que se revela uma preocupação de saúde pública. Com a presente revisão sistemática da literatura pretende-se compreender a abordagem dos cuidados de saúde primários na identificação e prevenção do cyberbullying em crianças/jovens. Métodos: Com recurso a várias bases de dados (PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science e EBSCO), pesquisaram-se artigos científicos utilizando os operadores booleanos AND e NOT com as palavras chave Cyberbullying, Child, Adolescent e Primary Health Care. Incluíram-se os artigos entre os anos 2013 e 2018 com resumo e texto completo. Resultados: Identificaram-se no total sessenta e três artigos. Vinte e três artigos eram duplicados, onze artigos eram periódicos de revistas consideradas de cariz não-científico. Após leitura integral, eliminaram-se vinte e quatro artigos, em que somente cinco cumpriram com os critérios de inclusão. Conclusão: As Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação apresentam benefícios e malefícios, onde a família/pessoa significativa e os enfermeiros desempenham um papel primordial na prevenção e antecipação de comportamentos de risco para o desenvolvimento integral da criança/jovem. Justifica-se um maior investimento na formação de profissionais de saúde, dotando-os de estratégias de avaliação e intervenção na prevenção do cyberbullying, identificando vítimas e agressores em todos os contextos (escolar, familiar, cuidados de saúde primário e emergência hospitalar). Não tendo sido encontrados estudos realizados na Europa, sugere-se maior investigação que permita melhor compreender a promoção positiva do cuidar da criança/jovem e família perante o cyberbullying.

INTRODUCTION: Acute poisoning are a frequent cause of recurring to emergency departments. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize poisoning in one emergency department. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We made a retrospective study of the admissions to the emergency department of Famalicão and Santo Tirso´s units of Centro Hospitalar do Médio Ave in Portugal for 6 months. RESULTS: The 125 selected patients, 63 men and 62 women, had a mean age of 46.7 years. The intoxication was voluntary in 99 patients (79.2%) and accidental in 26 patients (20.8%). Ethanol, benzodiazepines and antipsychotics were the three most frequent toxic groups. There was contact with more than one type of toxic in 32 cases (25.6%). On average, patients remained at 9h10min in emergency department. There were no complications in 108 patients. The most common destinations were the family doctor and the assessment by psychiatry. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: This study allowed us to know the reality of this emergency service, which will facilitate the approach of acute poisoning. For more information about the poisonings in Portugal, should be performed prospective multicenter studies in order to understand consumption patterns, to know the more often involved substances and the associated complications, and prepare preventive action plans in the community.

Background: Leptospirosis in cattle is recognized as a major cause of reproductive loses due to abortions, early embryonic death, and infertility. The type of Leptospira serovars that are currently circulating in Colombian herds is largely unknown due to the lack of national reports. Objective: The prevalence of antibodies specific to 13 Leptospira spp serovars was investigated in unvaccinated cows from 26 herds in San Pedro de los Milagros (Province of Antioquia) dairy region. Methods: Microscopic agglutination test was used on serum samples, following WHO recommendations. Results: A total of 112/900 (12.4%) of the animals had antibody titers of 1:100 or greater to at least one Leptospira serovar. Of those positive, 34/900 (3,8%) animals seroconverted to two or more serovars. In order of decreasing prevalence, the serovars detected were: hardjo prajitno, pomona, grippotyphosa, tarassovi, copenhageni, canicola, cellodeni and bratislava. There were 28 animals seropositive to serovar hardjo. Conclusion: Our results indicate that leptospirosis should be included as a differential diagnosis for various reproductive problems in this region.

Yeast-based bioethanol production from lignocellulosic hydrolysates (LH) is an attractive and sustainable alternative for biofuel production. However, the presence of acetic acid (AA) in LH is still a major problem. Indeed, above certain concentrations, AA inhibits yeast fermentation and triggers a regulated cell death (RCD) process mediated by the mitochondria and vacuole. Understanding the mechanisms involved in AA-induced RCD (AA-RCD) may thus help select robust fermentative yeast strains, providing novel insights to improve lignocellulosic ethanol (LE) production. Herein, we hypothesized that zinc vacuolar transporters are involved in vacuole-mediated AA-RCD, since zinc enhances ethanol production and zinc-dependent catalase and superoxide dismutase protect from AA-RCD. In this work, zinc limitation sensitized wild-type cells to AA-RCD, while zinc supplementation resulted in a small protective effect. Cells lacking the vacuolar zinc transporter Zrt3 were highly resistant to AA-RCD, exhibiting reduced vacuolar dysfunction. Moreover, zrt3Δ cells displayed higher ethanol productivity than their wild-type counterparts, both when cultivated in rich medium with AA (0.29 g L−1 h−1 versus 0.11 g L−1 h−1) and in an LH (0.73 g L−1 h−1 versus 0.55 g L−1 h−1). Overall, the deletion of ZRT3 emerges as a promising strategy to increase strain robustness in LE industrial production.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) data provide information on total exposure regardless of the route and sources of exposure. HBM studies have been applied to quantify human exposure to contaminants and environmental/occupational pollutants by means of determining the parent compounds, their metabolites, or even their reaction products in biological matrices. HBM studies performed among the Portuguese population are dispersed and limited. Thus, to overcome this knowledge gap, this work reviews the published Portuguese HBM information concerning mycotoxins detected in the urine, serum, milk, hair, and nails of different groups of the Portuguese population. This integrative approach to the available HBM data allows us to analyze the main determinants and patterns of exposure of the Portuguese population to the selected hazardous compounds, as well as to assess the potential health risks. We also aimed to identify the main difficulties and challenges of HBM through the analysis of the enrolled studies. Ultimately, this study aims to support national and European policies in promoting human health by summarizing the most important outcomes and lessons learned through the HBM studies carried out in Portugal.

Nosocomial and medical device-induced biofilm infections affect millions of lives and urgently require innovative preventive approaches. These pathologies have led to the development of numerous antimicrobial strategies, an emergent topic involving both natural and synthetic routes, among which some are currently under testing for clinical approval and use. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are ideal candidates for this fight. Therefore, the strategies involving surface functionalization with AMPs to prevent bacterial attachment/biofilms formation have experienced a tremendous development over the last decade. In this review, we describe the different mechanisms of action by which AMPs prevent bacterial adhesion and/or biofilm formation to better address their potential as anti-infective agents. We additionally analyze AMP immobilization techniques on a variety of materials, with a focus on biomedical applications. Furthermore, we summarize the advances made to date regarding the immobilization strategies of AMPs on various surfaces and their ability to prevent the adhesion of various microorganisms. Progress toward the clinical approval of AMPs in antibiotherapy is also reviewed.

It is presented a case of a 75-year-old Caucasian male patient who was admitted to hospital with a history of painful swollen hands and feet, associated with worsening mobility. Examination revealed bilateral pitting edema of dorsum of hands and feet. Initial blood test showed 10.7 g/L hemoglobin with normochromic and normocytic anemia, raised inflammatory markers (erythrocyte sedimentation rate 60 mm, C-reactive protein 16.73 mg/dL) and normal white blood cells count. Autoantibody screen and rheumatoid factor were negative, with positive HLA-B27. Radiological findings of hands and feet did not show any erosions. The patient was also screened and investigated for associated malignancies; the tumor markers and the computed tomography thorax/abdomen were reported as normal. The patient responded extremely well to low dose prednisolone at 20 mg daily dosage. Further follow up 5 weeks later on tapering dose of prednisolone showed complete resolution of signs and symptoms without any further flare-ups. Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema is a definite syndrome, a rare subset of polyarthritis with favorable outcome and has a good prognosis in older patients. This case illustrates the interesting diagnosis exercise that is needed, once the multiple conditions that may be related with the disease support that this is a syndrome with potentially heterogeneous etiologies. Looking for underlying malignancy is recommended.

The aim of this study was to determine the digestion of dry matter (MS), crude protein (PC) and amino acids (AA) in dairy cows. Two cannulated cows were used for the determination of passage rate (Kp), in situ ruminal degradability (DR) and intestinal digestibility (DI) by abomasal catheter. The data to calculate Kp was analyzed with NLIN procedure by SAS, and descriptive statistics for DR and DI of MS, PC and AA from Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum), a commercial supplement and two sources of rumen-protected AA. The study showed a Kp and a ruminal retention time of 0.036 h-1 and 27.4 h. The highest values from DR of MS and CP were from Kikuyu grass (69.0 and 61.8%) and concentrate (84.7 and 77.2%), followed by MetP (60.2 and 66.7%) and LysP (6.72 and 11.4%). The highest percentages of rumen indegradable amino acids (AADR) were from Kikuyu and concentrate, varying between 58.7 and 68% in forage, and 76.1 and 82.9% in the concentrate. The DR was 11.5 and 65.8% in LysP and MetP, respectively. The DI of AA (%AADR) varied between 42.3 and 77.4% for Kikuyu and 42.2 and 59.3% for concentrate. The values for the protected amino acids were 42.1 for LysP and 58.6 for MetP.

This paper presents an overview of recent technology-aided programs (i. e., technology-aided support tools) designed to help people with significant disabilities (a) engage in adaptive responses, functional activities, and leisure and communication, and thus (b) interact with their physical and social environment and improve their performance/achievement. In order to illustrate the support tools, the paper provides an overview of recent studies aimed at developing and assessing those tools. The paper also examines the tools' accessibility and usability, and comments on possible ways of modifying and advancing them to improve their impact. The tools taken into consideration concern, among others, (a) microswitches linked to computer systems, and aimed at promoting (i.e., through positive stimulation) minimal responses or functional body movements in individuals with intellectual disabilities and motor impairments; (b) computer systems, tablets, or smartphones aimed at supporting functional activity engagement of individuals with intellectual disabilities or Alzheimer's disease; and (c) microswitches with computer-aided systems, elaborate communication devices, and specifically arranged smartphones or tablets, directed at promoting leisure, communication, or both.

Abstract. Fatigue crack growth (FCG) depends on loading, geometry and also material properties. Since FCG is supposedly linked to crack tip plastic deformation, material’s yield stress, Y0, is an important parameter. The main objective here is to develop a parametric study focused on the effect of Y0 on FCG. The study is based on the plastic CTOD, dp, determined numerically using the finite element method. The increase of Y0 was found to decrease dp, and therefore FCG rate. The variation is non-linear, being more important for lower values of Y0. The effect of Y0 was found to be much more relevant for the 7050 aluminium alloy than for the 304L stainless steel, which indicated a major influence of isotropic saturation stress. With the inclusion of crack closure, the reduction of dp is kept, but there is a substantial reduction of dp and therefore of FCG rate.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of disabling, destructive and incurable immune-mediated inflammatory diseases comprising Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), disorders that are highly prevalent worldwide and demand a large investment in healthcare. A persistent inflammatory state enables the dysfunction and destruction of healthy tissue, hindering the initiation and endurance of wound healing. Current treatments are ineffective at counteracting disease progression. Further, increased risk of serious side effects, other comorbidities and/or opportunistic infections highlight the need for effective treatment options. Gut microbiota, the key to preserving a healthy state, may, alternatively, increase a patient’s susceptibility to IBD onset and development given a relevant bacterial dysbiosis. Hence, the main goal of this review is to showcase the main conventional and emerging therapies for IBD, including microbiota-inspired untargeted and targeted approaches (such as phage therapy) to infection control. Special recognition is given to existing targeted strategies with biologics (via monoclonal antibodies, small molecules and nucleic acids) and stimuli-responsive (pH-, enzyme- and reactive oxygen species-triggered release), polymer-based nanomedicine that is specifically directed towards the regulation of inflammation overload (with some nanosystems additionally functionalized with carbohydrates or peptides directed towards M1-macrophages). The overall goal is to restore gut balance and decrease IBD’s societal impact.

In our endeavor to identify salt-tolerant plants with potential veterinary uses in ruminants’ production strategies, we focused on Cladium mariscus L. Pohl (sawgrass), due to its high total phenolic and tannin content, anti-radical properties, and ethnomedicinal uses. Aerial parts were collected along the year in Southern Portugal and evaluated for the nutritional profile and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), aiming for its use as feed. Acetone extracts were appraised for total contents in phenolics (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), and tannins (CTC), as well as the chemical composition by HPLC-DAD and in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, targeting its exploitation as phytotherapeutic products. Sawgrass biomass has a limited nutritive value, due to its high neutral detergent fiber (NDF; 596–690 g kg−1 dry matter (DM)) and acid detergent fiber (ADF; 330–418 g kg−1 DM) contents, low crude protein (51.8–87.3 g kg−1 DM) and IVOMD (172–317 g kg−1 organic matter (OM)). Despite differences among seasons, the mineral profile was adequate. The extracts were rich in TPC (88–112 mg g−1), CTC (115–169 mg g−1), and TFC (18.5–20.2 mg g−1), and displayed significant antioxidant capacity, particularly in summer and autumn, whilst no seasonal influence was detected for anti-inflammatory properties (30% reduction of nitric oxide production). Eleven phenolics were quantified: chlorogenic, ferulic, and syringic acids were the most abundant, especially in the autumn sample. Overall, despite the low nutritional interest, sawgrass extracts hold the potential as a source of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phenolic compounds.

Context: Several Polygonum species (Polygonaceae) are used in traditional medicine in Asia, Europe and Africa to treat inflammation and diabetes. Objective: Evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic potential of methanol and dichloromethane extracts of leaves and roots of the halophyte Polygonum maritimum L. Material and methods: Antioxidant activity was determined (up to 1 mg/mL) as radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), copper (CCA) and iron (ICA) chelating activities and iron reducing power (FRAP). NO production was measured in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages for 24 h at concentrations up to 100 μg/mL and antidiabetic potential was assessed by α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition (up to 10 mg/mL) assays. The phytochemical composition of the extracts was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: The methanol leaf extract had the highest activity against DPPH• (IC50 = 26 μg/mL) and ABTS+• (IC50 = 140 μg/mL), FRAP (IC50 = 48 μg/mL) and CCA (IC50 = 770 μg/mL). Only the dichloromethane leaf extract (LDCM) showed anti-inflammatory activity (IC50 = 48 μg/mL). The methanol root (IC50 = 19 μg/mL) and leaf (IC50 = 29 μg/mL) extracts strongly inhibited baker’s yeast α-glucosidase, but LDCM had higher rat’s α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50 = 2527 μg/mL) than acarbose (IC50 = 4638 μg/mL). GC-MS analysis identified β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, 1-octacosanol and linolenic acid as possible molecules responsible for the observed bioactivities. Conclusions: Our findings suggest P. maritimum as a source of high-value health promoting commodities for alleviating symptoms associated with oxidative and inflammatory diseases, including diabetes.

A partir do tema democratização da informação, este trabalho apresenta o processo de construção do Jornal Nosso Bairro em Pauta, principal atividade jornalística que o Projeto de Extensão Nosso Bairro em Pauta, da Universidade Feevale, desenvolveu ao longo dos seus 13 anos. As atividades realizadas partiram das relações entre mídia, educação e cultura, oportunizando a participação da comunidade na construção do periódico e capacitando os acadêmicos no desenvolvimento de atividades de cunho comunitário, formando um vínculo com a população local. O jornal teve como finalidade oportunizar o processo de resgate do respeito e da valorização da opinião da escola pública na reconstrução da identidade da sua comunidade.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by symmetrical swelling and skin induration of the distal portions of the arms and/or legs, evolving into a scleroderma-like appearance, accompanied by peripheral blood eosinophilia. It is a rare disease with a poorly understood etiology. Corticosteroid treatment remains the standard therapy, either taken alone or in association with an immunosuppressive drug. This paper presents a case of a male patient with palpebral edema and marked eosinophilia, diagnosed with intestinal parasitic infection in October 2006. He was treated with an antiparasitic drug, but both the swelling and the analytical changes remained. This was followed by a skin and muscle biopsy, which turned out to be compatible with eosinophilic fasciitis. There was progressive worsening of the clinical state, with stiffness of the abdominal wall and elevated inflammatory parameters, and the patient was referred to the Immunology Department, medicated with corticosteroids and methotrexate. Over the years there were therapeutic adjustments and other causes were excluded. Currently the patient continues to be monitored, and there is no evidence of active disease. The case described in this article is interesting because of the diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis probably associated/coexisting with a parasite infection. This case report differs from others in that there is an uncommon cause associated with the onset of the disease, instead of the common causes such as trauma, medication, non-parasitic infections or cancer.

Our objective was to investigate the capacity to control a P3-based brain-computer interface (BCI) device for communication and its related (temporal) attention processing in a sample of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients with respect to healthy subjects. The ultimate goal was to corroborate the role of cognitive mechanisms in event-related potential (ERP)-based BCI control in ALS patients. Furthermore, the possible differences in such attentional mechanisms between the two groups were investigated in order to unveil possible alterations associated with the ALS condition. Thirteen ALS patients and 13 healthy volunteers matched for age and years of education underwent a P3-speller BCI task and a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. The RSVP task was performed by participants in order to screen their temporal pattern of attentional resource allocation, namely: (i) the temporal attentional filtering capacity (scored as T1%); and (ii) the capability to adequately update the attentive filter in the temporal dynamics of the attentional selection (scored as T2%). For the P3-speller BCI task, the online accuracy and information transfer rate (ITR) were obtained. Centroid Latency and Mean Amplitude of N200 and P300 were also obtained. No significant differences emerged between ALS patients and Controls with regards to online accuracy (p = 0.13). Differently, the performance in controlling the P3-speller expressed as ITR values (calculated offline) were compromised in ALS patients (p < 0.05), with a delay in the latency of P3 when processing BCI stimuli as compared with Control group (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the temporal aspect of attentional filtering which was related to BCI control (r = 0.51; p < 0.05) and to the P3 wave amplitude (r = 0.63; p < 0.05) was also altered in ALS patients (p = 0.01). These findings ground the knowledge required to develop sensible classes of BCI specifically designed by taking into account the influence of the cognitive characteristics of the possible candidates in need of a BCI system for communication.

Tactile speech aids, though extensively studied in the 1980’s and 1990’s, never became a commercial success. A hypothesis to explain this failure might be that it is difficult to obtain true perceptual integration of a tactile signal with information from auditory speech: exploitation of tactile cues from a tactile aid might require cognitive effort and so prevent speech understanding at the high rates typical of everyday speech. To test this hypothesis, we attempted to create true perceptual integration of tactile with auditory information in what might be considered the simplest situation encountered by a hearing-impaired listener. We created an auditory continuum between the syllables /BA/ and /VA/, and trained participants to associate /BA/ to one tactile stimulus and /VA/ to another tactile stimulus. After training, we tested if auditory discrimination along the continuum between the two syllables could be biased by incongruent tactile stimulation. We found that such a bias occurred only when the tactile stimulus was above, but not when it was below its previously measured tactile discrimination threshold. Such a pattern is compatible with the idea that the effect is due to a cognitive or decisional strategy, rather than to truly perceptual integration. We therefore ran a further study (Experiment 2), where we created a tactile version of the McGurk effect. We extensively trained two Subjects over 6 days to associate four recorded auditory syllables with four corresponding apparent motion tactile patterns. In a subsequent test, we presented stimulation that was either congruent or incongruent with the learnt association, and asked Subjects to report the syllable they perceived. We found no analog to the McGurk effect, suggesting that the tactile stimulation was not being perceptually integrated with the auditory syllable. These findings strengthen our hypothesis according to which tactile aids failed because integration of tactile cues with auditory speech occurred at a cognitive or decisional level, rather than truly at a perceptual level.

Four lipid-rich microalgal species from the Red Sea belonging to three different genera (Nannochloris, Picochlorum and Desmochloris), previously isolated as novel biodiesel feedstocks, were bioprospected for high-value, bioactive molecules. Methanol extracts were thus prepared from freeze-dried biomass and screened for different biological activities. Nannochloris sp. SBL1 and Desmochloris sp. SBL3 had the highest radical scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, and the best copper and iron chelating activities. All species had potent butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity (>50%) and mildly inhibited tyrosinase. Picochlorum sp. SBL2 and Nannochloris sp. SBL4 extracts significantly reduced the viability of tumoral (HepG2 and HeLa) cells with lower toxicity against the non-tumoral murine stromal (S17) cells. Nannochloris sp. SBL1 significantly reduced the viability of Leishmania infantum down to 62% (250 µg/mL). Picochlorum sp. SBL2 had the highest total phenolic content, the major phenolic compounds identified being salicylic, coumaric and gallic acids. Neoxanthin, violaxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein and β-carotene were identified in the extracts of all strains, while canthaxanthin was only identified in Picochlorum sp. SBL2. Taken together, these results strongly suggest that the microalgae included in this work could be used as sources of added-value products that could be used to upgrade the final biomass value.

Introdução: A identificação e referenciação precoce dos doentes com necessidades paliativas é fundamental para que em tempo útil possam usufruir da efetividade da intervenção precoce de cuidados paliativos. Referenciar para cuidados Paliativos é um importante, crescente e complexo desafio e processo para a prática dos profissionais de saúde, nomeadamente para os médicos. A falta de informação e formação podem impedir a proatividade no processo de referenciação precoce. Atualmente, existem já alguns instrumentos multidimensionais que ajudam a identificar a população com necessidades paliativas. A pergunta surpresa, validada para Portugal, “Ficaria surpreendido se este doente morresse durante o próximo ano?” é uma ferramenta importante, útil e fiável para esta identificação. Objetivo: determinar a prevalência de doentes adultos com necessidades paliativas internados em hospitais públicos. Como objetivos secundários, determinar o número de doentes referenciados para cuidados paliativos e identificar os motivos de não referenciação destes doentes. Materiais e Métodos: Estudo analítico, observacional e transversal, realizado no primeiro trimestre de 2015 em 11 hospitais do SNS. O instrumento de colheita de dados consistiu num questionário com caracterização demográfica e clinica, a pergunta surpresa relativa a 1 ano, 6 e 1 mês e, 15 dias, e 19 possíveis motivos para não referenciação dos doentes. O objetivo principal deste artigo é examinar o desempenho académico e profissional dos filhos únicos no início da idade adulta. Os dados utilizados para esse efeito provêm de um estudo em que várias centenas de rapazes e raparigas da comunidade foram seguidos desde o ensino básico até ao fim da vintena. Os resultados mostraram que os filhos únicos tinham completado, em média, mais anos de escolaridade do que os seus pares; mas análises mais detalhadas por nível de escolaridade revelaram que a superioridade dos primeiros se circunscrevia ao segmento do ensino obrigatório. Por sua vez, no que diz respeito à transição da escola para o mundo do trabalho verificou-se que os filhos únicos começam a trabalhar mais tarde e têm menos empregos do que os seus pares com irmãos. Nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significativa foi encontrada nas outras medidas de desempenho académico e profissional. Por fim, discutem-se possíveis implicações destes resultados para a educação dos filhos únicos na escola, em casa e na família.

A relação entre autocontrolo e desempenho académico ainda está insuficientemente estudada, particularmente, o papel desempenhado pelas diferentes componentes do autocontrolo nesse processo. A análise desta última questão constitui o principal objetivo do presente trabalho. Utilizou-se uma amostra de 448 participantes que foram seguidos desde o ensino básico até ao fim da terceira década de vida. Muitas das informações foram fornecidas pelos participantes numa entrevista individual; outras informações foram recolhidas junto dos professores do ensino básico. Os resultados mostraram um efeito moderado de algumas componentes do autocontrolo (v.g., preferência por atividades físicas, tomada de risco e a preferência por tarefas simples) nas medidas de desempenho académico, mesmo após se ter controlado estatisticamente o efeito das variáveis concorrentes. Seria interessante examinar, em trabalhos futuros, a generalização dos resultados a outros aspetos do desempenho académico e comprovar a robustez preditiva das dimensões do autocontrolo e a sua utilidade na promoção do sucesso escolar.

Background: cytochrome P450 aromatase enzyme (aromP450) is a key enzyme in the conversion of androgens into estrogens, a crucial step in the control of sexual differentiation in fish. Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two aromatase inhibitors (AIs) as an alternative method for the masculinization of red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.). Methods: Letrozole (LT) and Exemestane (EM) aromatase inhibitors were used at two experimental doses (25 and 100 mg/Kg). Five days post-hatching larvae (5 dph) were fed the inhibitors for 30 days (35 dph). The control treatments consisted of 17α metil testosterone (MT) at a concentration of 60 mg/ Kg (positive control) and food with 300 ml/Kg ethanol (negative control). On 60 dph, gonadal extraction of fishes was performed for histological processing and staining with hematoxylin-eosin for analysis. Results: there were no significant differences (p>0.05) between any compound and implemented doses with the controls in terms of larval survival. The chemical composition and daily mineral intake (DMI) of six macro (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorous, and chloride) and four microminerals (copper, iron, manganese, and zinc) were determined in four types of Portuguese breads (white wheat, maize, wheat/maize, and maize/rye breads). Samples were processed with microwave assisted digestion and mineral composition was determined with a high-resolution continuum-source atomic absorption spectrometer with flame and graphite furnace. Bread contributes to an equilibrated diet since it is rich in several minerals (0.21 mg/100 g of copper in wheat bread to 537 mg/100 g of sodium in maize/rye bread). Maize/rye bread presented the highest content of all minerals (except phosphorous and chloride), while the lowest levels were mainly found in wheat bread. Median sodium concentrations (422−537 mg/100 g) represented more than 28% of the recommended daily allowance, being in close range of the maximum Portuguese limit (550 mg/100 g). Maize/rye bread exhibited the highest DMI of manganese (181%), sodium (36%), magnesium (32%), copper (32%), zinc (24%), iron (22%), potassium (20%), and calcium (3.0%). A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) model based on the mineral content allowed the differentiation among white wheat, maize, and maize/rye bread. Zinc, magnesium, manganese, iron, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and calcium proved to be good chemical markers to differentiate bread compositions.

Methanolic extract of Suillus luteus was previously shown to inhibit proliferation of colon cancer cells with mutant p53. The effect of the same extract was further investigated here in a wildtype (wt) p53 non-small cell lung cancer cell line. Treatment with the extract increased the levels of p-H2A.X and the number of p-H2A.X foci/cell, indicating a possible increase in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage. Nevertheless, it did not cause alterations in wt p53 levels nor in programmed cell death. The extract caused inhibition of cellular proliferation and an increase in the % of cells in the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle. In conclusion, even though there is evidence of DNA damage being caused by this extract, there is no induction of cell death in this p53 wt cell line.

Implementing psychophysiological measures is a worthwhile approach for understanding human reaction to robot presence in terms of individual emotional state. This paper reviews the suitability of using psychophysiological assessment in human-robot interaction (HRI) research. A review of most common psychophysiological parameters used in a controlled laboratory setting is provided and advantages and challenges of their utilization in HRI experiments are described. Exemplar studies focused on the implementation of psychophysiological measures for the evaluation of the emotional responses of the participants to the robots’ presence are described. Based on the reviewed literature, the paper also describes the results of our own research experience to make the most of the emerged recommendations. We planned and performed a study aimed at implementing psychophysiological measurements for assessing the human response of two groups of older adults (Healthy vs. Mild Cognitive Impairment subjects) towards a telepresence robot. Finally, the paper provides a summary of lessons learned across the field in using psychophysiological measures in HRI studies.

La sabaleta Brycon henni, es un pez nativo del occidente colombiano importante para la seguridad alimentaria de las poblaciones ribereñas y para la pesca deportiva por sus característica combativas. El desarrollarse entre los 18 y 28ºC la convierte en una especie de cultivo promisoria. Un estudio citogenético a partir de células branquiales indicó diferentes complementos cromosómicos. Este trabajo aplicó la técnica de cultivo de linfocitos a muestras de sangre de adultos. Las muestras de sangre total fueron sembradas en 4 ml de medio de cultivo Ham-F12, suplementado con 0.5 ml de Suero Fetal Bovino y 0.7 ml del mitógeno Fitohemaglutinina M (Gibco®) durante 96 hr a 28ºC; 1.5 hr antes de la cosecha agregamos 100µl de Colcemid al 10% como factor antimitótico. Cada cultivo se incubó con 10 ml de solución hipotónica KCl 0.56% por 24 min a 37ºC, para continuar con tres fijaciones sucesivas, centrifugaciones y tinción Giemsa al 5%. Las mejores metafases fueron fotografiadas en microscopio, correspondientes a 6 machos y 8 hembras, indicando un número diploide de 50 cromosomas, clasificados en Metacéntricos (26M), Submetacéntricos (16SM) y Subtelocéntricos (8ST), para un número fundamental (NF) de 100 brazos. La tendencia evolutiva hallada fue de tipo B; no se encontraron cromosomas supernumerarios pero sí un primer par de cromosomas metacéntricos grandes, considerado marcador para el género Brycon, no determinante de heteromorfismo sexual. Estos resultados coinciden con los demás bricónidos investigados, en donde se podría considerar un ancestro común con un número cromosómico básico y cariotipos simétricos.Cytogenetic characterization of the neotropical fish Brycon henni (Pisces: Characidae). Brycon henni, is a native fish from Western Colombia is important as food and in sport fishing, and could be cultured in waters between 18 and 28ºC. A previous cytogenetic study in branchial cells indicated different chromosomal complements. Total blood samples were seeded in 4 ml Ham-F12 culture medium, supplemented with 0.5 ml Bovine Fetal Serum and 0.7 ml Phyitohemaglutinin M (Gibco®) during 96 hr at 28ºC; an antimitotic factor (100µl Colcemid® 10%) was added. Cells were incubated in 10 ml KCl hypotonic solution (0.56%) for 24 min at 37ºC, fixed in methanol; acetic acid (3: 1) three times, separated by centrifugations, extended drip, and the chromosomes slides were stained with 5% Giemsa (5%). The best metaphases (6 males and 8 females) were photographed. There was a diploid number of 50 chromosomes: Metacentrics (26M), Submetacentrics (16SM) and Subtelocentrics (8ST). The fundamental number is 100 arms. The evolutionary tendency is type B with no supernumerary chromosomes; a first pair of big metacentric chromosomes is characteristic for Brycon, while no chromosomic sexual heteromorfism was detected. A agenesia do corpo caloso é uma malformação cerebral com incidência estimada de 1:4000 que pode apresentar-se isolada ou associada a outras condições. O seu diagnóstico faz-se por métodos de neuroimagiologia, cuja disseminação levou ao diagnóstico em indivíduos assintomáticos. Apresentamos o caso de um homem de 49 anos, camionista, diabético. Recorreu ao serviço de urgência por parestesias da face e hemicorpo direito recorrentes nas últimas 24h. Ao exame neurológico apresentava hipostesia direita. Fez TC cerebral que mostrou agenesia do corpo caloso e ausência de lesões vasculares agudas. Foi avaliado por neurologia e assumida causa vascular do quadro. Teve alta antiagregado, orientado para consulta de neurologia. Destaca-se a Agenesia do Corpo Caloso por ter sido um achado acidental, que não justificava as queixas.

A plethora of research demonstrates that the processing of emotional faces is prioritised over non-emotive stimuli when cognitive resources are limited (this is known as 'emotional superiority'). However, there is debate as to whether competition for processing resources results in emotional superiority per se, or more specifically, threat superiority. Therefore, to investigate prioritisation of emotional stimuli for storage in visual short-term memory (VSTM), we devised an original VSTM report procedure using schematic (angry, happy, neutral) faces in which processing competition was manipulated. In Experiment 1, display exposure time was manipulated to create competition between stimuli. Participants (n = 20) had to recall a probed stimulus from a set size of four under high (150 ms array exposure duration) and low (400 ms array exposure duration) perceptual processing competition. For the high competition condition (i.e. 150 ms exposure), results revealed an emotional superiority effect per se. In Experiment 2 (n = 20), we increased competition by manipulating set size (three versus five stimuli), whilst maintaining a constrained array exposure duration of 150 ms. Here, for the five-stimulus set size (i.e. maximal competition) only threat superiority emerged. These findings demonstrate attentional prioritisation for storage in VSTM for emotional faces. We argue that task demands modulated the availability of processing resources and consequently the relative magnitude of the emotional/threat superiority effect, with only threatening stimuli prioritised for storage in VSTM under more demanding processing conditions. Our results are discussed in light of models and theories of visual selection, and not only combine the two strands of research (i.e. visual selection and emotion), but highlight a critical factor in the processing of emotional stimuli is availability of processing resources, which is further constrained by task demands.

Two alabaster sculptures dating from the late 18th century show an unknown superficial degradation characterised by striated erosion, whose cause seemed to be water condensation or, alternatively, rain water. To test these two hypotheses, accelerated aging tests were performed on alabaster samples, and the morphology of the degradation layer and its composition were characterised. The results suggest that the condensation conditions were the main cause of the alteration.

Relato parcial de uma pesquisa realizada pela Secretária de Estado da Saúde em parceria com o UNICEF, intitulado de Diagnóstico Matemo-lnfantil cio Estado de Sergipe. Nesta pesquisa as autoras realizam uma abordagem parcial sobre a saúde das mulheres em idade fértil. Objetivo: Medir por amostragem a nível estadual os indicadores: estado civil, idade da menarca, início da vida sexual, gravidez, abortos, prevenção do câncer cérvico-uterino e mama, anticoncepção e utilização dos serviços de saúde. Os resultados foram coletados através da aplicação de um formulário estruturado, abrangendo variáveis préconcepcionais, biológicas e sociais. Os dados obtidos fornecem subsídios para ampla discussão sobre a saúde das mulheres em Sergipe.
