In recent years, interest in finding alternatives for the evaluation of mobility has increased. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) stand out for their portability, size, and low price. The objective of this study was to examine the accuracy and repeatability of a commercially available IMU under controlled conditions in healthy subjects. A total of 36 subjects, including 17 males and 19 females were analyzed with a Wiva Science IMU in a corridor test while walking for 10 m and in a threadmill at 1.6 km/h, 2.4 km/h, 3.2 km/h, 4 km/h, and 4.8 km/h for one minute. We found no difference when we compared the variables at 4 km/h and 4.8 km/h. However, we found greater differences and errors at 1.6 km/h, 2.4 km/h and 3.2 km/h, and the latter one (1.6 km/h) generated more error. The main conclusion is that the Wiva Science IMU is reliable at high speeds but loses reliability at low speeds.

Therefore, it can be related to musculoskeletal and orthopaedic problems, particularly in the foot status, that are linked to a negative effect on overall health, mobility and social function. Objective The aim was to analyse the impact of foot health and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease and people without Parkinson's disease, with normalised reference scores, in the light of the values recorded with regard to foot health status and overall health. Material and methods This is a prospective case-control investigation. A sample of Parkinson's patients (n = 62) including 24 men and 38 women was recruited, and foot HQoL was measured using the Foot Health Status Questionnaire Spanish (Sp_FHSQ). Results The PD group recorded lower levels of foot health quality of life (HQoL) with lower scores on the Sp_FHSQ in general foot health, general health, physical activity, social capacity and vigour sub-scales. Regarding the rest of the sub-scales of the Sp_FHSQ, foot pain showed higher values in the PD group. Differences between the cases and control groups were analysed by means of a Mann–Whitney U test, showing statistical significance (P < 0.05). Conclusions PD presents an increased negative impact on foot health and quality of life which appears to be related to the chronic neurodegenerative disease. Background: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a condition defined by certain structural and functional deficits in the ankle joint complex after acute ankle injury. These deficits include pathological joint laxity, impaired postural control, and decreased strength and neuromuscular control. Purpose: To compare an eyes-open versus an eyes-closed balance training protocol in professional soccer players with CAI. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: For this study, we evaluated 19 players from 2 professional soccer teams in Madrid, Spain, all of whom had CAI. Participants from both teams were randomly assigned to an eyes-open group (n = 9) or eyes-closed group (n = 10). All participants completed 4 weeks of a supervised exercise protocol consisting of 3 sessions per week. Members of both the eyes-open and eyes-closed groups performed the same exercise protocol in the same order of execution. At the end of the protocol, the participants were assessed for pain (visual analog scale), ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (weightbearing lunge test), dynamic stability (Star Excursion Balance Test), and fear of movement and reinjury (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia). We compared results both before and after balance training and between the eyes-open and eyes-closed balance training groups. Results: Statistically significant differences were found for all of the assessed variables before and after balance training. No statistically significant differences were found between the eyes-closed and eyes-open groups on any variable. Conclusion: In the current study, eyes-closed balance training was not more effective than eyes-open balance training for CAI in professional soccer players.

Background: The analysis of the center of pressure (COP) is a method used to assess the foot function, but its reliability and repeatability have not been evaluated. COP can be altered by diverse conditions, like an excessive foot pronation. Low-Dye taping is commonly used for the treatment of symptoms related to an excessive pronation. To date, no study has evaluated the effects of the Low-Dye taping on COP and the duration of its effects. Thus, the main purpose of this manuscript was to assess the reliability and repeatability of the percentage of center of pressure locus area (%CLA) in feet with an excessive pronation, and secondarily, to assess that the Low-Dye taping modifies the %CLA during the immediate 48 h. Methods: An observational study of the reliability and repeatability of the %CLA variable with the Low-Dye taping in feet with excessive pronation was carried out. We used the EPS-Platform to evaluate the results of the variable in 6 conditions in a first session to evaluate the reliability of the results. We compared the results of the first session with the results in a second session to evaluate the repeatability of the results. We also carried out an ANOVA test to evaluate the changes that the taping produced in the variable between without taping with the rest of the 6 conditions. Results: For the %CLA, we observed a reliability greater than 0.80, measured by the interclass ratio index, both in the first session before taping, and in the second session before taping, thus being a repeatability variable. In the following times, with taping, at 10 min with tape, at 20 min with tape, at 24 h with tape and at 48 h with tape, an interclass ratio coefficient (ICC) higher than 0.80 was again obtained, thus being a reliable variable in all measurements made. The Low-Dye taping did not change %CLA from the time the tape was put in until 48 h (p-value = 1.000). Conclusions: The %CLA variable, in feet with excessive pronation, proved to be a reliable variable in all the measurements obtained before putting on the tape and during the following 48 h with the tape, and a repeatable variable. The Low-Dye taping did not change the %CLA from the time the tape was put in until 48 h.

Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disease and it is known to cause motor disturbances associated with musculoskeletal problems of the locomotor apparatus, and non-motor symptoms, that are believed to have a harmful effect on health, social functioning and mobility. The aim of this study was to evaluate depression in patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) compared to subjects who do not have it. The sample consisted of 124 participants (mean age 69.18 ± 9.12). Patients with PD were recruited from a center of excellence for Parkinson’s disease (cases n = 62) and healthy subjects without PD from their relatives and caregivers (control n = 62). The Spanish version of Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) scores and categories were collected. A clear statistically significant difference (p &lt, 0.05) was evident in the BDI scores between both groups. Parkinson’s patients presented worse results on the BDI = 15.48 ± 7.24 points compared to healthy subjects with BDI = 7.03 ± 6.99 points. Regarding BDI categories, there were statistically significant differences (p &lt, 0.001) for the greater BDI categories in the Parkinson’s group compared with healthy subjects. The depression represents an important potential risk for increased symptoms and negative impact among patients with PD compared with healthy subjects.

Tailor&rsquo, s bunion (TB) disease should be considered one of the foot injuries that causes disability in feet as well as general health. This case&ndash, control descriptive study investigated and contrasted the effects of different TB types in a sociodemographic population using the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ). A sample of 100 subjects with a mean age of 51.70 &plusmn, 17.78 years was recruited and requested to reply to a foot health survey. Results were self-reported. Subjects were scored. Participants with TB type III (TB3) registered lower scores for foot pain, foot function, footwear, and foot health. Physical activity and social capacity had higher scores, and vigor and general health were lower. A Kruskal&ndash, Wallis test was used for systematic differences between the FHSQ and different TB types. In all analyses, statistical significance was considered a p-value &lt, 0.05 with a 95% confidence interval. Statistically significant differences were found between all domains of the FHSQ and TB, except for the social capacity domain and vigor. The FHSQ is an important measurement tool in TB subjects, showing that factors such as sex, age, and footwear used throughout an individual&rsquo, s life are significantly associated with the development of TB3 and its influence on foot pain and foot health.

Worldwide, the burden of musculoskeletal disorders is increasing with great variations between-countries, which makes it difficult for policymakers to provide resources and adequate interventions in order to provide for their appropriate management. Thus, musculoskeletal disorders remain a public health problem and their incidence and trend is increasing for some specific conditions. Indeed, nutrients and biological biomarkers play a key role in the prognosis, diagnosis and health status of patients suffering from musculoskeletal conditions, being the main indicators for understanding biological processes as well as tailoring therapeutic interventions and nutritional programs in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, the purpose of this Special Issue was to provide an update on the state of the art, through current reviews as well as new insights and interventions, about the main role of nutrients and biomarkers in patients who suffer from musculoskeletal conditions from a multidisciplinary point of view.

[Abstract] OBJECTIVE: The goals of this study are to compare self-reported depression and anxiety in subjects diagnosed of asthma and healthy controls. METHODS: We designed a case-control study. Subjects were recruited using a consecutive sampling method from a single institution. Two groups were created: Asthma and healthy controls. Data of medical history and demographic background were collected from the medical record. Self-reported depression level was assessed using Beck's depression inventory (BDI). [Abstract] The Italian Self care diabetic foot questionnaire, (SDFQ-IT) is considered a dia-betic foot self-care evaluation tool with 16 questions for assessing diabetic foothealth disorders. To date, SDFQ has been validated in different languages, butan Italian version was lacking. Consequently, the purpose of this study was totranslate and validate the Italian version of the SDFQ-I T (SDFQ-IT). A suitablemethod was developed for the translation protocol and cross-cultural valida-tion from Spanish to Italian. Regarding the total marks from each sub-scale,agreement degrees, and confidence were analysed using the Cronbach's α andintraclass correlation coefficient (IC C), respectively. In addition, the mean± SD differences between pre and post-tests were calculated and completedusing the Bland and Altman distribution plots. Excellent agreement betweenthe two versions based on Cronbach's α was demonstrated. Three sub-scalesconsisting of knowledge of foot hygiene, the appropriate use of footwear andsocks, and podiatric self-care were added together to obtain the total score.Excellent retest reliability was shown for the total score. Test/retest reliabilitywas excellent for the self-care domain, and shock and shoe sub-scales. Therewere no significant differences among any domain (P > .05). There were nostatistically significant differences (P = .000) for the mean ± SDs differencesbetween pre-and post-tests (92.9200 ± 12.914) [89.25-96.59] and 92.9200± 13.012 [89.22-96.62] points, respectively). [Abstract] Lapidus arthrodesis is an established standard procedure to correct various footsurgery problems and hallux limitus, hypermobility of the first ray, halluxabductus valgus, and symptomatic lesser metatarsal. After decades, many fixa-tion methods in the orthopaedic surgery industry have been developed fordecreasing complications and improving this technique. The aim of this PRI-SMA compliant systematic review is to analyse the effectiveness of several lapi-dus plate systems in foot surgery. We have carried out the first systematicreview of the relevant published literature so as to systematically evaluate thescientific knowledge available now on this association, assigning predefined eli-gibility criteria. Fourteen studies were selected which had an overall of 738cases. The first tarsal metatarsal joint and hallux valgus were treated by theapplication of different types of Lapidus plate system. The optimal level of thefixation in these procedures is related with the type and system insertion placeof the plate with or without screw in each specific foot disease. There is an insuf-ficient number of studies about the effectiveness of the different types of Lapidusplate system in foot surgery, and there is a need to increase outcomes knowledgeon the level of the fixation, sort of the system, and insert place in foot surgery. [Abstract] Background: The lateral ankle ligament complex is the most frequently injured ligament secondary to strong ankle inversion movement during lateral ankle sprains (LAS). Among these injuries, anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) injury is the most frequent condition (present in 66-85% of such injuries). The purpose of this research was to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine the association between ankle tendon, ligament, and joint conditions and ATFL injuries. Methods: A case-control MRI study was carried out to compare the presence of ankle muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint conditions in patients with injured ATFLs (case group; n=25) and non-injured ATFLs (control group; n=25). Results: Achilles tendinopathy was present in 1/25 (4%) patients with injured ATFLs and 7/25 (28%) non-injured ATFL subjects (P=0.048). [Abstract] Reduced plantar foot sensation, postural instability, and gait difficulties are characteristic of Parkinson´s disease patients. A systematic review was carried out to determine the effect of the different types of insoles and shoes in these patients. Several databases were used to search for relevant articles reporting Parkinson´s disease patients undergoing treatment with any type of insole and footwear. All titles and abstracts were reviewed independently by two reviewers and the available data were extracted. The study eligibility criteria were any type of experimental study that included Parkinson’s disease patients treated with any type of insole or footwear. Eight studies were selected. Interventions used were textured insoles, footwear modifications, and habitual footwear. Three different outcomes were evaluated in each study: gait parameters, balance, and plantar sensation. According to the data available from this systematic review, the most important conclusion is that more controlled studies are needed in this research field. There are indications to suggest that textured insoles have positive effects on gait parameters, balance, and plantar sensation in Parkinson’s disease patients. Foot problems are highly prevalent conditions, being a frequent reason for medical and podiatric consultation. The aim of this study was to compare the differences of quality of life (QoL) related to foot health in people with and without the presence of foot problems. A case–control study was carried out in an outpatient centre, where a clinician recorded data related to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. In addition, self-reported data on foot health-related quality of life were recorded using the Spanish version of the Foot Health Status Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 498 participants (249 cases and 249 controls), with a median age of 30 years and an interquartile range of 23 years. The differences between the groups were statistically significant for gender, age, footwear, general health, foot health, and physical activity. Cases showed lower scores for the domain of footwear, physical activity and vitality compared to controls. Foot pathologies have a negative impact on quality of life related to foot health, and the domains of footwear, general health and physical activity seem to be the factors that are associated with the presence of alterations and foot deformities.

Aims To determine the fit factor and compliance with American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements of surgical masks and filtering respirators in male versus female nurses. Design A case–control gender study performed from 2016 to 2019. Methods A gender and age matched‐paired sample of 74 nurses was recruited and divided into men (n = 37) and women (n = 37). FFP3 filtering respirators and surgical masks fit factors were compared between male and female nurses by Mann–Whitney U tests. These measurements were tested to pass or fail according to the OSHA (≥100) and AIHA (≥50) criteria by Fisher exact tests for a 95% confidence interval. Results Global fit factor mean (standard deviation) was 2.86 (2.73) and 3.55 (6.34) for male and female nurses wearing surgical masks (p = .180), respectively, and nobody passed neither OSHA nor AIHA criteria (p = 1.00). Nevertheless, global fit factor were 30.82 (28.42) and 49.65 (43.04) for male and female nurses wearing FFP3 respirators, respectively, being significantly lower and worse in male nurses (p = .037). According to OSHA criteria, only 2.70% and 13.51% of male and females nurses, respectively, passed with non‐significant difference (p = .199), meanwhile 21.62% and 48.64% of male and female nurses, respectively, passed AIHA criteria showing significant differences (p = .027) wearing FFP3 respirators. Conclusions All male and female nurses wearing surgical masks failed to pass OSHA and AIHA criteria. Global fit factor of the proposed FFP3 filtering respirators was decreased and worse in male than female nurses. Impact Our recommendation is to avoid surgical masks use for protective purposes and use the proposed FFP3 filtering respirators among nurses. Each nurse should be fit tested for its own respirator with special caution in male nurses due to their lower fit factor achieved and most of them failed to pass OSHA and AIHA criteria, especially during COVID‐19 pandemic.

[Abstract] BACKGROUND: Frailty is a condition that can increase the risk of falls. In addition, foot disorders can negatively influence elderly people, thus affecting their condition of frailty. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether foot pain can influence a greater degree of frailty. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at the University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. METHODS: A sample older than 60 years (n = 52), including 26 healthy subjects and 26 foot pain patients, was recruited. Frailty disability was measured using the 5-Frailty scale and the Edmonton Frailty scale (EFS). RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in the total EFS score and in most of its subscales, according to the Mann-Whitney U test (P < 0.05). In addition, foot pain patients presented worse scores (higher 5-Frailty scores) than did healthy patients, regarding matched-paired subjects (lower EFS scores). With regard to the rest of the measurements, there were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). The highest scores (P < 0.001) were for fatigue on the 5-Frailty scale and the EFS, and for the subscale of independence function in EFS. CONCLUSIONS: These elderly patients presented impairment relating to ambulation and total 5-Frailty score, which seemed to be linked to the presence of frailty syndrome and foot disorders. [Abstract] OBJECTIVE: Clinical studies claim that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) accelerates tissue healing due to its high concentration of growth factors and that the combination with leukocytes improves the antimicrobial effect of the concentrate. Most of these studies obtained PRP using different separation systems, and few analyzed the content of the PRP used for treatment. This study characterized the composition of PRP and white blood cells (WBC) from a single donor produced by three commercially available PRP separation systems and two anticoagulated general analytical tubes. METHODS: Five patients donated 50 mL of blood, which was processed to produce PRP and WBC using three PRP concentration systems (i.e., Easy PRP Kit, GloPRP, and Wego) and two tubes for general analysis anticoagulated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citrate. Platelets and WBC in combination with their concentrates were analyzed by automated systems in a clinical laboratory. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the average concentrations of PRP platelets and WBC between GloPRP and the tubes for general analysis with EDTA and citrate; however, the Easy PRP Kit gave results much superior to the rest of the methods, especially comparing it with the Wego Kit, whose concentrates were especially low, even nonexistent for WBC. CONCLUSIONS: The Easy PRP Kit concentrates WBC-rich PRP, resulting in increased WBC concentrations, compared with low WBC-low PRP of GloPRP and general tube methods for EDTA and citrate analysis and the even lower concentration of PRP from the Wego Kit, with the absence of leukocytes

A literature review did not reveal any studies concerning the intramedullary transfer of the flexor digitorum brevis tendons (FDB) technique with a single longitudinal incision through the proximal phalanx of the toes. The main goal of this investigation was to demonstrate whether the FDB tendons of the toes are long enough to enable intramedullary transfer to the dorsal area of the proximal phalanx.We examined whether the technique would allow the surgeon to transfer the FDB tendons through the proximal phalanx of the toes. The technique transfers the FDB tendons through the proximal phalanx dorsal area of the toes using an intramedullary transfer of the FDB tendons. The intramedullary transfer of the FDB tendons was performed through a single dorsal incision.The FDB tendons for the second, third, and fourth toes were performed in 100% of the feet. No ruptures in any toe in which the surgical technique was performed was noted, and no proximal phalanges of the second, third, and fourth toes were fractured.Transfer of FDB tendons via the intramedullary approach of the proximal phalanx of the second, third, and fourth toes is possible. The FDB tendons have sufficient length for transfer via an intramedullary transfer and were carried out in 100% of the second toes. For a successful transfer, it is essential to perform a thorough resection of the extensor digitorum longus aponeurosis since it has expansions intimately attached to the plantar base of the proximal phalanx of the toe.

[Abstract] Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common and complex neurological problem. Gait abnormalities are frequent in PD patients, and this increases the risk of falls. However, little is known about foot deformities and footwear in this vulnerable population. Here we investigate whether patients with PD use an appropriate shoe size and know if they have foot deformities or alterations. Methodology: A study of a series of observational descriptive cases in a convenience sample (n = 53 patients) diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. One trained investigator evaluated foot and ankle health. The footwear and foot measurements were obtained using a Brannock device. Results: The podiatric examination and footwear examination detected a high presence of podiatric pathologies and inappropriate footwear. This has a negative impact on the quality of life of these patients. Conclusions: This research detected an elevated number of people with foot deformities or alterations. Moreover, a high proportion of participants with PD wear inadequate footwear (in length, width, or both).

BACKGROUND Home blood pressure monitoring has many benefits, even more so, in populations prone to high blood pressure, such as persons with diabetes. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this research was to validate the QardioArm mobile device in a sample of individuals with noninsulin-dependent type 2 diabetes in accordance with the guidelines of the second International Protocol of the European Society of Hypertension. METHODS The sample consisted of 33 patients with type 2 diabetes. To evaluate the validity of QardioArm by comparing its data with that obtained with a digital sphygmomanometer (Omron M3 Intellisense), two nurses collected diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate with both devices. RESULTS The analysis indicated that the test device QardioArm met all the validation requirements using a sample population with type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS This paper reports the first validation of QardioArm in a population of individuals with noninsulin-dependent type 2 diabetes. QardioArm for home monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate met the requirements of the second International Protocol of the European Society of Hypertension.

Purpose Lumbago, or low back pain (LBP), is a common musculoskeletal complaint among older adults that may also be associated with depression. The study objective was to investigate differences in Beck Depression Inventory depression symptoms scores among older adult patients with and without LBP. Design This was a case–control study. Methods A total of 152 older adult patients, recruited at an outpatient healthcare clinic (47 men, 105 women; 74.81 ± 6.9 years), were classified as having subacute LBP (n = 76) or non-LBP (n = 76) according to clinic records. Findings Beck Depression Inventory scores (mean ± SD) among LBP patients (10.93 ± 6.18) were significantly higher compared to the non-LBP group (7.62 ± 5.70; p = .000085), whose scores indicated no depression symptoms. Conclusion Subacute LBP may represent a potential risk for increased depression among older adults. Clinical Relevance Early detection of depression will assist rehabilitation nurses in prescribing the beneficial physical rehabilitation and exercise programs or provide the information and treatment recommendations to older adults with subacute LBP and their families. Subungual osteochondroma (SO) is an infrequent and non-malignant bone tumour of the distal phalanx, especially prominent in paediatric populations. The aim of this research was to describe a case series of paediatric feet with SO which received surgical treatments. The secondary purpose was to compare these descriptive data by sex distribution. Methods: Twenty-three paediatric feet with SO confirmed by clinical or radiological features received surgical treatment. Socio-demographic (age, sex, height, weight and BMI) and clinical features (side, location, tumour or pain presence, and nail lift before surgery, as well as recurrence and adverse effects at one month after intervention) were reported. Results: Regarding clinical features before intervention, the most frequent locations of SO were the first toe (86.8%) and the right lower limb (56.5%). In addition, the presence of the tumour, pain and nail lift showed a prevalence of 91.3%, 69.5% and 47% of the study sample, respectively. Considering clinical features at one month after intervention, the most frequent adverse effect was the pain presence (69.5%). In addition, one case (4.4%) presented ulceration. Only one patient (4.4%) suffered from recurrence with a new tumour. There were not statistically significant differences by sex distribution (p &gt, 0.05). Conclusions: This novel study showed that surgery treatment for SO in paediatric populations presented a very low recurrence degree with minor adverse effects and without differences by sex distribution. Thus, further randomized clinical trials should be carried out in order to determine the effectiveness of this intervention in this special population.

Background: Anatomic and histological landmarks of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) tendon insertion in the proximal nail matrix may be key aspects during surgery exposure in order to avoid permanent nail deformities. Objective: The main purpose was to determine the anatomic and histological features of the EDL&rsquo, s insertion to the proximal nail matrix of the second toe. Methods: A sample of fifty second toes from fresh-frozen human cadavers was included in this study. Using X25-magnification, the proximal nail matrix limits and distal EDL tendon bony insertions were anatomically and histologically detailed. Results: The second toes&rsquo, EDLs were deeply located with respect to the nail matrix and extended superficially and dorsally to the distal phalanx in all human cadavers. The second toe distal nail matrix was not attached to the dorsal part of the distal phalanx base periosteum. Conclusions: The EDL is located plantar and directly underneath to the proximal nail matrix as well as dorsally to the bone. The proximal edge of the nail matrix and bed in human cadaver second toes are placed dorsally and overlap the distal EDL insertion. These anatomic and histological features should be used as reference landmarks during digital surgery and invasive procedures.

Nowadays, the use of insoles in sport practice have been recognized to decrease the foot and lower limb injury patterns. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of four types of hardness insoles (HI) in the activity patterns of the hip and thigh muscles (HTM) in motoriders during motorcycling sport. The study was a crossover trial. Subjects were elite motoriders. The mean age was 33 &plusmn, 5.14 years. Electromyography (EMG) of hip and thigh muscles (HTM) data was registered via surface while subjects were riding on an elite motorcycle simulator. Subjects had to complete different tests with randomly hardest insoles (HI): 1: only polypropylene (58&deg, D Shore), 2: Polypropylene (58&deg, D Shore) with selective aluminium in hallux and metatarsal heads (60 HB Brinell hardness), 3: Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) (52&deg, A Shore), and finally, 4: Ordinary EVA (25&deg, A Shore) as the control. EMG patterns of the HTM, riding on an elite motorcycle simulator, showed the lowest peak amplitude with the insoles with polypropylene and selective aluminium. Using the hardest insoles in our study (selective aluminium) the EMG amplitude peaks decreased in all HTM.

BACKGROUND: Foot pain and paresthesia are common in cycling, due to plantar pressure and repetitive loading. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate the effect of foot insoles on plantar pressure of the foot in motorcycling, as well as self-reported comfort. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized crossover clinical trial. METHODS: A flexible foot pressure mat (GP MobilData WiFi® Gebiomized®) with different sizes was utilized. RESULTS: Maximum pressure values occurred predominantly in the hallux with 4.90 ± 1.19 N/cm2, followed by second and third metatarsal areas with 4.57 ± 0.73 N/cm2, followed by the first metatarsal area with 4.30 ± 0.96 N/cm2, and followed by the fourth and fifth metatarsal areas with 3.22 ± 0.89 N/cm2 when using the control foot insole and using aluminum foot insole, which reduces maximum pressure to 1.55 ± 0.34, 1.56 ± 0.75, 1.09 ± 0.43, and 1.07 ± 0.59 N/cm2, respectively ( p

BACKGROUND: This study determined if the body mass index, dynamic plantar-pressures, plantar surface contact-area, velocity of the centre of pressure (COP), gastrocnemius equinus, and gastrocnemius soleus equines are related to calcaneal apophysitis (Sever's disease) in athletic children. METHODS: This case-control study examined 106 boys enrolled in a soccer academy, including 53 with Sever's disease and 53 age-matched healthy controls. The dynamic average and maximum peak plantar-pressures, plantar surface contact-area, and velocity of the COP were evaluated with a digital pressure sensor platform. Goniometry was used to measure the ankle dorsiflexion range of motion and thereby identify gastrocnemius equinus and gastrocnemius soleus equinus. RESULTS: Participants with Sever's condition had significantly higher BMI and peak plantar-pressures (maximum and average) at the heel (Cohen's d > 3 for pressures) than the controls. Those with Sever's disease also had significantly slower velocity of the COP (Cohen's d > 3). Boys with Sever's disease were also 8 times more likely to have bilateral gastrocnemius equinus than disease controls. CONCLUSIONS: High heel plantar pressure and low velocity of COP are related to Sever's condition in boys, although it is not clear whether these factors predispose individuals to the disease or are consequences of the disease. Triceps surae (TS) and tibialis anterior (TA) activation patterns have not yet been studied under different types of sport shoes. We hypothesized that sports shoes may reduce the activity patterns of these muscles in relation to barefoot condition. Thus, our main aim was to evaluate the activity patterns of TS and TA muscles in healthy people during all gait phases using five types of sport shoes with respect to barefoot condition. A total sample of thirty healthy participants, mean age 36.20 ± 8.50, was recruited in a podiatry laboratory following an observational research design. During walking and running, electromyography signals were recorded from TS and TA muscles using surface electrodes in the following experimental situations: 1.) barefoot, 2.) minimalist, 3.) pronated control, 4.) air chamber, 5.) ethyl-vinyl-acetate and 6.) boost. The TS and TA showed significant reductions (P < 0.05) in the peak amplitude of different sport shoes types with respect to the barefoot condition in different phases of the gait cycle during walking and running. Nevertheless, the boost sport shoe produced statistically significant increases in the peak amplitude of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle in comparison with the barefoot condition in the midstance phase of the gait cycle during running (P = 0.047). In addition, the pronation control and air chamber sport shoes produced statistically significant increases in the peak amplitude of the TA muscle with respect to the barefoot condition in the contact phase of the gait cycle (P = 0.021; P = 0.013), respectively, during running. Despite TS and TA muscles activity patterns seem to be reduced using different sport shoes types with respect to the barefoot condition in different phases of the gait cycle during walking and running, some sport shoes may increase this muscular activity in specific phases of the gait cycle during running. Primary hyperhidrosis (PH) is a common pathological condition related to excessive sweating. It may be associated with depression. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to analyse and compare depression scores between subjects without PH (degree-I) and patients with PH (degrees-II, -III, and -IV). The secondary aim was to describe and compare depression scores among subjects with different PH degrees (I-without perceptible perspiration, II-tolerable perspiration, III-hardly tolerable perspiration, and IV-intolerable perspiration). A sample of 100 subjects with a median age of 23.00 +/- 6.00 years was recruited from an outpatient medical centre, where medical history data were registered. The degree of PH was determined using the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale from degrees I (mild) to IV (very severe). The depression scores were analysed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Statistically significant differences (P < 0.001) were observed for higher BDI scores in the patients with PH (degrees II, III, and IV) than in those without PH (degree-I). Kruskal-Wallis tests demonstrated statistically significant differences for BDI scores (P < 0.001), with higher values for degree-III with respect to degree-I and degree-IV with respect to degree-I. Patients with a greater degree (especially III/IV) of PH showed higher BDI scores compared with subjects without PH. Purpose The aim of this descriptive study was to determine whether people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) wear adequately fitting footwear. Design This observational study was carried out in a health center between January and December 2014 in the state of A Coruna, Spain. Method A total of 166 patients (47 men, 119 women) completed all stages of the research process. A validated Brannock Device was used to record foot and shoe length and width. Findings Only 64 (38.55%) participants wore shoes that met the needs and requirements of their feet, and 98 (59.03%) participants wore the incorrect shoe size, at least in one foot. Conclusions Many patients with RA often wear shoes that are too narrow for their foot. Assessing the proper footwear fit is an important part of the clinical foot examination. Clinical relevance Early detection of inappropriate shoe size in patients with RA allows rehabilitation nurses to optimize foot health.

The aims of this research were to evaluate and compare the effect in a matched sample of patients with type II and type I diabetes scores using a specific quality‐of‐life (QoL) tool related to overall and foot health (Foot Health Status Questionnaire [FHSQ]). A sample of 62 patients with an age median of 59.00 ± 19.00 y were divided into type I (n = 31) and type II (n = 31) diabetes groups. Socio‐demographics data include: (1) age, (2) gender, (3) body mass index, (4) professional activity, (5) study level, and (6) civil status. The FHSQ was used to evaluate foot (pain, function, footwear, and general health section I domains) and overall (general health, social capacity, physical activity, and vigour section II domains) health related to QoL. Differences between groups were assessed by means of a t test or Mann‐Whitney U test for independent samples. There were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) for any socio‐demographic data. Regarding the FHSQ section II of the specific foot health‐related QoL, the only statistically significant differences (P = 0.042) were observed for the general foot health showing a QoL impairment (lower median ± interquartile range) in patients diagnosed with type II diabetes (60.00 ± 60.00 points) compared with patients who suffered from type I diabetes (25.00 ± 72.50 points). The other domains did not show any statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). Patients with type II diabetes present a negative impact on the specific foot health‐related QoL compared with patients who suffered from type I diabetes. Peroneus longus and brevis (PLB) disorders are commonly in people with lateral ligamentous instability, ankle pain, lateral hindfoot pain and structures of the proximal compartment of the lower legs and their muscle activity is believed to be influenced by different footwear types. The proposal of this research is to evaluate the effects of five types of footwear with respect to the barefoot condition and analyze the activity patterns of PLB muscles in healthy subjects during the gait cycle. Methods Thirty healthy subjects were recruited in a laboratory in this cross-sectional research design. While walking, electromyography (EMG) activity was measured from PLB via surface electrodes in six experimental conditions: 1) barefoot, 2) minimalist, 3) pronated control, 4) air chamber, 5) ethyl-vinyl-acetate (EVA) and 6) boost. The aim of the present study is to examine the impact absorption mechanism of the foot for different strike patterns (rearfoot, midfoot and forefoot) using a continuum mechanics approach. A three-dimensional finite element model of the foot was employed to estimate the stress distribution in the foot at the moment of impact during barefoot running. The effects of stress attenuating factors such as the landing angle and the surface stiffness were also analyzed. We characterized rear and forefoot plantar sole behavior in an experimental test, which allowed for refined modeling of plantar pressures for the different strike patterns. Modeling results on the internal stress distributions allow predictions of the susceptibility to injury for particular anatomical structures in the foot.

Background Health care institutions include workers who must operate in accordance with the requirements of the position, even though there are psychosocial influences that can affect the stability of the worker. Aims To analyze the organizational culture of the team of professionals who work in the mental health network. Method A qualitative methodology was used to assess a sample of 55 mental health professionals who have been practicing for at least 5 years. Results “Team” was the overall topic. The subtopics within “Team” were: getting along in the unit, getting along with the patient, personal resources for dealing with patients, adaptive resources of team members and, resources that the team uses in their group activities. Conclusion It was observed that the team does not work with a common objective and needs an accepted leader to manage the group. The definition and acceptance of roles can result in conflict. By increasing the skill level of each worker, the multidisciplinary team would be more collaborative.

Background Customized foot orthoses (CFO) have been widely accepted to reduce the frequency of foot problems and postural disorders. The purpose of the research was to compare the influence of CFO utilization on the venous status among healthy females and males. Methods This was a quasi-experimental study (NCT03329430), which included 20 healthy subjects that completed all the stages of the process. The subjects showed an age mean of 20.00 ± 1.62 years and were recruited in a foot and ankle specialist center. Self-reported data were medical records and venous function which were evaluated by plethysmography with or without utilization of CFO. Results A sample of 40 feet was studied, showing statistically significant differences between venous filling time (P < 0.001) and in the ejection fraction (P < 0.001) with CFO utilization versus without use of CFO. Conclusions Healthy people who utilize CFO evidenced an increased venous return in the feet. Background: Temporary Kirschner wire fixation (K-wire) is a widely used, low-cost fixation method for the correction of hammertoe deformity. Reported complications associated with K-wires prompted the development of new implants over the past decade. However, there is a lack of literature on comparative studies analyzing functional outcomes using validated questionnaires. The purpose of this study was to analyze functional outcomes in patients who had undergone proximal interphalangeal joint fusion using 2 types of intramedullary implant, the Smart Toe and the TenFuse, and to compare them with the outcomes in patients treated with standard K-wire fixation. Methods: A retrospective review of operative hammertoe correction by a single surgeon was performed in 96 patients followed for more than 12 months. Functional outcome was assessed using the Foot Function Index (FFI), the Short Form 36 (SF-36), and the 10-point visual analog scale (VAS) validated questionnaires. Complications and fusion rates were also evaluated. Several patients in the study underwent corrections in different toes; thus, a total of 186 toes were included in the study. From these, 65 toes (34.9%) were treated with K-wire fixation, 94 (50.5%) with Smart Toe titanium implant, and 27 (14.5%) with TenFuse allograft implant. Results: No statistically significant differences in functional outcome and incidence of complications were observed among the 3 fixation groups, although the 2 intramedullary implants were associated with greater fusion rates and patient satisfaction. Breakage of the Smart Toe implant was significantly higher than that of the other fixations, with 10.6% of implants breaking within the first year postoperatively. SF-36 and VAS scores decreased 12 months after surgery for the 3 types of fixation, with no statistically significant differences observed. Conclusion: The use of Smart Toe and TenFuse implants provided operative outcomes comparable to those obtained using a K-wire fixation and slightly better patient satisfaction. Our results suggest that utilization of these implants for hammertoe correction was a reasonable choice that provided good alignment, pain reduction, and improved function at final follow-up. However, they are more expensive than K-wires. For this reason, in-depth cost-benefit studies would be required to justify their use as a standard treatment. Gender-based violence is considered a serious social and public health problem. Overcoming this situation implies a process that results in the favorable biopsychosocial rehabilitation of the resilience of women. The objective of this study was to analyze the tools, resources and personal and psychosocial mechanisms used by women survivors of gender-based violence. The design was an interpretative phenomenology. It was carried out with 22 women who have overcome gender-based violence. Data were collected through personal interviews and narration. The results were grouped into four themes: “Process of violence”, “Social resources for coping and overcoming GBV”, “Personal tools for coping and overcoming GBV” and “Feelings identified, from the abuse stage to the survival stage”. Several studies concluded that overcoming abuse is influenced by the women’s social network, and it can be the action of these people determining their survival to gender violence. Despite the recognized usefulness of these available resources, it would be desirable to strengthen them in order to be able to drive more women toward survival, assuming a strengthening of coping and overcoming, without forgetting the importance of other support mechanisms, such as their family and group therapies.

Objectives: Our primary aim was to develop a transcultural adaptation of a cycling questionnaire using the Borg CR-10 scale as a tool to describe the discomfort among motorcyclists during the riding process in two trial sessions. Design: A transcultural adaptation and descriptive cross-sectional study. Settings: Jarama motorcycling circuit (Madrid, Spain). Participants: The participants were riders recorded across in a final motorcycling race. Interventions: The study design is based in two tools, the adapted Motorcyclist Questionnaire (MQ-21) with 21 items and Borg CR10 Scale&reg, was used to determine discomfort level during motorcycling performance. The translation procedure, reliability, and reproducibility were performed. Results: All items showed an almost perfect intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (ICC = 0.909&ndash, 1.00), except for item 9 (ICC = 0.881). Almost perfect internal consistency was shown for the total score (Cronbach &alpha, = 0.899). No systematic differences existed among test and retest in all items (p &gt, 0.05) according to Bland&ndash, Altman plots. Respondents experienced slight discomfort on their body parts during the test-retest 1 h riding process. Foot discomfort was scored as 1.20, being the eighth of the 12 studied body parts. Conclusions: Internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the MQ-21 questionnaire were excellent and this questionnaire may be recommended to be used in motorcycling sports and clinical settings to evaluate the discomfort.

Background: This study aimed to adapt the Spanish version of the Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students (ASNS) (shorter form) instrument for Spanish podiatry students, labeling the new tool as the Spanish version of Assessment of Stress in Podiatry Students (ASPS). The adaptation for reliability and repeatability included performing the transcultural adaptation process and examining the repeatability and reliability of ASPS when used in a different language. Methods: An internationally recommended translation procedure was used to adapt transculturally this tool. The instrument&rsquo, s test&ndash, retest reliability was evaluated in two sessions that were 10 days apart. Results: After considering each domain&rsquo, s total score, the reliability and internal consistency were analyzed with Cronbach&rsquo, s &alpha, and intraclass correlation coefficient for a 95% confidence interval. Good internal consistency was reported according to total score (&alpha, = 0.8626) and each one of the six domains: (1) the practical activities performance domain showed a Cronbach&rsquo, of 0.8684, (2) professional communication domain, &alpha, = 0.8765, (3) time management domain, &alpha, = 0.8832, (4) environment domain, &alpha, = 0.8974, (5) professional education domain, &alpha, =0.873, and (6) theoretical activity domain, &alpha, = 0.8787. Test&ndash, retest reliability, by paired test of Wilcoxon, was not significant, showing that there were not differences between domain scores (p &ge, 0.05). Lastly, visual distributions of Bland and Altman plots did not provide differences between domains and total scores. Conclusions: The Spanish version of the ASPS showed good repeatability, reliability and acceptability to measure stress parameters for podiatry students.

Background Home blood pressure monitoring has many benefits, even more so, in populations prone to high blood pressure, such as persons with diabetes. Objective The purpose of this research was to validate the QardioArm mobile device in a sample of individuals with noninsulin-dependent type 2 diabetes in accordance with the guidelines of the second International Protocol of the European Society of Hypertension. Methods The sample consisted of 33 patients with type 2 diabetes. To evaluate the validity of QardioArm by comparing its data with that obtained with a digital sphygmomanometer (Omron M3 Intellisense), two nurses collected diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate with both devices. Results The analysis indicated that the test device QardioArm met all the validation requirements using a sample population with type 2 diabetes. Conclusions This paper reports the first validation of QardioArm in a population of individuals with noninsulin-dependent type 2 diabetes. QardioArm for home monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate met the requirements of the second International Protocol of the European Society of Hypertension.

Background: The triceps surae muscle has been identified with propulsion during running gait, and typical heel-lift orthotics (THOs) have been used to treat some sports injuries of this structural-biomechanical unit. The effects of a novel propulsion heel-lift orthotic (PHO) on surface electromyography (EMG) activity of the gastrocnemius during a full cycle of running have yet to be tested. Purpose/Hypothesis: We aimed to assess EMG changes in gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis muscle activity when wearing THOs, PHOs, or neutral sports shoes only (SO) during running. We hypothesized that EMG activity of the triceps surae muscle would be lower for PHOs than THOs or SO during running. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 26 healthy, regular recreational runners of both sexes (mean age, 33.58 ± 6.02 years) with a neutral Foot Posture Index and rearfoot strike pattern were recruited to run on a treadmill at 9 km/h using aleatory THOs of 6 and 9 mm, PHOs, and SO while EMG activity of the gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis muscles was recorded over a 30-second period. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated to assess reliability. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient values indicated near perfect reliability, ranging from 0.801 for 6-mm THOs to 0.959 for SO in the gastrocnemius lateralis muscle. EMG activity of the gastrocnemius lateralis muscle was greater for PHOs (25.516 ± 4.780 mV) than for SO (23.140 ± 4.150 mV) ( P < .05), but EMG activity of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle did not show any statistically significant difference between conditions (23.130 ± 2.980 mV vs 26.315 ± 2.930 mV, respectively) ( P = .3). Conclusion: A novel PHO may increase muscle activity of the gastrocnemius lateralis during a full cycle of running gait; consequently, its prescription to treat triceps surae muscle injuries is cautioned. Clinical Relevance: The prescription of novel PHOs could increase EMG activity, which has not been previously described.

New trends in ultrasound imaging are focused on exploration of morphology and muscle quality. The main goal of the study was to evaluate the first-order descriptor and echostructure of lumbar multifidus at the L4 vertebral level in athletes with and without chronic lumbopelvic pain (CLPP). A case-control study was performed in 15 semiprofessional athletes with CLPP and 15 without (healthy athletes). Lumbar multifidus echointensity and echovariation were measured for muscle quality assessment. Echostructure was used to evaluate lumbar multifidus cross-sectional area (CSA) at resting and during muscle contraction, respective differences during both phases (CSADif.), activation patterns, and thoracolumbar fasciae morphology and thickness. Significant differences with a large effect size were observed in quantitative data from CLPP and healthy athletes for left lumbar multifidus CSADif. and thoracolumbar fasciae morphology. Categorical data showed statistically significant differences with a small-to-moderate effect size for lumbar multifidus activation pattern and thoracolumbar fasciae morphology. Athletes with CLPP showed a reduced CSA difference between lumbar multifidus contraction and at resting and higher disorganization of thoracolumbar fasciae morphology compared to healthy athletes. These findings suggest the importance of dynamic exploration of the lumbar region and connective tissue in sports performance and injury prevention. Gastrocnemius muscles present a high prevalence for injury in athletes. These muscles are a region in which myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) frequently develops. Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by the presence of active myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). This study compared different personality and anxiety symptoms between athletes with and without active MTrPs in the gastrocnemius. A case-control study was conducted in an outpatient clinic. Athletes who performed moderate or vigorous physical activity according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were included. Fifty paired-matched athletes with and without active MTrPs in their gastrocnemius muscles (n = 25 in each group) were recruited. Different personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, psychoticism, and sincerity) and anxiety (state and trait) were evaluated by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) with an effect size from moderate to large (d = 0.75-1.29) were found for greater neuroticism and sincerity traits in addition to state and trait anxiety in athletes with gastrocnemius MPS compared with healthy controls. In conclusion, athletes with gastrocnemius active MTrPs exhibited higher neuroticism and anxiety symptoms compared with healthy athletes. Mental health may play a key role in athletes with myofascial pain, and future studies should be performed to determine whether neuroticism-related and anxiety-related psychological care could be a key intervention in athletes with gastrocnemius active MTrPs to improve athletic performance and rehabilitation or prevent injuries.

Background: Hallux valgus (HV) has been previously associated with psychological disorders. Thus, the purposes of this study were to associate kinesiophobia and pain intensity with HV deformity degrees, as well as predict kinesiophobia and pain intensity based on HV deformity and demographic features. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out recruiting 100 subjects, who were divided into HV deformity degrees, such as I-no HV (n = 25), II-mild (n = 25), III-moderate (n = 25), and IV-severe (n = 25) HV. Kinesiophobia total and domains (activity avoidance and harm) scores and levels were self-reported by the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK-11). Pain intensity was self-reported by the numeric rating scale (NRS). Results: Statistically significant differences (p &lt, 0.01, &eta, 2 = 0.132&ndash, 0.850) were shown for between-groups comparison of kinesiophobia total and domain scores (activity avoidance and harm) and levels, as well as pain intensity among HV deformity degrees. Post hoc comparisons showed statistically significant differences with a large effect size (p &lt, 0.05, d = 0.85&ndash, 4.41), showing higher kinesiophobia symptoms and levels and pain intensity associated with greater HV deformity degrees, especially for III-moderate and/or IV-severe HV deformity degrees versus I-no HV and/or II-mild deformity degrees. Both statistically significant prediction models (p &lt, 0.05) for kinesiophobia (R2 = 0.300) and pain intensity (R2 = 0.815) were predicted by greater HV deformity degree and age. Conclusions: Greater kinesiophobia symptoms and levels and pain were associated with higher HV deformity degrees, especially severe and/or moderate HV with respect to no and/or mild HV. The kinesiophobia and pain intensity were predicted by greater HV deformity degree and age.

Background: Functional hallux limitus (FHL) refers to dorsiflexion hallux mobility limitation when the first metatarsal head is under loading conditions but not in the unloaded state. The goal of the study was to evaluate 3 common manual tests (Buell, Dananberg, and Jack tests) for assessing first metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) mobility and determining the normal values needed to detect FHL, and clarify the signs and symptoms associated with this pathology. Methods: Forty-four subjects were included in this reliability study. Subjects were divided into healthy control (non-FHL) and FHL groups according to the Buell first MPJ limitation values in addition to signs and symptoms derived from the literature. In both groups, we measured the mobility in the Buell, Dananberg, and Jack tests using a goniometer; their intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), sensitivities, and specificity indexes were also calculated. Results: All techniques showed high reliability across measurement trials with ICCs ranging from 0.928 to 0.999. The optimal mobility grades for predicting FHL were 68.6 ± 3.7 degrees, 21 ± 5.9 degrees, and 25.5 ± 6.5 degrees (mean±SD) ( P < .05) for the Buell, Dananberg, and Jack tests, respectively. Conclusion: Normal and limited mobility values were established for assessing FHL using each technique. The sensitivity and specificity data were perfect for the Dananberg and Jack tests, thus identifying these tests as specific and valid tools for use in FHL diagnosis. Background: The diagnostic of flat and crest-shaped of first metatarsal heads has been associated as an important risk factor for hallux deformities, such as hallux valgus and hallux rigidus. The rounded form of the first metatarsal head on the dorsoplantar radiograph of the foot has been believed to be associated with the development of hallux valgus. Purpose: The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of tube angulation on the distortion of first metatarsal head shape, and verify the real shape of the metatarsal head in anatomical dissection after an X-ray has been taken. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, from December 2016 to June 2019, 103 feet from embalmed cadavers were included. We performed dorsoplantar radiograph tube angulation from 0&deg, until 30&deg, every 5&deg, on all specimens, then, two observers verified the shape of the first metatarsal head in the radiographs and after its anatomic dissection. Kappa statistics and McNemar Bowker tests were used to assess and test for intra and interobserver agreement of metatarsal shape. Results: We calculated the intraobserver agreement, and the results showed that the first metatarsal head is distorted and crested only when the angle of the X-ray beam is at 20&deg, of inclination (p &lt, 0.001). The interobserver agreement showed good agreement at 0&deg, 5&deg, 10&deg, 20&deg, and 25&deg, and was excellent at 30&deg, (p &lt, 0.001). Conclusion: All of the studies that we identified in the literature state that there are three types of shapes of the first metatarsal head and relate each type of head to the diagnosis of a foot pathology, such as hallux valgus or hallux rigidus. This study demonstrates that there is only the round-shaped form, and not three types of metatarsal head shape. Therefore, no diagnoses related to the shape of the first metatarsal head can be made.

Background: Haemophilia is considered as a chronic genetic disease related with alteration in coagulation mechanism which affects to health related quality of life (HQoL). Purpose: The goal compared marks of HQoL, in haemophiliacs with respect non haemophilic subjects. Methods: A population of 74 subjects, were recruited from association of haemophilic illness separated in haemophilic subjects (n = 37) and no haemophilic (n = 37). For subjects who suffered haemophilia were enlisted from the association of haemophilic illness after a seminar of 45 minutes to them and to their relatives about foot health. Control subjects, were recruited from their relatives who live with the patient. The marks of the Foot Health Status Questionnaire Spanish S_FHSQ sub-scales were recompiled. Objective To determine the influence of depression symptoms and levels in athletes with gastrocnemius myofascial pain with respect to healthy athletes. In addition, to determine a prediction model for kinesiophobia symptoms based on descriptive data and gastrocnemius myofascial pain presence. Design Secondary case-control. Setting Outpatient clinic. Participants A sample of 50 athletes was recruited and divided into athletes with chronic gastrocnemius myofascial pain (n = 25) and healthy athletes (n = 25). Main outcome measurements Depression symptoms scores and levels were self-reported by athletes using the Beck Depression Inventory – II (BDI-II). Results Statistically significant differences for depression symptoms scores (P = 0.011) with a moderate effect size (d = 0.77) and depression levels (P = 0.036) were found between both groups showing greater depression symptoms and levels in athletes with gastrocnemius myofascial pain (13.00 ± 13.50 points; range from 0 to 28 points) versus healthy athletes (4.00 ± 7.00 points; range from 0 to 19 points). Higher depression symptoms scores of BDI-II were only predicted by the presence of gastrocnemius myofascial pain in athletes (R2 = 0.134; β = +5.360; F[1,48] = 7.428; P = 0.009). Conclusions Greater depression symptoms and levels were exhibited for athletes with gastrocnemius myofascial pain compared to healthy athletes. Background and Objectives: Foot problems may be considered to be a prevalent condition and impact the health-related quality of life (QoL). Considering these Spanish-validated tools, the Foot Health Status questionnaire (FHSQ) may provide a health-related QoL measurement for specific foot conditions and general status. To date, the domains of the FHSQ and Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) have not been correlated. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to correlate the domains of the FHSQ and SF-36 in patients with foot problems. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out. A sample of 101 patients with foot problems was recruited. A single researcher collected descriptive data, and outcome measurements (FHSQ and SF-36) were self-reported. Results: Spearman’s correlation coefficients (rs) were calculated and categorized as weak (rs = 0.00–0.40), moderate (rs = 0.41–0.69), or strong (rs = 0.70–1.00). In all analyses, statistical significance was considered with a p-value &lt, 0.01 with a 99% confidence interval. Statistically significant differences (p &lt, 0.01) were found between all domains of FHSQ and SF-36, except for the mental health domain of the SF-36 with foot pain, foot function, and general foot health of the FHSQ, as well as between the vitality domain of the SF-36 and the general foot health domain of the FHSQ (p &gt, 0.01). Statistically significant correlations varied from week to strong (rs = 0.25–0.97). The strongest correlations (p &lt, 0.001) were found for physical activity and physical function (rs = 0.94), vigor and vitality (rs = 0.89), social capacity and social function (rs = 0.97), and general health domains of the SF-36 and FHSQ. Conclusions: The FHSQ and SF-36 showed an adequate concurrent validity, especially for the physical activity or function, vigor or vitality, social capacity or function, and general health domains. Nevertheless, the mental health domain of the SF-36 should be considered with caution.

Background The process of breastfeeding is linked to intergenerational influences based on attitudes and messages of grandmothers about their own experience, and this can reinforce or interfere with the experiences of future mothers in breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to explore the meanings transmissible to the next generation of nursing mothers, based on the experiences of grandmothers. Methods We report the findings of an interpretive phenomenological qualitative research based on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. In-depth interviews were conducted in Madrid with 17 participants who breastfed before the age of 35 and more than 8 years ago (to ensure the settlement of transmissible meanings in remote memory). Data were analyzed by interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Findings Two thematic categories were identified: “Breastfeeding: life experiences” and “Breastfeeding: body and mind process”, which show that mothers want to convey the need for a balance that allows maintaining the role of women outside of stereotypes but that is also compatible with the rhythm of life, giving new meanings to attachment, weaning, and modesty. Conclusions: Meanings that future grandmothers wish to transmit to the next generation of nursing mothers are related to the search for a satisfactory experience for the mother, who must make an adjustment in her life, freeing herself of inflexible messages about attachment and the maternal role. Practical implications Strategies to promote breastfeeding and care for nursing mothers can improve the impact of trying to understand the meanings that are transmitted by the grandmothers in the family environment.
