Abstract

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome is a rare entity characterized by abnormal dilatation of the trachea and main bronchi (tracheobronchomegaly). Alcaligenes xylosoxidans is a non fermenting gram-negative pathogen common in extra-and intra-hospital environment, which may be related to immunosuppression states. We describe the case of a 75 years old male, ex-smoker with moderate functional obstruction, chronic respiratory failure and chronic colonization by Pseudomonas aeuriginosa. He had an infectious exacerbation of his disease, reason that previously required several hospital admissions. The patient was treated with antibiotics and his evolution was favourable with negativization in cultures of the pathogen. This is the first description of the isolation of Alcaligenes xylosoxidans as a cause of respiratory infection in a patient with Mounier-Kuhn syndrome.

Abstract

Molybdenum and tungsten complexes containing the pypzH (3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole) ligand as a chelating bidentate are prepared: [Mo(CO)(4)(pypzH)], cis-[MoBr(η(3)-allyl)(CO)(2)(pypzH)], cis-[MoCl(η(3)-methallyl)(CO)(2)(pypzH)], [MI(2)(CO)(3)(pypzH)] (M = Mo, W) from [Mo(CO)(4)(NBD)] or the adequate bis(acetonitrile) complexes. The deprotonation of the molybdenum allyl or methallyl complexes affords the bimetallic complexes [cis-{Mo(η(3)-allyl)(CO)(2)(μ(2)-pypz)}](2) or [cis-{Mo(η(3)-methallyl)(CO)(2)(μ(2)-pypz)}](2) (μ(2)-pypz = μ(2)-3-(2-pyridyl-κ(1)N)pyrazolate-2κ(1)N). The allyl complex was subjected to an electrochemical study, which shows a marked connection between both metallic centres through the bridging pyridylpyrazolates.

105. Prevalence and magnitude of body weight and image dissatisfaction among women in dietetics majors

Abstract

Some authors have suggested that body weight dissatisfaction may be high in students majoring in dietetics. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the extent of body weight and image dissatisfaction in a sample of women in dietetics major. Additionally, predictors of magnitude of body weight dissatisfaction were analyzed. Participants were 62 volunteers with normalweight whose mean age was 21.87 +/- 1.89 years old (non-random sample). The assessment instruments included anthropometric measurements, a somatomorphic matrix test and an eating disorders inventory (EDI-2). Data were analyzed using SPSS vs. 15.0. A larger proportion of students chose an ideal body weight lower than actual weight (67.7%) and body image with less body fat and more muscle mass than actual values (56.4%). The magnitude of body weight dissatisfaction was associated with muscle mass and body fat dissatisfaction, and with the subscale of EDI-2 "body dissatisfaction". So, from a public health standpoint, we consider important to continue working in this line of research with the aim of better understanding the extent of body weight dissatisfaction in women dietitians, and how this dissatisfaction could interfere with their professional practice.

Abstract

The reaction of AgBF(4) with two equivalents of pzH (pyrazole) or dmpzH (3,5-dimethylpyrazole) leads to [Ag(pzH)(2)]BF(4) or [Ag(dmpzH)(2)]BF(4). The reaction of [AuCl(tht)] with an equimolar amount of dmpzH in refluxing hexane leads to [Au(dmpzH)(2)][AuCl(2)]. Similar complexes [Au(dmpzH)(2)]A (A = BF(4) or NO(3)) are obtained from [AuCl(tht)], two equivalents of dmpzH, and AgBF(4) or AgNO(3). The complexes [Ag(dmpzH)(2)]BF(4) and [Au(dmpzH)(2)]A (A = [AuCl(2)], BF(4) or NO(3)) crystallize as ionic pairs where the NH groups of the pyrazoles are involved in short cation-anion interactions. The nitrate complex crystallizes as a dimer, where both molecules are supported by pi-stacking interactions between the pyrazole rings. The crystal structure of [Ag(pzH)(2)]BF(4) reveals a three dimensional array of cations and anions. In solution, [Ag(pzH)(2)]BF(4) and [Ag(dmpzH)(2)]BF(4) undergo intermolecular processes involving pyrazole decoordination, and behave as 1/1 electrolytes; whereas dimethylpyrazole gold complexes do not display any dynamic behavior, and show cation-anion association also in solution.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate body composition and body image (perception and satisfaction) in a group of young elite soccer players and to compare the data with those of a control group (age and BMI matched). Participants were 56 volunteer males whose mean age and BMI were 19.6 (SD 1.3) years and 23.3 (SD 1.1) kg/m2, respectively. Results showed that soccer players have a higher lean mass and lower fat mass than controls. Moreover, body perception (difference between current and actual image) was more accurate in controls than in soccer players, and the results suggest a tendency for soccer players to aspire to have more muscle mass and body fat. Soccer players perceived an ideal image with significantly higher body-fat percentage than their current and actual images. There were no body-dissatisfaction differences between groups, however. Although the results are necessarily limited by the small sample size, the findings should be of interest to coaches of young elite soccer teams.

Abstract

The present study analyzes the prevalence of overweight/obesity in a sample of young adults from the University of the Basque Country (Spain), and tests the efficiency of the silhouettes to predict overweight/obesity. This cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of volunteer university students from the University of the Basque Country (356 men and 745 women, age: 18-33 years), who came to the Physical Anthropology laboratory where a standardized questionnaire was administered and anthropometric measurements were taken by a well-trained anthropometrist. Height and weight were obtained. BMI was calculated as weight/height(2) (kg/m(2)) and it was used as a reference method. Using a questionnaire, based on the standard figural stimuli, subjects were asked to choose the silhouette which was closest to his/her usual appearance (current body size). The accuracy of the Williamson et al.'s silhouettes as an overweight-obesity indicator was analyzed by gender-specific receiver operating curve (ROC). The cutoff figure to distinguish between nonoverweight and overweight-obese individuals corresponded to number 7 in men and 6 in women. These cutoff values matched optimal sensitivity and specificity, with few nonoverweight subjects selecting silhouettes bigger than 7 in the case of men or 6 for women. In conclusion, the figural stimuli allows the identification of populations at overweight/obesity risk with the simple use of silhouettes, at least in this rank of age, where the overweight and obesity are yet little frequent.

Abstract

Objetivo: Analizar la percepción de la imagen corporal y comparar los resultados con las medidas reales en un grupo de estudiantes universitarias. Sujetos: La muestra estuvo formada por 28 mujeres estudiantes de la Diplomatura en Nutrición Humana y Dietética de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), que participaron voluntariamente tras dar su consentimiento informado. La edad media fue de 22,01 ± 2,12 años (20,23-28,25). Material y métodos: Las variables de antropometría estimadas de forma directa y los índices derivados se compararon con valores de referencia. La valoración de la percepción de la imagen corporal se llevó a cabo con un software somatomórfico. La diferencia entre las medidas percibidas y las ideales se utilizaron como medida de insatisfacción con la imagen corporal. El análisis estadístico se llevó a cabo con el programa SPSS vs 14,0. Resultados y discusión: La prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en la muestra objeto de estudio fue del 10,7%, y la de bajo peso fue del 7,1%. La percepción de la grasa corporal fue buena, mientras que la de la masa muscular difirió en gran medida de la real (3,91 ± 2,75 kg/m²; P < 0,001). El nivel de insatisfacción corporal fue más elevado para la masa grasa (6,00 ± 8,61%; P < 0,001) que para elíndice de musculación (1,65 ± 2,82 kg/m²; P < 0,01), lo que puede estar justificado por los cánones de belleza actuales y por la sobre-valoración de la delgadez. A la vista de los resultados, consideramos que sería interesante continuar en esta línea de investigación, con el fin de poder hacer análisis comparativos con otros grupos de población. Objetive: To assess the body image perception and to compare the results with the true measurements in a group of university students. Subjects: Participants were 28 volunteer females recruited from the degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetic from the University of the Basque Country (Spain). All participants gave their informed consent. The mean (SD) age of the participants was 22.01 (2.12) years (20,23-28,25). Methods: Anthropometric measurement estimated directly and the derived indexes were compared with reference values. The assessment of body image perception was made using a somatomorphic software. The difference between the perceived measurements and the ideals were used as measure of body dissatisfaction. Data were analyzed using SPSS vs 14.0. Results and discussion: Prevalence of overweight and obesity was 10.7%, and of under-weight was 70.1%. The body fat perception was well, while the perception of the muscle index was significantly different from the real measure (3.91 ± 2.75 kg/m²; P < 0.001). The level of body dissatisfaction was higher for the body fat (6.00 ± 8.61%; P < 0.001) than for the muscle index (1.65 ± 2.82 kg/m²; P < 0.01). This result can be justified for the present canons of beauty and for the overvaluation of the thinness. Additional research is needed to further know the relation between female body image and true measurements of body composition. Future research will allow to compare the results with other populations.

Abstract

GSTT1 and GSTM1 genes possess an inherited deletion associated with a lack of enzyme activity. The heterozygous condition of this deletion is difficult to determine in low-quality DNA with existing PCR protocols. We designed and validated a multiplex real-time PCR assay by adapting the DeltaDeltaCt relative quantification method for the analysis of GSTT1 and GSTM1 markers to accurately differentiate the three genotypes ( *1/1, *1/0, and *0/0) in degraded DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue. Gene copy number values obtained provide for unambiguous homozygous and heterozygous differentiation. The efficacy shown by the PCR assay endorses its usefulness for complete genotyping of glutathione S-transferases in archival tissues.

111. A short training program improves the accuracy of portion-size estimates in future dietitians

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine whether a short training program, using real foods, would decreased their portion-size estimation errors after training. 90 student volunteers (20.18±0.44 y old) of the University of the Basque Country (Spain) were trained in observational techniques and tested in food-weight estimation during and after a 3-hour training period. The program included 57 commonly consumed foods that represent a variety of forms (125 different shapes). Estimates of food weight were compared with actual weights. Effectiveness of training was determined by examining change in the absolute percentage error for all observers and over all foods over time. Data were analyzed using SPSS vs. 13.0. The portion-size errors decreased after training for most of the foods. Additionally, the accuracy of their estimates clearly varies by food group and forms. Amorphous was the food type estimated least accurately both before and after training. Our findings suggest that future dietitians can be trained to estimate quantities by direct observation across a wide range of foods. However this training may have been too brief for participants to fully assimilate the application Un programa de entrenamiento breve mejora la pre cisión en la estimación de raciones en futuros dietistas. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar si un programa de entrenamiento breve, con alimentos reales, podría reducir el error en la estimación de raciones tras el entrenamiento. 90 estudiantes voluntarios(20,18±0,44 años) de la Universidad del País Vasco (España) recibieron un entrenamiento en técnicas observacionales, y se valoró su capacidad para estimar el peso de alimentos durante y después de un periodo de tres horas de entrenamiento. Dicho programa incluyó 57 alimentos de consumo habitual que representan una amplia variedad de formas (125 formas diferentes). Los pesos estimados se compararon con los pesos reales y la efectividad del programa se determinó examinando los cambios en el porcentaje de error absoluto a lo largo del tiempo. Los datos se analizaron con el programa SPSS vs. 13.0. Los errores en la estimación de raciones disminuyeron tras el entrenamiento para la mayoría de los alimentos. Además, la precisión en la estimación varió ampliamente según el grupo de alimentos y las formas. Los alimentos que se estimaron con menor precisión fueron los amorfos, tanto antes como después del entrenamiento. Nuestros resultados sugieren que el programa de entrenamiento implementado para la estimación de raciones en un amplio rango de alimentos por observación directa resulta eficaz en futuros dietistas. Sin embargo, este entrenamiento pudo ser demasiado breve para que los participantes asimilaran su aplicación

112. Rhenium-mediated coupling of acetonitrile and pyrazoles. New molecular clefts for anion binding

Abstract

The reaction of fac-[ReBr(CO)3(NCMe)2] (1) with either pyrazole (Hpz) or 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (Hdmpz) in a 1:2 Re/pyrazole ratio affords the known complexes fac-[ReBr(CO)3(Hpz)2] (2) and [ReBr(CO)3(Hdmpz)2] (3). Using a 1:1 ratio, MeCN as solvent, and longer reaction times led to a mixture in which the major components are the pyrazolylamidino complexes fac-[ReBr(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)pz-kappa2N,N)] (4) and fac-[ReBr(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)dmpz-kappa2N,N)] (5). The complexes fac-[ReBr(CO)3(Hpz)(NCMe)] (6) and fac-[ReBr(CO)3(Hdmpz)(NCMe)] (7) (along with 2 and 3) were found to be minor components of these reactions. Analogous reactions of fac-[Re(OClO3)(CO)3(NCMe)2] yielded fac-[Re(NCCH3)(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)pz-kappa2N,N)]ClO4 (8), fac-[Re(NCCH3)(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)dmpz-kappa2N,N)]ClO4 (9), fac-[Re(Hpz)(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)pz-kappa2N,N)]ClO4 (10), and fac-[Re(Hdmpz)(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)dmpz-kappa2N,N)]ClO4 (11). The X-ray structure of 11 showed the perchlorate anion to be hydrogen-bonded by the N-H groups of the pyrazole and pyrazolylamidino ligands. The behavior of the compound fac-[Re(Hdmpz)(CO)3(HN=C(CH3)dmpz-kappa2N,N)]BAr'4 (13) (synthesized by reaction of [ReBr(CO)3(Hdmpz)2] (3) with (i) AgOTf and (ii) NaBAr'(4)/MeCN) as an anion receptor has been studied in CD3CN solution. In addition, the structure of the supramolecular adduct fac-[Re(CO)3(Hdmpz)(HN=C(CH3)dmpz-kappa2N,N)].Cl (14), featuring chloride binding by the two N-H groups, was determined by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to compare different methods for evaluating body fat percentage (BF%) (anthropometric methods and bioelectrical impedance analysis) in university students. Subjects were 653 healthy students whose mean age, body height, body weight and BMI were 21·1 (SD 2·5) years, 166·0 (SD 8·4) cm, 62·8 (SD 11·0) kg and 22·7 (SD 3·1) kg/m2, respectively. Results showed that BMI is a poor predictor of body fatness since the sensitivity was low in comparison with the reference method (Siri equation). The lowest values of BF% were obtained using the reference method (Siri equation) (21·8 (SD 6·8)%). The two methods with the highest agreement were Siri and Lean (mean difference, −0·5), followed by Brozek (mean difference, −1·4) and Deurenberg (mean difference, −1·5). The largest mean difference for BF% was between Siri and impedance (−4·5). Although the methods and/or equations used in the present study have been commonly utilised to estimate BF% in young adults, the results must be interpreted with caution in the diagnosis and monitoring of overweight and obesity.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine differences in dietary intake between overweight and non-overweight schoolchildren and differences in consumption during the day and in the course of the week. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Using a cross-sectional design, 32 schoolchildren (11-y-old) were selected at random. The parents of children recorded dietary intake for a week using the food weighing method. The children were considered to be overweight when the weight for height was higher than 90th percentile. RESULTS: Some 46.9% of examined schoolchildren were considered overweight. Abstract

Body shape has a great variability determined, partly, by energy intake and physical activity, as well as by gender and age. The aim of this research was to analyse the relation between socio-economic status (SES) and body shape estimated through the somatotype, in a sample of university students. The sample included 316 males and 635 females aged 18–33. Somatotype was estimated by the Heath-Carter anthropometric technique1. The information included data of SES. A MANOVA test was used to test differences among groups. The mean somatotypes were 4.0–4.4–2.3 in males and 5.4 –3.4–2.2 in females. Sexual dimorphism for the whole somatotype was found (p<0.001). There is a greater stability of the body shape in females regarding SES and more variability in males. Males’ somatotype was significantly related to SES, low socioeconomic levels were associated with high values of endomorphy and mesomorphy.

Abstract

The reaction of AgBF4with two equivalents of pzH (pyrazole) or dmpzH (3,5-dimethylpyrazole) leads to [Ag(pzH)2]BF4or [Ag(dmpzH)2]BF4. The reaction of [AuCl(tht)] with an equimolar amount of dmpzH in refluxing hexane leads to [Au(dmpzH)2][AuCl2]. Similar complexes [Au(dmpzH)2]A (A = BF4or NO3) are obtained from [AuCl(tht)], two equivalents of dmpzH, and AgBF4or AgNO3. The complexes [Ag(dmpzH)2]BF4and [Au(dmpzH)2]A (A = [AuCl2], BF4or NO3) crystallize as ionic pairs where the NH groups of the pyrazoles are involved in short cation–anion interactions. The nitrate complex crystallizes as a dimer, where both molecules are supported by π-stacking interactions between the pyrazole rings. The crystal structure of [Ag(pzH)2]BF4reveals a three dimensional array of cations and anions. In solution, [Ag(pzH)2]BF4and [Ag(dmpzH)2]BF4undergo intermolecular processes involving pyrazole decoordination, and behave as 1/1 electrolytes; whereas dimethylpyrazole gold complexes do not display any dynamic behavior, and show cation–anion association also in solution. Background Frailty is a state of increased vulnerability to stressors, associated to poor health outcomes. The aim of this study was to design and introduce a Frailty Index (FI; according to the age-related accumulation of deficit model) in a large cohort of hospitalized older persons, in order to benefit from its capacity to comprehensively weight the risk profile of the individual. Methods Patients aged 65 and older enrolled in the REPOSI register from 2010 to 2016 were considered in the present analyses. Variables recorded at the hospital admission (including socio-demographic, physical, cognitive, functional and clinical factors) were used to compute the FI. The prognostic impact of the FI on in-hospital and 12-month mortality was assessed. Results Among the 4488 patients of the REPOSI register, 3847 were considered eligible for a 34-item FI computation. The median FI in the sample was 0.27 (interquartile range 0.21–0.37). The FI was significantly predictive of both in-hospital (OR 1.61, 95%CI 1.38–1.87) and overall (HR 1.46, 95%CI 1.32–1.62) mortality, also after adjustment for age and sex. Conclusions The FI confirms its strong predictive value for negative outcomes. Its implementation in cohort studies (including those conducted in the hospital setting) may provide useful information for better weighting the complexity of the older person and accordingly design personalized interventions.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Older patients are prone to multimorbidity and polypharmacy, with an inherent risk of adverse events and drug interactions. To the best of our knowledge, available information on the appropriateness of lipid-lowering treatment is extremely limited. AIM: The aim of the present study was to quantify and characterize lipid-lowering drug use in a population of complex in-hospital older patients. METHODS: We analyzed data from 87 units of internal medicine or geriatric medicine in the REPOSI (Registro Politerapie della Società Italiana di Medicina Interna) study, with reference to the 2010 and 2012 patient cohorts. Lipid-lowering drug use was closely correlated with the clinical profiles, including multimorbidity markers and polypharmacy. RESULTS: 2171 patients aged >65 years were enrolled (1057 males, 1114 females, mean age 78.6 years). The patients treated with lipid-lowering drugs amounted to 508 subjects (23.4%), with no gender difference. Atorvastatin (39.3%) and simvastatin (34.0%) were the most widely used statin drugs. Likelihood of treatment was associated with polypharmacy (≥5 drugs) and with higher Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS) score. At logistic regression analysis, the presence of coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and hypertension were significantly correlated with lipid-lowering drug use, whereas age showed an inverse correlation. Diabetes was not associated with drug treatment. CONCLUSIONS: In this in-hospital cohort, the use of lipid-lowering agents was mainly driven by patients' clinical history, most notably the presence of clinically overt manifestations of atherosclerosis. Increasing age seems to be associated with lower prescription rates. This might be indicative of cautious behavior towards a potentially toxic treatment regimen
