Producción Científica, Purpose - One of the problems advertising has faced has been the rising counter-argumentation in traditional media. The search for new pull marketing strategies in a culture of digital entertainment requires new and more effective forms of product placement. The authors investigate the advertising effectiveness of new types of branding in products of the interactive digital entertainment culture. Design/methodology/approach - The research consisted in placing several types of real and fictional brands in five versions of a narrative video game. Over a two-week period, participants were tested on counter-argumentation, interactivity with the static and dynamic advertising stimuli and advertising effectiveness (N=274). Findings - The results show the cognitive, affective, and conative advertising effectiveness of transfigured brands compared to real and fictional brands. The transfigured brands have the advantage over fictional brands in that, during the enjoyment of the videogame, the consumer makes a semantic transfer to the real brand. This processing has a high advertising effectiveness as it induces processing of real brands without provoking counter-argumentation. Originality - This is the first research that explores and conceptualizes the phenomenon of brand transfiguration, which had not been investigated until now and which opens new applied possibilities for brand placement. Practical implications - Interactivity with transfigured brands contributes to create experience and engagement with the brand. Moreover, as they are well integrated in the content, they avoid counter-argumentation. Motivada por el impacto tecnológico del diodo eléctrico, esta tesis se dedica a explorar la física y los posibles diseños de dispositivos que tienen una respuesta asimétrica a estímulos externos. Se estudian dispositivos diferentes. Uno de ellos es el diodo térmico, un dispositivo que, análogamente al diodo eléctrico, permite el flujo de corrientes de calor en una dirección pero se comporta como un aislante en la opuesta. Se exploran varios diseños basados en cadenas de iones y átomos para obtener un diodo térmico eficaz y factible. El segundo tipo de dispositivo se basa en un potencial cuántico en una dimensión que tenga coeficientes de transmisión y reflexión asimétricos para las partículas que inciden desde la izquierda y la derecha. Este tipo de dispositivo requiere hamiltonianos no hermíticos y no locales. Se propone una implementación de un hamiltoniano no local y no hermítico en una plataforma de óptica cuántica. Esta implementación cuántico-óptica da la asimetría de transmisión/reflexión coeficientes buscada. Motivated by the technological impact of the electric diode, this thesis is devoted to explore thephysics and possible designs of devices that have an asymmetric response to external inputs.Two different devices are studied. One of them is the thermal diode, a device that, analogouslyto the electric diode, allows heat currents to flow in one direction but behaves as an insulator inthe opposite one. Several designs based on chains of ions and atoms are explored to obtain a performant and feasible thermal diode. The second kind of device is based on a quantumpotential in 1 dimension that has asymmetric scattering coefficients for particles incident fromthe left and the right. This kind of device requires non-Hermitian and non-local hamiltonians. Animplementation of a non-local and non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is given in a quantum-opticalset-up. The quantum-optical implementation has asymmetric scattering coefficients.

Since the initial predictions for the existence of Weyl fermions in condensed matter, many different experimental techniques have confirmed the existence of Weyl semimetals. Among these techniques, optical responses have shown a variety of effects associated with the existence of Weyl fermions. In chiral crystals we find a new type of fermions protected by crystal symmetries --- the so-called chiral multifold fermions. These quasiparticles can be understood as a higher-spin generalization of Weyl fermions.In the first part of this thesis, we provide a complete description of all chiral multifold fermions, studying their topological properties and the k . p models describing them. We compute the optical conductivity of all chiral multifold fermions and establish the optical selection rules for chiral multifold fermions. We find that the activation frequencies are different for each type of multifold fermion, thus constituting a unique signature for each type of multifold fermion. Additionally, we found that the optical conductivity of threefold and fourfold fermions are up to four times larger than that of a Weyl fermion per node, given the same Fermi velocity.Building on the theoretical results obtained from the previous analysis, we study two materials candidates to host multifold fermions: RhSi and CoSi. We analyze the experimental results with k . p models and tight-binding models based on the crystal symmetries of the material. We trace back the features observed in the experimental optical conductivity to the existence of multifold fermions near the Fermi level and estimate the chemical potential and the scattering lifetime in both materials. Additionally, our analysis of the optical conductivity of CoSi indicates the existence of a spin-3/2 fourfold fermion near the Fermi level, constituting the first example of a spin-3/2 quasiparticle excitation in a crystal.In the last part, we study the second-harmonic generation of RhSi. We analyze the experimental results using a second-order k . p Hamiltonian and compare our results with density functional theory calculations. We found a sizeable second-harmonic response in the low-energy regime due to the optical transitions between topological bands. However, this regime is extremely challenging to access with the current experimental techniques. The density functional theory calculations reproduce the reported experimental data reasonably well, allowing us to trace back the features observed in the second-harmonic generation to different optical transitions.Finally, we present the main conclusions of our research and motivate further studies based on the work presented in this thesis: first, understanding better chiral multifold semimetals and their responses; second, we propose to apply the analysis of optical responses developed in this thesis to different materials, such as topological superconductors, and top develop a package to compute linear and nonlinear optical responses of different models based on the codes developed during our research., Depuis les prédictions initiales de l'existence de fermions de Weyl dans la matière condensée, de nombreuses techniques expérimentales différentes ont confirmé l'existence de semi-métaux de Weyl. Parmi ces techniques, les réponses optiques ont montré une variété d'effets associés à l'existence de fermions de Weyl. Dans les cristaux chiraux, nous trouvons un nouveau type de fermions protégés par des symétries cristallines --- les fermions multifolds chiraux. Ces quasiparticules peuvent être comprises comme une généralisation à spin plus élevé des fermions de Weyl.Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous proposons une description complète de tous les fermions chiraux multifolds, en étudiant leurs propriétés topologiques et les modèles k . p les décrivant. Nous calculons la conductivité optique de tous les fermions multifold chiraux et établissons les règles de sélection optique pour les fermions multifold chiraux. Nous constatons que les fréquences d'activation sont différentes pour chaque type de fermion multifold, constituant ainsi une signature unique pour chaque type de fermion multifold. De plus, nous avons constaté que la conductivité optique des fermions triples et quadruples est jusqu'à quatre fois supérieure à celle d'un fermion de Weyl par nœud, compte tenu de la même vitesse de Fermi.Sur la base des résultats théoriques obtenus à partir de l'analyse précédente, nous étudions deux matériaux candidats pour héberger des fermions multicouches : RhSi et CoSi. Nous analysons les résultats expérimentaux avec des modèles k . p et des modèles à liaison étroite basés sur les symétries cristallines du matériau. Nous remontons les caractéristiques observées dans la conductivité optique expérimentale à l'existence de fermions multiples près du niveau de Fermi et estimons le potentiel chimique et la durée de vie de diffusion dans les deux matériaux. De plus, notre analyse de la conductivité optique du CoSi indique l'existence d'un fermion quadruple de spin-3/2 près du niveau de Fermi, constituant le premier exemple d'excitation de quasiparticule de spin-3/2 dans un cristal.Dans la dernière partie, nous étudions la génération de deuxième harmonique de RhSi. Nous analysons les résultats expérimentaux en utilisant un hamiltonien k . p du second ordre et comparons nos résultats avec les calculs de la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité. Nous avons trouvé une réponse de seconde harmonique importante dans le régime de basse énergie en raison des transitions optiques entre les bandes topologiques. Cependant, ce régime est extrêmement difficile d'accès avec les techniques expérimentales actuelles. Les calculs de la théorie fonctionnelle de la densité reproduisent raisonnablement bien les données expérimentales rapportées, ce qui nous permet de retracer les caractéristiques observées dans la génération de la deuxième harmonique à différentes transitions optiques.Enfin, nous présentons les principales conclusions de notre recherche et motivons d'autres études basées sur les travaux présentés dans cette thèse : premièrement, mieux comprendre les semi-métaux chiraux multifolds et leurs réponses ; Deuxièmement, nous proposons d'appliquer l'analyse des réponses optiques développées dans cette thèse à différents matériaux, tels que les supraconducteurs topologiques, et de développer un package pour calculer les réponses optiques linéaires et non linéaires de différents modèles basés sur les codes développés au cours de nos recherches.
