Abstract

FVV Live is a novel end-to-end free-viewpoint video system, designed for low cost and real-time operation, based on off-the-shelf components. The system has been designed to yield high-quality free-viewpoint video using consumer-grade cameras and hardware, which enables low deployment costs and easy installation for immersive event-broadcasting or videoconferencing. The paper describes the architecture of the system, including acquisition and encoding of multiview plus depth data in several capture servers and virtual view synthesis on an edge server. All the blocks of the system have been designed to overcome the limitations imposed by hardware and network, which impact directly on the accuracy of depth data and thus on the quality of virtual view synthesis. The design of FVV Live allows for an arbitrary number of cameras and capture servers, and the results presented in this paper correspond to an implementation with nine stereo-based depth cameras. FVV Live presents low motion-to-photon and end-to-end delays, which enables seamless free-viewpoint navigation and bilateral immersive communications. Moreover, the visual quality of FVV Live has been assessed through subjective assessment with satisfactory results, and additional comparative tests show that it is preferred over state-of-the-art DIBR alternatives.

131. Scaffolding the Learning-To-Teach Process: A Study in an EFL Teacher Education Programme in Argentina

Abstract

This study seeks to examine how a supervisor scaffolds the student-teachers' learning-to-teach process in the context of one-to-one tutoring sessions in an English as a foreign language teacher education programme in Argentina. The findings indicate that scaffolding implies two main phases: a diagnostic and an intervention phase. Moreover, the supervisor was found to provide contingent help, which suited the student-teachers' perceived needs and/or difficulties. In conclusion, scaffolded help should be understood in relation to the function it serves and how it accommodates the students' level of understanding.

138. Automating Whole Brain Histology to MRI Registration: Implementation of a Computational Pipeline

Abstract

Although the latest advances in MRI technology have allowed the acquisition of higher resolution images, reliable delineation of cytoarchitectural or subcortical nuclei boundaries is not possible. As a result, histological images are still required to identify the exact limits of neuroanatomical structures. However, histological processing is associated with tissue distortion and fixation artifacts, which prevent a direct comparison between the two modalities. Our group has previously proposed a histological procedure based on celloidin embedding that reduces the amount of artifacts and yields high quality whole brain histological slices. Celloidin embedded tissue, nevertheless, still bears distortions that must be corrected. We propose a computational pipeline designed to semi-automatically process the celloidin embedded histology and register them to their MRI counterparts. In this paper we report the accuracy of our pipeline in two whole brain volumes from the Brain Bank of the Brazilian Aging Brain Study Group (BBBABSG). Results were assessed by comparison of manual segmentations from two experts in both MRIs and the registered histological volumes. The two whole brain histology/MRI datasets were successfully registered using minimal user interaction. We also point to possible improvements based on recent implementations that could be added to this pipeline, potentially allowing for higher precision and further performance gains.

Abstract

We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a weighted composition operator to be co-isometric on a general weighted Hardy space of analytic functions in the unit disk whose reproducing kernel has the usual natural form. This turns out to be equivalent to the property of being unitary. The result reveals a dichotomy identifying a specific family of weighted Hardy spaces as the only ones that support non-trivial operators of this kind., Comment: The proof of Proposition 1 has been corrected and reorganized.
