Introduction: Cancers invade and destroy various parts of the body leading to death, if untreated. The burden of pediatric cancer is rising, especially in resource-poor regions. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of childhood cancer types, basis of diagnosis, therapy received, and outcomes. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of children aged 0-17 who were diagnosed and treated for cancer from January 2013 to December 2022. Data obtained included biodata, diagnoses, initial disease stage, diagnostic investigation results and treatments from medical records. Other outcomes assessed were relapse, abandonment of therapy, and death. Results: Of the 229 patients, males were 57.6%, 51.5% were in age-group 0-4 years and mean(SD) annual cancer crude incidence rate (CIR) was 0.29(0.09)/100,000 children. Retinoblastoma increased from 0.16/100,000 children in 2013 to 0.27/100,000 children in 2022 and had the highest average age-standardized incidence rate (0.11/100,000 children). Other malignancies had annual CIR between 0.01 and 0.08/100,000 children. The most common method of diagnosis was primary site histology (39.7%). Majority had late-stage disease (66.4%), incomplete chemotherapy (62.5%), no surgery (54.5%), and no radiotherapy (99.1%). There was disease relapse (20.5%), treatment abandonment (42.8%), discharged against medical advice (23.6%) and death (29.7%). More males than females died (1.5:1). The crude mortality rate of retinoblastoma increased from 0.01 to 0.12/100,000 children, while others fluctuated between 0.01 and 0.04/100,000 children. The average age-standardized mortality rate was highest in 0–4 years’ age group (48.5%). Conclusion: The rate of new cancers, particularly retinoblastoma, is rising in our locality. Majority present in advanced disease and are not effectively treated, resulting in increasing mortality rates. Periodic audit of childhood cancer burden may help relevant stakeholders in determining ways of curbing these worsening pediatric cancer trends.

Abstract Background Although it is well known that the older people have been the most susceptible to COVID-19, there are conflicting data on the susceptibility of centenarians. Two epidemiological study have shown that older centenarians (> 101 years old at the time of the 2020 pandemic peak) are more resilient than the remaining centenarians, suggesting that this resilience might be linked to the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. To gain insight into this matter, specifically whether the resilience of older centenarians to SARS-CoV-2 infection is linked to the Spanish Flu they had been affected by, we conducted a retrospective serological study. This study examined serum samples from 33 centenarians, encompassing semi- (aged > 104 109 years, N = 4), born between 1905 and 1922, against both SARS-CoV-2 and 1918 H1N1 pseudotype virus. Results Anamnestic and laboratory data suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infection occurred in 8 centenarians. The infection appeared to have been asymptomatic or mild, and hospitalization was not required, despite 3 out of 8 being between 109 and 110 years old. The levels of anti-spike antibodies in centenarians infected and/or vaccinated were higher, although not significantly, than those produced by a random sample of seventy-year-old individuals used as controls. All centenarians had antibody levels against the 1918 H1N1 virus significantly higher (almost 50 times) than those observed in the quoted group of seventy-year-old subjects, confirming the key role in maintaining immunological memory from a priming that occurred over 100 years ago. Centenarians whose blood was collected prior to the pandemic outbreak demonstrated neutralising antibodies against the 1918 H1N1 virus, but all these subjects tested negative for SARS-CoV-2. Conclusion This retrospective study shows that older centenarians are quite resilient to COVID-19, as they are capable of producing good levels of neutralising antibodies and experiencing mild or asymptomatic disease. This could be attributed to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic through mechanisms other than the presence of cross-reactive antibodies between the 1918 H1N1 virus and SARS-CoV-2. Another possibility is that the association is purely temporal, solely correlated with the advanced age of resilient centenarians compared to those born after 1918, since older centenarians are known to have better control of immune-inflammatory responses.

Abstract In the context of ongoing discussions about climate change, the focus on beach resilience has gained significant attention in contemporary studies. However, a comprehensive understanding of beach resilience, particularly in the short term, remains limited. This study utilizes a dataset of 104 storm events in Hasaki beach, located on the East coast of Japan, to investigate the 10-day beach recovery. The study considers four types of distinct beach profile patterns based on sandbar formations. Employing XGBoost and the SHAP explanation method, the influence of morphometric indicators on beach resilience were explored. Resilient beach profiles are anticipated to exhibit rapid recovery following erosional storm events. The results reveal that morphometrics play a crucial role in determining the short-term, 10-day, recovery of beaches, with specific morphometric features demonstrating pronounced effects based on profile patterns. The study contributes to the current knowledge of post-storm beach recovery and provides insights that could inform discussions on beach resilience.

Abstract Deep learning has emerged as a highly effective and precise method for classifying images. The presence of plant diseases poses a significant threat to food security. However, accurately identifying these diseases in plants is challenging due to limited infrastructure and techniques. Fortunately, the recent advancements in deep learning within the field of computer vision have opened up new possibilities for diagnosing plant pathology. Detecting plant diseases at an early stage is crucial, and this research paper proposes a deep convolutional neural network model that can rapidly and accurately identify plant diseases. Given the minimal variation in image texture and color, deep learning techniques are essential for robust recognition. In this study, we introduce a deep, explainable neural architecture specifically designed for recognizing plant diseases. Fine-tuned deep convolutional neural network is designed by freezing the layers and adjusting the weights of learnable layers. By extracting deep features from a down sampled feature map of a fine-tuned neural network, we are able to classify these features using a customized K-Nearest Neighbors Algorithm. To train and validate our model, we utilize the largest standard plant village dataset, which consists of 38 classes. To evaluate the performance of our proposed system, we estimate specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, and AUC. The results demonstrate that our system achieves an impressive maximum validation accuracy of 99.95% and an AUC of 1, making it the most ideal and highest-performing approach compared to current state-of-the-art deep learning methods for automatically identifying plant diseases.

Abstract With a national prevalence of 0.9%, Burundi is close to achieving UNAIDS’ 2025 targets. Despite this, different types of crises periodically disrupt its HIV health services. The community-based program EPIC measured the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Burundi in 2021. Specifically, it assessed ART interruption and associated factors since the beginning of the pandemic. The study questionnaire was administered to PLHIV in three cities between October and November 2021. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Logistic regression models helped identify factors associated with ART interruption. Of the 317 respondents, 37 (11.7%) reported interruption. The majority (79.2%) self-identified as belonging to key populations. Interruption was significantly associated with: fewer HIV medical follow-up visits (adjusted Odds Ratio, aOR = 7.80, p = 0.001) and forced HIV status disclosure (aOR = 4.10, p = 0.004). It was inversely associated with multi-month ART dispensing (aOR = 0.36, p = 0.017) since the beginning of the pandemic and the perception of not having been sufficiently informed by the HIV medical team about the risk of COVID-19 infection (aOR = 0.11, p

Abstract This article explores how urban male youth in Zimbabwe have created economies of hustle and waithood through soccer betting to ensure alternative means of survival in a country facing rapid urban growth and endless economic challenges. Data were collected using a combination of ethnographic methods, including participant and non-participant observations, betting experimentation, and informal conversations. The findings show that urban male youth in Zimbabwean cities use a variety of skills in soccer betting to increase their chances of winning and earning a living through informal economic activities while waiting for employment opportunities. The findings also demonstrate the intellectual genius and streetwise resourcefulness of young people, as they incorporate research, digital, and networking competencies to decide and place their bets. The article concludes that soccer betting is not only part of Zimbabwe’s economies of hustle, leisure, and waithood but also central in influencing the adoption of ICT products and digital skills among male youths in Zimbabwe.

Abstract Background Sense of coherence (SOC) is a personal resource that reflects the extent to which one perceives the world as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful. Decades of empirical research consistently show that SOC is an important protective resource for health and well-being. Despite the extensive use of the 13-item measure of SOC, there remains uncertainty regarding its factorial structure. Additionally, a valid and reliable Czech version of the scale is lacking. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the SOC-13 scale in a representative sample of Czech adults. Methods An online survey was completed by 498 Czech adults (18–86 years old) between November 2021 and December 2021. We used confirmatory factor analysis to examine the factorial structure of the scale. Further, we examined the variations in SOC based on age and gender, and we tested the criterion validity of the scale using the short form of the Mental Health Continuum (MHC) scale and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) scale as mental health outcomes. Results SOC-13 showed an acceptable one- and three-factor fit only with specified residual covariance between items 2 and 3. We tested alternative short versions by systematically removing poorly performing items. The fit significantly improved for all shorter versions with SOC-9 having the best psychometric properties with a clear one-factorialstructure. We found that SOC increases with age and males score higher than females. SOC showed a moderately strong positive correlation with MHC, and a moderately strong negative correlation with GAD. These findings were similar for all tested versions supporting the criterion validity of the SOC scale. Conclusion Our findings suggest that shortened versions of the SOC-13 scale have better psychometric properties than the original 13-item version in the Czech adult population. Particularly, SOC-9 emerges as a viable alternative, showing comparable reliability and validity as the 13-item version and a clear one-factorial structure in our sample.

This paper deals with the collision of sphere shape grenades with sand media. The central issue of the article is the establishing of an empirical velocity equation of the grenade while impacting on sand that is used to solve motion equations of the mechanical mechanism inside the impact grenade fuze. The paper focuses on impact velocities that are lower than 5 m s−1. An experiment was conducted to study the velocity of the grenade while impacting on dry sand. A high-speed camera video was used to capture the grenade positions. The grenade velocity in the impact process was generated from these video data. Some types of fitting curves are used to regress the velocity equation of the grenade while interacting with the sand media and the best-fitting model is chosen. The result shows the regression curve has a high correlation with the experiment data for grenade velocities below 5 m s−1. The received regression equation is useful for analyzing the working ability of the inertial mechanism inside the impact grenade or analyzing and choosing the appropriate parameters of each part in the inertial mechanism to meet the required characteristics of the mechanism.

Abstract The presence of incompatibility alleles in primary amphidiploids constitutes a reproductive barrier in newly synthesized wheat-rye hybrids. To overcome this barrier, the genome stabilization process includes large-scale chromosome rearrangements. In incompatible crosses resulting in fertile amphidiploids, the elimination of one of the incompatible alleles Eml-A1 or Eml-R1b can occur already in the somatic tissue of the wheat × rye hybrid embryo. We observed that the interaction of incompatible loci Eml-A1 of wheat and Eml-R1b of rye after overcoming embryo lethality leads to hybrid sterility in primary triticale. During subsequent seed reproductions (R1, R2 or R3) most of the chromosomes of A, B, D and R subgenomes undergo rearrangement or eliminations to increase the fertility of the amphidiploid by natural selection. Genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) coverage analysis showed that improved fertility is associated with the elimination of entire and partial chromosomes carrying factors that either cause the disruption of plant development in hybrid plants or lead to the restoration of the euploid number of chromosomes (2n = 56) in the absence of one of the incompatible alleles. Highly fertile offspring obtained in compatible and incompatible crosses can be successfully adapted for the production of triticale pre-breeding stocks.

Aim: To provide the first syntaxonomic, plot-based classification of the dry grasslands and thorn-cushion communities in Armenia. Study area: Armenia. Methods: We sampled 111 vegetation plots (10 m2) and recorded environmental and structural parameters. We collected additional 487 relevés from surrounding countries for a broad-scale comparison. We used modified TWINSPAN to derive a syntaxonomic classification system, whose units were then compared among each other regarding species composition, structure, site conditions and distribution. Results: The classification of Armenian vegetation plots resulted in a 12-cluster solution. Unsupervised classification of the broad-scale dataset yielded five main groups, which were used for the high-level syntaxonomic assignments of the Armenian data. We assigned about half of the plots of the Armenian dataset to the Festuco-Brometea, while the remaining represented a potential new class, preliminarily called “Ziziphora tenuior-Stipa arabica grasslands”. Most of the syntaxa below class level are new to science, therefore we provide formal descriptions of three orders (Plantagini atratae-Bromopsietalia variegatae, Onobrychido transcaucasicae-Stipetalia pulcherrimae, Cousinio brachypterae-Stipetalia arabicae), four alliances (Acantholimono caryophyllacei-Stipion holosericeae, Artemision fragrantis, Onobrychido michauxii-Stipion capillatae, Onobrychido transcaucasicae-Stipion pulcherrimae) and six associations. We found significant differences in the topographic, climatic and soil characteristics, and structural parameters, species life forms and distribution range types between the grassland types at different syntaxonomic levels. The mean species richness was 47.3 (vascular plants: 46.8, bryophytes: 0.4, lichens: 0.1). Conclusions: We found remarkable differences of the Armenian dry grasslands from the previously known units and described most of the higher syntaxa and all the associations as new to science. Our study provides arguments for a potential new class of Ziziphora tenuior-Stipa arabica grasslands separate both from the Euro-Siberian Festuco-Brometea and the Anatolian Astragalo-Brometea. Finally, we found plot scale richness of vascular plants clearly above the Palaearctic average of dry grasslands and that of non-vascular plants clearly below, which calls for further biodiversity analyses. Taxonomic reference: Euro+Med (2023) for vascular plants, Hodgetts et al. (2020) for bryophytes, Nimis et al. (2018) for lichens except for Xanthoparmelia camtschadalis (Ach.) Hale. Abbreviations: EDGG = Eurasian Dry Grassland Group; DCA = detrended correspondence analysis; ICPN = International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature (Theurillat et al. 2021); TWINSPAN = two-way indicator species analysis.

Abstract Objectives The use of hemoadsorption (HA) has become popular in the treatment of vasoplegic states associated with massive cytokine release, including septic shock. However, this approach does not seem to be based on robust evidence, and it does not follow international guidelines. To understand the pathophysiological rationale and timing of HA, we conducted a large animal septic shock experiment. Design Prospective randomized large-animal peritoneal septic shock experiment. Setting Laboratory investigation. Subjects Twenty-six anesthetized, mechanically ventilated, and instrumented pigs randomly assigned into (1) sham-operated group with HA (SHAM, n = 5); (2) sepsis animals without HA (SEPSIS, n = 5); (3) sepsis group with HA at norepinephrine initiation (EARLY, n = 8); and (4) sepsis group with HA initiated at norepinephrine rate reaching 0.5 μg/kg/min (LATE, n = 8). Interventions Peritoneal sepsis was induced by cultivated autologous feces inoculation. A CytoSorb cartridge (200 g) with a blood flow rate of 200 mL/min and heparin anticoagulation was used to perform HA. The animals received sedation and intensive organ support up to 48 h or until they experienced cardiovascular collapse. Measurements and main results Systemic hemodynamics, multiple-organ functions, and immune-inflammatory response were measured at predefined periods. The HA treatment was not associated with any measurable benefit in terms of systemic hemodynamics and organ support. The systemic inflammatory markers were unaffected by any of the treatment timings. In contrast, the HA resulted in higher vasopressor load and decreased 36-h survival (5 animals in SHAM (100%), 4 (80%) in SEPSIS, 4 (57%) in EARLY, and 2 (25%) in LATE; p = 0.041). The HA exposure in healthy animals was associated with hemodynamic deterioration, systemic inflammatory response, and cytopenia. Conclusions In this large-animal-controlled fulminant sepsis study, the HA was unable to counteract the disease progression in the early or advanced septic shock phase. However, findings from the HA-exposed sham animals suggest potential safety concerns.

Abstract Aims Heart failure (HF) patients with anaemia tend to have a worse outcome, with increased hospitalization rates, decreased exercise tolerance, and higher mortality compared to those without anaemia. Limited research exists on the association between selenium deficiency and anaemia specifically in HF patients, despite previous findings of a correlation in different populations. The BIOSTAT‐CHF study demonstrated that higher selenium levels in HF patients were associated to a lower risk of anaemia and iron deficiency. This study investigates the relationship between selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentrations, a major contributor and functional biomarker of selenium transport, and anaemia, Hb levels, and iron status in hospitalized HF patients. Methods and results SELENOP was analysed in 320 hospitalized HF subjects, with complete data available for 310 subjects. The relationships between continuous SELENOP concentrations and 1) Hb concentrations, 2) anaemia (Hb

The incidences of multiple sclerosis have risen worldwide, yet neither the trigger nor efficient treatment is known. Some research is dedicated to looking for treatment by parasites, mainly by helminths. However, little is known about the effect of helminths that infect the nervous system. Therefore, we chose the neurotropic avian schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti, which strongly promotes M2 polarization and tissue repair in the central nervous system, and we tested its effect on the course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in mice. Surprisingly, the symptoms of EAE tended to worsen after the infection with T. regenti. The infection did not stimulate tissue repair, as indicated by the similar level of demyelination. Eosinophils heavily infiltrated the infected tissue, and the microglia number increased as well. Furthermore, splenocytes from T. regenti-infected EAE mice produced more interferon (IFN)-γ than splenocytes from EAE mice after stimulation with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein. Our research indicates that the combination of increased eosinophil numbers and production of IFN-γ tends to worsen the EAE symptoms. Moreover, the data highlight the importance of considering the direct effect of the parasite on the tissue, as the migrating parasite may further tissue damage and make tissue repair even more difficult.

Abstract Globally, collisions with vehicles result in millions of animal deaths every year, representing a major issue for wildlife conservation and management. Consequently, and importantly, much research has focused on understanding patterns of animal–vehicle collisions with the aim to reduce roadkill of wildlife. However, existing data on animal–vehicle collisions might also represent a novel opportunity to monitor wildlife populations. For this purpose, we compared data of >1.2 million hunter‐shot deer and >40,000 deer–vehicle collisions collected over 11 years in Denmark. We show that deer–vehicle collision data can be useful for population monitoring of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), fallow deer (Dama dama), and red deer (Cervus elaphus). Roe deer was the most numerous species, representing 90% of observations based both on deer–vehicle collisions and on hunting bag statistics. After accounting for factors related to road infrastructure (road length and density, traffic volume), local (municipality) deer–vehicle collisions were highly correlated with hunting bag data for roe and red deer (Pearson's r > 0.7) but not fallow deer, likely due to biases in hunting bags. Moreover, we used deer–vehicle collision data to map spatiotemporal changes in the distribution of fallow and red deer, and demographic changes in all species. Combined, our results suggest that animal–vehicle collision data can be a useful tool to supplement existing methods for monitoring wildlife populations, which will be relevant for the management of these populations. We point to important shortcomings in both animal–vehicle collision and hunting bag data and provide recommendations on how to improve their accuracy in the future, to be applicable for a broader range of species.

BackgroundAntimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs are critical in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In Zambia, there is little information regarding the capacity of hospitals to establish and implement AMS programs. The objective of this study was to conduct a baseline assessment of WHO core elements for an AMS program implementation in eight hospitals in Zambia.Materials and methodsWe conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study from September 2023 to December 2023 using a self-scoring Periodic National and Healthcare Facility Assessment Tool from the World Health Organization (WHO) policy guidance on integrated AMS activities in human health. Eight public hospitals were surveyed across the five provinces of Zambia. Data was analyzed using the WHO self-scoring tool and thematic analysis.ResultsOverall, 62.5% (6/8) of the facilities scored low (below 60%) in implementing AMS programs. Most facilities had challenges with reporting AMS feedback within the hospital (average score = 46%), Drugs and Therapeutics Committee (DTC) functionality (average score = 49%), AMS actions (average score = 50%), education and training (average score = 54%), and leadership commitment to AMS activities (average score = 56%). The overall score for all AMS core elements was average (56%). All the hospitals (100%) did not have an allocated budget for AMS programs. Finally, there were neither antibiograms to guide antimicrobial utilization nor AMS-trained staff in more than 50% of the hospitals surveyed.ConclusionThis study found low AMS implementation in these public hospitals, especially where DTCs were non-functional. The identified challenges and gaps require urgent attention for sustainable multidisciplinary AMS programs.

Attitude, Practices, Knowledge, Toxoplasmosis, Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania ,Medicine ,Medicine (General) ,R5-920 - Abstract
Background: Toxoplasmosis is among the globally neglected zoonotic diseases caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Humans get infected after ingesting or coming into contact with oocysts from the feces of infected cats. Illiteracy about the infection is one of the significant risk factors for its transmission. The study aimed to determine the community knowledge, attitudes, and practices that influence toxoplasmosis transmission in Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design, which was done from February to April 2023. Semi-structured questionnaires collected data on 139 respondents' demographics, practices, knowledge, and attitudes regarding toxoplasmosis. The chi-square test was used to assess the statistical association between variables at a p-value of < 0.05. Results: Out of 139 recruited respondents, only 18.0% of respondents were aware of Toxoplasmosis. The study revealed several risk factors for Toxoplasmosis transmission, whereby 63.1% of the cat owners didn't deworm their cats regularly, 70.8% didn't clean the cat kennels, and 53.1% didn't wash their hands after cleaning kennels and touching a cat. Furthermore, out of all respondents, about two-thirds didn't drink treated water and 87.8% ate raw vegetables as salads. The study revealed both negative and positive attitudes concerning Toxoplasmosis, where 64.7% of respondents thought that cats cannot transmit pathogens to humans and 66.2% did not agree with people interacting with stray cats, respectively. There was an association of awareness of the disease's existence with high education levels (P value = 0.001) and sex (females) (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The study revealed a low awareness of the existence of the infection despite the higher interaction of cats with humans in the study area. We recommend the provision of public health education focusing on how the disease is transmitted, the relationship of the disease with cats, the management of cat feces, clinical signs of the disease, its treatment, and control.

This study was aimed to determine the effect of CaCl2 on the motility and viability of stallion spermatozoa during different incubation temperatures. Experimental samples were prepared by diluting the ejaculates (n = 10) from three uniformly housed and fed breeding stallions with six different concentrations of CaCl2 (A: 0.1125, B: 0.225, C: 0.45, D: 0.938, E: 1.25, and F: 1.875 mg/mL). The control samples (CON) were prepared by diluting ejaculate only with physiological solution. Samples were divided into two aliquots for analyses at different storage temperatures (5 °C and 37 °C). The motility parameters were analysed by Computer Assisted Semen Analysis system at several time intervals (0, 1, 2 and 3 h) and the viability was assessed using a mitochondrial toxicity test (MTT) realized at the end of incubation at both temperatures. Addition of CaCl2 to stallion semen showed significant effect on motility parameters, especially in the highest concentrations at 5 °C. Significant objectionable effect of CaCl2 on both total and progressive motility was observed at temperature 37 °C compared to control sample. However, results of velocity curved line in samples C, D and F at time 1 h and also at time 2 h in sample F showed significant positive effect of CaCl2. Sperm viability in experimental samples did not show a significant difference compared to the control at either 5 °C or 37 °C. The results of this study did not confirm essential effect of calcium on reproductive parameters of stallion. To conclude, our study demonstrated that the effect of CaCl2 on stallion sperm motility differs in a dose-dependent manner; however, the overall impact on motility parameters does not seem to be beneficial.

This study proposes a bus prioritisation strategy at signalised intersections to enhance public transport reliability and attractiveness. Nowadays, bus prioritisation at intersections is conducted according to a first-come, first-served principle, lacking compatibility with future vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. A framework for prioritising buses based on their delay and occupancy was developed and tested in a SUMO microscopic traffic simulation subnetwork of the city of Ingolstadt. Buses are prioritised using a 25-level hierarchy. Four degrees of prioritisation interventions are implemented based on bus priority levels with signal cycles adjusted to advance preferred green phases. The timing of the prioritisation is based on an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) prediction that considers past speed and travel time data as well as bus stops that are on the way to the intersection. The prioritisation logic was tested in simulation scenarios with on- and off-peak conditions and with several buses requesting priority and varying degrees of priority. The results show that the developed prioritisation concept works, and prioritised buses benefit from a strong reduction in their travel times (up to 87 %) and number of stops. Buses with lower priority levels may experience deterioration in their travel time (up to 126 %) when arriving at the same time as a high-priority bus, but considering the fewer affected passengers and smaller delay, this seems acceptable.

Background Coronary atherosclerosis detected by imaging is a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk. However, imaging involves large resources and exposure to radiation. The aim was, therefore, to test whether nonimaging data, specifically data that can be self‐reported, could be used to identify individuals with moderate to severe coronary atherosclerosis. Methods and Results We used data from the population‐based SCAPIS (Swedish CardioPulmonary BioImage Study) in individuals with coronary computed tomography angiography (n=25 182) and coronary artery calcification score (n=28 701), aged 50 to 64 years without previous ischemic heart disease. We developed a risk prediction tool using variables that could be assessed from home (self‐report tool). For comparison, we also developed a tool using variables from laboratory tests, physical examinations, and self‐report (clinical tool) and evaluated both models using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, external validation, and benchmarked against factors in the pooled cohort equation. The self‐report tool (n=14 variables) and the clinical tool (n=23 variables) showed high‐to‐excellent discriminative ability to identify a segment involvement score ≥4 (area under the curve 0.79 and 0.80, respectively) and significantly better than the pooled cohort equation (area under the curve 0.76, P

- Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse definitions linked to correlation and regression in 16 Spanish high school textbooks. The concepts of functional and statistical dependence, covariance, correlation, correlation coefficient, regression, regression model, lineal regression, regression line, determination coefficient and goodness of fit were identified as relevant. For each of these concepts, we study the way in which they are defined (either the operational or structural definition or by using examples) and their use within the topic of discussion. We concluded that the presentation is sometimes incomplete or, in part, erroneous. Also, some of them use concepts with the same status as other, nevertheless, are not equivalent. The frequency of mitochondrial diseases (MD) has been scarcely documented, and only a few studies have reported data in certain specific geographical areas. In this study, we arranged a nationwide call in Spain to obtain a global estimate of the number of cases. A total of 3274 cases from 49 Spanish provinces were reported by 39 centres. Excluding duplicated and unsolved cases, 2761 patients harbouring pathogenic mutations in 140 genes were recruited between 1990 and 2020. A total of 508 patients exhibited mutations in nuclear DNA genes (75% paediatric patients) and 1105 in mitochondrial DNA genes (33% paediatric patients). A further 1148 cases harboured mutations in the MT-RNR1 gene (56% paediatric patients). The number of reported cases secondary to nuclear DNA mutations increased in 2014, owing to the implementation of next-generation sequencing technologies. Between 2014 and 2020, excepting MT-RNR1 cases, the incidence was 6.34 (95% CI: 5.71-6.97) cases per million inhabitants at the paediatric age and 1.36 (95% CI: 1.22-1.50) for adults. In conclusion, this is the first study to report nationwide epidemiological data for MD in Spain. The lack of identification of a remarkable number of mitochondrial genes necessitates the systematic application of high-throughput technologies in the routine diagnosis of MD.

- Abstract

- Abstract
With the introduction of section 3 in article 65 of the Spanish Penal Code by Organic Law 15/2003 of 25 November, the Spanish legislator established a legal regulation to the old and discussed problem of the legal consequences that should be recognized to the participation of strangers (extranei) in special offences, that is, in offences where a certain condition is required to be principal. This paper analyses the decisions of our jurisprudence on the problem regarding the quantum of the penalty to be imposed to the extraneus who participates in a special crime, whether proper or improper, related to the exercise of a public function. Particular attention is devoted to the reason which justifies the optional reduction of the sentence of certain necessary cooperators and inducers extranei in a special crime, compared to other cases in which, in the opinion of our legislator, such reduction of the sentence cannot be appreciated.

- Abstract
In this PhD thesis work, the results obtained from the research on micro- and nanostructuresof zinc germanate (Zn2GeO4) are shown and discussed. This material is a wide bandgapsemiconductor, member of the transparent conducting oxide (TCO) family, which presentsseveral physical properties that make it a potential candidate for its integration in differentoptoelectronic or energy storage devices. The scope of applications of Zn2GeO4 can be extended or improved by controllingthe dimensions and morphology, as well as intrinsic defects and doping with impurities. Therefore, in this work, different synthesis or growth methods were employed in orderto achieve Zn2GeO4 structures with the desired dimensions, morphologies and physicalproperties. Thus, by means of the physical growth method of thermal evaporation, usingthe vapor-solid (VS) mechanism, both elongated Zn2GeO4 micro- and nanostructures wereobtained. This method was also used to dope the Zn2GeO4 structures by diffusion, includingthe dopant impurities during the growth stage. On the other hand, Zn2GeO4 nanocrystalswere synthesized via the chemical precipitation method...

- Abstract
ME) are the most common cause of adverse events (AE), which can lead to patient injury and even death, as well as involve significant health costs. No errorfree systems exist, and therefore the fundamental objective of clinical safety is to minimise risks and potential errors, thereby making it easier for processes to be conducted correctly. Patient safety is a priority for health authorities. In Spain, initiatives to improve patient safety have recently been developed by the Ministry of Health, Social Services, and Equality and by Autonomous Communities, scientific societies, and other organizations and institutions. Different types of actions and Safe Medication Practices have been implemented in hospitals. Nevertheless, the degree of implementation is still low, which is similar to the situation in the USA and other countries. The Quality Plans of the Spanish National Health System and the World Health Organization (WHO) include the creation of multidisciplinary Working Groups within each specialty among their recommendations to improve patient safety.Safety working groups are multidisciplinary teams that meet periodically to systematically analyse safety incidents in clinical units or services in order to establish relevant prevention measures. The active involvement of pharmacists in these groups is needed to improve the safety of all the processes in the medication use system. For example, the benefits of pharmaceutical intervention have been described in different studies, which have found that pharmacists' recommendations achieved an acceptance rate of 39.0% to 91.6% among prescribers...

- Abstract
Background: In view of the unfavourable results of the HLS-EU Project in Spain and given that there are hardly any studies about health literacy (HL) in adolescents, it was proposed as main objective to determine the degree of HL of adolescents after Obligatory Secondary Education (OSE) and the educational necessities which they perceive in Health Education (HE). Methods: Observational descriptive crosssectional study with students in their first year of Upper Secondary Education for the academic year 2018/2019 from Healthcare Area V (Asturias). It was an equi-probabilistic one-stage cluster sampling, selecting 12 classrooms with 323 students. The HLSEU- Q16 questionnaire was used to measure the HL and a self-designed one about educational necessities, which was validated by the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture. A descriptive and Bayesian inference analysis was performed in R 3.5.2. Results: 206 individuals were studied. HL proved sufficient in 55.8%, problematic in 40.3% and inadequate in 3.9%. A 98.6% considered training in HE necessary, preferring workshops and one-time talks (58.7%). HL only showed relation with self-perceived health, and not with sex, mothers’/fathers’/guardians’ educational level nor having received HE. Conclusions: Almost half of adolescents got problematic or inadequate HL, which relates with health risk behaviours and worse use of health resources, according to the evidence.

Abstract The presence of water badly affects the moisture susceptibility of the reclaimed asphalt Foamed Bituminous Mix (FBM). The present study is mainly emphasized to assess the moisture susceptibility of reclaimed asphalt FBM, Where RAP is being incorporated as a replacement of fresh aggregates. Moisture susceptibility of the mix is evaluated in terms of tensile strength ratio (TSR) and resilient modulus ratio, subjected to different conditioning procedures namely AASHTO T283, modified IDOT, TG-2 guidelines, and MIST. Further data analytics and regression modeling are also carried out to determine the moisture susceptibility of the mix and to check the statistics among the variables. The findings show that the incorporation of RAP in the FBM improves moisture resistance. Further, FBM containing 100% RAP shows the least moisture susceptibility in terms of TSR and Mr ratio irrespective of any conditioning type. Moreover, MIST conditioning may be preferred to assess the moisture sensitivity as it simulates the field pore pressure effects. Further, mathematical analysis is carried out to predict the moisture susceptibility of mix. Adjusted R square coefficient indicates a better fit of the prediction model developed. Overall, the study may be helpful to highway professionals in analyzing the conditioning procedures and determining the moisture sensitivity of the reclaimed asphalt Foamed Bituminous Mix.

Abstract Background Reports at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic suggested differences in COVID-19-associated mortality between individuals with serious mental disorders (SMD) and the population at large. Aim To compare the pattern of COVID-19-associated mortality in individuals with and without SMD in Sweden over the two main pandemic years. Methods We compared the pattern of COVID-19-associated mortality in individuals with and without SMD in Sweden during 2020 and 2021. For SMD, we included psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, and severe depression. The analysis was based on summary data from the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare covering the entire adult Swedish population. Results The overall relative risk (RR) for experiencing a COVID-19-associated death was 1.66 (CI 1.50–1.83; p
