Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been chiefly linked with substantial respiratory complications. However, emerging studies have brought attention to the occurrence of severe muscle inflammation (myositis) related to COVID-19, potentially leading to multi-organ failure and increased mortality. Myositis is generally characterized by heightened serum creatine kinase (CK) levels. Acute myositis is characterized by an infiltration of viruses into calf muscle fibers, which may cause a subsequent inflammatory response leading to calf muscle pain. Symptomatic and supportive management, along with explanation and reassurance, is all that is required in managing this condition. While the association between myositis and severe outcomes has been recognized in adults, it remains less understood in the pediatric population. The current retrospective study, conducted at Policlinico San Marco University Hospital in Catania, aimed to analyze clinical and laboratory factors associated with myositis in pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Between January 2022 and January 2023, ten pediatric patients diagnosed with myositis and SARS-CoV-2 infection were evaluated. The study highlighted clinical manifestations such as fever, calf muscle pain, and abnormal gait. Lab results showed elevated CK levels among other findings. All patients underwent treatment, with the majority recovering without complications. A notable correlation was observed between CK levels, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and the urea/creatinine ratio (UCR). The study also discusses potential pathophysiological mechanisms behind SARS-CoV-2's impact on skeletal muscles, emphasizing an indirect inflammatory response. Our findings underscore that while myositis in children with SARS-CoV-2 infection appears to follow a benign and self-limiting trajectory, it is crucial to monitor specific markers for early intervention and management. Abstract

Infectious diseases still threaten the global community, especially in resource-limited countries. An accurate diagnosis is paramount to proper patient and public health management. Identification of many microbes still relies on manual microscopic examination, a time-consuming process requiring skilled staff. Thus, artificial intelligence (AI) has been exploited for identification of microorganisms. A systematic search was carried out using electronic databases looking for studies dealing with the application of AI to pathology microbiology specimens. Of 4596 retrieved articles, 110 were included. The main applications of AI regarded malaria (54 studies), bacteria (28), nematodes (14), and other protozoa (11). Most publications examined cytological material (95, 86%), mainly analyzing images acquired through microscope cameras (65, 59%) or coupled with smartphones (16, 15%). Various deep-learning strategies were used for the analysis of digital images, achieving highly satisfactory results. The published evidence suggests that AI can be reliably utilized for assisting pathologists in the detection of microorganisms. Further technologic improvement and availability of datasets for training AI-based algorithms would help expand this field and widen its adoption, especially for developing countries.

Abstract

In strongly correlated electron systems the intricate interplay between electronic correlation effects and the tendency to form bands leads to a wealth of fascinating physical phenomena. The theoretical description of such systems is extremely complex and cannot be tackled exactly, so that ingenious modelling based on approximations must be utilized. Experiments are of utmost importance in this regard, since they provide a way to test and verify models, or to help devise better ones. This Dissertation deals with strongly correlated uranium intermetallic systems. The interesting phases they can adopt include heavy fermion behaviour, unconventional superconductivity, hidden and multipolar order, and exotic induced magnetism. Here the hybridization between the 5f states and the conduction electrons drives the physics. The description of the 5f states is therefore of utmost importance. However, since there is no clear hierarchy of interactions like Coulomb repulsion, spin-orbit coupling, hopping and crystal-field, the modelling is difficult. This is in strong contrast to the more spatially localized 4f states of, e.g., cerium compounds. It is far from clear how to quantitatively describe the electronic structure of uranium intermetallics and whether, for example, an itinerant band approach or an impurity-type model, taking local degrees of freedom explicitly into account, would be a better starting point. In intermetallics, the situation is aggravated by the fact that the modelling lacks important pieces of information. This is not least due to the fact that understanding the formal valence, the filling of the 5f shell, and the relevant symmetries of the $5f$ electrons are experimentally demanding tasks. Abstract

Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria continues to pose a significant threat to public health worldwide, particularly in endemic areas. While the majority of cases can be effectively treated and cured, recurrences of P. falciparum malaria are not uncommon and can occur years following initial exposure. This phenomenon adds a new level of complexity to the management and prevention of the disease. The present study describes the compelling clinical case of a patient who contracted malaria despite not having been in an endemic region for over a decade. The patient had previously been infected and treated for the same disease. With low parasitemia, the patient was successfully treated with anti-malarial drugs; however, certain aspects of his medical history remained unclear. The present study also discusses the possibility that this case represents P. falciparum recrudescence or cryptic malaria, drawing on existing literature to contextualize the findings. The case presented herein highlights the need for continued vigilance in the diagnosis and treatment of P. falciparum malaria, particularly in instances of recurrence. En el marco de la prevención, con el fin de generar estrategias sostenibles quecontribuyan a resguardar el bienestar psicológico de los y las docentes, es necesarioidentificar aquellos factores estresores que se advierten como elementos permanentes en lasexigencias vinculadas a la labor académica, y a partir de ello, determinar qué estrategias deafrontamiento resultan exitosas al momento de enfrentar los procesos de adaptaciónimplicados en el retorno a la presencialidad.El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar las estrategias de afrontamiento utilizadaspor los y las docentes de la Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins, para abordar el retorno a clasespresenciales de manera de generar instancias sistemáticas y colegiadas como red de apoyo yaprendizaje entre pares.El enfoque es cuantitativo con un alcance descriptivo respecto del fenómeno analizado. Lamuestra seleccionada la conforman 217 docentes a quienes se les aplicó el cuestionarioCOPE-28 de afrontamiento y una encuesta sobre estresores administrativos, académicos yexternos. De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos, se identifica la falta de tiempo comoprincipal estresor y la estrategia de afrontamiento activo como la más utilizada.
