Abstract

Most Nagorno-Karabakh War literature emphasises the role of underlying nationalism and ineffective central government intervention within Soviet Armenia and Azerbaijan as the primary causes of ethnic conflict over the disputed territory following 1988; becoming a full interstate conflict as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. The suddenness with which nationalist surges in both Soviet republics mobilised both countries populations - then citizens of the same country - to kill each other has caused the prevalence of “Pandora’s Box” explanations. Whereby, violent nationalist radicalisation had emerged through a “double vacuum” of state power and ideology during Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika reforms. Although the determinism behind such reasoning - problematic in what is still an under-documented conflict –ensures questions remain surrounding how 70 years of ethnic coexistence rapidly transformed into ethnic conflict. Rather than compartmentalising the war as the result of failed leadership or ethnic hatreds, this study proposes an understanding of the conflict within its Soviet social context. The USSR’s ethnofederal institutional structure had produced conditions in soviet Transcaucasia that proved crucial enablers of Armenia and Azerbaijan’s contemporary enmity. Adopting a sociological lens, this study identifies vital areas of contention within political and social life in both Soviet Republics that played a direct role in causing ethnic violence following 1988. This implicates the very structure of the Soviet system as the chief cause of war while also explaining why Soviet collapse in the region was exceptionally violent compared to elsewhere. Utilising recently available primary evidence, it then demonstrates the applicability of this perspective through analysing Gorbachev’s failure to halt escalation despite the state still being strong in until late 1989. Abstract

This thesis discusses how the game of chess has been used as a metaphor for the power politics between the United States of America and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, particularly the period of the Reagan Doctrine (1985-1989). By looking at chess in relation to its visual, symbolic and political meanings, as well in relation to game theory and the key concepts of polarity and power politics, it argues that, although the ‘chess game metaphor’ has been used during the Cold War as a presentation for the international relations between the two superpowers in both cultural and political endeavors, the allegory obscures many nuances of the Cold War.

Abstract

The term “integral nationalism” has been widely acclaimed as a useful tool to describe the increasingly radical, discriminatory and authoritarian movements of the New Right from the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. By conceptualizing it, the American historian Carlton J. Hayes sought to capture the main tenets of the new type of nationalism. However, it is a matter of inquiry whether the concept coined within the Western context can be applied universally – regardless of geographical or cultural differences. For this reason, this thesis will investigate both the benefits and shortcomings of this approach in respect to the ideological developments in Eastern Europe in the early twentieth century. Specifically, in the course of analysis I would like to answer to what extent the historical concept of “integral nationalism” is applicable to the case of Roman Dmowski, a well-known Polish, nationalist thinker.

Abstract

Comparative results obtained by using classical treatment with electrolytes and combined treatment with electrolytes and polyelectrolytes (acrylamide copolymers) for potable water and waste water from vegetable oil plants and slaughter houses are presented. The polyelectrolytes used are obtained by combined electron beam and microwave-induced polymerization. They are available in a wide range of molecular weights and charge densities as well as with very low residual monomer content (under 0.02%). Index Terms--Acrylamide copolymers, electron beam, microwave, potable water and waste water treatment.

Abstract

Two selected fish species were sampled from 5 sites within the Maritsa River Basin in the period 2013-2014 with the aim to assess the effects of pesticide industry and intensive agriculture. Sampling sites were located in the middle of the Maritsa River Basin (near Plovdiv City, Bulgaria) and the watersheds of the Chepelarska and Stryama Rivers. Methods for analysis of certain priority substances and specific pollutants were applied in order to establish trends in the accumulation in fish, as required by the Directive 2008/60/EC and Directive 2008/105/EC. The reported data for organic pollutants are the first for the studied river basin. The selection of indicators (priority substances and specific pollutants) provides particular guidelines for planning future monitoring for assessment of river chemical and ecological status.

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a morbid and potentially mortal complication among patients hospitalized with acute medical illness. The potential of extended-duration thromboprophylaxis with the factor Xa inhibitor betrixaban to reduce the risk of stroke compared with standard-dose enoxaparin in this population was assessed in this retrospective APEX trial substudy (Acute Medically Ill Venous Thromboembolism Prevention With Extended Duration Betrixaban). Methods: Hospitalized acutely medically ill subjects (n=7513) were randomized in a double-dummy double-blind fashion to either extended-duration oral betrixaban (80 mg once daily for 35–42 days) or standard-dose subcutaneous enoxaparin (40 mg once daily for 10±4 days) for venous thromboprophylaxis. Stroke events were adjudicated by an independent, blinded event adjudication committee. Results: The mean age of study participants was 76 years; 45% were male; 13% had had a stroke; and 45% had congestive heart failure. There were fewer all-cause strokes (0.54% versus 0.97%; relative risk [RR]=0.56; 95% confidence interval, 0.32–0.96; P =0.032; adjusted RR=0.43%; number needed to treat=233) and ischemic strokes (0.48% versus 0.91%; RR=0.53; 95% confidence interval, 0.30–0.94; P =0.026; adjusted RR=0.43%; number needed to treat=233) among patients treated with betrixaban versus enoxaparin through 77 days of follow-up. Among high-risk subjects, those with congestive heart failure or ischemic stroke as their index event, betrixaban reduced the risk of all-cause stroke (0.72% versus 1.48%; RR=0.49; 95% confidence interval, 0.26–0.90; P =0.019; adjusted RR=0.76%; number needed to treat=132) and ischemic stroke (0.63% versus 1.38%; RR=0.45; 95% confidence interval, 0.24–0.87; P =0.014; adjusted RR=0.75%; number needed to treat=134) compared with enoxaparin. Conclusions: Among hospitalized medically ill patients, extended-duration betrixaban significantly reduced all-cause stroke and ischemic stroke through 77 days of follow-up Clinical Trial Registration: URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov . Abstract

High rates of chromosomal rearrangements have been found in the progeny of males containing a telomeric segment of Drosophila koepferae in a D. buzzatii genetic background. Experiments were conducted to determine whether this chromosomal instability could be elucidated by a phenomenon similar to P-M hybrid dysgenesis or by a generalized telomeric effect. Findings indicated that chromosomal instability is independent of the introgressed fragment.

Abstract

The accelerator-Driven-System (ADS) is very important to study the neutron field and radionuclide production inside simple-geometry uranium subcritical setups irradiated with high energy particle beams. A subcritical setup QUINTA was irradiated with the 660-MeV proton beam from Phasotron accelerator at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The radionuclide production in the region along the beam axis was investigated by the activation technique. The aim was to compare (n,x) with (p,x) reactions using activation detectors of 59Co and natPb, and compare experimental results with the calculated results using Monte Carlo simulation code MCNPX 2.7.

Abstract

Dental caries and periodontal disease are typical oral diseases frequently observed in patients with renal diseases. Tooth loss is an outcome of dental caries and periodontal disease, and the number of existing teeth is an indicator of oral health status. However, the association between the number of existing teeth and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has not been investigated in detail. This study aimed to investigate the association between oral health status, expressed by the number of existing teeth, and ESKD. We analyzed data from the second survey of the Longitudinal Evaluation of Multi-phasic, Odontological, and Nutritional Associations in Dentists, a cohort study conducted among members of the Japan Dental Association. From August 2016 to July 2017, self-administered questionnaires were mailed to 16,128 male dentists and 8,722 responded. Abstract

Introduction: At Wake Forest Baptist Health, an adult tumor lysis syndrome pocket card was created in order to optimize management of tumor lysis syndrome and outline specific recommendations for the use of rasburicase. Due to the increased use of rasburicase at our institution and its cost, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the utilization of rasburicase for the management of tumor lysis syndrome in pediatric and adult patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Methods: This was an observational, single-center, non-randomized, retrospective chart review conducted between September 2018 and August 2019. The primary objective was to evaluate the utilization of rasburicase and appropriateness for the management of tumor lysis syndrome in pediatric and adult patients based on the Wake Forest Baptist Health tumor lysis syndrome pocket card. The secondary objectives were to assess response to prophylactic and treatment doses of rasburicase and to quantify drug cost versus expense of rasburicase utilization. Results: Overall, 64 patients (57 adults and 7 pediatric patients) were included in the study. Rasburicase use for tumor lysis syndrome indication adhered to the pocket card 64% of the time. Appropriate fluids and/or allopurinol were initiated in only 34% of patients. For monitoring, 80% of patients had all necessary tumor lysis syndrome laboratory values collected after rasburicase administration. All 11 patients (17%) who received rasburicase in the outpatient setting did not have follow-up labs collected. Of the patients who had tumor lysis syndrome laboratory values collected post rasburicase, 39% were appropriately timed to accurately assess efficacy of rasburicase with the median time of laboratory monitoring after rasburicase being 6.5 h. Response was observed with rasburicase 3 mg (92%), 6 mg (100%), and weight-based dosing (100%). The wholesale acquisition cost per patient was $5203 (1101–10,406). The potential cost savings of using the 3 mg dose versus the 6 mg dose for the patients who did not meet tumor lysis syndrome treatment recommendations based on the Wake Forest Baptist Health pocket card was estimated to be $36,419.46. Conclusion: There are several opportunities for improvement in tumor lysis syndrome management and rasburicase utilization at our institution. This study will lead to the implementation of formal restrictions for rasburicase use and selection of rasburicase dose. Updating the rasburicase order panel to include appropriate prophylaxis and require input of uric acid level, populating pertinent tumor lysis syndrome laboratory values on the order verification screen for pharmacists to appropriately assess if rasburicase meets the institution restriction criteria, and providing education to providers on the appropriate ordering and timing of labs.
