Marine conservation design and fisheries management are increasingly integrating biophysical, socio-economic and governance considerations. Integrative approaches are adopted to achieve more effective, equitable, inclusive, and robust marine policies and practices. This paper describes a participatory process to co-produce biophysical, socio-economic, and governance principles to guide the design and management of marine reserves in three regions of Mexico: the Pacific region of the Baja California Peninsula, the Gulf of California, and the Mexican Caribbean. The process of co-producing the principles included convening a coordination team, reviewing the science, convening multi-stakeholder workshops, developing and communicating the principles with key practitioners and policy makers, and supporting uptake and application to policy and practice. Biophysical principles were related to: habitat representation and risk spreading; protecting critical, special and unique areas; incorporating connectivity; allowing time for recovery; adapting to changes in climate and ocean chemistry; and considering threats and opportunities. Socio-economic principles focused on: integrating the social context, local aspirations, and human-environment interactions; considering economic and non-economic uses, promoting an equitable distribution of costs and benefits, and respecting and maintaining cultural identity and diversity. Governance principles prioritized establishing and ensuring legitimacy and institutional continuity; implementing collaborative and adaptive management; and, promoting effective management. The paper also examines early efforts to implement the principles, next steps to promote further uptake and application in Mexico, and lessons learned from the process. Thus it provides insights into a practical process and a set of principles that are valuable to inform marine conservation and fisheries management processes elsewhere.

Abstract Highly paraffinic crudes were characterized by means of physico-chemical analysis (pour point, cloud point and API gravity) and hydrocarbon analysis (wax content, paraffin class-type separation, gel permeation chromatography and high temperature simulated distillation). Although all the studied samples were typical light crudes (32 - 43 API), their high paraffin content was responsible for solidification even above room temperature (33 - 48 C). Several commercial paraffin inhibitors were evaluated with these crudes, being pour point depression the selected activity criteria. Some products evidenced good activity when added to three of the crudes under study, while others induced insignificant changes in the pour point under similar dosages. Correlations between crude oil composition and paraffin inhibitors activity were assessed. The normal / cyclo+iso-paraffins ratio of the crudes that were not affected by the paraffin inhibitors was found higher. The molecular weight distribution (GPC) of the crudes sensitive to additives showed a bimodal character. Additionally, the Concentration of components with more than 24 carbon atoms was found lower than 39 % wt, as determined by simulated distillation. On the other hand, the crudes insensitive to the action of inhibitors displayed monomodal molecular weight distributions with larger contributions of heavy components (more than 52 % wt). Doping experiments carried out with Cl 3-C20 and C20-C44 paraffin extracts and using polarized light microscopy for cloud point determinations, supported the previous findings and permitted to assess the inefficiency of commercial paraffin inhibitors for crudes rich in C24+ alkanes. Grey mould caused by Botrytis cinerea is an endemic disease in greenhouse tomato crops in the Mediterranean Basin, where the scarcity of heating systems together with the winter weather conditions makes the use of fungicides necessary. The availability of fungicides for organic tomato production is limited, and traditionally, farmers have used copper-based formulations. In the present work, in vitro tests with twelve commercial formulations resulted in cinnamon extract and potassium hydrogen carbonate (PHC) showing high efficacy in the inhibition of B. cinerea growth. Both formulations were evaluated in on-farm greenhouse trials conducted for two seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021) in three greenhouses located in Almería, Spain. In terms of controlling Botrytis, PHC showed efficacy results comparable to or even better than those that have been obtained for copper oxychloride. Weather conditions outside and inside the greenhouse were conducive to the onset and development of the disease. Tomato variety selection and pruning practices (flush cuttings) were the main factors that reduced the use of copper-based formulations or any other fungicide to prevent grey mould infection. Smart and integrated management of the mentioned factors could lead to the substitution of copper to control Botrytis in the crop system studied here.

Abstract: Introduction: Continuous home oxygen therapy (CHOT), along with smoking cessation, is the first treatment that has been shown to increase the survival of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic hypoxemia. Objective: To determine survival in a cohort of COPD patients receiving CHOT and to analyze the main causes and risk factors associated with their mortality. Methods: Prospective study of a cohort of COPD patients receiving CHOT. Numerous variables, including survival and cause of death at the end of follow-up, were collected. Results: A total of 409 COPD patients receiving CHOT were included (85.6% men; mean age: 71.27 ± 9.74 years). Mean time of CHOT follow-up was 5.86 ± 3.24 years and median survival was 6 years (95% CI: 5.47-6.53). Mortality at the end of follow-up was 75.8%, the leading cause of death being respiratory (36.9%). Longer survival was significantly associated with lower age, correct CHOT compliance, absence of exacerbations in the previous year, use of long-acting anticholinergics (LAMA), less severe COPD, presence of sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome/obesity hypoventilation syndrome (SAHS/SHO), absence of malignant disease, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and kidney disease. Conclusions: The survival of COPD patients receiving CHOT was very long. The main causes of mortality were respiratory (36.9%). Independent predictors of mortality were age, presence of exacerbations in the previous year, previous diagnosis of cancer, and presence of cerebrovascular and renal disease.

The production of platelet-activating factor (PAF) by rat peritoneal cells was studied using as stimuli either monoclonal IgE, IgG1 or IgG2b anti-DNP (2,4-dinitrophenyl), and DNP-BSA. Peritoneal cells sensitized in vitro with any of these antibodies at concentrations higher than 10 nM and challenged with 1 microM DNP-BSA produced PAF. PAF production was also elicited by preformed IgE/ and IgG2b/DNP-BSA immune complexes, preferentially at a large antigen/antibody ratio. The production of PAF was unrelated to the activation of mast cells, since it occurred in populations depleted of mast cells by adherence to plastic dishes. Moreover, the release of [3H]serotonin from IgE-sensitized mast cells showed a time-course more rapid than PAF production and occurred in cells sensitized with IgE at concentrations lower than those required for PAF formation. In contrast, peritoneal cells sensitized with IgG1 and IgG2b failed to release [3H]serotonin. Rat peritoneal cells showed a significant ability to catabolize PAF by intracellular PAF-acetylhydrolase in view of both the amounts of enzyme activity assayed in cellular homogenates, and the 15-fold increase on controls of PAF quantities detected in peritoneal cells treated with phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), a known inhibitor of PAF-acetylhydrolase. The PAF activity produced upon PMSF addition showed a retention time on reverse-phase HPLC which suggests structural identity to PAF produced by either immunological challenge or ionophore A23187. These data suggest that PAF formed during rat passive anaphylaxis reactions depends on the activation of mononuclear phagocytes. This production may be triggered by two types of low affinity receptors: Fc epsilon RII/CD23 and Fc gamma R. The ability of peritoneal cells to catabolize PAF by intracellular acetylhydrolase seems unaffected by immunological stimulation.

Although it is well-established that inositol-containing lipids serve as precursors of intracellular second messenger molecules in chromaffin cells, we describe some findings that show the formation of diacylglycerol from phosphatidylcholine in response to agonist-mediated stimulation. Stimulation of chromaffin cells by acetylcholine produced a high turnover of phosphatidylcholine, as suggested by the release of [3H]choline derived from [3H]-phosphatidylcholine in experiments performed with [3H]choline chloride-prelabeled cells. An enhanced breakdown of phosphatidylcholine was also inferred from the finding of an increased formation of [3H]diacylglycerol in chromaffin cells prelabeled with [3H]glycerol. The diacylglycerol mass that accumulated after stimulation showed a distinct temporal course and seemed to exceed the mass that has been reported to be derived from phosphatidylinositol. In keeping with the purported origin from phosphatidylcholine, diacylglycerol showed a high content in [3H]oleate molecular species. Phospholipase D activity measurements and experiments performed in the presence of propranolol (an inhibitor of phosphatidic acid:phosphohydrolase) suggested that phosphatidylcholine is hydrolyzed by a phospholipase D activity, producing phosphatidic acid, which is subsequently degraded to diacylglycerol, rather than by a phospholipase C. Incubation of chromaffin cells in the presence of atropine before addition of acetylcholine showed complete inhibition of the increased formation of [3H]-diacylglycerol, whereas d-tubocurarine failed to do so. Taken together, these results suggest that acetylcholine activates phosphatidylcholine breakdown and diacylglycerol formation in chromaffin cells via a muscarinic-type receptor.

Philosophy ,Isotonic ,Art history - Abstract
Introduction I spent three wonderful years in Professor Sir Andrew Huxley's laboratory at University College, London. When I arrived, I was very surprised and glad to find that he not only could understand my broken and poorly pronounced English, but that he was always extremely patient and calm with my ignorance, and with my naive questions. Thus, very soon he made me feel as if I were at home in a warm, friendly, and productive atmosphere. His kindness, superb knowledge, intelligence, and memory were continuously evident as a marvelous deep fountain from which to learn and acquire education. This education went beyond the walls of the laboratory into many areas of life and was soon complemented by the deep mark that Richenda Huxley also made on my outlook and education. I will never forget one day when Professor Huxley and I were discussing some of my experiments on isotonic recorded contractures, he very soon said something like, “Well, if you have an isotonic lever with such a spring and friction, then the sarcomere length that will be reached during the contracture would be . . . 2.4 μm”. It took him around two seconds to figure out that sarcomere length! After he left I measured the sarcomere length reached during one of such experiments, and it was 2.41 μm! It took me three days to arrive at the same figure he computed in those few seconds in his brain. As we used to say in the laboratory, “His brain goes click, click, click, and the right answer from these elaborate calculations comes out within seconds”.

The aim of this study is to examine the ability of resveratrol to counteract hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]-induced genetic damage, as well as the possible pathways associated with this protection. Hsd:ICR male mice are divided into groups of the following five individuals each: (a) control 1, distilled water; (b) control 2, ethanol 30%; (c) resveratrol, 50 mg/kg by gavage; (d) CrO3, 20 mg/kg intraperitoneally; (e) resveratrol + CrO3, resveratrol administered 4 h prior to CrO3. The assessment is performed on peripheral blood. Micronuclei (MN) kinetics are measured from 0 to 72 h, while 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) adduct repair levels, endogenous antioxidant system biomarkers, and apoptosis frequency were quantified after 48 h. Resveratrol reduces the frequency of Cr(VI)-induced MN and shows significant effects on the 8-OHdG adduct levels, suggesting that cell repair could be enhanced by this polyphenol. Concomitant administration of resveratrol and Cr(VI) results in a return of the activities of glutathione peroxidase and catalase to control levels, accompanied by modifications of superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione levels. Thus, antioxidant properties might play an important role in resveratrol-mediated inhibition of Cr(VI)-induced oxidant genotoxicity. The increase in apoptotic cells and the decrease in necrosis further confirmed that resveratrol effectively blocks the actions of Cr(VI).

Introduction: Ischemic tolerance (IT) refers to a state where cells are resistant to the damaging effects caused by periods of ischemia. In a clinical scenario, the IT phenomenon would be activated by a recent transient ischemic attack (TIA) before an ischemic stroke (IS). The characterization of inflammatory protein expression patterns will contribute to improved understanding of IT.Methods: A total of 477 IS patients from nine hospitals, recruited between January 2011 and January 2016, were included in the current study and divided in three groups: 438 (91.9%) patients without previous TIA (group 1), 22 (4.6%) patients who suffered TIA 24 h before IS (group 2), and 17 (3.5%) patients who suffered TIA between 24 h and 7 days prior to IS (group 3). An inflammatory biomarker panel (IL-6, NT-proBNP, hsCRP, hs-Troponin, NSE, and S-100b) on plasma and a cytokine antibody array was performed to achieve the preconditioning signature potentially induced by TIA phenomena. Primary outcome was modified rankin scale (mRs) score at 90 days. Results: Recent previous TIA was associated with better clinical outcome at 90 days (median mRS of group 1: 2.0 [1.0–4.0]; group 2: 2.0 [0.0–3.0]; group 3: 1.0 [0–2.5]; p = 0.086) and smaller brain lesion (group 1: 3.7 [0.7–18.3]; group 2: 0.8 [0.3–8.9]; group 3: 0.6 [0.1–5.5] mL; p = 0.006). All inflammation biomarkers were down regulated in the groups of recent TIA prior to IS compared to those who did not suffer a TIA events. Moreover, a cytokine antibody array revealed 30 differentially expressed proteins between the three groups. Among them, HRG1-alpha (Fold change 74.4 between group 1 and 2; 74.2 between group 1 and 3) and MAC-1 (Fold change 0.05 between group 1 and 2; 0.06 between group 1 and 3) expression levels would better stratify patients with TIA 7 days before IS. These two proteins showed an earlier inflammation profile that was not detectable by the biomarker panel. Conclusion: Inflammatory pathways were activated by transient ischemic attack, however the period of time between this event and a further ischemic stroke could be determined by a protein signature that would contribute to define the role of ischemic tolerance induced by TIA.

The idea is that migration and refuge in the 21st century are expressions of the real DNA of the world-system led by financial capital, which has caused expulsions. These phenomena become more complex at a time when countries with strong migratory attraction, such as the United States, are building physical and virtual walls, which are accompanied by legislative measures and agreements with other countries for the entry of people into their country. This is part of a larger geopolitical agenda of the White House that seeks to regain its global hegemony to reposition itself against a world that is advancing to multipolarity.

Because of its reduced dimensions and its location, surrounded by three continents, the Mediterranean Sea could be especially vulnerable to climate change effects. An increase of the water column stratification could inhibit winter mixing and reduce the frequency and intensity of convection processes which inject nutrients into the photic layer and are responsible for the ventilation of deep waters. In this context, the long-term monitoring of the Mediterranean waters is a basic task. The RADMED project is a monitoring program that covers the waters from the eastern side of the Gibraltar Strait to the Catalan and Balearic Seas. This project was initiated in 2007, merging some previous programs, some of them initiated in 1992. The main objective of this project is to establish average distributions, ranges of variability and long-term trends for physical, and biochemical variables which could be considered as indicative of the environmental state of the sea. The present work analyses nutrient, chlorophyll and oxygen time series from 2007 to 2015 in some cases and from 1992 in other cases. The current analyses show a clear trophic gradient in the RADMED area. Nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations and the intensity of the deep chlorophyll maximum decrease northeastward. The deep chlorophyll maximum depth increases to the northeast. The Balearic and Catalan Seas show a clear seasonal pattern with maximum surface concentrations for nutrients and chlorophyll in winter/spring, associated with winter mixing. On the contrary, the Alboran Sea does not show such a clear seasonal cycle, probably because of the existence of permanent upwelling processes acting along the whole year. The Atlantic Water occupying the upper part of the water column shows a Redfield N:P ratio close to or lower than 16, indicating no phosphorus limitation. Finally, chlorophyll concentrations seem to have increased from 1992 to 2015 in the Alboran Sea, while no long-term changes could be established for the rest of the variables and geographical areas. Pisum sativum L. ssp. arvense, is colloquially called tirabeque or mangetout because it is eaten whole; its pods are recognized as a delicatessen in cooking due to its crunch on the palate and high sweetness. Furthermore, this legume is an important source of protein and antioxidant compounds. Quality control in this species requires the analysis of a large number of samples using costly and laborious conventional methods. For this reason, a non-chemical and rapid technique as near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) was explored to determine its physicochemical quality (color, firmness, total soluble solids, pH, total polyphenols, ascorbic acid and protein content). Pod samples from different cultivars and grown under different fertigation treatments were added to the NIRS analysis to increase spectral and chemical variability in the calibration set. Modified partial least squares regression was used for obtaining the calibration models of these parameters. The coefficients of determination in the external validation ranged from 0.50 to 0.88. The RPD (standard deviation to standard error of prediction ratio) and RER (standard deviation to range) were variable for quality parameters and showed values that were characteristic of equations suitable for quantitative prediction and screening purposes, except for the total soluble solid calibration model.

Soil mulching has advantages for horticultural crops, from both agronomic and phytosanitary points of view. The most common material used is polyethylene (PE); however, promising alternatives from the circular economy exist, such as straw (ST) and biodegradable biopolymers (BBs). The effect of the three aforementioned mulches was evaluated and compared to non-mulched soil in a Mediterranean greenhouse for two years of an organic tomato crop. Physical (moisture and temperature) and physicochemical properties of the soil, in addition to crop yield and the effect of the mulches on weed control, were assessed. Additionally, the deterioration of plastic mulches was assessed. The temperature was higher in the mulched soils, but few differences were found between soil and BB at the end of the second cycle. Evaporation was lower in mulched soil, in general, without big differences among the types of mulch. Crop yield did not show differences. At the end of the trials, of the 16 physicochemical variables evaluated, only a slight increase in pH was detected in the ST-mulched plots. BB film degradation reached 5.6% and 6.7% of the total surface at the end of the first and second cycles, respectively. Weeds were equally limited for PE, BB, and ST mulches, but cereal seeds contained within the straw germinated randomly all over the crop cycle. In summary, straw and biodegradable plastic mulches offered the same benefits as conventional PE mulch. Therefore, they can be considered a feasible and more sustainable option, in addition to being consistent with the principles of the bioeconomy.

Objective: To estimate the economic impact of the introduction of olaparib in the Spanish National Health System as maintenance monotherapy in patients with BRCA-mutation positive high-grade serous ovarian cancer. Method: A budget impact model was developed from the Spanish NHS perspective and a time horizon of 5 years for four treatment lines. The model included prevalent and incident patients estimated according to Spanish epidemiological data. Patients moved between treatment lines according to the progression-free survival and overall survival curves obtained from the respective clinical trials. Only direct costs (€ 2017) were considered: pharmacological, administration, adverse effects and genetic tests. The robustness of the model was verified by a univariate sensitivity analysis. Results: The use of olaparib meant that, after 5 years, 6% fewer patients progressed to later lines compared to scenario without olaparib, remaining longer in the second line and delaying the initiation of subsequent lines. The total estimated budgetary impact ranged between € 1.6 and € 5.4 million (1-5 years). The economic impact associated to the introduction of olaparib is partially offset by the lower cost of chemotherapy, related adverse events, and palliative care in patients with olaparib than in patients without it. Conclusions: Olaparib as maintenance treatment in patients with BRCA-mutation positive high-grade serous ovarian cancer increases progression-free survival and delays the use of subsequent chemotherapy, with an budgetary impact for the Spanish National Health System of 5.4 million euros after 5 years.

- Abstract
Background: Many types of cancer are associated with polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin system. Our aim was to assess possible association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the angiotensin II receptor types 1 (A168G), and 2 (T1247G and A5235G) with breast cancer. Patients and Methods: 242 participating subjects were genotyped and allocated to case or control groups. Results: Genotype distribution (in %) was: for AGTR1 (A168G): AA, AG, GG = 61, 30, 09 for cases, and 69, 25, 06 for controls (p = 0.55); for AGTR2 (T1247G): TT, TG, GG = 84, 12, 04 for cases, and 81, 17, 02 for controls (p = 0.45); for AGTR2 (A5235G): AA, AG, GG = 32, 67, 01 for cases, and 53, 28, 19 for controls (p < 0.0001). Women carrying genotypes AA/AG in the intronic region of angiotensin II type 2 receptor had an 11-fold higher risk of breast cancer than GG carriers. Conclusions: Many types of cancer have been associated with polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin system. For SNP A5235G, the GG genotype seems to be protective against breast cancer. The other 2 SNPs showed no association. However, SNPs T1247G and A5235G were associated with at least 1 clinical variable, with G being a predictor of better outcome. The use of SNPs A5235G and T1247G (the latter to a lesser degree) as genetic markers should be considered. © 2014 S. Karger GmbH, Freiburg [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Senescent cells occur in adults with cirrhotic livers independent of the etiology. Aim: Investigate the presence rate of cellular senescence and expression of cell cycle check points in livers from children with end stage disease. Methodology/Principal Findings: Livers of five children aged three years or less undergoing liver transplantation due to tyrosinemia (n = 1), biliary atresia (n = 2), or fulminant hepatitis (n = 2) were analyzed for senescence associated β-galactosidase (SA-βgal) activity and p16INK4a, p21cip1 and p53. All livers displayed positive cellular staining for SA-βgal in the canals of Hering and interlobular biliary ducts. In the presence of cirrhosis (3/5 cases) SA-βgal was found at the cholangioles and hepatocytes surrounding the regenerative nodules. Children with fulminant hepatic failure without cirrhosis had significant ductular transformation with intense SA-βgal activity. No SA-βgal activity was evident in the fibrous septa. Staining for p53 had a similar distribution to that observed for SA-βgal. Staining for p16
INK4a and p21cip1 was positive in the explanted liver of the patient with tyrosinemia, in the hepatocytes, the canals of Hering, cholangioles and interlobular bile ducts. In the livers with fulminant hepatitis, p21cip1 staining occurred in the areas of ductular transformation and in the interlobular bile ducts. Conclusions/Significance: Cellular senescence in livers of children with end stage disease is associated with damage rather than corresponding to an age dependent phenomenon. Further studies are needed to support the hypothesis that these senescence markers correlate with disease progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Germination is an efficient and natural strategy that allows the modification of the nutritional value and the nutraceutical properties of seeds, enabling one to tailor the process according to its final use. This study aimed at optimization of germination conditions to produce novel lentil flours with improved nutritional and functional features. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied to model the effect of temperature (15–27 °C) and time (1–5 days) on different nutritional and quality parameters of lentil flours including proximate composition, content and profile of fatty acids, content of phytic acid, ascorbic acid and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), content and profile of phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, expected glycemic index (GI) and color during germination. As shown by RSM polynomial models, sprouting promoted the reduction of phytic acid content and enhanced the levels of ascorbic acid, GABA, insoluble phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity and expected GI, and modified the color of the resultant lentil flours. RSM optimization of germination temperature and time using desirability function revealed that the optimal process conditions to maximize the nutritional, bioactive and quality properties of sprouted lentil flours were 21 °C for 3.5 days.

The role of amebic cysteine proteinase(s) on the in vitro cytotoxic and cytolytic effects of axenic trophozoites of a virulent strain (HM-1) of Entamoeba histolytica has been studied using freshly isolated rat and hamster hepatocytes as target cells. The cytotoxic effect was defined as cell killing without loss of cell structure and the cytolytic effect as cell disintegration. Incubation experiments of axenic trophozoites with rat or hamster liver cells in the presence and absence of bovine serum, of several proteinase inhibitors, and of galactose, galactosamine, and cysteine, at various ameba:liver cell ratios, different temperatures, and for several time periods, suggest that amebic cysteine proteinase is not involved in the cytotoxic effect but is essential for the cytolytic effect. This suggestion is supported by additional observations made with Transwell chambers, which effectively prevent contact between amebas and target cells, and by experiments with a fraction of an extract of lysed amebas that contained most of their cysteine proteinase activity.

Arbitration is a procedure in which a problem is submitted by the parties to one or more people or arbitrators in order to obtain a binding solution to their dispute. It was mainly through the practice of arbitration that women in the Kingdom of Aragón could deliver justice between the 13th and 16th centuries. Most of these female arbitrators, either married or widowed, belonged to the nobility although there were also cases among the women of the urban elites. They mediated in all kinds of disputes; however, this paper focuses, in particular, on the resolution of violent cases which resulted in wounds and injuries.
