Abstract

Introduction Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquitoborne alphavirus indigenous to African countries, the Indian Subcontinent, and Southeast Asia, where it causes endemic and epidemic chikungunya (CHIK) fever [1]. Chikungunya infection is transmitted by biting mosquitoes belonging to the genus Aedes. Since the identification of the virus in the 1950s [2] in Africa, transmission to humans has been usually associated with bites of A. aegypti mosquitoes. In recent outbreaks occurring in the South-eastern islands of the Indian Ocean, transmission has also been associated with A. albopictus, also known as the “tiger mosquito.” This species is indigenous to Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific, and the Indian Ocean, but has recently spread to Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. [3]. Although tropical forests are considered to be their original habitat, A. aegypti and A. albopictus have developed the capacity to exploit artificial environments [4]. Besides the natural habitat consisting of tree holes filled with water and other small natural pools, they are capable of breeding in any artificial habitat with small reservoirs of stagnant water, such as vases, buckets, tires and other containers found around houses in urban and periurban areas.

Abstract

The presence of non-reproductive Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus females in the Mediterranean Sea was investigated through histological analysis of the gonads. Three hundred and twenty-six ovary samples were collected from adults captured at different locations in the Mediterranean Sea during the reproductive seasons between 1998 and 2008. Only three specimens were considered to be in a non-reproductive state: two of them were in a reabsorbing state showing ovaries with early vitellogenic oocytes and extensive α and β atresia of vitellogenic follicles; the third showed gonads with perinucleolar oocytes and was considered to be in a resting state. The low occurrence of non-reproductive individuals found in this study makes it unlikely that non-reproductive individuals aggregate with reproductive ones during their migration towards spawning grounds. Further research is suggested in order to investigate the potential presence of non-reproductive individuals on non-spawning grounds during the reproductive season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cyclic tensile tests at constant displacement rate have been performed on a syndiotactic polypropylene to study the effect of the loading history on its mechanical behavior. A test procedure was, at first, properly set up to take into account the inhomogeneous deformation occurring in the adopted dumb-bell specimen. A dependence of the material behavior on the loading history was observed up to yielding, as expected. Abstract

CACO-2 BBE was used to determine the response of a gastrointestinal epithelium to tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF). Incubation of CACO-2 BBE with TNF did not produce any effect on transepithelial resistance (TER) within the first 6 hr but resulted in a 40-50% reduction in TER and a 30% decrease in 1SC (short circuit current) relative to time-matched control at 24 hr. The decrease in TER was sustained up to 1 week following treatment with TNF and was not associated with a significant increase in the transepithelial flux of [14C]-D-mannitol or the penetration of ruthenium red into the lateral intercellular space. Dilution potential and transepithelial 22Na+ flux studies demonstrated that TNF-treatment of CACO-2 BBE cell sheets increased the paracellular permeability of the epithelium to Na+ and Cl-. The increased transepithelial permeability did not associate with an increase in the incidence of apoptosis. However, there was a TNF-dependent increase in [3H]-thymidine labeling that was not accompanied by a change in DNA content of the cell sheet. The increase in transepithelial permeability was concluded to be across the tight junction because: (i) 1 mM apical amiloride reduced the basolateral to apical flux of 22Na+, and (ii) dilution potential studies revealed a bidirectionally increased permeability to both Na+ and Cl-. These data suggest that the increase in transepithelial permeability across TNF-treated CACO-2 BBE cell sheets arises from an alteration in the charge selectivity of the paracellular conductive pathway that is not accompanied by a change in its size selectivity. 148. Coccolithophore communities in the Gulf of Manfredonia (Southern Adriatic Sea): Data from water and surface sediments

Abstract

Living coccolithophore distributions from the Gulf of Manfredonia (Southern Adriatic Sea) were investigated and comparedwith the coccolith assemblages in the underlying surface sediments. In total, 55 samples from 13 stations in four transects collected at the end of October 2000 were analyzed to determine spatial and vertical distribution of individual taxa in the coastal environment. At all stations, the maximum coccosphere densities were between 10m and 30m of water depth (maximum values were ~4x104 coccospheres per litre of seawater). Coccolithophore absolute abundances show a vertical stratification and spatial variation, as well as variable species diversity, increasing from the coast to the open sea and decreasing with depth. Different coccolithophore communities are recorded in the shallow and deep photic zone. Emiliania huxleyi, Syracosphaera spp., Rhabdosphaera spp., Coronosphaera spp., Umbellosphaera tenuis and holococcolithophores are present mainly in the surface waters, above the thermocline between 25-30m depth. In the deeper water samples, there is a significant increase in coccospheres of Florisphaera profunda. The coccolithophore cell density variability is compared with in situ measurements of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, nitrates and phosphates). Cell densities of all dominant taxa are most highly correlated with temperature variability. The low correlations of cell densities with nitrates and phosphates may be caused by insufficient sampling resolution, nutrient levels close to detection limits, or both. The comparison of the living assemblage with surface sediment records shows significant differences in the presence and abundance of some species. The recognised fossil record in the surface sediments ismainly represented by Cretaceous-Pleistocene reworked species, showing stronger dynamic processes at the bottom, such as terrigenous input and resuspension, than phytoplankton growth. Most marked correspondence between living and fossil assemblages has been found in the deeper and open sea sediments.

The article discusses secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, examining changes in the occurrence of self-reported SHS exposure at home and changes in exposure of nonsmoking children, adolescents, and adults. Data from two time periods is compared including 1988-1994 and 1999-2004. Topics include serum cotinine, a biologic indicator of SHS exposure, a need to continue surveillance of SHS exposure, and strategies to reduce children's SHS exposure. Also discussed are smaller declines of SHS exposure rates for children than adults.
