102. What is the Benefit of Code-domain NOMA in Massive MIMO?

Abstract

In overloaded Massive MIMO systems, wherein the number K of user equipments (UEs) exceeds the number of base station antennas M, it has recently been shown that non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can increase performance. This paper aims at identifying cases of the classical operating regime K < M, where code-domain NOMA can also improve the spectral efficiency of Massive MIMO. Particular attention is given to use cases in which poor favorable propagation conditions are experienced. Abstract

BackgroundAsian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) sexual and gender minorities (SGM) face unique challenges in mental health and accessing high-quality health care.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators for shared decision making (SDM) between AAPI SGM and providers, especially surrounding mental health.Research designInterviews, focus groups, and surveys.SubjectsAAPI SGM interviewees in Chicago (n=20) and San Francisco (n=20). Two focus groups (n=10) in San Francisco.MeasuresParticipants were asked open-ended questions about their health care experiences and how their identities impacted these encounters. Follow-up probes explored SDM and mental health. Participants were also surveyed about attitudes towards SGM disclosure and preferences about providers. Transcripts were analyzed for themes and a conceptual model was developed.ResultsOur conceptual model elucidates the patient, provider, and encounter-centered factors that feed into SDM for AAPI SGM. Some participants shared the stigma of SGM identities and mental health in their AAPI families. Their AAPI and SGM identities were intertwined in affecting mental health. Some providers inappropriately controlled the visibility of the patient's identities, ignoring or overemphasizing them. Participants varied on whether they preferred a provider of the same race, and how prominently their AAPI and/or SGM identities affected SDM.ConclusionsProviders should understand identity-specific challenges for AAPI SGM to engage in SDM. Providers should self-educate about AAPI and SGM history and intracommunity heterogeneity before the encounter, create a safe environment conducive to patient disclosure of SGM identity, and ask questions about patient priorities for the visit, pronouns, and mental health.

Abstract

We studied the effects on the terahertz transmission of gammadion metamatials by adjusting the size and periodicity of the metamaterial, while keeping the periodicity and size fixed, respectively. The terahertz transmission responses of these metamaterials were analyzed using terahertz time domain spectroscopy as well as finite difference time domain electromagnetic simulations. We have found that increasing size or periodicity results in a red shift of the resonant frequency, and that increasing size or decreasing periodicity results in the formation of a second resonant frequency. We associate these effects with the changing lengths of the microstrip lines that make up the metamaterial, as well as the changing strength of nearest-neighbor coupling between gammadions., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Light-matter interactions are key in providing fundamental information about materials. Even in the linear-response regime, the spectroscopic response of a material encodes in it many properties of the ground state as well as of its excitations. This knowledge has been critical in our understanding of novel quantum materials, and the further improvement and extensions of linear spectroscopy will continue to be key in the exploration of novel states of matter. We report the development of broadband circular polarization spectroscopy in the terahertz range of the electromagnetic spectrum. We take advantage of a recent design of a broadband quarter wave plate, based on the Fresnel rhomb concept, and use it in conjunction with a polarization modulation technique to provide direct information of the response of a material to circularly polarized THz radiation; a new capability shown here for the first time. As an example of this technique we study the cyclotron resonance of a 2D electron gas from a AlGaAs-GaAs quantum well. Abstract

Brain extraction (skull stripping) is a challenging problem in neuroimaging. It is due to the variability in conditions from data acquisition or abnormalities in images, making brain morphology and intensity characteristics changeable and complicated. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for skull stripping in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, namely ASMCNN, by combining the Active Shape Model (ASM) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for taking full of their advantages to achieve remarkable results. Instead of working with 3D structures, we process 2D image sequences in the sagittal plane. First, we divide images into different groups such that, in each group, shapes and structures of brain boundaries have similar appearances. Second, a modified version of ASM is used to detect brain boundaries by utilizing prior knowledge of each group. Finally, CNN and post-processing methods, including Conditional Random Field (CRF), Gaussian processes, and several special rules are applied to refine the segmentation contours. Abstract

Time domain terahertz spectroscopy typically uses mechanical delay stages that inherently suffer from non-uniform sampling positions. We review, simulate, and experimentally test the ability of corrective cubic spline and Shannon re-gridding algorithms to mitigate the inherent sampling position noise. We present simulations and experimental results that show re-gridding algorithms can increase the signal to noise ratio within the frequency range of 100 GHz to 2 THz. We also predict that re-gridding corrections will become increasingly important to both spectroscopy and imaging as THz technology continues to improve and higher frequencies become experimentally accessible., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Large-scale multi-ethnic cohorts offer unprecedented opportunities to elucidate the genetic factors influencing complex traits related to health and disease among minority populations. At the same time, the genetic diversity in these cohorts presents new challenges for analysis and interpretation. We consider the utility of race and/or ethnicity categories in genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of multi-ethnic cohorts. We demonstrate that race/ethnicity information enhances the ability to understand population-specific genetic architecture. To address the practical issue that self-identified racial/ethnic information may be incomplete, we propose a machine learning algorithm that produces a surrogate variable, termed HARE. We use height as a model trait to demonstrate the utility of HARE and ethnicity-specific GWASs.

Abstract

BackgroundThe Department of Veterans Affairs Million Veteran Program (MVP) is the largest ongoing cohort program of its kind, with 654,903 enrollees as of June 2018. The objectives of this study were to examine gender differences in the MVP cohort with respect to response and enrollment rates; demographic, health, and health care characteristics; and prevalence of self-reported health conditions.MethodsThe MVP Baseline Survey was completed by 415,694 veterans (8% women), providing self-report measures of demographic characteristics, health status, and medical history.ResultsRelative to men, women demonstrated a higher positive responder rate (23.0% vs. 16.0%), slightly higher enrollment rate (13.5% vs. 12.9%), and, among enrollees, a lower survey completion rate (59.7% vs. 63.8%). Women were younger, more racially diverse, had higher educational attainment, and were less likely to be married or cohabitating with a partner than men. Women were more likely to report good to excellent health status but poorer physical fitness, and less likely to report lifetime smoking and drinking than men. Compared with men, women veterans showed an increased prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions, thyroid problems, gastrointestinal conditions, migraine headaches, and mental health disorders, as well as a decreased prevalence of gout, cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol, diabetes, and hearing problems.ConclusionsThese results revealed some substantial gender differences in the research participation rates, demographic profile, health characteristics, and prevalence of health conditions for veterans in the MVP cohort. Findings highlight the need for tailoring recruitment efforts to ensure representation of the increasing women veteran population receiving care through the Veterans Health Administration.

135. Fundamental Limits of Low-Density Spreading NOMA with Fading

Abstract

Spectral efficiency of low-density spreading non-orthogonal multiple access channels in the presence of fading is derived for linear detection with independent decoding as well as optimum decoding. The large system limit, where both the number of users and number of signal dimensions grow with fixed ratio, called load, is considered. In the case of optimum decoding, it is found that low-density spreading underperforms dense spreading for all loads. Conversely, linear detection is characterized by different behaviors in the underloaded vs. overloaded regimes. In particular, it is shown that spectral efficiency changes smoothly as load increases. However, in the overloaded regime, the spectral efficiency of low- density spreading is higher than that of dense spreading.

Abstract

In our antioxidant screening of some Vietnamese plant extracts, the CHCl3-soluble fraction from Calotropis gigantea (L.) W.T.Aiton flowers showed moderate DPPH free radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 55.8 μg/mL. Thus, a further phytochemical study was carried out to obtain five alkaloids, including a new β-carboline-type alkaloid, caloside H (1). These known compounds were identified as 5-hydroxy-(2-methoxymethyl)pyridine (2), nicotinic acid (3), p-(acetylamino)phenol (4), and thymine (5). These structures were determined based on the NMR spectroscopic analysis. In antioxidant assay, caloside H at concentration of 100 μM showed DPPH radical scavenging capacity with a percentage of inhibition of 40.2%. Abstract

Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the general population but has not been well studied in US veterans. We obtained self-reported alcohol consumption from Million Veteran Program participants. Using electronic health records, CAD events were defined as 1 inpatient or 2 outpatient diagnosis codes for CAD, or 1 code for a coronary procedure. We excluded participants with prevalent CAD (n = 69,995) or incomplete alcohol information (n = 8,449). We used a Cox proportional hazards model to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for CAD, adjusting for age, gender, body mass index, race, smoking, education, and exercise. Among 156,728 participants, the mean age was 65.3 years (standard deviation = 12.1) and 91% were men. There were 6,153 CAD events during a mean follow-up of 2.9 years. Adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for CAD were 1.00 (reference), 1.02 (0.92 to 1.13), 0.83 (0.74 to 0.93), 0.77 (0.67 to 0.87), 0.71 (0.62 to 0.81), 0.62 (0.51 to 0.76), 0.58 (0.46 to 0.74), and 0.95 (0.85 to 1.06) for categories of never drinker; former drinker; current drinkers of ≤0.5 drink/day, >0.5 to 1 drink/day, >1 to 2 drinks/day, >2 to 3 drinks/day, and >3 to 4 drinks/day; and heavy drinkers (>4 drinks/day) or alcohol use disorder, respectively. For a fixed amount of ethanol, intake at ≥3 days/week was associated with lower CAD risk compared with ≤1 day/week. Beverage preference (beer, wine, or liquor) did not influence the alcohol-CAD relation. Our data show a lower risk of CAD with light-to-moderate alcohol consumption among US veterans, and drinking frequency may provide a further reduction in risk.

Abstract

While adherence to healthful dietary patterns has been associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the general population, limited data are available among US veterans. We tested the hypothesis that adherence to Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) food pattern is associated with a lower risk of developing CAD among veterans. We analyzed data on 153 802 participants of the Million Veteran Program enrolled between 2011 and 2016. Information on dietary habits was obtained using a food frequency questionnaire at enrollment. We used electronic health records to assess the development of CAD during follow-up. Of the 153 802 veterans who provided information on diet and were free of CAD at baseline, the mean age was 64.0 (SD=11.8) years and 90.4% were men. During a mean follow-up of 2.8 years, 5451 CAD cases occurred. The crude incidence rate of CAD was 14.0, 13.1, 12.6, 12.3, and 11.1 cases per 1000 person-years across consecutive quintiles of Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension score. Hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for CAD were 1.0 (ref), 0.91 (0.84-0.99), 0.87 (0.80-0.95), 0.86 (0.79-0.94), and 0.80 (0.73-0.87) from the lowest to highest quintile of Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension score controlling for age, sex, body mass index, race, smoking, exercise, alcohol intake, and statin use (P linear trend,

Abstract

Background:   Corneal afflictions may result in blurred vision, but in severe cases it can cause complete vision loss. In many cases, sight can be restored through a corneal transplant using donor tissues. The problem with transplantation by using donor tissues is the lack of cornea tissues available and a risk of rejection. NanoCurv Impressions has developed a one-piece state of the art artificial corneal device with nanopattern technology. Research is in progress to validate the efficacy of the nanostructures which should improve device integration and prevent infections.
